Hello Tom! You can also use "Present in Window" feature in keynote, and then you wouldn't need two different sources/computers to achieve kind of the same effect. Great video btw!

This set up reminds me of all the live presentations I ran, with two computers, but usually for redundancy! Ah the days! With Keynote and power point this can done with one computer, use "Play slide show in Window" in Keynote, In Power Point there is an option for SHOW TYPE: Browsed By an individual (window) - Both of these don't go into full screen but retain all the animations and controls. In Ecamm I use the the zoom in window feature for share screen, it's not 1 to 1 perfect in filling the frame but 98% there.
Great tip! I’ve still not personally had great luck running a presentation of the same computer that I’m streaming, so I still prefer this for peace of mind (even if it is a bit redundant).
Is this working any better now (2023)? Considering an EL subscription but would def need to be able to run a PowerPoint presentation from the same laptop and using EL virtual camera in Zoom.

The magic of Ecamm!
One thing I found really helpful with sharing screens is to "Share Slideshow in Window" and then share that window in Zoom. That helped avoid the screen going black.

Great video Tom. I've been using an iPad Mini running PowerPoint in my eCamm sessions. Works quite well. The other thing I've been doing is running Microsoft Teams on the iPad so my remote presenters can control the pace of their own slide changes. I just don't have the spare desk space for a second laptop with the Rodecaster, Elgato Streamdeck and ATEM mini.
That's a great idea! And you're right, all the equipment definitely takes up desk real estate.
I was doing something similar when I was teaching on Zoom but the video quality when showing my presentation wasn’t as clear as when using the screen share option. But this worked nicely for my YT livestreams!
Zoom is always tricky. I was glad that they improved the quality of the native screen share function, but it still didn't make it easy for presentations and such.

There are several different ways to do it, but I realyl like this since I'm a control freak and it gives the greatest amount of control over everything.
Nice! I'll echo Jorge Castro and Rafael Ludwig (and others???) about present in window for Keynote as good one computer, full-screen presentation option. One downside to this is that you lose presenter notes, and next slide windows. I like the idea of two computers, with primary display set to other capture card, so still have presenter notes and next screen. Oh - bonus points for the tip on a "zoom in/punch in" scene for same camera! I''ll make a "note" of that for my next Ecamm session...
yup I've bought a camlink and I have upgraded to a ATEM as well. I have to find my camlink now tho. lol
Tom, excellent video, as always, and very timely! In your video, is the MBP and cam link plugged in to the Mac Mini?
Yes! The Macbook is running into the CamLink and then into the Mini. The Camera(s) are connected to the ATEM, which is connected to the Mini.
I have a setup like this, but I’m also planning to test out a similar setup with an iPad to run PPT/keynote. I think presenter view might not work but it would allow me to have a similar configuration when I’m traveling (laptop, atem, camlink, and iPad), then use my desktop (iMac) at home with the laptop. Nice work!
An iPad is a great idea! And probably more accessible for a lot of people too.

5:43 It's such a cool idea! Never thought could do that. Since you've mentioned "cycle through automatically", is there a way to do auto-switch loop for scenes? Like I'd like to switch between Scene A & B every 30 seconds. I didn't find this function, if there is a way it would be awesome.
Yes! I can make a video on it eventually, but here are the basics:
1. Create a folder in Ecamm and add whichever scenes you want to use to it.
2. Add a countdown timer to each scene for however long you want it to be "live". Set the timer to automatically move to the next scene when finished.
3. Make the timer transparent by clicking the edit icon and adjusting the opacity near where you can select the color.
4: Since all of your scenes are in a folder, they'll automatically loop. The last one will go right back to the first one in the folder when its timer runs out.
Bonus 1: You can duplicate scenes within the folder and apply different timer length to them. So if you have Scene 1 and Scene 2, you can duplicate them and change the timing so it doesn't seem so robotic. One instance of Scene 1 could last 20 seconds and the next one could last a minute.
Bonus 2: If you have multiple capture cards (like CamLinks or ATEMs, you can connect them separately and then have a scene for each capture card. This will allow you to use the scenes to switch cameras.

