  • Ma gets hit hard by an owl when it goes flying through the nest at lightening speed. Mom almost gets thrown over the nest rails. There is slow motion replay of the impact and views from both cams. Mom was not incubating the egg at the time of the strike but fortunately the egg seems to be ok. Ma has two more eggs to lay over the nest few days. She is delaying incubation to ensure the eggs can hatch close together. Pa came immediately to help. He remained watchful all night and stayed with ma. There is no audio on the side cam. Thanks for watching!

What does the Fort St. Vrain bald eagle site look like? The eagles' nest (FSV-N0) is 9 x 8 feet wide, eight feet high, and 57 feet off the ground. It has a perimeter of about 26 feet, a total area of about 56 feet, and probably weighs between 2200 and 2700 pounds! The nest is located in a cottonwood on the banks of the St. Vrain River near Platteville, CO, on property owned by Xcel Energy. We’re not sure how old it is, but Bob Anderson and Rob MacIntyre put the first cam system up in 2003, when the nest was already well established. FSV-N0 is built primarily of cottonwood branches (the dominant tree in many river systems out west) and lined with prairie grass. After the primary limb supporting the nest fell in August of 2020, RRP Director John Howe worked with Xcel Energy to put up a new bionic limb and restore the nest. The eagles gave it their seal of approval just a few days later.

Amazing the depth of power in the wing of a Eagle.

Thanks for uploading this video @chickiedee64 ... glad I kept watching until the end, where in slow motion I could clearly see the owl. Poor Ma!

Impact at 1:55, the frame rate is too low to really see it. Channel owner please edit footage and/or create chapters; this is way too long.

Thanks for your comment and suggestion. You can FF through the video. The impact shown near the end of the video from the side camera view was better than the top cam view shown at the beginning. That owl was barreling at such a speed, it was a blur in real time. I hope we won't have any more of those videos to show.

Thanks Chickiedee! I wish the owls wouldn’t do that!

Can you give a time in the video where this occurs because I watched it twice and I don’t see it? Great video!

17:41. The owl is flying through the nest at a high rate of speed. It's only a blur. You will see feathers flying, and Ma eagle knocked over. I tried to slow it down, but it didn't help. Sorry about that. I had to watch the footage from both cams over and over, trying to see it. I was watching it live. I heard the vocals of Mom eagle and rolled footage back on the DVR. It took a while for me to find it to.

Even on slow motion i did not see it. that was one fast attack. Is it normal for owls to go after Eagles ?

Oh, yes. Swfl Nest has owl attacks every year. They have knocked the eagles off the tree branches when they are roosting. They are fast and come out of nowhere. Owls are night hunters .
