I’m so happy it works because I dig the look as well. I saw one at a very brave camera sale for $100. I really want a VHS. That model from back to the future specifically ;)
Let’s start the trend! They’re cheap to get these days and lots of young video makers are ripping the vhs look on HD footage ;). I want to use this camera more.
I like how not perfect videos looked back then. I use to film me and my friends skateboarding and I still prefer the look of 90s early 2000's film footage to the clean and clear footage of today for skating boarding. Also I notice too many people film with phones now and very often they can't center the shot well because of how skinny the phone is and placement of camera. With the camcorder it had a strap to fit your hand through and you could either hold the camcorder with both hands securely or with one. Plus the LCD screen you could swivel and helped because you didn't have to use the eye viewer which made for great low to the ground shots where I would follow my friend on a skateboard and film him doing a trick on a ledge or doing a flip trip off some stairs. The zooming in and out buttons were always really close to your thumb too which was awesome to use before and after the trick.
Totally agree with you man. These were made for skate stuff, put a wide angle adapter on it and you're golden. This low fi video plus 16mm high contrast film...the look and edge of that skate/surf culture of an era long gone. PS: Tie Fighter was my IS my all time favourite PC game. ;) Bought it at eB games (back when they had fibre optic signs) the DAY it came out! So good
The way you have shot this video even has a classic early 2000s look. The cutting style, the choice of music, the subject matter. A masterclass right here Mark - supreme creative skills at play. Take note viewers!
Haha thanks Mate! It’s funny it was my very first vlog, haven’t done one since. Shot and cut it in a single day to see how these daily guys do it. I will admit most of the cutting was on the fly; I didn’t have much time to over think it. I ended at 3:30am, watched in the AM and posted it lol. Never again I said to myself. Was fun though, that camera held up nicely! Can’t believe the battery still holds a charge!
@@MarkHoltze Seriously?! Mate, this is stunning. I know you've said you are not into vlogging per say, but you should consider doing one here and there in 2019. This was extremely engaging and well cut. I know how hard that is having an old ass camera lying around here somewhere. I Understand if you don't want to do the videos on this camera though. Cutting up the vision into clips is something I don't miss one bit from SP/LP 60 DV tapes.
Ya capturing was awful...10 min intervals and I shot about 70 mins. I really can’t stand walking around shooting my self. It goes against everything I’ve done the last 20 years as a shooter. Lol. But ya maybe, I really liked the challenge! And I’m always up for a challenge.
my good friend of mine, his mom just gave us a camcorder like this and we’re so stoked, it just adds another layer to film and video production, but thank you for this video, it deserves thousands and thousands of more views.
What I have discovered since your post is that I can hook up the camera to my computer and record directly to my computer and skip the whole tape import part. Not bad for a 20yo camera in this day and age. All I need now is a portable/laptop and I can go and video anything I want and and I am right up there with recording to cards etc. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hi8 just oozes 90s charm and I love it! I've found that I can actually get some really good results if some time is spent setting the focus and exposure manually, and you can tape some aspect ratio guides over the LCD screen to shoot for that. Convert it to 24fps in editing software and it's surprising just how vintagely Filmic you can make it look. Shame there was no high frame rate recording for smooth slow motion, but otherwise this format was to 90s kids what Super-8 was to the 70s.
Mark Holtze I hook my camcorder up to my computer using a video capture device I use the easy cap Capture card and software is called honest tech and it’s good software I use the sp Mode sometimes and I use the ep speak setting I can get one hour and 30 minutes out of it I burned my videos to DVD but I’m having trouble trying to upload them to UA-cam I don’t have Internet at my house I have to go places but I hope one day I can get them on UA-cam dude your videos and I hope to see more videos using the high eight camcorder that will be awesome
My father still has footage from 1999/2000 with a camera quality similar to this and a majority of it is me at the age of 1 and 2, I’m now 21 and feeling old af anyway this is an awesome video
I have a wide collection of both cameras and camcorders. I just picked up a Sony Handycam from 1994 at Value Village and it works pretty good so far. I have about forty different camcorders so far as of now and they are all from different formats from VHS to Hi8 to MiniDV to Memory Card, and different brands such as Sony (as I mentioned), JVC, Panasonic, RCA, Hitachi, Sharp, Canon, etc. Normally if I were to use any of these cameras they would be for travelling and filming things like trips and parties in an old school style. It surely beats those VHS Filter apps that you see nowadays on social media.