This is a great tip. While you can run keynote through one computer, I would prefer this method. I ran out of ports on my computer though...
Ports are definitely an issue. And while it's totally possible to run presentations from one computer, I've found this to be more fluid and reliable, which is what's most important to me while presenting.
Love your videos! When you have everything running to ecam are you recording on every camera angle that switches during your videos? Or are you switching these angles AS you are shooting the videos? Seems like it would take up a ton of memory?
When I'm recording my videos I still use memory cards and Final Cut to sync up everything most of the time, but my wife's setup is based entirely around Ecamm and she uses it for all of her recording with no issues (using the same base model M1 Mac Mini).
All that being said, I have done a lot of recording/switching in Ecamm and it hasn't caused any problems. 👍

They're both great, honestly. A lot of it comes down to the computer's power. Some computers just don't do well when running a presentation and stream simultaneously.

Great vid. I recall skimming this vid a few months ago with one eye opened and didn't get to the part which said you could use Ecamm to "simulate" a 2 camera shoot with the zoom/scene.
I bought the atem p thinking that was the only way to do the multi cam thing but barely opened the box since xmas.
So I guess I'll now buy the ecamm since someone also mentioned yesterday a simultated 2nd cam thing but didn't mention doing a zoom to accomplish it, or maybe my other eye was half open during that video as well:)
so yes I'll take notes and watch it again as I don't have a second usable Mac (I have this m1 and a mini from when Fred was still married to Wilma *reference to the caveman cartoon the Flinstones*. Maybe I'll use the PC with powerpoint and the unlabelled hdmi/usb adapter (blue avs)I bought.

But really, Ecamm is absolutely awesome. They've done a couple of updates since I made this video that have brought even more options and made things even easier. It takes a bit of time to figure everything out, but it's so worth it!

Yes! I have a hub from Amazon (the brand is Hagibis) and it works really well. It's also got room for an internal SSD, so it adds some storage space too.
This is great stuff Tom, thanks! I use Zoom to teach almost everyday at a Cancer Center and the Share Screen function in Zoom is just brutal (thank God Apple finally made it to where you can use Keynote in presentation mode with Zoom). Not sure if you have tried this or not but when it comes to advancing slides, I've started to use the remote function in Keynote for iOS. If I don't need notes I just use the iPhone as it takes up less real estate. Although I'm a stickler for plugging everything in and not counting on wireless connections during a livestream, it hasn't let me down yet. Also, my MacBook isn't too far away if I had to hit a button in a pinch. Anywho, just thought I'd throw that out there. Thanks again for all the great info!!
Sounds like you're doing some great work Dustin! I tried the iOS remote years ago and it was really unreliable, but it might be time to give it another try. I normally use a regular clicker/laser thingy when presenting in person, and that works really well. I suppose I could also use that for online presentations too 🤔
@@tombuck I agree, Tom, the iOS remote used to the be the WORST. If my WiFi signal goes weak it will disconnect but all it takes is one tap and it reconnects real quick. The other benefit for me is using the remote on iPad so I can quickly laser point or write on the slide with either my finger or Apple Pencil. The Keynote remote in Apple Watch is pretty reliable too. I talk with my hands a lot so when I did live presentations in front of humans (and not a camera) I used the watch so I didn’t have to hold something the entire presentation. (I’m geeking out on this way to much, aren’t I? 😂)

Absolutely! In fact, I'd recommend that since the CamLink can g out to 4K resolution and doesn't require and extra power source. 👍

Thank you! I usually hand draw all of my lettering using Procreate on the iPad. I recently made a video about turning your handwriting into a font, and that's definitely helped to speed up the process!
Tom, big thanks for the video! Why are you don’t connect Macbook Pro via HDMI with Atem mini? If you couldn’t see in Ecamm Live Atem’s video inputs separately? (and so you couldn’t combine final scene from them). Think, it will be very useful answer for many of us, who intend make economic and optimized video gear :)
Since the ATEM only shows up as one source in Ecamm, I like to have the cameras and the MacBook connected separately so that I can show both at the same time 👍
Another great video. Quick question since I’m still a rookie with this. I have an AVermedia converter and recently purchased the ATEM mini pro ISO. Do I connect my MacBook into the AVermedia and then into the computer running ECAMM? Thanks in advance.
That should work, yes. And then cameras can go into the ATEM. Since you have the ISO you have more options in terms of how you handle outputs and super sources, but it gets a little tricky. I like this for the simplicity/reliability.
Great video. You're very entertaining... I bought the camlink 4K and connected it to my laptop... opened Ecamm and not seeing in as a camera source as you see it. Any suggestions. I have a big prezzie next week and thought this might be a great solution! Thanks again for your video... you make things very achievable. Cheers.
How are you connecting the CamLink? If it's running through a hub or adapter, it might not have enough power to run it. If you're connecting it directly to your computer, then it _should_ show up as a source.
You could check and see if the CamLink shows up in other apps like Zoom or PhotoBooth. If so, then the problem is with Ecamm (if it's not showing up anywhere, then it's the CamLink).
Also- after making this video I also learned about ndi.tv which could be a solution that would let you run the presentation on a single computer.

