You may already have tried this. When I got the anti-skid service required it was one of the ABS-rings in the front that had rusted and cracked due to snow and salt. You can see if they are cracked either if you lift the car and look from the inside of where the driveshaft goes into the spindle. You can also remove the wheel and the abs-sensor and look down the hole and spin the axle to see if there any cracks. It can also be the abs-sensor but most of the time its a cracked abs-ring. Cheers from a V70 owner in Sweden
A trick on that beauty cover. Use a 3/8 long extension put the hole end over the tabs and then twist, the flats will push in all 4 tabs, and then you can just lift up.

Another awesome video. I always feel your pain with the constant issues. I look foward to the day it os running 100%. And the volvo community has helped me through issues of my own. Who needs dealers!!!!!!
Everytime i fix one thing another goes wrong. Its almost as if the car is programmed that way!!! If i wasnt in the UK i would love to come and do a ride along with you.
I highly suggest using some DeoxIT D5 spray on the connector/pins when you put it all back together. I tend to use it on a lot of older/dirty electrical connectors and seems to do a better job than regular "contact cleaner" spray. I started using it mainly for old electronics but it's done well on my cars as well.
I have been having an almost identical issue on my 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero. It runs and drives totally fine, but sometimes, it has the ABS, Traction Control, and check engine lights come on while driving. The code comes up as "Lost communication with Steering Column Control Module." I bought the car from an auction so I couldn't speak directly with the previous owner, but because I know someone that works at the local Saab dealer, I was able to find out that they had spent $3,000 replacing the Steering Column Control Module (Known as a CIM "Column Integration Module" on Saabs) along with the ignition, both keys, and battery in attempt to fix this exact issue. After doing some more digging with a Tech2 computer lots of forum research I also landed on the ABS Module being the culprit with my car. Faults in the ABS/Brake Module can cause interruptions in the Can-BUS System and bring down other modules as well. When the brake module in my Saab acts up, it takes down the CIM and ECM as well, which triggers the code I get. Its so strange how one module can effect so many others...I had a 2013 Chevy Impala that did the exact same thing as well.
It’s crazy how one thing can point to so many other directions and then end up being a totally different thing than you started to hunt for in the first place. Aren’t cars fun?
@@ElliottAlvis The most fun! Haha. I also forgot to mention that when mine acts up, because it takes the ECM down with it, it won’t start. It stays running, but if you shut it off it won’t start. I have to let it sit for at least a few hours to let everything kind of reset itself before it will run again.
Congrats on the sponsorship, and congrats to your assistant, she's clearly quite familiar with battery powered cars (kids are so spoiled these days with lithium rc cars, charging in half an hour and running for way longer than the cruddy nicad ones back in the day, it's wonderful) and automotive HVAC

Yep - I remember my son sitting on my lap in my 89 Beretta - playing with the turn signal/high beam switch. One pull later and I was out about $300 for the fix. Good times.
Lol the intro is so true. I am into my 7th centre support bearing - 3rd rear axle, 2nd driveshaft, back to the 1st gearbox because the 2nd one leaks oil, and onto my 3rd pair of shocks xD (don't buy cheap, i learned that the hard way)
Hopefully this saves a ton of money.. as they are the only company offering these service besides volvo the prices are crazy... but you want to keep your volvo on the road the service is vital. I have on 01 base s60 that is in need of the ETM repair and I would usually just have xemodex repair it but my funds are very limited so I'm going to order the digital repair parts and do it myself... Not the first volvo electronic part I have repaired as I had a 95 850 t5 with a bad abs module that I resoldered and put back together with no further issue. I repaired Same/similar module on my 1997 s70 myself. Cold joints on it are very common. ~2h of work. 1h to cut Open the case to access the circuit board. Did it 1,5 years Ago. Have not had problem with it since
Every V70R video I watch makes me happy…that mine finally died. Don’t get me wrong, it was a good car, saved my life, as well as my wife’s life, after getting hit by two pickup trucks. But as much as you can chase after the electrical gremlins that will continue to happen, you’ll then start to see mechanical issues, especially those related to the transmission and angle gear. Given you’re willing to keep trying, the other thing I would suggest doing, is to add hood venting. I can’t remember who offered some vent grills for the hood, but they’re worth it given just how hot the engine bay gets, which could actually help minimize under hood wiring issues. And since your hood has a few minor cosmetic issues, adding in vents will only help visually.