Mark Holtze I’m using an old capture card from 2005 (I know it sounds crazy but the results in quality are surprisingly better than what I used before), and I also use an LG LRH-539 DVD HDD Recorder which is similar if not better in capturing video where you can edit and cut out clips within the built in hard drive then dub it to a DVD-R. I capture my VHS tapes from any VCR that has stereo output and not mono (surprisingly, there are VCR’s out there that have mono outputs which are inconvenient when you are capturing tapes with hi-fi stereo sound). As for 8mm/Hi8 tapes, it is simply any Hi8 camcorder with stereo output and an S-Video port (to capture the video in higher quality rather than composite since Hi8 is about 500 lines of resolution whereas Video8 is less and can only be captured by composite. For my DVD Recorder, I use a Hitachi VM-H710A camcorder and for my capture device I use a Sony Handycam CCD-TRV128 because the Hitachi has issues running on my capture device. As for improving glitches and dropouts on both VHS and Hi8/Video8, I am eyeballing eBay and other listing websites for a good Time Base Corrector, preferably the DataVideo TBC-1000, which has both composite and S-Video ports rather than BNC ports which are annoying to use and require buying more cables on eBay and they don’t capture sound properly because there’s no sound input and output at all. As for the VHS Filter apps; coming from an 18 year old who just graduated high school, all the kids use these VHS apps. I frequently see them be used in Instagram and Snapchat, and they are literally the cardboard cutout of every little tidbit of using VHS except looking more digital in spots where they shouldn’t look like that (take the date/time display for example). It makes it even sadder when seeing those React videos on YT where there’s people who are my age if not slightly older who barely can operate a VHS camcorder, even when the buttons are obvious and the AC ports are a matter of observing around the camera for it, which takes no less than a minute. I think I saw one of the teenagers on that React video who tried playing back the tape by not only sliding it sideways, but slapping it on top of the TV which blows my mind, it’s like they never played that game Perfection (where you fit the shapes in the holes before they pop) to get the hang of how things should fit in VCRs and such. But there’s a benefit when having this certain knowledge has people depend on you when capturing their parents home videos rather than pay twenty or thirty dollars for a single VHS transfer at Costco or Staples.
Pictures produced on new HD cameras look so generic and sterile compared to the analogue VHS recorders. Something about the old school technology adds a whole lot of life and character to the picture you wouldn't otherwise find in even the most advanced digital cameras. Video quality is one of the main reasons I prefer watching pre mid 2000s skate videos and wrestling. Theres such a whole different feel to it.
I agree, but I think a bit part of that must be nostalgia. If this is the LOOK you remember at a super impressionable time in your life, when you see it again you kind of fall back into that time of your life and it's usually met with warm feelings. Skate videos, totally...why i had to shoot the skaters on my way into the office, took me back lol. I imagine 8mm film has a similar nostalgic feeling to those who grew up on that as well. What I do love about all is it's not 1:1 real life crisp. There's an element of flaw to it which helps make it feel nostalgic. I totally agree though. You see this stuff and you immediately think 90's
@@MarkHoltze Definitely. Hey, by chance, do you know of an affordable way to transfer the footage to a computer? I see some 100+ dollar options, but I was hoping to find a poor man's solution. Thanks man.
@@joshuakaeble7810 Well the adpater I use ION PC (which is now no longer supported) was $60. The super cheap options honestly suck, they fail all the time or their software is crap. $40-$80 is your best bet I think. Google Search RCA to USB adapters and see if you get a list. CHeck reviews etc to make sure they're not complete trash and go from there. I don't' have a cheap one I can personally recommend though as i've just never really used any.
@@MarkHoltze sounds good, man. Thanks! I'll probably just get a good one. The cool thing is that items like that hold their value well, so you can always unload them online if you get tired of them. I'll probably just keep it though. I'm somewhat of a nostalgia nerd. Thanks for the insight.
I have this exact camera and have been wanting to do something like this for forever. I kind of collect vintage video cameras, and I recently came across an old over-the-shoulder VHS camera that I plan on taking to an 80's party this weekend. Should be fun! Cant wait to see people's faces 😅
VHS and High 8 Analog are coming back full circle! Retro HIP is back in business! :) Much cheaper than 8mm film stock which i've been messing around with, but LOVE the different formats when they're properly motivated.
Amazing! It must change the way you shoot, no? I mean with digital formats you can point, shoot save/delete but with analogue it's not as easy. I remember having to edit from my old Hi-8, that was an interesting affair.
Ya digitizing is more time consuming...going to do a video this weekend on digitizing analog formats, but ya back in the day you needed a capture card and your editing software had to be able to recognize it. You could always rewind and tape over stuff but you def had to babysit the capture process. It's so easy today with plug in drag and drop! That camera made "vlogging" super easy, I'm only now capturing the stuff from my high school days and editing them down. So cool to do that and revisit those old memories.
I love this. haha. I have an 8mm Sony V5 from 1988 that was my first camcorder. I bought it with my lawn mowing/babysitting money when I was 14. I still have it but it doesn't work anymore. I shot VLOGs back then (50 of them!) before there was even such a thing! I've been thinking about posting them up on youtube. haha. Enjoy your videos. Nice work. BTW - I have a few C100s as well.
Wow, you should post em up! I have tons of cool little "vlogs" from all my trips between 1997-2005. Some on MINI DV, we were posting them years ago to our own webpage, but couldn't translate to youtube because of my use of commercial music etc. If only I did a music-less master ;). Thanks for the kind words mate, i'll keep an eye on your channel if you do get around to posting them.
It doesn't do cinematic slow motion very well ;). It's also a bit of a pain to digitize the footage, but outside of those two things, I completely agree! Why DON"T they. Such a great camera.
