300 Year Old House Gets a New Roof - renovation / reconstruction Pt-2

- Part 2 of the project I've been working on over the last couple of months. CC on for subtitles. After we assembled the wooden structure, it was time to cover it. First we nailed 12mm osb on top of our structure, then we covered it with water insulation membrane which is vapor permeable. Then the vertical and horizontal battens were nailed and screwed trough osb into glulam. The Old roof was covered in baked clay tiles which were mortared into place, we used the same shape modern tiles which we glued together using PU foam so the strong gusts of wind couldn't lift them up. Also each tile is connected to the batten with a hook. We usually don't mortar the ridge but we did in this case because conservators demanded keeping the original look.

the beauty of the classical music in the background truly describes the classical quality of your work. Respect!
That new roof looks beautiful. You guys did a fantastic job on it! It was very interesting watching the whole roof come together. Those incredible drone shots were great at showing us how the new roof ties the building to the rest of the community. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah my fiancee says if these two vids wont bring people to Croatia, nothing will ;)
I like music. I like wood working. This channel is perfect to me.

I'm just glad that you guys didn't install composition on that building.
Wow! Great views from that roof top. Fantastic work!
Simply, stunning! A work of art, a masterpiece! Thank you for sharing!
A masterpiece that stands out!
Very nice install (again!), I really like the roof tile, we don't see it often here in Belgium. Over here we use something like Gutex Ultratherm (there are other brands too) to use on top of the structure instead of the 12mm osb. Although I think the minimum thickness is 50mm because it's also giving isolation (you can go up to 160mm ). You don't need an extra water insulation membrane when the pitch of the roof is 15° or higher and it's a woodproduct and is vapor permeable/moisture regulating. No idea about price, I just like watching video's of people building beautiful stuff and like seeing how they do it in other countries. Glad I found the channel!
Thank you very much! We use different types of construction here also but I would say this is the most common method used. People here unfortunately need decades to start believing new materials..
wow what a beautiful view and home
Another great job by the Lignum crew! Excellent job. Thanks for making and sharing this video!
Much appreciated!:)
Good job!
Thank you so much for making these great videos!
Thank you very much for watching them :)

Very interesting
Love your work, its a real privilege to work on an old home like this and keep it alive. The location is magnificent
Primošten / Croatia
Yes there is something special in working on old buildings, but it is a combination of love and hate. Hate mostly because of absence of any right angle, true verticals or horizontals.. ;)
what a beauty.
please show us more of the surrounding area next time.

You're amazing.☺️👍
Stunning location!