*What can you do or what have you done to fix the "blurriness" of Ecamm Virtual Cam when using it on a platform such as Zoom?* I am always receiving complaints from both clients that I produce events for or when I am teaching my students.... * I do have a Camlink, a separate older Mac, a M1 Mac Mini, and a M1 Macbook Pro, and Ecamm.... I use ethernet, and I have my Zoom account upgraded to HD resolution 720p....* I would greatly appreciate your insight. Thanks so much!

@@tombuck yes - Im running a single PC streaming setup and I have 4 monitors (I'm a geek) - PowerPoint Presentation Monitor for me, PowerPoint Display for the audience Scene, a TV for Zoom Interviews or my cool fluid dynamics background and a AV screen for obs,voiccemeeter,itunes, etc. I think a new setup will use my macbook for presenting and connect to a Video Capture card and I get 2 monitor back so I have more real estate for obs and chat and stuff!! brill

I use a combination of Photoshop and Procreate (on the iPad).
Brilliant. I like to do presentations for Toastmasters on Zoom. Comfortable with share the screen and do the key note Wanting to do better in Zoom at club meetings

@@tombuck Would be interested in having you present at our small meeting. Your discussion of auditory pauses was brilliant. On of my clients did an audio book for hockey called 90% mental. He interviewed NHL players and coaches. I admired how he went back and cut all the filler words
Ecamm is really powerful but why not do the same thing with the ATEM Mini and plugging the second computer into that as one of the HDMI sources? You can do PiP, Closeups, and much more with the Macros, Upstream Key, and if desired use the StreamDeck + Companion for shortcuts to switch between those scenes.
Personally love the options we have with the encoders on the computer and programs like Ecamm or OBS but in this case I don't understand why the second Capture card would be beneficial.
P.S.… ofcourse the background + PiP + screen schare would only be possible with the ATEM Mini Extreme (and supersource).
It depends on which ATEM you have, and to be honest, while I absolutely _love_ the ATEM, the process of designing "scenes" is really clunky. There are definitely other ways to achieve this goal, but my purpose here was to show a streamlined process that doesn't involve a lot of "fussing" to make it work. If you're a pro with the ATEM, then it's probably not an issue, but Ecamm is so much easier to use.
@@tombuck I agree that the process on the ATEM is much more clunky. I would love if they’d build a scene interface for the ATEM. 😅 and not just the macros which are a pain to record.

It seems like from the video you plugged the USB end of the CAMlink connection into the MBP and the HDMI end into the system running Ecamm. Is that correct? Your system was able to use HDMI as an input receiving the MBP presentation? Or was that a function of Ecamm?
Yes, the presenting computer’s HDMI output was connected to the camlink, which when to Ecamm via USB on the streaming computer.
You can do this using NDI over LAN completely free, no cables, direct in ECAMM as a source, no capture card.
Yes, NDI is absolutely fantastic!
@@tombuck I'm waiting for the possibility to link many "sources" over the internet in the same way that use the interview mode in ECAMM. A robust connection (NDI) o bring the screen, audio, video, everything to a point of connection. The live will be very very interesting. Today the interview mode of any solution is limited.