I know this sounds stupid but before you sent the module off, did you try to clean the contacts off and retry the module, with that car having such a water problem is very plausible that a connector could have been corroded.
Oh wow...your assistant is as "enthused" about the Volvo as mine was about my '78 Continental...back in 2000 😛. Oh, and so little has changed...my '96 855T5 had an earlier version of that BCM (aka ABS module) and they failed back then as much as now. Same hard-to-find four bolts on an E5 socket...it wasn't available at common stores in 2008. That module you pulled looked exactly the same as the one off of my '96 😮
Must be something just with the R. My ABS/Anti-skid message came on like a month ago(07 XC70 Cross Country), and I took it up to the shop just to have the tires changed for winter, and an alignment check. Message is gone. ABS light is still on, but I still need to do the brakes, and probably swap the ABS sensors(car was beat to hell when we got it. My brother and I are convinced they hadn't ever done a tune-up on it, at 200k miles). With any luck, after that the ABS light will go away.
Another great video from a fellow V70R owner, glad they made the engine look pretty for how often I get to look at it!. A quick tip I learned from some of the veteran P2R owners is when removing that plastic "beauty cover" next to the airbox use a 10mm socket to press down on the tabs from the top and apply some pressure while pulling the cover up and they come right off! Looking forward to the next video in the series.
Lot of useful information in this video, but for everyone out there, please remove the air filter box, it will make things easier. Many times the connector doesn't want to come off, and you need two hands for detaching it.
Do you mind giving us some prius content, like buying another prius to do racing, like a drag build with the stock hybrid engine but less weight and make it the fastest prius with the stock hybrid system in the world. Then Maybe try to make it even faster by moding the engine for more power while still keeping it Hybrid .I know what i Said here is a lot of work but it is very interesting content
Did you try just putting some dielectric grease on the connectors of the BCM? I have an 05 S60 and a couple of months ago the anti-skid and other warnings pop up. I told my Volvo mechanic at the dealer and he said to first try putting some dielectric grease he gave me on the connectors because sometimes before they fail the connection just goes bad. I put some on and the warnings and lights never came back on.
@@ElliottAlvis Mine looked good too but I had my anti-skid popping up here and there. My Volvo mechanic said up to the 05 the BCM's were not made the best and told me to try the grease before I sent it in to get repaired so I didn't waste a ton of money. Hasn't come on since the summer. You never know since yours was sitting for so long.
I have an assistant about the same age. She saw me working on my S6 and decided to help. Used a wire brush on one fender and a bolt on a door and 1/4.🤦♂️
@@ElliottAlvis Yeah. She so sweet I couldn't be too mad. I think I can buff most of it out. I caught the wire brush almost immediately. The bolt thing I did not. Also she and my next older boy left a jackstand close enough for me to whack with the dorr going to work the next morning. Good thing it's my DD beater wagon.
I'm optimistic! I think this is the thing that'll get this car to reliably work through the winter! But, I think you should burn some sage over the engine bay and in the interior to exorcise whatever computer module demons seem to be living in this thing. I don't think your assistant's 'Froggy' can be trusted...
If EuroAsianBob wanted to set you up with a vehicle to give you near endless content, he hit a homerun with this one. Better that than it sitting in his back lot for even more years.
I had a yaw sensor issue on my V70R. I sent the BCM for repair including the brake module. This was not the problem. Volvo shop solved the issue by rewiring the sensor that is below the passenger seat. It took 2 years to solve the issue.
The trim you are removing in the start "the plasty thing" where you use pliers. The meaning is to use 10mm (or equivalent in inch) and push down over all 3 tabs and pull up.
Just a quick question, did you reset your codes after the calibration? Although it shouldn't be needed it is wise. I had the wrong type of bcm on my s80, someone had replaced it with a STC type not the DTSC type which is what I think you have on the R. As soon as I put the right second hand module on error went away (no coding needed). Vida has pics that lead to calibration/tests etc everywhere so always worth a click. With the steering angle calibration you only need to rotate the wheel 15 degrees one way and calibrate, but leave it at the 15 degrees while you calibrate. The instructions are further down the info page.
Elliot the T-Shirt is almost on point except someone has tried to hide the picture of your Volvo with a cat. Good luck and thanks. Be well and stay safe. UK.