@@lignumchannel yes, Don't forget to stop by my channel

Nice video 💐💐💐👍👍👷♂️👋
Thank you so much 🙂
Amazing job! You did the roof the same way we do it in Portugal. The only thing I don't like is using mortar in the ridge clay tiles, when you need to replace one cracked tile, you end up replacing a few more. In my country tile manufacturers have small ceramic pieces to close the gaps between the tiles. At least I hope you used a "weak" mortar to allow for thermal expansion.
Thank you! 😁Yes, we use the same here but conservators wanted to do it same as sorounding houses.
@@lignumchannel OK, next time tell those conservators to worry about the roof of the house in bottom left corner of the video at 8:32 . It looks like Corrugated Fibre Cement Roofing Sheets (maybe with asbestos if made in 80's).
Parabéns, show
WOOOOW !
Looks awesome. I assume those little bump up's are for venting?
I hit the like before starting the video. As I said. 😄🙏🏻🌞
:) Thank you very much!
nice, what about adding red color inside concrete to be same as roof? You can do this by collecting roof tiles dust and mixing together...
Nice!
But can you explain why there're 3 or 4 tiles that left a little-bit higher? One that cover rows from top, near roof ridge. it's quite hard to imagine that there will be enough ventilation through that openings...
Thank you! 🙂 Those tiles are for the ventilation from the toilets. The whole tile roof has many openings , each bottom tile is spaced 2-3mm from each other and air circulates through those openings.
nice
Thank you!
Hello folks your Roof is ABeautifull work of art nice I like quality in Roofs keep up the good work cheers from Australia 👍👍👍💪💪💪🪚🪜🔨🪓😃😎🧨🧨🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Glad you enjoyed it and you think we did a good job! Thank you and Greetings from Croatia! :D
Haha man that was awesome. Such a great project and one to be proud of for sure! Curious how wide the sheets of OSB decking were? Here in the US our sheet goods are 4'x8' or 1.2x2.4 meter? Thanks again for making and posting these videos. Great work!
We most often use half the size. They are tongue and grove.
The full size ones are used too, but smaller ones are easier to handle.
Looks great! But why dont you put insolation between the membrane and the timber battens to create warm roof insulation? Works great in hot summers and during the winter.
Glad you like it! :)We didn't contract the thermal insulation for this project. Other company will put it underneath the osb in between the beams.
Always top knotch guys. I m relly curious what will happen with foam adhesive under roof tiles after few years under hot sun.
Thank you!😁 as long as it stays out of direct uv radiation, nothing happens.
As long as the air pollution levels are not signifiicant (which by the looks of the stunningly beautiful coast should not be an issue), the adhesive compound should not disintegrate for some time.
Was surprised to see a mortared verge & ridge tiles, thought you would have used dry fix, and was the flashing a light metal material ? it looked very neat anyway, I slowed it down to 0.25 to enjoy it for longer :)
Here in Croatia along coast during winter we have Bora winds up to 180 kmph that can have hurricane force gusts up to 200/220 kmph, no large overhangs and ridges are mortared to stop wind going under and picking roof. You can see it here ua-cam.com/video/lJmV2K4k0cY/v-deo.html
@@32dras I just looked at that Igor, Not a nice day for a picnic at the beach! :)
I'd love for your company work on my house! Your workmanship is impeccable! But I don't think I could afford it! :-)
Thank you man. I don't think we are to expensive, we wouldn't get these projects if we were :)
What kind of foam do you use beween the tiles and is this normal these days?
Very nice work. Is this Primošten? We own a house on Cres and the roof is very similar design, although is much older :)
Pozdrav!
indeed, looks like it's the Restaurant Maestral building
Yes, it is! Vila Fenč:)
7:59 why are those 3 tiles (on the second row from the top) standing so upright, comparatively? How does foam for the tiles - as binding material - fare in longevity compared to more traditional materials?
Those tiles are for ventilating the toilets, There will be pipes connected to underneath them. The foam is very durable and nothing happens to it if it is not in direct uv light. Old tiles on this roof were placed into mortar and the roof was much much heavier. I guess Foam has no downsides compared to mortar in this case.
nice work and setting... How long is that (PU?) foam supposed to last ? I've had issues with foam about 10-12 years after installation... a pain really
Was the foam exposed to sunlight? Ultraviolet light will break it down.
This foam is shielded from direct sunlight, so it could last an eternity.
@@peterslegers6121 good point, not exposed to direct sunlight, since located a few cm inside an opening and under half clay tiles (roof window cut-out where halves had been used to make a straight line) so a bit of stray light could have broken it down over time.
A couple of questions. Is the spray foam to keep rodents and birds out of the roof? Aesthetics aside, I have long considered re-roofing a small shed I have using 3-in ABS piping slit length ways and using one of the halves to cover the Union of two adjoining pieces. Is there any particular advantage to working with shorter lengths and shingling them? Or, for a very small structure, might it not work just as well to use full lengths? Perhaps part of the reason is so you can repair a small section without taking everything apart?
the foam is to keep the tiles down during 200 kmh wind gusts which are not uncommon here. As for the abs pipes, to be honest this is the first time I heard of using them as roofing although I guess it should work. I would use full length if you ask me if aiming for simplicity.
Interesting, I've never seen can foam used to set roofing tiles before.
it is substitute for mortar, which is needed to glue and weight roof tiles down, because of strong winds etc.
@@izoyt I guess you need that when you use the classic ones, all the ones I've laid have had interlocking groves and you lock them in with clips or a screw.
@@Fekillix you need anything, when strong winds starts, believe me.
I know the building must be smiling.
😁
How come you use foam between the tiles?
Good question! It would definitely work as an adhesive to hold everything down better in high winds but how did they manage before foam???
@@kevinchamberlain7928 Before foam mortar was used.
Just like the rakes and ridge cap.
Before foam, people used mortar where strong winds are common, it holds the tiles down.
Some foam is visible between the tiles of the top ridge... isn't that foam going to degrade with by UV?
Yes, it will break apart so it won't be visible any more. The part in shade will stay intact.
Really nice roof! Shame about the foam though
Why shame? Without it, it wouldn't last a season, neighbors would have tiles in their gardens after first bura hits XD
@@lignumchannel I grant you, this problem needs a solution... I just wonder if you could have found an alternative to "plastic glue" - especially since it is an ancient building that you are conserving. How was it done 50, 100, even 2000 years ago - even the romans had roofs very similar to this.
Nice, in which country are you please?
Croatia
What brand of glue is that at 4:49, and where can we get it...
This is low expanding PU glue, any brand will do..

Thank you for the kind response...
You gonna put solar panels on the roof?
I don't think they will..

Guys, I'm British carpenter & joiner (over 30 years experience) and am seeking to live/work outside UK. Croatia is on my "Hit List." Would you consider hiring? Genuine question!
Not sure if they are hiring but theres big demand for skilled workers especially in construction in Croatia
You could probably easly find a decent job. But I dont know how would be with language. Most locals dont speak english.
@@V8Tomek What do you mean by locals, most ppl in Croatia speaks English and a lot of construction workers are from abroad

I’m not convinced the building below was 300 years old
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 well that just shows the lack of history by your side and lack of knowledge about Croatia
Geen isolatie vreemd
Робота якісна.
Задумка жахлива.
Треба було зробити панорамне вікно замість стіни з видом на море, змінити нахил даху, прибрати непотрібні опори серед приміщення.

I don't know what kind of legislation there is in Croatia, but in Italy the security officer would go straight to jail if someone see you working on a roof without any type of safety device (like fall arrest harness). I have been watching your videos for many years, but see this kind of work at height carried out in this way leaves me somewhat perplexed. Your videos are being viewed by a lot of people and I think you should set an example by working safely, or giving reasons why the devices are not being used, or the risk is to set a bad example for the viewers. Please be careful, many other works and musical instruments deserve to be born!
Where are their safety harnesses?
They're not wearing any. The building is surrounded by scaffolding and that can be considered a safety barrier.
@@nutwiss not really.