Ya I brought it all into avid which my default setting was 16:9...took like 3 hours with all the footage and was trying to get it all done in a day so bloody hell. You right though. Haven’t made that mistake again shooting with jt ;)
I love this look, it brings back memories from my early childhood. A time I barely remember. I want to do all sorts of things with this aesthetic. It’s perfect for that early 2000’s feel. Imperfect yet full of character and soul that more modern digital cameras can’t capture. I’ve always wondered what this aesthetic is called, and what goes into making it? Really cool video, it’s chill, fascinating, and good fun, pretty nice stuff man.
Ha, thanks Jack. Was fun, but I don’t know how these daily guys pump these out day by day. I shot this and I’m an editor so am super quick but still took me 6 hours to edit it. Digitizing took up an additional 3 hours lol. Darn tape formats.
Yeah I think we have it easy these days, I can't imagine myself being able to stand editing tape footage professionally. We do have so much more room for creativity with the advent of completely digital formats, though.
When you get high enough you have assistant editors who did that ;). When I did my mini dv stuff for clients I just logged all the footage in 10 mins intervals and went for a very long walk lol. Digital editing changed the game. Lots of stuff you can do with tape than you can with card based, digitizing 1:1 though sucks lol. It’s much better today I won’t deny that. Although with all the transcoding that goes on with lossless 4k ans HD it’s almost the same now I think about it. I’m lucky I land in the edit ready to go, but the nighttime crew works all night to prep that.
Yeah, a good family friend worked at a tv editing studio for quite long and he always told me to never go in as an editor because it sucks being "the new guy" that does the tasks that no one wants to do and it takes forever to work up the ladder XD
Most jobs start you out that way. I managed to avoid the really tedious stuff by kind of going around the main through way ;). There is a lot to learn, you need to be really really fast on the software and be able to be left alone for quite a while. Direction only really comes in once and awhile depending what you are working on. It’s amazing how much you learn though, once you get in a good position it’s the best job. Lots of amazing interaction, creatively satisfying (everything turns to magic in the edit), but ya it’s can be a bit tedious at the beginning.
@@MarkHoltze that's alright, the stretch actually looks good to me. The audio levels seemed to be quite high or peaking above 0 dB (20 secs to 50 secs for example) but I guess that's been something you have fixed now or would probably cringe yourself a bit at now
I remember when i got my Sony Hi8 back in 1997. Still have it, last time i used it was probably in 2007 or so. I went to see if they still sold the video for it. Which they do, but tripled the price. 2 video tapes run about 30.00.. luckly i found some at Goodwill unopen blank tapes for 49 cents a piece, i found 8 of them, so i bought. Not sure if i will get to record anything. But maybe sometime in the future ill video an event.
Ya it's amazing how expensive some of this stuff can be now that it's classic. Same with vintage lenses. Old lenses from 35mm cameras can be found for like $10 at garage sales or some flea markets, but you can find the same lenses for $300 on boutique shops. There is something to be said for finding new ways of using old film/video technology that keeps it out of dumpsters or land fills ;).
My favorite film format will always be super 8mm. Back in the early 90s. I found like 20 rolls of kodachrome for 1.00 a roll at a dollar store, the film was expired by a year or two. I think back then to get some from places like Ritz camera was about 12-15 bucks a roll. Back then i found my grandfathers old super 8mm camera and i filmed friends and family get togethers. I love the surprise of not knowing how its going to come out.. its an expensive Hobby now. But worth it in the long run.
I bought a super 8mm...film and dev costs are expensive though today. Especially to have it digitally transferred, 50 foot roll with dev and transfer is $75 (3 mins). Hard as a hobby but totally worth a c cam in some instances. Used it for a fashion even and looks dope. I absolutely love it as well. Want that new Kodak super 8mm film camera to drop. Modern tech, LCD view screen. Makes it easier for exposure with modern film stock.
Ya it’s loads of fun and you can really be creative with this look, that’s now retro and in demand. The camera is a beast, can’t believe it still works so well all these years later. You should def look into it.
Thanks mate. It was fun. Forgot how annoying it is to digitize tapes. Modern cams drag and drop files, this rewind and play while record. Kind of have to baby sit it so clear the day when it comes time to digitize.
I personally prefer the Hi 8mm look over todays HD and 4K camera's. It's honest and defo has that 80's and 90's look. When viewed on a CRT screen looks really good. Check out Weird Paul, all his stuff is recorded with either a Hi 8 or VHSC camera. He has that retro look going on even down to his haircut.
Give me some tape to tape editing gear and i'll do it! lol. I still have my high school comm tech instructions on how to perform an edit....roll tape on deck one, mARK IN, roll to end of clip, mark out...EDIT START and watch the magic happen.
I like this idea a lot This getting me back to old days Like 2007 and those days everything is natural not over editing shows... I like old days its really have more natural on telling story its feeling rare people well understand only camera's society will understand its not only the quality of the picture not 4k or expensive rhodes mic its all about your story and u have prove it in this video U have remembered me with american made movie when tomy cruze vloging (secret information) thats was a great movie First time saw your channel and i saw this video not thinking immediatly subscribe ❤
Great piece...but what I had hoped was a comparison of your old camera compared to a modern version SONY to SONY with the same features. I just resurrected my DVR-TRV103 to digitize tapes and was wondering what to buy to get into the total digital work flow for fun. Thnks mate.