Did you know that you can turn off your daytime running lights with vida you go into Vehicle communications and you go to programmed values and you look for daytime running lights and you set it to standard then when you turn the headlight switch to off it will turn the headlights off I hope this helps

That’s a good tip! I’ll try that next time. Thanks Ben!
what a cute little assistant will she also return with the repaired bcm/abs module
Let’s hope! She’s a good helper.
Great assistant. Start investing in that shotgun. You will need it sooner than you think.
Yeah, I’m cherishing this age. Not looking forward for when I need that 😂
Lot of useful information in this video, but for everyone out there, please remove the air filter box, it will make things easier. Many times the connector doesn't want to come off, and you need two hands for detaching it.
What a deal. lol Fix it fix fix it....Who knew....Thanks Elliott & Uncle...!
Thanks Steve!
I actually was going to do just that with a Prius C one day! I’d love to do a track build but retain the hybrid system.
That’s an interesting idea. The connector and pins looked pretty good. But I probably should’ve given that a try!
Used a wire brush on one fender and a bolt on a door and 1/4.🤦♂️
Oh noooo! I’ll need to keep a close eye on my assistant so that doesn’t happen.
Haha I think that’s a good suggestion! Maybe I should take the frog out and see if that helps matters.
I replaced my yaw sensor with a brand new one! I am hoping that isn’t the issue. But it very well could be!
@@ElliottAlvis I did also but it was not the problem.
The trim you are removing in the start "the plasty thing" where you use pliers. The meaning is to use 10mm (or equivalent in inch) and push down over all 3 tabs and pull up.
Ah, noted for next time!
Sorry Elliot, your assistant is the star of this video!
Don't get Jacob upset you're using his car as a desk, he's a huge help on the interior so upsetting him is a bad idea! No scratches on the FreeMW!
Oh true! I don’t want to mess Jacob’s car up any more than it already is! 😂
Your 'Assistant' earned you a thumbs up... better take her out for some ice cream!
I enjoy the Spaceball and can’t wait until it runs! Did I count three cat T-Shirt wardrobe changes?
I did clear the codes after the calibration. But I didn’t realize the wheel needed to be held in the 15 degree position. Thanks for the tip Ben!
11:04 while I was watching this video a yellow sac spider wanted to bite me on my neck lol.
Uncle is tough!! He thought “‘tis but a scratch”
Sorry popping in late on this. Put a small stack of newspaper (5 or 6 sheets) under each wheel. Then turning is MUCH easier.
That’s a great suggestion for next time Paul. Thanks!
My 04 xc90 had the same error. Changed the inner and outer tie rods and the error went away
Really? That’s a solution I haven’t heard yet.
Its a beautiful car, are you having the hood painted when you're done
Elliot the T-Shirt is almost on point except someone has tried to hide the picture of your Volvo with a cat. Good luck and thanks. Be well and stay safe. UK.
Did you know that you can turn off your daytime running lights with vida you go into Vehicle communications and you go to programmed values and you look for daytime running lights and you set it to standard then when you turn the headlight switch to off it will turn the headlights off I hope this helps
That’s a setting I didn’t know about. Thanks Joe!
I worked on my 2002 Volvo v70 2.4 non turbo but it's apparently in every p2 Volvo I forgot to mention the setting is in the CEM witch is the computer you had rebuilt Take care
Can’t wait to see that handsome car on the road, showing all those stupid SUVs and Crossovers how a stylish practical quality car should look.
Good video Elliot…
Thank you!
hello team! good videos. .my 2007 volvo s40 have its BCM failed. is it better to send it for a rebuild or to get new one? I don't want to pay a lot of money on it..
As of tomorrow, my V70 is no more! I've bought a Gen 1 2002 Lexus RX300 with 92,000 miles to replace it. Hopefully the stereo is better than the HU-850!
Best of luck! I’m sure the Lexus will have fewer issues lol
@@ElliottAlvis That didn't last long.... been in the garage 2 days now, A/C pump seized solid, throwing the belt off!
wow cuteness overload....
She’s a doll
I've almost got the engine out of mine. Down to the fuel lines, a few connectors, then the subframe. Then it's time to make a decision on what I do.
That’s a lot of work!
@@ElliottAlvis It is, but I have no choice. I think my TCV let the engine overboost. Cracked #2 between the cylinders. The only saving grace is that I have a shop and lift.
