Been driving my 850GS for more than a year now, and having had R1250GS for some time as well, the 850GS is noticeable lighter when you start driving actively (both on and off road) + its a lot cheaper to get spare-parts. Keep that in mind as well

Your point about ABS is excellent. I have it on my Indian and it probably saved me from laying my bike down when a car pulled out in front of me and almost immediately stopped to turn left. The ABS helped me keep the large cruiser under control as I locked up both brakes. By the way, you handled the situation with the car pulling out in front of you without panicking. You kept your cool. Always enjoy your videos. Ride safe!

My Triumph T120 is the first bike I've ever owned with ABS. Haven't needed it yet, thankfully, but when I tested it by cramming on the brakes on an empty wet road they worked like a champ.

Balanced and fair review; really like the “5 things” format. That said, and this may not be so fair, I’d like if you ranked the 5 things - or, does each variable have the same weight / importance?

Another interesting review. The one thing that's missing is what this one is like two up and two and loaded. Appreciate that's not easily done for your reviews but it can be a key factor. As the 1250 now has oodles of torque which makes it's significantly different to the 1200 therefore the 850 can't possibly compare.

Mr. Flyer- The one item which I find is missing from the current BMW GS machines is small, but it would be a helpful thing if they would include some sort of small box or covered crannie where the registration and insurance papers could be kept in a safe and dry condition; it"s a helpful feature to have. (Parenthetically, as you are a pilot I reckon you have to marvel at the skill it must have taken to land that Spitfire perfectly atop its pylon!)

I have not tried an 850GSA, but having owned an F750GS, ridden an F850GS and now switched to owning an R1250GS, I would advise people to think long and hard about choosing the F series bikes. You may be right in your assessment that the F850GSA is 85% of a 1250 and therefore a bargain, but to me it misses a crucial part of the GS experience, which is the front suspension. On the F series bikes the front suspension is not adjustable and not ESA - and for me it's too soft which causes handling issues and significant dive under braking. And I totally agree with you about the weight / centre of gravity. The smaller engined bike may be lighter but it certainly doesn't feel it. Having said all of that, thanks for the video! :D

I just had a lengthy ride on one of these, not one mention of the continuous flow of exhaust/engine heat pouring directly onto both of my shins. Maybe if you always wear high ADV boots every ride it can dampen the flow of hot air that can’t be minimized. The buzzy nature of the parallel twin which isn’t the worst but isn’t the best either.
The crap/unimpressive power in 4th,5th or 6th gear. Sure it seems peppy in 1st and 2nd gear. The engine sounds like it contains extra bits rattling around inside. The exhaust/intake noise is pleasant under hard acceleration and this may be the loudest over stock BMW at idle. The high pitched howling noises from the plastics at speeds between 40-50mph. The ergonomics are nice, but the pegs are placed right where your feet would want to be, so you’ll have to choose in-front or behind the pegs. The TFT is excellent and easy to read at all angles, the controls and switchgear was easily understandable. The seat is good while riding. It has the same plastic hand guards as all other BMW GS’s.
    But, eh…
I’m not getting paid for my review.

Very informative as usual MF. I was wondering is the standard 850GS as top heavy as the 850 GS Adventure as I think that bike would probably be the better option for many riders if the weight thing was their major issue. What amazes me is if you look on BMW's website the monthly PCP cost for the 850 is less than half what the 1250 is so for those looking to finance their bike the smaller one could well be the way to go. As an example the 850GSA is £119 a month with a £2451.89 deposit while the 1250 GSA is £174.25 a month with a £2912.04 deposit both on 5000 miles a year. Obviously neither are the bells and whistles models but it does show what good value the 850 is and it might be an idea for you to quote PCP figures as well as the cost to buy outright as many now have bikes on PCPs so this would I guess be useful to a significant part of your audience?

This is my very first motorcycle and learned how to ride on it, the weight was what scared me the most (that's the reason why I didn't choose the 1250 GS I think weight difference is around 100 kg)
I couldn't be happier, I dropped it twice while moving it in the garage (more like gently laying it down because when it leans it comes to a point where you can't lift it back up but I'm big enough to lay her down gracefully, my only complain is that the suspension is not adjustable and I find it a bit too soft, I'm a big boy at 6'4" and 250 pounds and Everytime I get on it the front suspension sinks a little too much for my liking when braking, I also installed a bigger windshield because the Rallye Version has an even smaller windshield that is useless for touring, apart from that the bike has been a dream, the heated grips are very much welcomed in the cold rainy rides, Cruise control is a must for the highway, and being a new rider the riding modes with variable traction control and ABS have been keeping me safe (at first I was scared of whiskey throttling so I always drove around in rain mode, but it turns out it was a huge mistake because ABS gets super sensitive and would kick in in the slightest of downhills and you can't stop quick enough when it happens so don't use it unless the road is wet).

I’ve spent some time on several with it and find nearly no use in 80% of it. To each their own, I just can’t see the point of most of it. Honestly how often do people really change around the majority of that stuff?

Although you felt the 850 GSA gave 85% of the features of the 1250 GSA, it's worth mentioning the far greater range of seat height options on the large capacity bike.
So ignoring seat width for a moment, for the 1250 GSA we have:
    820 / 840mm (790/810mm (Accessory Low Seat)) - Extra Low / Low Suspension
    870 / 890mm - Low Seat
    890 / 910mm - Standard Seat
    880mm - Low Rallye Seat
    900mm - High Rallye Seat
    A wide range of 790mm to 910mm.
and for the 850 GSA we have:
    835mm - Low Seat
    875mm - Standard Seat
    815mm - Extra Low/ Low Suspension
    875mm - High / Comfort Seat
    890mm - Extra High / Rallye Seat
A comparatively restricted range of 815 to 890 mm.
For the shorter legged incidentally the 750 GS might appeal with:
770mm - Low Suspension Kit (Option)
    790mm - Low Seat (Option/Accessory)
    815mm - Standard Seat
    830mm - Comfort Seat (Option/Accessory)

PK Property Solutions LTD I own four bikes but am seriously considering adding one of these. Superior luggage capacity either for shopping or a rideout with my wife on the back - she likes the backrest - to store our helmets & coats.
I think the low centre of gravity and small wheels makes for nimbleness around town (this purchase will live in the south of France where it’s mostly 😎 but town traffic is v bad).
The ubiquity of super scooters makes mine unlikely to be nicked and the functional finishes are not targets of envy. So you can slide your scooter into the free parking bays with no worries.
Finally it’s different than my other machines.

Yes, if I have to choose between this and a used 2017 model GS1200, I would take the 1200. Almost the same price, and you most probably will get the 1200 with all the touring extras and GPS mount thrown in. Which is something worth to note, as BMW is eager to load the price for all those extras, but not so eager to return your investment in those extras when trading in.

    Hi TMF,
Have you ever compared a BMW with standard suspension to the ESA equipped version?, just wondered as the dealers only seem to have the fully loaded bikes as demo's and always push the same when you ask for a quote, surely non ESA suspension must be perfectly adequate.

£14k for a heavy 850 bike with a few electronic bits and fancy screen nope , you can get a new Tenere t700 for £8400 which is a lot lighter and less electronics to go wrong , I definitely prefer simplicity and lighter weight and ruggedness for this type of bike.