Thanks Brian, ya I jsut wanted to show how this camera held up today, spending the whole day shooting with it and just how it would hold up. A direct comparison maybe down the line!
this is my personal opinion I think the video quality of the old camcorder looks really good how many honestly it doesn’t look that bad I think it looks a little bit better in the HD video Quality because the HD looks kind of I wouldn’t say blurry but it has all get more Texter if that makes any sense but it’s just my personal opinion man
Fair enough mate. I agree it's definitely got a LOOK to it that's super cool. When the lighting is right it's fantastic. This was a pretty cloudy day but when you shoot out in the sun, she looks really great!
Mark Holtze Thank you for not fun of Some people whenever they talk about the stuff they make fun of them why I got no idea I’m guessing because were using old technology which still is really cool to use old technology
I’m a huge fan of using old tech in modern times when it’s motivated. Heck my channel has been dedicated to using 60 year old lenses on modern camera to obtain professional results.as someone who gets paid to make films I can say with 100% certainly that new isn’t always the best. :)
You know though.. what I've noticed myself is that tapes have that much more consistent motion than any digital codec. That's because H.264 and AVCHD were meant for stills so every piece of HD video you see is more like an animation.. something about an analog tape being mechanized or also having charge couple displays... people should keep in mind it's about business and being new... I like to watch old home videos of a nice digital shoulder VHS panasonic we had with a TV lens.. on a CRT it is beautiful.. the motion is perfect. I still have HDV .. obviously the resolution isn't as nice but the motion is so much easier on the eyes... i think about picking up an older prosumer HDV but.. Now you would need a 64 bit capture card for fire wire... etc. etc.... pretty crazy... remember DVD-R camcorders too? don't get me wrong I love my AVCHD camera.. but like anything you get what you pay for...no free lunch.. so.. and just like when we dealt with 60 minutes a tape at what cost? ( at least VHS was 2 hours and same quality but still ) quality is in some ways superior.
Really interesting, in a number of ways. First off, I love the retro texture of SD video - though, of course, it's a look that would only suit a specific narrative. Secondly, what a cool job and a great office! More than a bit jealous. I found this video due to the fact I've just unearthed my old Sony HandiCam and was looking for ideas for a project, so this was very helpful. Thanks... Pat the pups for me.
Ahh the Handicam...we're a mafia of the sorts I think. They're fantastic cameras! I wish AVID didn't stretch the footage into 16:9, but I was trying to "daily" this to get a sense of what that would be like and betweeen capturing the footage and waiting for it all to transcode, I just couldn't re-ingest it all. It's a great camera if you need to all of the sudden be back in the late 90's for a narrative film. Something about it feels very "found footage" as well so you could play with that concept as well.
@@MarkHoltze 'Found footage': You were reading my mind. I've been watching a lot of Dan Bell's 'Dead Mall' series lately and the whole 90s vibe intrigues me. Hopefully, I will be brave enough to maintain 4:3 despite the 'negative space' around it (or because of it?). Thanks for the feedback.
Starting a new ep on the 8th ;). Think of it this way though, lots of flight safety rules are changed to prevent similar instances. It is a little disconcerting I will admit. :)
Mark Holtze Eh that's true I guess. And I shall look out for it! Might have to steal this concept with my DVX100. Also I noticed you're a fellow Avid Media Composer user. Damn straight!
Hey Daniel! Working on EP 10 ;) RIGHT now ;) Well not as I write this, working on something else as I write this, but TOMORROW business hours I'll be IN on it. I posted a screen shot of SE18 EP 10 slate on my instagram. Go check it out ;) Hopefully I'll get a chance to work on a few more for SE 19, was tied up for 6 months on a pretty intense series. Glad to be back on it though. I'm probably going to do a "day in the edit" for this show, but won't come for a few weeks. I'll see what I can talk about and what I can't. Most likely going to be process. The steps that go into editing a show like this vs being about the actual EPISODE specifically. I can use examples from the older episodes I cut though.
I love these types of old school quality to it, i dunno but it seems more real than HD, life isn't in HD so i guess that's why i have that feeling of surrealism nowadays, it just doesn't seem real...
Remember, this is still a digital format, although recorded on magnetic tape. It would be very interesting to see you doing this as a comparison between Video8, Hi8 and Digital8. Great Video!
That’s right lol. Been way too long since I was into the technical side of things on tape. It would be! I need a better more reliable digitizer though. With some good cables.
V-G-Z Video 8 and Hi8 are analog formats recorded on 8mm Tape. Digtal8 is the digital format recorded on 8mm Tape where true 1s and 0s are being written. Mark used a Hi8 camera.
Video8 had one weird thing that VHS-C didnt have. If you shook the camera while recording it would invite head skip and a little noise. VHS or VHS-C would be able to handle it very well The reason was, Video8 had a small and sometimes thinner tape. VHS/VHS-C ha a wider tape which helped it ride along and say alined with the heads.
Hello Mark, I like this video, I have the same camera and also I have a tons of family videos that I would like to edit, but when I transfer to my pc they don’t looks so wood. How can I remasters these video? If you have any information or tutorial please let me know. Thank you so much.
