I road on this train a number of times through the years and love it. It nice you can hope on the train after a half day of skiing, and open a few beers and relax on the way home. My only complaint is there is only 1 train per day. JR, please schedule more trains during winter. Also, if you are into the "city to the slopes" experience, you can try the Joetsu Shinkansen. Tokyo Station to Gala Yuzawa in 2 hours. And the gondola drop right into the station. There is on onsen too.
Meh, most people want to arrive at a ski resort when the lift opens not at noon. Also you never said anything about how to go back to Tokyuo from Hakuba. Do you take the same line? I think that one departs at 3PM or something, so you have like 2 hours of skiing.
Yes, but if you stay the night you have 4h after arrival, check in and renting gear + 3h night skii at many resorts. Then the next day you can skii from 8 AM to 2pm and still catch the train back

I dont ski , but this might be an good get away from the hellish Japanese summers as well.
Hmmm, thinking about plans... I reckon I would forward my luggage from Tokyo to a hotel so I could just go straight to the ski resort :)
How much does it cost to rent a snowboard or skis and skiboots for a day?
Depends on if you want regular or pro gear, but if you rent at the slope, it's around ¥3500 ($22) for basic skis/snowboard+boots per day
what keeps you from reaching terminal velocity in a slope like this??? i'll probably end up hugging a tree in no-time...
The fear of dying 😅
