  • These are not up on Stamps' website yet, but you can order them by emailing him from the site. stampstarantula... He will eventually be adding them to his site.
    Stamps Tarantula recently announced that they would be carrying the "European Style" tarantula enclosures that folks overseas use for their spiders. I had been admiring these enclosures since I saw them in The Spiderman's videos, and was bummed when I discovered they weren't available in the states. Now, thanks to Stamps, I would finally get to try these out.
    Although I resisted the urge to buy any at first (I really didn't need any new enclosures at the time) Theswimmingfox was nice enough to send me some photos of the ones she purchased. Of course, I ordered some later that week.
    Over all, I really like them. I was surprised that the "large" size was as shallow as it was, but I'm trying it out with my Phormictopus cautus violets, and I'll see how it goes. The stackability and hinged doors are both huge pluses, and the crystal clear covers are fantastic. I will say that for folks already using Sterilite, these might not offer enough "bang for the buck". Plus, the sizes are a bit limited.
    Still, they look darned pretty on a shelf... I'll definitely be grabbing some more.

    The reason the plastic is so thin is that when they make plastic thicker it gets more translucent (That's why Sterilite is translucent and not transparent)

      I am LOVING how clear these are. I'd gotten used to the milky sterilite containers, so this was a huge step up in visibility. The smalls are awesome. The larges are a bit shallow, but @Thespiderman said they make them deeper in Europe. I'm going to have to look for those. :)

    I really enjoy watching your videos. You're both knowledgeable and articulate. The methodology with which you re-house your spiders is honed down to a science. I had a few tarantulas in my teen years and am thinking of getting back into the hobby. Very pleased to have found your channel.

      Thank you so much! I really appreciate the comments on the rehousings; I really try to keep things as calm and contained as possible. I figure if I can keep the T from getting spooked, there's less risk of injury to it and myself. You've picked a great time to get back into the hobby...the number of species available now is staggering. Which species are you eyeing?

    • @4evercuber
      @4evercuber 8 років тому +1

      When I was younger my first T was a Honduran Curly hair, followed by a Chilean Rose. This time around I'm probably going to choose one of the Avicularia species, as they are generally on the docile side and tend to web a bit more.

    • @TomsBigSpiders

      Wow, tow awesome starter species. You might want to look at Avicularia versicolor. The color changes are AMAZING, and mine is a very prolific webber.

    These are some of my favourite enclosures for slings! They are takeaway boxes!! They work a charm though with the cheeky little opening lid for food and water! It’s nice that the uk for once has something better than the states! Lolz

    I’ve collected 32 of the 3L versions there like 60 cents each in the UK I keep a mixture of tarantula’s and scorpion’s I would love the brand to make the same size box but twice the height I would definitely keep bigger specimens in them then

  • @TomsBigSpiders

    No problem! The smalls are quite sturdy and convenient for slings, but those larges are just too floppy and shallow.

    Hey quick question, Im getting into some rare roaches and I'm worried about escapes. My question is, does the lid snap on tightly, basically air tight?
    I've looked at ziplock weathertight bins and sterility gasket bins but those are just too large and rather expensive.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  8 років тому

      The smaller ones lock fairly tight, but the larger ones...not so much. I already spoke to another keeper who said one popped open and allowed a spider to escape.

      @TomsBigSpiders  7 років тому +1

      The small ones work great and latch firmly. I've had no issues there. The larger ones? Not so much. haha. The lids pop up much too easily, so they are now collecting dust in my garage. haha

    Petko at the dark den makes his own glass or acrylic, any custom size, cheap to make, his signature design he thought of was for access of easy cleaning, because all the others were getting on his nerves, access into spider or contents from top, front etc plus viewing covers for seeing into burrows. Have a look.

    Wow Tom, just found this video and the first T you rehoused I’d say is the same size as my T. And I now I know that my enclosure is far to big and that must be what’s stressing it out. I have smaller enclosures on the way so hopefully soon it’ll have the appropriate size enclosure and will settle down a lot better. Cheers Ross.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  5 років тому +1

      Hi, Ross! What size did you have yours in? It's not wrong to put slings in smaller enclosures, but I've found that some take a while to settle in.

    • @rossnation8092
      @rossnation8092 5 років тому +1

      Hi Tom Moran
      I don’t know the exact measurements but it looks around 12”x10”x6” ( “ = inches I hope ) so massively too big.
      The new enclosures measurements are 16.5 cm x 11cm x 6.5 cm and is essentially a storage container with a 35mm whole with an air vent glued in to which I will drill a line of between 5-10 1.5 mm air holes to add to ventilation. Would that better suit a juvenile T? Cheers again Ross.

    Hi there. Great video. I'm in Canada and on the lookout for new enclosures.... getting tired of the opaque ones. These look decent enough. My thoughts:
    Pro
    Visibility
    Trap door lid
    Stackable
    Con
    Conern with snap lid breaking
    Not deep enough
    I would be interested in seeing a follow-up video on your use of these. Thanks for the showing thou!😁👏

      Hi again, Ann! :) That's a great list of pros and cons. I can tell you that the snap on the lid does not seem to give out. I'm still using several of these, and they are working fine. That was a concern for me as well! And I'll have to do an update soon. Thanks again!