hi tom! thanx for tackling the problem. but, frankly, I didn't quite get your point... why do I need two pcs and the switch-board? you could as well open your presentation-program (= pp) and your screen-capturing-program running simultaneously on one pc where you also have the cam-data via link, showing everything on one screen. in ecamm or obs (or generally mixing program = mp) you now define scenes/layers and switch between those within your mp (even with transition-filters if wished). one scene just captures the main-screen of your pp (not the controls), the next you, full-screen, the next you, zoomed in, and now you switch between the scenes mixing whatever you wish, best using keyboard-shortcuts or a noiseless touchpad. so you see everything on your big screen, including all controls, but the viewers see only the main-screen of your mp. right? or is there some error in my thoughts? thanx!
You can definitely do this and ultimately your audience will likely get the same result. But for me personally, I _absolutely_ cannot stand to do it that way. I find ito takes twice as long to get things set up and working well, and I tend to have a lot of errors and mishaps. Even though this takes more equipment, the software side of things is much much smoother, simpler, and more reliable (at least in my experience).
When I'm presenting something complex as a 1 person team, I just don't have the time to deal with software issues. I need things to work as easily and reliably as possible, and this is just what has proven to work best for me. 🤷🏻♂️
Tom, I have a question regarding EcammLive. During a stream, when my followers make a comment, there’s a sound that sounds like a pop and each time there’s a comment, the sound is heard. My question is, how do you mute that sound or simply turn it off?
Hey Rudy! This sound is definitely annoying and I don't know why they enable it by default. You can turn it off by going into Ecamm Preferences > General and uncheck the box for "Play App Sounds".

Hey Tom, don't know if you read this a year later but asking the group two things - #1) You plug an HDMI cable from your "PPT Mac) to the CamLink which goes into your main mac so it looks like a source correct? #2) Could this work with zoom using the computer as a source for guests?
Yep! The CamLink will always show up as a source, and it honestly doesn't care what's connected to it as long as it's HDMI.
So, I should be able to do the same thing with the Elgato HD60 S+ and a MBP, right? No ATEM, just directly into ECAMM on my M1.
Yes! That should work and then you can add your usual capture card for the face camera.

Anyway, I can definitely try and out together a basic podcast setup video! The simplest answer is to use dynamic mics and speak as closely to them as possible without sounding weird. That definitely helps with sound bleed. Along with putting as much space between yourselves as possible without it being awkward.
Q: Is the Camlink plugged in to a USB port on your Mac Mini? Is that how it's differentiated as a separate video source in Ecamm Live?

1. The computer that runs your presentation is connected to a cam link, is the cam link connected to one port of your black magic or connected to your computer? I believe you did the latter in your video but why can’t you just connect to Black Magic?
2. You talk about using ecamm as a second display of your MacBook Pro. How do I do that? I set up on my computer or I can configure On ecamm

*1* . The CamLink is its own capture card, so it connects to the computer separately.
*2* . When the MacBook is connected via the CamLink, it views the CamLink as a separate display (and then I run that into Ecamm). That's what lets you either mirror the images or use it like I show here.

Anyone know the best way to have multiple iPhones as camera inputs to Ecamm? Camo only allows one at a time. I’m trying to use one M1 Max, and two iPhones as cameras, and having an iPad as a mirrored display so the host could could simultaneously control aspects of the stream while I’m behind the laptop controlling other things. Ideally one system like this. Ideas? Recommendations? I need it to be one system for maximum mobility and ease of setup, not to mention the WOW factor when setting up at random parties or events on the fly.
Wait, I'm confused. To connect your camera to your atem mini, do you need a capture card or can you do it just with teh cameras hdmi out into the atem mini

Essentially, yes. Ecamm will pick up each capture card separately, and all of the sources from the ATEM will show up as one input. The higher end ATEM models like the Extreme ISO have the ability to do their own multicam outputs, but it can be a little clunky sometimes.
This is a great video. However, I just tried it with my MBPRO (early 2020) and my M1MM and the source comes on for a few seconds and then goes black. Did you run into something similar when you were first doing this?
I haven't had any issues like that, it's all been plug and play on my end 🤷🏻♂️
@@tombuck Yeah... I had to find the right combo of HDMI cable and capture card to get it to work. This is what happens when you use cheap capture cards :)
So I have everything working and configured using keynote, Camlink, and Ecamm. I have me on the screen as well - just like your video. Great! As an aviation educator, the maps that pilots use are very detailed. So I use zoom’s screenshare and select Advanced then I select “Content from Second Camera” and cycle through until the Ecamm virtual camera appears. The problem I’m having is the audio is not syncing with the video of my headshot/PiP. Doesn’t matter if I select the mic as a direct source in Zoom or include the mic in my Loopback virtual audio device. Of course, when I need the hires for a particular slide, I can just play the game and get 1080p, but I’d have to switch it mid-stream. Any ideas? I tried creating a pass-thru device in loopback, sending the Audio Monitor to it, then delaying it in Ecamm but the results were mixed according to my tester on the other end of the zoom call. Maybe I should join your group and get some real testing going?
This is super interesting! I've only learned a bit about sectional charts due to my Part 107 license, and you're right, there's a TON of tiny details that can easily get muddied up.
I've heard that you can contact Zoom's customer support and sweet talk them into enabling 1080 for your account, but I haven't tried it myself yet.