Hey Andres, how are you doing it now? I did a video on my process here: ua-cam.com/video/oYMszuMyGG4/v-deo.html I would use S-VIDEO cable as your video out vs RCA cables and you should have a better transfer image. You need to tweak your capture settings to ensure the best compression.
I was thinking i should get that Edgar Allen Poe collection from the store you was in, but i thought to myself this video is probably 10 years old and its long ago! Then, i remembered this was in 2017!! Definitely sold the vintage effect!
I actually shot my Canon FD 24mm lens rest there in HD, update is it’s gone. They have a first edition English dictionary for 16k though if you have the green ;)
Where's Blake now? Is he doing okay wherever he is?? And I've still got a similar Sony Handycam. I think a couple years ahead of your version. I do wanna shot on it but gotta pick up some replacement batteries.
Hey man, I got a similar camera for my last birthday. My grandmother gave it to me so I could start with my independent short films (now that I decided to get into cinema). I love how the quality of the image makes it look old, but still nostalgic and quite unique. And now that I got the chance to see how it works (thanks to your video), I get more courage and excitement to use it. So, I will be making a short Documentary mixed with a short story next week with the camera. Wish me luck!!! If everything goes great I would like to share it with you. PD: Is it possible that I could use some of your street/exterior shots from this video in case I get trouble shooting mine? Let me know please!!!
That sounds awesome man! Stoked for you! You can TOTALY use street/exterior stuff from this video if you want. I would recommend trying to avoid that simply to keep things ALL YOU and in YOUR STYLE, but please...feel free to use anything you want. Let me know when it's done and where I can see it!

Amazing video! Can you tell me if there’s a digital camera with sd card or at least USB port that I can buy that has this look, this resolution, this grain? Thanks !
Thanks Skins. There are some third party plugins that you can try out. Just google search VHS look and there should be both free and pay ware versions of it. Of course nothing beats the real thing but regardless you definitely can achieve the look with modern cameras. Good luck!

I still use a minidv camcorder and an old Samsung smx f30. Standard definition is lively and looks cool. I still like hd but this feels and looks professional to me
Thanks, it was actually by accident. I cut this in AVID Media Composer and imported all the footage (took hours to transcode everything as I don't like AMA linking editing) but its as brought in at aspect ratio of the timeline which was 1920x1080 and I should have just kept it standard. I've corrected the issue moving forward (cut most of my stuff at home now on Premiere Pro anyway) so I don't have this transcoding issue.
The wide was actually how aVID imported it. I forgot to switch default import settings from 1920x1080 16:9 to the "native resolution". It essentially just stretched the footage horizontal. The skate stuff is nostalgic for me as well, I had to shoot it just for that effect.
Where do you store your videos? I am going to buy a camcorder so I can record our camp trips... our hiking trips and I tried using my phone but not enough space... so do I use sd cards? Or put on a DVD? You have videos from childhood so how do I save mine? Help!
@@MarkHoltze yeh that front shuv down the set was mad, yeh check out my channel for some 80s/90s nostalgia, in t boys on vhs i use a Panasonic 80s broadcasting vhs cam
I did a video on the process here. It might be easier to show vs tell: ua-cam.com/video/oYMszuMyGG4/v-deo.html&app=desktop Capture using an rca to USB adapter and edit the footage inside exiting software. It’s great.
If you bob-deinterlaced this video, you could have gotten full 60fps motion from old analog video, which is how the video was actually made. All interlaced cameras are 60fps if deinterlaced right
Hey Mark, why is my Sony Hi8, TR-818, stuck on 'stby" when i want to view tapes?? I've pulled the battery, reset, etc., numerous times but the "stby" won't budge. Can record though. What I really don't get is that it wasn't doing this yesterday! I'm wondering if I have to set the date and time to make the "stby" go away. But I can't figure out how to do it!! Any ideas?????
Sony Handycam CCD-TRV99 NTSC Hi-8 model, you might find one at local consignment store or online market place, but google that and you should get some options in your area. Full Review of the camera here if you want to see it: ua-cam.com/video/_qApKdj1hVM/v-deo.html
Cool footage. But I would have de-interlaced it before exporting and uploading. And also, why is the aspect ratio wrong? By the way. Can I ask you, how long does it take you to edit one episode of the Air Crash Investigation? I'm also an editor, mostly on different documentary projects. That's why I'm curios. Thanks a lot! :)
For some reason the footage wouldn’t de-interlace, no idea why. It was so easy on FCP 7. Aspect wrong because sir imported into avid 16:9, takes forever to transcode and was trying to get the thing done in a single day (2 hours) so didn’t want to waste another 2 hours re importing it. Air crash is a 7 week edit schedule. Doing another one now.

@@SaltyLemonaid123 ONE month later, notifications darn it. Sorry mate, the Bookstore is at 366 Adelaide Street West in Toronto.
Bash me if you want, but I actually love this old camera video quality. Its giving a 2000'ish touch to the video.
I like it as well.:)
This made me feel like it was in 2007 UA-cam, I love it!
