ok so Gojira started as a technical death metal ..what you picked is one of their most demanding and heavier songs , around 2009 ,what they do now , is waaaayy more progressive and melodic , they got older so they soften a bit their music , if you listen songs like , stranded , the chant , silvera , born in winter , pray live extended version , shooting star , another world , low land , very different and by the way thi ssong is studied by drummers because of the complexity of the polyrythm ..it's not just playing fast

I'll check it out. Getting older and mellow pretty much happens to us all. It's not a bad thing either.

Theyre very versatile actually, you could listen to their music not knowing its them and never realize its the same guys that made Art of dying (for non Gojira listeners ofc, fans would pick up some of their signature sounds). One of the best metal bands out there, Joe's screams are amazing but he has a lot clean vocals too, just not in this song. Same goes with melodic riffs like the outro. Although this one is considered a masterpiece by most of the community, possibly not the best song to start with Gojira if someone is not really into very heavy music

I like plenty of heavy music but this kind of thing isn't very musical to me. It's raging intensity for the sake of raging intensity. If that's what defines a masterpiece, we need to rethink the definition of the word. With a lot of bands like this, it seems like the drums need to be played as fast as possible. The guitars growl and yowl as filler noise and the screaming is just screaming. I never did make any sense of what he was trying to say. I don't mean to be so negative but all these metal bands, death, black or otherwise, don't hold much interest for me. I need a little music in my music. If I were going to listen to something real heavy from this day and age it would be Opeth or someone like that. Though I don't like his growling vocals either.

@@JohnCregoWorldMusic Gojira has a lot of music in their music, exceptional amount Id say. Judging such a unique, artistic and versatile band by one song is a bit shallow take to be honest. And I strongly disagree with the statement that screams are just for the sake of screaming or they have fast intense sections just to be fast and intense. Theyre one of the best in terms of expressing their feeling and emotions throughout music. Some emotions can only be expressed by screaming and heaviness, but you didnt really get a message of the song. Its not about dying, its about leaving the material world behind to understand a deeper meaning of existence. Ultimately if afterlife exists, we wont transfer anything from this world there except for the soul, so the main focus in our life should be to become the best version of ourselves and simply just good human beings. The first slow and heavy part is the character feeling frustrated and trapped by material things and shallow problems of everyday world, he feels like he is losing the perception of whats actually real etc. The second, fast part is character realizing how pointless the material world is and releasing himself from that imprisonment from before. The outro is just character finally being at peace with himself as he now knows the meaning of life and death and learned about the art of dying. When it comes to musicianship, theyre fantastic musicians, but as you mentioned drums, then Mario Duplantier is for most of the drummers (and other musicians) considered top3 or even the best drummer on earth right now. A true master at his craft. And that syncopated pattern in the intro riff is universally considered one of the most impressive drum parts in metal music and Im saying this as a drummer myself. Tastes differ, sure, but their music and lyrics truly is a different experience to anything else in music, youre gonna miss a lot by just labelling them as fast screamy guys without any value

Well defended. The criticism was as uninformed as I’ve seen.

This is the extreme end of Gojira, hence why I never suggest this as a first.
"Born in Winter, Low Lands, Shooting Star" all are very slow and fine tuned songs that are much much easier.
The Art of Dying is a display of pure technical ability, timing and more. The intro pattern is actually almost impossible to play correctly on a kit.
Also, all proceeds from the song "Amazonia" go to supporting the rainforest and its native tribes. They also donated to the anti-whaling ship named after the band. They seek to do only good, they are pure in heart, and talent. Definitely can see how this as a first song is a lot to take in!

It's not really a lot to take in. I have no problem listening to complicated music. I don't think there was much to it. I suppose if someone is seventeen, this sounds like the most awesome music ever made. I have about sixty years of listening to music so I've heard a wide variety of styles. I actually like complicated music where it's a challenge to get a grip on what's going on rhythmically. As an example, I did a Tool song and didn't particularly like it and got a bunch of grief about I just didn't get how complicated it was and the fact that the drum part at the beginning was based on the Fibonacci scale and I didn't pick up on that fact so that made me some kind of musical half-wit. As if any of the hard core Tool fans immediately picked up on that connection. I seriously doubt that. They find that out later and are quick to through it up in someones face as if they've known it all along. Well, I'm going on a bit long. I'm not directing this at you. You seem very reasonable in your comment. I just feel like people think I'm overwhelmed by this stuff and it's too much for my pea brain to take in when in fact I'm underwhelmed by it and think it's just a bunch of racket. Good lord I'm showing my age. "That's not music ya' young scalawags!!!" Said in my best old man voice.

The fibonacci thing from Tool is stupid and knee-jerk anyway, Tool themselves don't take any pride in it whatsoever.
The singing voice of the singer gets mellower as he ages, and some songs he actually sings but they are known for having very technical drums while fairly simple yet heavy riffs, and unusual song structures.
For me, it was their album from 2016 that gave me the unlock and I could tolerate or even appreciate the singer's voice much more.
I think the song Silvera is simple yet efficient, while also heavy and probably one of the best merge between their old very heavy/death metal-ish style and their new more progressive and mellow style.
Whoever recommended you this as a first song from Gojira didn't think a lot about it and thought "Hey heavy as hell intro and intricate drum pattern, that's badass!" without thinking further I think.
For the sake of being fair though, try to focus on the drumming pattern of the introduction, it's head scratchingly bizarre@@JohnCregoWorldMusic
