My mother was from the Gesunda area of Sweden, visited every year for the first 25 years of my life - give or take, sadly less frequently for the last 30. In Sweden, you never have to worry about communications - Find a 8+ish - 80ish FARMOR (sp?) they all will understand English - and be willing to help. My father was a Pan Am Captain - so I have been all over the world - Sweden - maybe biased as a Half-Swede - but I have never found a More Helpful Culture - Norway, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, and Austria are all fighting to be who is Nicest and Most Helpful - Germany in the 80's was Efficient, tad cold, but very efficient and extremely Punctual! - Polite and helpful, yes, Friendly - Not so Much! Piece of ADVICE - if you are traveling in Northern Europe, be on TIME! Unlike Amtrack - I will leave it at that! Merry Christmas - Happy Holidays to everyone. Visit the Nordic countries, you won't regret it!

I've travelled this stretch several times, from Skåne (=Scania, the southernmost province of Sweden, up to Luleå, Kiruna or Abisko, all in Norrbotten. The train used to be called "Lapplandspilen" (the Lapland Arrow) and the travel time through the entire length of the country would be around 24 hours, often from one afternoon to the next. A very scenic ride in some parts. These days the distance has been separated in two, you have to change trains at Stockholm ( I think back in the day it didn't pass through the capital but about a hundred miles further west).

It had a through-carriage (A SEATING car no less) that ran all the way from Copenhagen to Narvik. It was known as the ultimate Interrail challenge.

When I was working deep in the fjords in Norway, something that always amazed me, was how they all always try to reply to you in English, no matter how good or bad, no matter how north you go, I see the north of Sweden is the same, the gentleman on the bus having a chat, what a chap!

So, the train to Abisko is nothing special, people just live up there normally. Once in 2005 I got off in Vassijaure on Christmas Day to go hiking up there to one of the cabins, but then a snow storm came in, so I just stuck it out in the station building until it came back up from Narvik and just hung out in Luleå with friends there.
Awesome you had a good time though. Norrbotten is the best part of Sweden.

This train is really not that special. It has been running since the steam age, and northern Sweden and Norway are not really that "extreme". If you want to experience a REALLY cold train, try travelling on the Amur-Yakutsk Mainline

9:18 You have put on 7 layer of track pants or underwear... yet you still wear your everyday sneakers instead of warm winter boots (surely available in Stockholm) ... Do you still have all your toes ?

These trains are from the 60s, made in Sweden. Still the only ones that can handle -40°C. Nowadays they unfortunately cancel service if colder than -35, they don’t have any backup plan to heat the train anymore of the power goes out and the diesel in the evacuation buses freezes. The track around kiruna transport more than half of all railway gods in the country, kilometer long mining trains through the nothingness. Big breakedown a year ago, might be sabotage but no evidence.