I just wish youtube was around for grade 10 math...would have got factoring down a heck of a lot quicker than I did ;). Thanks for the comment mate!
2007?? 1997**
97 big time lol. So 97
I like the quality of it and the old school effect it gives, actually kind of want one...
I’m so happy it works because I dig the look as well. I saw one at a very brave camera sale for $100. I really want a VHS. That model from back to the future specifically ;)
Mark Holtze oh yeah nice reference haha ;)
this is my favorite block I wish more people were filming with these kinds of camcoders that would be cool
@@MarkHoltze Even if you don't appear on camera as much, you can run a VO. This is one of the best 'vlogs' I've watched in months. Seriously.
Awe thanks man. I jammed the day because of it as well lol. It was the last youtube video I cut on avid.
my good friend of mine, his mom just gave us a camcorder like this and we’re so stoked, it just adds another layer to film and video production, but thank you for this video, it deserves thousands and thousands of more views.
Have so much fun! It’s an odd sense of freedom it brings. Definitely adds a new layer. When you can capture it in camera ;)
This camera made this video a classic
Hi8 just oozes 90s charm and I love it! I've found that I can actually get some really good results if some time is spent setting the focus and exposure manually, and you can tape some aspect ratio guides over the LCD screen to shoot for that. Convert it to 24fps in editing software and it's surprising just how vintagely Filmic you can make it look. Shame there was no high frame rate recording for smooth slow motion, but otherwise this format was to 90s kids what Super-8 was to the 70s.
Totally agree. With a good converter you can really make this look work. Love it as well. Camera is work horse.
I still use my vhs c camcoder from 2003 and I love it
That’s awesome! Do you use the camera as the deck for viewing or one of those VHS-Adapters?
Mark Holtze I hook my camcorder up to my computer using a video capture device I use the easy cap Capture card and software is called honest tech and it’s good software I use the sp Mode sometimes and I use the ep speak setting I can get one hour and 30 minutes out of it I burned my videos to DVD but I’m having trouble trying to upload them to UA-cam I don’t have Internet at my house I have to go places but I hope one day I can get them on UA-cam dude your videos and I hope to see more videos using the high eight camcorder that will be awesome
Tiight. Needs the 4:3 ratio to get the whole experience imo though.
Ya avid brought all the footage in HD and stretched it. It took hours and didn’t want to do it all over again. Been using it proper since :)
Didn't some later Hi8 and Video8 cams have a true widescreen mode from my understanding though?
My father still has footage from 1999/2000 with a camera quality similar to this and a majority of it is me at the age of 1 and 2, I’m now 21 and feeling old af anyway this is an awesome video
21 you’re still a pup lol. ;) thanks mate.
Oh that filter is painful...it's like, did you even 1994? Clearly no lol.
Your collection sounds amazing, what are you using to capture the footage?
@@MarkHoltze Well said!!
I love Handicam's framerate, it's so fluid.
I love it. I recently picked up an old hanycam 8 for cheap, and have been having a blast too.
So much fun!
I love how funny and quirky he is!
I feel like I’m stuck in 2005! Amazing video
Haha, thanks Nas. It’s a great camera to shoot with,- pain to digitize.
I have this exact camera and have been wanting to do something like this for forever. I kind of collect vintage video cameras, and I recently came across an old over-the-shoulder VHS camera that I plan on taking to an 80's party this weekend. Should be fun! Cant wait to see people's faces 😅
Such a good camera! It will be the talk of the party if you bring it man! That’s so much fun! Now I want to hear how the party goes. :)
Im still using my Sony handycam til this day. Everything just look more nostalgia in that quality.
Totally! It’s the new 8mm film!
I friggin love the idea and the aesthetic. It's like a Beastie Boy's music video! And also I think it proves the point that content is king!
VHS and High 8 Analog are coming back full circle! Retro HIP is back in business! :)
Much cheaper than 8mm film stock which i've been messing around with, but LOVE the different formats when they're properly motivated.
Wow this is actually super cool, I want more vloggers to shoot with this cam
It doesn't do cinematic slow motion very well ;). It's also a bit of a pain to digitize the footage, but outside of those two things, I completely agree! Why DON"T they. Such a great camera.
Wow man i loved your video here need more
Keep the 4:3 ratio... But man, what a throwback. Very cool
It's like the modern day 8mm film look for us now! That's in part why I like it so much!
I'm getting crazy AFV vibes from this. awesome vlog!
Fun Fact: 4k was invented in 2003, 4 years after the 1990's
That’s cool! I remember the early elements of 4k how impressive it was and how expensive the storage was.
I'm used to watching old handycam footage in 4:3 with the black bars but it was quite nice with the stretch here
Avid imported all the footage so I kind of had to just go with it. I was trying to do it all in a single day and it was a long one lol.
@@MarkHoltze that's alright, the stretch actually looks good to me. The audio levels seemed to be quite high or peaking above 0 dB (20 secs to 50 secs for example) but I guess that's been something you have fixed now or would probably cringe yourself a bit at now
Awesome! Gives me confidence that getting a camcorder is the right decision for me to record our hiking trips!
It’s so much fun. I keep videos on flash USB drives. I always have the master tapes as backup but I have some of the important ones on my HD.
