Well, I'm hooked. Subbed. Definitely not snobs, and that's a good thing. Too many reviewers only talk about the most costly Whiskys. Rachel, I can only understand about every third word you say with my Texas-tuned ear, but I could listen to you two chat all day.
You're not kidding Bill! It gets easier, but you'll learn the proper distillery name pronunciations at the very least. I *almost* live in Texas (Dallas), and I'm sure our English would be just as difficult 🙃
Thanks for this short video. Really enjoyed it. You need to try the different variations of the Black Bottle, too. You should also try the smoky version of Famous Grouse called Black Grouse. Smokier but softer compared to the Black Bottle. Keeping on entertaining us, ladies!! Cheers from Germany
....never had the Grouse..but bought a bottle of Black Bottle a few years ago for 28 dollars canadian (which is dirt cheap for any whisky), and was pleasantly surprised with the complex flavour, the sweetness, and mine was quite smokey.....so I have recommended it to all my friends whenever they say what is a good scotch to start with. Especially for the price. best deal out there.
I have the Famous Grouse Smokey Black, love this blend! Haven't tried the Black Bottle yet, but I do like some Grouse! Famous, Naked, and Smokey Black! Great drams! So good to see my favorite ladies on a Sunday morning, now my week starts off on the right foot! Great video you two!
Never had Black Bottle but the Naked Malt is my favorite budget blend. To me, it’s really flavorful and I love the sherry finish. Black Bottle is pretty pricey here in Florida (US).
I have never tried the Famous Grouse but I rated Black Bottle second best in a Blindtasting with about 20-25 Whiskys and there were much more expensive ones. As you said, it is quite complex for a Blended Whisky.
Black Bottle has always been my blend of choice, since being introduced to it by a helpful landlord (cheers and RIP Brian) when I was 16 😂. Just picked up a bottle for £13 to stock up. The BB Alchemy range is interesting and the 10 is pretty good. Also the Smoky Black is pretty good as well.
Never had the Black Bottle, doesn't appear to be available where I am, but I've made a homemade bottle of scotch cream out of the Famous Grouse. Makes a pretty good one.
I still have the F.G. 18 y.o. dated 1982.(left from my father) I bet it'll beat the hell out of many modern single malts of 12y.o.and even older. I'm sure of that "coz when i opened "The Long John Blended Scotch Whisky' released in 1975-it was absolutely fantastic!
It has definitely changed! The changed the recipe and rebranded in 2013 but they have brought out some new expressions and we heard them might change the recipe back to closer to the pre 2013 version.
The standard BB is still pretty much unpeated but The 10yo BB is the throwback to the old “a taste of all the Islay Malts” packaging, before Diageo made life difficult for getting Lag & PE! The AlchemySeries bottles with the colour on the labels are also worth a dabble! Xx
Black Bottle is hard to find in Michigan. Your video made me wonder what the best selling or most popular scotch is in Scotland. Johnnie Walker still is the dominant Scotch in the USA.
I think Famous Grouse, Bell's and Grant's are top 3 but the order always changes (or you hear different things for different sources!) Teachers and Whyte & MacKay are up near the top too.
Nice ep! In my part of Canada (or in Irish, which I am, Ceanada?) I have access to FG but not BBB. And speaking of Ireland, awkward segue, have you tried any of Waterford's "cutting edge" whisky? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the stuff! I'm a big fan of Redbreast (especially cask strength) but Waterford is an unknown for me.
Interesting, they do indeed sound like mixers, if not budget drams. Most of the blends we've tried have been Compass Box, which can get pricey. The best not-quite-budget, but great value, bottle of theirs we just picked up is a single cask king street artist's blend for just under $50. Considering it's NCA, NCF, and almost 100 proof, I highly recommend. One local spot (oddly enough my barber shop) just acquired some Black Bull, will give it a go next time. Not familiar with Duncan Taylor - are they of any repute to you connoisseurs? I can still find some of the extinct Lonach range, but they're so obscure it's just gambling.
About 30 years ago Black Bottle is when I knew it and liked it. But Wiskies have changed. I might try it again. Famous Grouse allmost all have a recognasible too dominant taste that I really don't like and has kept me away from it ever since.
@@TheGrailTastings I kinda think that infamous grouse is to whisky, what graffiti is to literature. Ooh, what have I said. Doh ! Now I’m barred for life. 😂😂.
Cosy Sunday evening watch - priceless 9 minutes! Thanks for two informative reviews/tastings - You did great!
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the sub! You'll be fluent in no time!😂

No Suprise to me! It had a reason that I never tried the Famous Grouse. 😁 Very kind and brave, that you also tries such a categories of Whisky too.😎🥃🥃
Thank you! 😁

Definitely! Sounds like good advice!

We definitely need to try the Smokey Black Grouse!

Great comparison and I too would choose Black Bottle. Thanks for sharing!

As you probably know, we love a blind tasting!

@2:35 "but in between times". To my American ear, it sounded like a lead into an old Scottish tale or movie about old Scotland.
😁 Aw! Wish it had been!

Ah yeah, that's a good one to use for that kind of thing!
Nice channel! Whenever I'm in Doune, I'll visit your shop. Keep it up! 👍👌Greetings from Germany! 😉
We moved to Callander a couple years ago! Its just 8 miles along the road though! Come see us there!

This sounds awesome!
back in the day of living in scotland black bottle was my blend of choice, tried it again after a few years and it wasn't the same.
It has definitely changed! The changed the recipe and rebranded in 2013 but they have brought out some new expressions and we heard them might change the recipe back to closer to the pre 2013 version.
i hope black bottle do both , as i like the idea of a speyside / islay mix without the peat - taking over the taste ...

Ah thanks David! We haven't tried the new range yet! Interesting!

We have tried a few of the Waterford's but not this one! will keep an eye out!

Ah yes, black bull is a decent one and Duncan Taylor bottle some good stuff!
07:09 Ralfy would be turning in his bothy!
Indeed he would. But I think he'd also realize Rachel was being facetious.
😆
In scotland is the the famous grouse the #1 selling “budget” scotch? If not what is?
I think it is. Although some sources say Bell's and some say Grant's.

Is it just me, or does Jen do an R2D2 impression at 0.45 mins mark? 🤔
Sounded more like Yoda to me!
🤣😆
Infamous grouse?… ooooh please…. Make it stop, make it stop. Ok, I put my hands up, I must be a whisky snob 😂😂
Oh no! Your barred! 😂