    Hey good buddy! Why the gloves on this video but the ones before you had no gloves? Bad hair kickers on the last rehouse within this video?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  7 років тому +1

      Hey, bud! That's a great question! I tend to forget to wear them a lot of the time. I should have them on with every New World rehousing, as you actually become less tolerant of hairs over time. If I remember correctly in this case, the last time I rehoused a Phormictopus species, it kicked a lot a of hair, so I put them on for that last one.

    • @michaele.derrickjr.9200
      @michaele.derrickjr.9200 7 років тому +1

      Tom Moran.. Would you recommend the gloves for any transfer or just depends on the species from OW to NW?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  7 років тому

      You won't really need them for Old World species, as they don't have the urticating hairs. I would definitely recommend them with New Worlds. Not only can they kick during rehousings, but their enclosures can also be full of hairs. It's just a precaution, as you can become more sensitive to them over time.

    I'm fairly new to the hobby, but something IV picked up from other hobbies. when rehoming, slowly flooding the tunnel seems to be the easiest, safest, and less stressful way of doing it. not sure if you were aware or knew of it lol. opinion on it if you don't mind?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  7 років тому

      Hello, Cody! Yup, I've heard of it and I've used that technique before (check out this video if you have a moment: ua-cam.com/video/eDwHChIgBUc/v-deo.html ). I really pick my spots using it, though. The first time I attempted the flood technique, the spider didn't come out, and the tunnel collapsed into a muddy mess. It was a disaster. The issue I have with it is that some Ts will have "sub chambers" to their burrows. When you flood it, they can hide in one of these chambers and become trapped. I think that it works well in certain situations, but personally I'm much more comfortable carefully digging them out and cupping them. I've done with with some of the most defensive species, like T. gigas, Chilobrachys sp., and C. lividum without any issues at all. I guess it just depends what your comfort level is! :)

    Hey Tom, great vid!
    I started using these a while back and like you said in the vid, too shallow, but that's where the cons end. Here's the pros as I see it..they are alot clearer than sterilite. I have dozens of sterelite, because I can stack them so good, but not very clear. you can stack em really good, the hinged top is awesome, really nice not to take the whole top off. also I only use the deep ones, others are too shallow. the deep is good for Terrestrial and arboreal. they are def more user friendly than the sterelite, and with the hinge, and the nice clear plastic they are a win.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  8 років тому

      I agree completely. Like you said the hinged door and the transparency of these is fantastic. I wish they were a little deeper, but they pros outweigh the cons, in my opinion. I have two of the deep ones that I haven't set up yet. I'll definitely be getting more of these. :)

  • @FC360D
    @FC360D 4 роки тому

    I've got 1 of the taller ones which I used for my T.Vagans and then a thinner 1 with that hinged lid which I'm not a fan of as the lid is so easy to open as proven by some red runners managing to escape from the one I have. Might just be the one I have but the lid just doesn't seem to secure correctly. With my taller 1 there's what I can only describe as a clicking noise when you push down on the lid and it feels more secure. Awesome video though :)

    to be honest I don't like the 1L and 3L braplast tubs at all. They are not deep enough for substrate, and the lids crack really easily when trying to add holes. ended up throwing both of mine away, which was kind of a waste of £2. xD the square tub is great though, I use it for some of my juvies and dwarf species but I will always prefer exo terra faunariums even though they are a little pricier :P

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  8 років тому

      The depth thing is definitely a drawback. I don't know why I thought they'd be deeper, but with the large especially, I can't add as much sub as I would like. I usually give all of my slings and juveniles room to burrow if they like, and these only permit a couple inches at most. I have two of the square tubs ready to go; I just have to figure out what to put in them. lol. I use something very similar to the faunariums for some of my juveniles. They're nice little enclosures for the money. :)

      You know, I was wondering what those went for back in Europe. Yup, sounds like the mark up is quite extreme. I'm sure Stamps had to pay quite a bit for shipping to get them in, which accounts for some of it. If these were cheaper, they'd be even better. I might have to see if a UK keeper would be willing to pick some up and ship them to me; it would likely be much cheaper. Thanks!!! - Tom

      I'm REALLY loving that part. I can look right in the top and see everything perfectly. No guessing where the tarantula is. :)

      Most plastic containers you can buy in the stores like WM and Costco are very opaque. Good plastic is more expensive, but it's not like your going thru them and tossing them. They last for years as a critter keeper. That guy was really jonesin' to go exploring. Lol

      I noticed you will have better luck having them shipped one at a time and since it's free shipping don't have to worry about that because the way they ship them when there is many is bad.

      @TomsBigSpiders  6 років тому +1

    Those are Tupperware. Living in these tinny boxes is no kind of life for these animals. They are living things, not trading cards for you to collect.

      Hayden Foxx Tarantulas prefer small enclosures. Large enclosures tend to stress them out.

    • @sindreegenes6526
      @sindreegenes6526 6 років тому

      yes they prefer small places, but not this small. a 10 gallon tank with places to hide and burrow. it's horrible to see all these people using these small boxes. i work in a petstore and we use these containers for people to take them home. they are supposed to be looked at and admired. it's no point of having them like this...

      Sindre egenes, Pet stores don’t know what they’re talking about, a spider of that size does not need a tank that size and actually would prefer a tub the size he is using in the video and tarantulas aren’t really a pet you buy just to admire, you do admire them but not like you would a lizard or fish. Also plastic tubs tend to keep humidity in better.

      That's the 2nd time this pet store worker has said the same thing in these comments, just goes to prove what most people in the hobby already know.... many pet store workers have no idea what they're talking about.