@@MarkHoltze thank you for answering!
Always, here if you have any other questions :)
@@MarkHoltze could you do a video on uploading videos from a camcorder to UA-cam?
Mayday!? My favourite show! Love this video cuz, keep up the awesome work.
Thanks Ty. I'll give you a call when I come down for Engine 6167 story.
It has a really cool look to it tbh, this makes me wanna go out and try to find an old camcorder to film on
Ya it’s loads of fun and you can really be creative with this look, that’s now retro and in demand. The camera is a beast, can’t believe it still works so well all these years later.
You should def look into it.
Ur camera and editing skills are amazing
Thanks James. :)
Great editing , great video.. loved all the old clips you tied in with the vlog.. killer vlog hands down..
Thanks mate. It was fun. Forgot how annoying it is to digitize tapes. Modern cams drag and drop files, this rewind and play while record. Kind of have to baby sit it so clear the day when it comes time to digitize.
Seeing an iPhone through a 1980s camera seems bizarre lol
*late 90s
Doc brown travelled to 2015 after all 😊
My mom still uses that exact camera to film Christmas, etc.
Lol that's awesome! It's such a workhorse the fact it's still chugging along speaks volumes ;)
Very cool video ! and a Toronto local as well neat !
:) thanks mate! Nice to meet another local! Although on UA-cam Canada is local but you’re like next door lol
hahaha yes exactly ! :)
Old camera qualities feels like an instagram filter lol
Yea the filters came from something
Just imagine shooting the cameras of today in the late 90s and early 00s
We be so cool, you'd need a $20k tv to be able to enjoy it though lol.
I found my handycam today, very exciting :D
Nice!
LOVIN IT. FEELS LIVE LIVING MUMBLECORE FILM.
It does doesn't it! Shooting with a lot more lately! IT's SO much fun!
MAYDAY! I love that show. Great video!
thanks Lou! (I love that show as well) :)
New challenge: Shoot a video with this, but also edit this video with the equipment with the tech of the early 2000
Give me some tape to tape editing gear and i'll do it! lol. I still have my high school comm tech instructions on how to perform an edit....roll tape on deck one, mARK IN, roll to end of clip, mark out...EDIT START and watch the magic happen.
I like this idea a lot
This getting me back to old days
Like 2007 and those days everything is natural not over editing shows...
I like old days its really have more natural on telling story its feeling rare people well understand only camera's society will understand its not only the quality of the picture not 4k or expensive rhodes mic its all about your story and u have prove it in this video
U have remembered me with american made movie when tomy cruze vloging (secret information) thats was a great movie
First time saw your channel and i saw this video not thinking immediatly subscribe ❤
This reallyy looks like a 20 year old vlog haah but its actually good
Lol, I have so many things like shitninsjot with this camera that I never edited. I should cut them. Vlogs from 1999
Great piece...but what I had hoped was a comparison of your old camera compared to a modern version SONY to SONY with the same features.
Just by using the camera it made it feel like it was recorded a long time ago
Perfect for use in narratives when you want to make things feel dated :) Like 8mm film.
Love this! This makes me so happy!
:) makes me happy to hear that!
this is my personal opinion I think the video quality of the old camcorder looks really good how many honestly it doesn’t look that bad I think it looks a little bit better in the HD video Quality because the HD looks kind of I wouldn’t say blurry but it has all get more Texter if that makes any sense but it’s just my personal opinion man
Fair enough mate.
:)
I like how the fps of video tape is so smooth
30fps standard :)
@Boomerang Channel its so fluid
The audio sounds better then today's cameras.
Surprisingly good especially because it’s not a digital signal so it loses quality when when signal passes through it.
Ughhh I love this
:) so much fun! :)
Even I have my fathers 20 years old camera I was recording with it and I was enjoying recording with old camera
( at least VHS was 2 hours and same quality but still ) quality is in some ways superior.
im thankful that i still own a complete set of camcorder with all accersories from 2006
It's weird to see the video itself being less-than-HD while all added captions are crisp looking.
I wish I could have degraded them. It’s true. Old captions especially were so big.
Wow, you're video is really cool and well made, loved it! Reminds me of 90's MTV shows for some reason.
Thanks Lucas. It was fun video experiment with my old camera.
@@milgeekmedia 4:3 is cool, explore that found footage idea, I think you might be onto something there.
this was awesome... great job dude.
Thanks MrDedana! Was fun.
You edit the show which literally gave me a fear of flying!
So you're finally getting to work season 18?
That's a nice picture. What crash is the episode covering?
Hi8 colors look more natural than the new camera and more energetic than the modern tbh
I been waiting for the new film stock and camera.. that was back in 2016 with the camera and Jan 2017 with the Ektachrome announcement.
Ya they haven't been forth coming with the updates since. I suspect some kinks they are working out.
Video8 had one weird thing that VHS-C didnt have.
If you shook the camera while recording it would invite head skip and a little noise.
VHS or VHS-C would be able to handle it very well
The reason was, Video8 had a small and sometimes thinner tape. VHS/VHS-C ha a wider tape which helped it ride along and say alined with the heads.