G'day Tom! How is the audio quality when a video in a keynote presentation is played? I get real bad sync and distortion problems with videos that have audio in Keynote when screen shared in a ZOOM call. So I'm wondering if you did your Ecamm setup and made it a virtual cam for a Zoom call, do you reckon this would improve that issue? Would be keen to know if you've tried this 😄
Zoom will always butcher audio a bit unfortunately, but I've had great luck with this method overall. I add 5 frames of audio delay in Ecamm to keep everything synced and then it works really well. I even used to use it to do critiques of video projects over Zoom when I was teaching remotely.

This solution works perfectly. However, the capture card does not capture any audio coming from the presentation. Any way to capture the audio from a keynote presentation in Ecamm Live?
Here's what I would recommend:
1. Play the Keynote presentation on the same computer that you're using with Ecamm, but select "Play Slideshow in Window" from the menu. This will allow yo auto play the presentation without it taking up the whole screen.
2. G oto NDI.tv and install NDI. This video from my buddy Doc Rock explains the finer points: ua-cam.com/video/-tRzNe-m5pM/v-deo.html
3. Open NDI and select Keynote as your output source.
4. In Ecamm add the Keynote NDI source as a new video source.
5. Use Loopback to route your audio. You'll be able to create a virtual audio device for Keynote, which you can then add as an audio source in Ecamm. NDI does have a free audio option similar to Loopback now, but I haven't used it myself.
6. Pat yourself on the back and enjoy a snack for a job well done.

What if, let’s say: Run the presentation on an iPad screen streaming with airplay on a Chrome Cast dongle connected to a cheap capture card?
I don't see any reason that wouldn't work, but it'll take some experimenting. And yes, you could probably do something similar in OBS 👍
Why is it when I create a new scene, it changes one of the scenes I already have set up and it overwrites it? That’s the problem I’m having.
Be sure that your existing scenes are "locked" so that way they don't get affected by anything else. I constantly forget to do this and accidentally end up messing with the wrong scene.
@@tombuck Okay Tom, now I have another interesting question. How can I share a video that is playing from one of my UA-cam channels to my public? When I select Source the Share Screen it shows my wallpaper instead. I know that on Streamyard I am able to share my screen, but I'm having issues on EcammLive with this. LOL.....Help!
Why not just connect notebook to Atem Mini (if notebook have HDMI output), then it is like any camera input.
Because then you won’t be able to build scenes the same way that you would with Ecamm (or at least not as easily).

With Keynote there's an option to "Play in Window" which will then put your slideshow in its own window. I then use NDI to make that window a source for Ecamm.
I'm sure that PowerPoint must have a similar "Play in Window" option. 👍
or you could just capture a window output of a powerpoint? you could use obs & just have a window capture.
The problem is when you go full screen- weird things happen.
@@tombuck Hmm, couldn't you just use a windowed capture of the powerpoint, using reading view? It keeps all the animations.

@@tombuck I've just tested capturing a powerpoint, capturing through obs. It works! You may have to do a little bit of cropping, but it works.
Why use a Camlink ? Just use a second monitor for you presentation (with you Macbook for control and the notes) and a HDMI Splitter going to you Atem ! Et voila !
Yes, that could definitely work! The separate CamLink is really for making it easier to create dynamic scenes using Ecamm Live.
The Problem is to bring that in Zoom. You can do it only with screen share about zoom
I use Ecamm's Virtual Cam as my Zoom video source and then all of this still applies 👍

Resolution. My Internet have 900-1000 mbit (1Gbit) and upload 50 mbit.

With newer computers like the M1 Max, you totally can. When playing Keynote, you can select "Play In Window" and then use NDI.tv to bring that in as an Ecamm source and arrange it/size it however you'd like 👍
