Walks in England - Acid Bath Murderer in Horsham

- I have a connection with John George Haigh, the Acid Bath Murderer, who in 1949 murdered Olive Durrand-Deacon. He was held in a Horsham police station before a hearing in the town hall. Haigh murdered six people that was confirmed but he claimed more, dissolving the bodies in sulphuric acid in a large oil drum.

My great grandad arrested him
I first learned of John Haigh when I was a kid after reading a book on famous murderers that my father brought home from the local library. So INTERESTING to see you walk the streets of Horsham. I’ve never been there. 🙂

Hague was hung at Wandsworth Prison, August 10th 1949. Appararently the cell door from cell No 2, is in Horsham museum.
Your correct the cell door is still there in the museum saw it only last week

Sorry a bit late to the party. Just a little post script. When Haigh went to trial at Lewes he was prosecuted by The Attorney General Hartley Shawcross ( later to be Lord Shawcross). Shawcross lived in the house named Chantry in the Causeway in Horsham just a short distance away from the Old Town Hall where Haigh was arraigned. Shawcross served as the chief British prosecutor of Nazis at the Nuremberg war trials. The steps Haigh is seen walking up leads to what would later become the Horsham registrars office where bizarrely my brother got married.

Hi Richard I can remember going in that building back in the late 1980s lots of times as my nan and grandad worked there all the stories we heard about that place were great and very interesting a little piece of history in that very small road . I remember going in there many times as a child by this time the actual cell was number 2 cell and it had been turned into a kitchen back in the 80s people who worked there would tell us lots of stories about the haigh case a good bit of local history GREAT VIDEO

Yes,I also read this crime story for the first time, in a book, 'Written in Blood' by Mr. Colin Wilson. There he had described in detail, this and several other infamous crime stories of serial killers of 18th,19th and 20th centuries in Britain, France, Germany and the US. Quite chilling and horrendous indeed.
My Son's Grandmother was born in Ifield road in Crawley, she recalled when Haighs workshop in West Green was sealed off to the public.

Great video used to live at 7 Queens Street which I found out was at the site of the old Gaol as you mention.
By the way the railway goes to Portsmouth not Brighton and whilst living near many large vehicles used to get stuck under that Iron Bridge.

Yes indeed, I did see the film. Very good, although I think inaccurate. All good fun and hard to believe such people exist, until you switch on the radio or turn on your smartphone.

Very interesting video. My grandfather was the village bobby in Mannings heath in the 60s and early 70s - he would have known the old police station very well!

I thought the building to the left of the gate, with it's arched entrance and big doors; would have been the police station. The place on the right was part of the terrace and It seems strange that the police would have shared space with neighbors.
Richard, how about checking Crawley (my hometown), in particular the George Hotel where Haigh rented a room and did some of his dastardly deeds. Greetings from Canada.

@@RichardVobes Of that I have no doubt, I left in '76. I recall open pit iron ore mines from roman times in Furnace Green, Dad telling us about Malcolm Campbell testing Bluebird on Tilgate Lake, And Goff's Green Park. Not much else of interest in Crawley, except for we have an airport...
It would be great to have a look inside Peel House to see if there are any signs of it being a police station in the past.
When I was there, it had been refurbished into offices. The company I worked for had quite a large chunk of it with two warehouse sized rooms at the back - I believe the lower floor had been the cells where Haigh was kept. Sadly in 1970s there wasn't so much interest in keeping historic places as there is today.
You should have stayed outside it to tell us about it, then started walking again....

On MURDER MAPS on Yesterday Channel yesterday it said that John's employer was a friend of his who went to see him in jail in the 1930's and was quite supportive of him actually. Apparently he came to John's house/flat on his request after he had been released, there he coshed him and murdered him and attempted the first acid bath experiment, which didn't go exactly to plan......
Yes he demanded money and when he didn't get it he murdered McSwan and tipped his 'sludged' remain down in the street sewer.

I worked with a colleague yesterday Richard whos grandfather was a policeman. He was an officer in one of the famous photos escorting him on the steps. He was also in charge of him whilst in his cell at the town hall. Apparently, he was a very intelligent individual. My colleague told me that he would complete the crossword in the telegraph newspaper whilst his grandfather completed a more modest tabloid. At the end of his shift they would swap newspapers. His grandmother asked his grandfather when he returned home with the telegraph and fully completed crossword why he had that paper ? When he explained she apparently threw out all the papers with completed crosswords he had already brought home! She wanted nothing in the house linked to a murderer. It would be quite something to have those papers now, obviously a little morbid but interesting none the less. Just thought you would find that interesting. Kind regards.

My father new Haigh as a dodgy businessman not someone that you would get involved with, they drank in the same pub he remembers him saying several times i am of to the country for the weekend which crawley was at that time when he was arrested for the murders it was a great shock to all the regulars of the pub.

What happened to the acid man once they caught him?
They took John George Haigh to Lewes Assizes, tried him and he was found guilty. It was then Hanged. Not before the newspapers made a huge mint out of the story - he had also claimed to have drunk the blood of his victims. But that was a lie to try and get away with an insanity plea.
Oh yes. I know all aout Haigh. I once recorded a podcast about him.
He was hanged in Wandsworth Prison in London. The gallows there were only removed a few years ago and there is a You Tube video showing the execution cell just prior to demolition.