I didn’t know that! Thanks so much! Super cool!
I did a video on my process here: ua-cam.com/video/oYMszuMyGG4/v-deo.html
I would use S-VIDEO cable as your video out vs RCA cables and you should have a better transfer image.
He’s all good. Good thing he got it out of his system before covid ;)
@@MarkHoltze Awesome, thanks man!!! I will let you know when it´s done. Have a nice day!!!
It was actually ok.
The content helped lose the notice of noisy, grainy, 1990s quality.
Proof that quality is important, but content is king.
Poor SD blown up to HD prob didn’t help the noise. Also had I used S-Video cable might have helped as well.
Content is king for sure.
great video...you dont happen to know the exact model? I've got a handy cam but want one with the flippy screen!
This one is the: Sony Handycam vision CCD-TRV99 NTSC
Hi8 looks cool and better as quality for me
I have a 230E model and i am still impressed from a 1999
The resolution isnt bad at all but make you nostalgic and the best thing is to shoot with that 20 year old camera the future that wait us and see it in that old resolution i will try to start that and go to shoot everything i have a couple of tapes that i will move it to dvd because are old footage from my life in 2006 when i was a baby
Btw my camera can hold for 2 hours maximum the battery has some tiny problems
But they dont bother me from using this beautiful historic item
I hope this will be a trend and companys start making this tapes so we can make more of these old videos
From the age of 4 i had a mania with cameras and i still have with old computers old games and old cameras well i like the old than the new
Sometimes the new is nice but not always
The new can be awful i dont like the thing with the need of no thickness on the phones or the cameras using the tape i love the old and companies most understand that the new isnt always the way to win money
Is there any extra voice recorder/microphone ? Or is it original camera's microphone?
This was 100% camera mic.
Good luck!
Thanks a lot Mark!! I just discovered you, but You definitely already are one of my favorite YTers!
Thanks for those kind words mate. Let me know if you find anything cool that works for you.

I still use a minidv camcorder and an old Samsung smx f30. Standard definition is lively and looks cool. I still like hd but this feels and looks professional to me
Awesome video and resurrection, is the stretched view ratio intentional?
Thanks, it was actually by accident. I cut this in AVID Media Composer and imported all the footage (took hours to transcode everything as I don't like AMA linking editing) but its as brought in at aspect ratio of the timeline which was 1920x1080 and I should have just kept it standard. I've corrected the issue moving forward (cut most of my stuff at home now on Premiere Pro anyway) so I don't have this transcoding issue.
More vlogs with this camera please
Ya I think so as well hehe. I have an idea for a night vision test with this. Forest, winter, nighttime! ;) love this camera!
Que cool!! Me encanta esa camara!
How did you widescreen the footage? Nice seeing TO skate footage ... I used to skate and film with a vhs c camera in TO lol
The wide was actually how aVID imported it. I forgot to switch default import settings from 1920x1080 16:9 to the "native resolution". It essentially just stretched the footage horizontal.
The skate stuff is nostalgic for me as well, I had to shoot it just for that effect.
This is great
Thanks Cristian. Had fun with this one, been too long now I should do another lol.
Where do you store your videos? I am going to buy a camcorder so I can record our camp trips... our hiking trips and I tried using my phone but not enough space... so do I use sd cards? Or put on a DVD? You have videos from childhood so how do I save mine? Help!
I love Air Crash Investigation!
Me tOO!!!! :) Thanks for watching, keeps the show going :)
i still use this stuff for skate vids
Yes! Big reason why I shot the skaters; throw back to 99 ;) rad you still use it
@@MarkHoltze yeh that front shuv down the set was mad, yeh check out my channel for some 80s/90s nostalgia, in t boys on vhs i use a Panasonic 80s broadcasting vhs cam
Yo that was way pretty awesomeness 🙌
Thanks mate. That camera is still a boss even amongst my new gear.
wow i need to find my old camcorder - this is so cool!
Yes you do! It's so much fun ;)
I still use this camera. Best quality
Love it!
Haha this was actually good, well done
Ha thanks. Was fun to shoot. Felt like 1999 again ;)
how does it work? how do you put the footage into digital? what's the process? thanks
I did a video on the process here. It might be easier to show vs tell:
ua-cam.com/video/oYMszuMyGG4/v-deo.html&app=desktop
Capture using an rca to USB adapter and edit the footage inside exiting software. It’s great.
thank you
love this old school cam, how did u edit this
Thanks mate, I had to first capture all the footage. You can use an RCA to USB adapter and it works well.
Love it man!
Thanks Stephen!
I Love Mayday!!!
Working on first ep of new season now ;)
If you bob-deinterlaced this video, you could have gotten full 60fps motion from old analog video, which is how the video was actually made.
If you go to record though the stby isn't an issue? I wonder if it's a safety thing that automatically clicks when you go to VTR mode. Hmmm, curious.
@@MarkHoltze I gave up and took it in to a shop. Not exactly sure what it was (not sure they know for sure either), but it's working now!!! Yay!!!!
Could u please give me a link to this camera I would love to buy a camera like this ? Cheap?
@@MarkHoltze Okay, I get it. Thanks for your reply and good luck with your work! :)
