5 THINGS to know about CO2 air guns

- Many air guns are powered by CO2, or carbon dioxide gas - even though they're still called 'airguns'! From refilling to using special maintenance capsules, understanding how temperature and firing style can alter their power, airgun shooter Nigel Allen looks at five things that every airgunner should know about this inert gas as a pellet gun's power source. Oh... and watch out for frostbite...!!!
Instead of maintenance cartridges, simply put 1-3 drops of something like Crosman Pellgunoil on the tip of each new cartridge, when punctured, the oil will be sprayed throughout the inside of the gun and lubing the seals with every new cartridge.
I add 3 n 1 oil directly to the valve when changing out the cylinders
Crosman Pellgunoil is nothing more than Marvel Mystery Oil. You can buy 16oz. for the price of a 1/4oz tube of pellgunoil.
@@stevewest7260 Hmmm yea it probably is...a tube of pellgunoil is like $3-4 US so it's really up to you lol
use siliconoil its designed for valves and rubber
@@shadowmage135 Not a good idea..3 in 1 will destroy the seals.... any kind of pure silicone oil won't.
I bought a 12 shot rifle for less than $100 online. I love it and find it shoots 36 shots off from each small tank. Light weight but very precise. Just one of my beginning collection. Great video
Very informative. Backs up what I have been told.
Good video.
Thanks I'm new to this and that was an excellent and straightforward video. Thanks for sharing.
This video has wrong information.
The main one that's complete rubbish is when he talks about venting. Never do that.
You need to leave the gun with gas in it at all times. This is to keep Preassure in it making sure all the orings are expanded and filling the gaps they are designed for. Not doing this will mean they dry out and leak
@@PsyMongSki or something called use the proper lubricant oil for the seal so it does not dry out
Good video! I don't criticize others for their choice of air or gas. I would disagree with some of the negative comments on the use of CO2. I have a number of pellet guns, both gas and air, pumpers and pcp. My favorite every day gun is a crosman 2260. With a few inexpensive mods I can consistently get fps in the 600 to 625 range. Sure it costs a little more but to me it's worth it. Happy trails!
"You'll need to vent off" - Awful advice.
Removing the pressure on the seal causes it to expand. Allowing CO2 to vent causes a dramatic chilling effect leading to rapid contraction.
Mechanically allowing the seal to expand while also causing it to contract by reducing its temperature by a good 40 degrees is what lead CO2 guns to leak by warping them. Keep them gassed, even for months and you will do less harm.
If you shoot till empty then remove the Co2 and give the seal a break, if you have gas left then save it and keep it in its sealed state. Releasing the gas over the seal is the worst thing you can do.
So so so glad someone said this buddy. This guy is a complete idiot.
When I moved got my first air rifle . I used to store it empty and it would 99.99% of the time leak and I would looser a full 88g co2.
Watch some of this guys other vids and enjoy the backwards information
Thanks for the correct information 👍
Good advice Shoot McRunfast. I like it, and it seems common sense.
One question for ya'.
What co2 air rifle would you recommend for around 100.00????
@@ZenithClarity the webley vmx co2 pistol is a really good one
Thank Christ somebody saved us from this nutjob!!! I almost RUINED my BRAND NEW airgun because of these false claims. It's a little leaky now, fkn nutjobs are everywhere!!
The substance in the cylinder is liquid CO2 (not gas). This will exert a constant vapour pressure on any given day. It is temperature dependent but about 830psig at 20°C, nominal 850psig on a hot day (40atm at 6°C to 60atm at 22°C, data derived from NIST). This does mean that a CO2 airgun is self-regulating unlike most PCP. And why rapid shooting will drop the pressure, the liquid needs a couple of seconds to evolve more gas (to absorb some more heat), and why the pressure will (or should) remain more or less constant until the cylinder is exhausted.
Aside - these CO2 airguns are made with good components but assembled quite cheaply, they're not always gas tight from new. That can be sorted and they do like being well maintained.
