  • 47484 'IKB' has been moved since my last visit to RSS Wishaw however its no better off for its new location in the yard. See the loco languishing in a poor condition alongside 37679 which is looking equally sorry for itself.
    Also onsite is part of unit 508201 which has become an urban artists canvass plus Pacer 143603 which is camouflaging itself into the background.
    Its hard to see how 47484 will make a comeback from here..
    If you're a fan of my videos and you just want to say 'Thanks'.. You can buy me a coffee and support my channel at the following link - www.buymeacoff...
    Hope you enjoy the video - Thanks for watching.

    47 484 is owned by the Pioneer Diesel group they have lots of projects with the amount of diesels they have. It had a new roof donated many years ago and this is only how it looks on the outside which is cosmetic. I'm quite sure it will be restored to full working order once the group has more funding. Like anything in preservation. It's a long haul to get them back up and running again.

      Too many people seem to forget that in preservation, buying the vehicle is the easy/cheap bit. It's the restoration that costs money!

      @@HowardLeVert Hmmm Locomotives are a good few tens if not hundreads of thousands a piece to buy alone...
      Moreso the big mainline engines, though it is possible to get a small diesel shunter for the cost of a new car even the smallest steam engines are expensive.

      At least it hasn’t been heavily vandalised, and it looks complete. It certainly has come to a low point in its life. Let’s hope salvation comes reasonably soon as the high price of scrap metal may start to make destroying it seem attractive.

    To see 47 484 in the condition that it's in is absolute sacrilege ... IKB was seen on a regular basis on the Western Region and one of the first Brushes I spotted when I started spotting back in the mid seventies... When I was in my teens (many years ago), I was hauled by IKB on a mystery tour from Bristol Parkway and ended up at Skegness.... Ahhh, those were the days when British Rail did "secret five" mystery tour's through the summer months.

      Other than having the longest nameplate in diesel history though, what makes 47 484 any more special than any other Brush 4? It does look like the cutter's torch will be along soon.

    I thought it was a shame that the 'POLICE' 47829 wasn't preserved. I passed it at Eastleigh driving a 158 on a Romsey rounder. Also saw the 73 there on another day in the Pullman livery, renamed The Royal Alex at that time. At least that one is preserved.
    I did put a suggestion into Keith Knight at Knights Engineering Eastleigh that they save a couple of Pigs, paint them in Pullman colours, call it The Bournemouth Belle and have a a couple of 73s for off 3rd rail working.
    Like the HST Pullman it would have been a massive hit.

    I saw 47484 at Paddington 40 years ago, light loco looking immaculate. I worked for London Transport on the wonderful Routemasters and had free travel so one of the things I did was to visit the different stations.
    Walking to work one day at Westbourne Park I also saw the APT go past Queens Park on test.

      I disagree. If it wasn't for the pacers, what else would've been carrying passengers? The 1st gen DMUs were on their last legs, and needed replacements. When the HSTs first came out, some people hated them, and even when they were in service for a while, the didn't have much of a following, until they were due for withdrawal, then all of a sudden, enthusiasts started filming them before they went. Like them or not, pacers had a place on the railway, and they are a part of railway history, and I for one am glad some have been preserved

    • @stephendavies6949

      @johnUB4478 Purely as a customer of the railways, the terrible ride & constant screeching from the wheels dissuaded me from taking the train into Cardiff for 20 years. Even when there was an opportunity to replace them, they were inexplicably retained. Frankly, any hertigate railway that uses them will be driving customers away.

      @@johnUB4478 My heart used to sink when a Pacer rolled up for a journey down the Durham Coast line. There was one with a leaky roof, and the hideous screeches as they went round the curves at the High Level Bridge could be heard for miles. But nicely turned out Pacer is perfect for a heritage line that is reasonably straight, has nice views, and needs something that's cheap to run for punters who just want a train ride and probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between City of Truro and KOYLI. And for a train based on a badly designed bus, they have lasted a very long time 😁

    The 143 has a home to go to so hopefully won't be allowed to deteriorate too badly given it arrived there in full working order. Realistically the 37 and 47 are only fit for scrap. There are numerous preserved examples already plus many others in better condition should someone want to preserve another. Similarly there are many 08s and those look largely stripped for spares, scrap realistically for the majority.

      The 508/2 coach is one of 4 remaining in existence. Both 508201 and 209 were based at the fire training facility in Liverpool. They were suffering heavy graffiti and vandalism so 209 was moved inside and 201 has been sold to the 400 series group to be restored and used as a barrier coach to haul 313201!

    Sadly i think that place is Gods waiting Room the train version, i seriously doubt anything there will ever run again, though they seem to put an inordinate amount of effort into saving crumbling rusty Rushton loco's, many sites now have more stock than they can ever realistically restore, and that is such a shame. Even when you go to the successful ?? heritage railways you pass loads of stock sheeted over or rusting away in sidings, NYMR, ELR, GCR all guilty of it that I've noticed in my travels.

  • @GSD-hd1yh
    @GSD-hd1yh 25 днів тому

    A number of the 08s look as if they are just donors to keep one or two others running. Don't forget that Railway preservation only really started in the 1960s when steam was replaced, and where Flying Scotsman cost £8000 to build in 1923 (equivalent to £400,000 in 2024) it cost £4.5 million to repair.
    Most heritage railways were started by enthusiasts with no money, so raising the funds to even keep an engine on the tracks is a huge effort. We should be grateful to them for the work they put in, but you can't blame them for projects sitting untouched due to lack of funding.

    Google 47484 and there’s loads of stuff from 2011 about it being bought by a group and them starting to restore it including paining the yellow ends and getting the marker lights working. Nothing much after that initial flurry so looks like it came to naught as you’d never guess that anything had been done to it.

    What a mess I remember that on the Western Region and Southern had a fairly good trip up from Axminster to Southampton on it. We were waiting in Tisbury loop for a while and there was a photo somebody took in a book with me on it, also the last time seen and had been in 1993 when it ran a train from London Paddington to Plymouth for the area managers tour Cornish Pasty Package for a pair of Class 50s to Penzance and back to Plymouth for IKB back I did it from Exeter only it was gleaming in a fresh coat of paint by Old Oak Common and now look at it, the roof looks like it's going to fall in?
    So who owns it? Why aren't they ashamed of what they haven't done to keep it safe? As a 50 man I shouldn't care, but I have seen and been around 484 for a lot in the past, even pictures of it in blue in the 1970s it always looked good with WR style plates. Save it or scrap it but don't leave it out to die like that!

    I'm much more interested in the two wagons at 6:17 - especially what is to the left of the 'Presflo', which can be seen more clearly at 9:39. The Presflos are a vehicle I remember bringing flyash from the coal-fired power stations to fill in former clay pits around Peterborough. Also, to what did the boiler at 8:38 belong?

    • @tulyar1043
      @tulyar1043 25 днів тому

      That is a cement carrying Presflo and not a Flyash Presflo. It has Vacuum brakes. Flyash Presflos had a longer wheelbase and longer body and were airbraked. Only problem was the brakes were only on one end of an axle, and all brakes were all on the same side of the train, usually forty eight wagons.