Good basic info.
In temperatures over 60f, with a few of my CO2 pistols, I can achieve around 90-100 full-power shots, but the average is around 50-60. I have total 22 air guns.
I have never seen a C02 capsule that cold. Also, if your fingers get stuck to it, just wait a couple minutes or go inside and run it under some water
agreed
I never understood the temperature thing.
The capsule might be a bit more powerful for the first shot on a hot day, but as soon as you start venting gas by firing the capsule is freezing cold regardless of the outside temperature.
Allowing compressed gas to expand is basically how a refrigerator works.
I actually miss this channel. And no frostbite yet encountered
Personally instead of using a lubricating capsule, I prefer to add a good drop of 3-in-1 multi purpose oil on top of a standard capsule, prior to shoot. Does the same job... Keeps the gun properly lubricated each time I shoot and I can use the same oil to lubricate all other moving bits and joints in the gun.
Anyway... Nice video. =)
Excellent tip there, Hammer Head. Thanks for sharing. One thing I would say, however, is that 3-in-1 shouldn't be used on springers or PCPs; it's too volatile and doesn't work well on high-load areas, either. ATB, Nige
Interesting... I hadn't thought about PCPs as I don't have one myself but that's good now for the day I may buy one. Thanks Nigel.
DON'T USE 3 in 1 you'll wreck the seals just use silicone oil
I use regular petroleum jelly and have been for 6 years, (not saying its better or anything) should I worry about my seals? My 850 airmagnum has performed well for all 3000+ shots so far.
Also, I have never drained a co2 after shooting as I usually shoot 2-8 shots at a time and have gone 8 months on a single co2 cartridge with no leakage. What is the reason for draining the gas? Just safety?
i use silicone oil a drop on the end of the cartridge every time i load it
Big positives are the low recoil compared to a springer and the ease of carrying a few 12g capsules in your pocket compared to a PCP pump or SCUBA tank when hiking about.
I love Walther. Where did you find those lube co2s? Definitely want the ppks running like a champ
1:41 used them before they are useless, just apply a drop of silicone oil on the top of the capsule before you load it, 2:02 850psi actually,
I don't find them useless... and they use a different oil than 'silicone'. You're not wrong, the CO2 pressure varies from 800-900 dependent on a no. of conditions.
@@AirgunTV yes it is temperature dependent. The numbers were done back in the 20 and 30s by NIST (USA standards labs) and recorded in some very obsolete units. Essentially 40atm at 5.9°C and 60atm at 22.4°C (or 590psi to 880psi). For shooting reckon on 830-850 nominal. It doesn't really matter, you'll have much the same pressure the whole day. And because of the way the valve works against the pressure in the valve body, when there is less pressure it releases more gas, so the gas release remains fairly constant. If you tune the gun for more power as many do, that self-regulation can go all to pot.
Part of it is gun design e.g. a long barrelled 10m target pistol can utilise more of the gas, they aim for 440-500fps with a 177 but with some constant pressure set, a short barrelled replica maybe 340fps, a 22 is always slower, but heavier. The longer the barrel, a rifle, the greater volume for expansion driving the pellet. The vapour pressure of liquid CO2 does limit the pressure that can be put behind the pellet, but then there is rate of release through the valve and ports. The is a balance to performance to optimise accuracy vs power.
@Nigel. It's good to see you back again with another informative video. This one is nice for individuals new to air gunning. Some people, as we know, new to the sport are somewhat uncertain as to the difference between Co2, PCP and springers. Safe shooting.
Thanks LP. Oddly, I put this CO2 'information' piece together after talking with a number of long-standing airgunners who (amazingly) seemed to know very little about CO2 airguns. Indeed, most of them had misconceptions and misgivings... so hopefully this will help newcomers as well as established airgunners. ATB, Nige
@@AirgunTV .. Can you guys ever make something that doesnt require hundreds of dollars in extra-features just to make a weapon work? Geez you have to buy bullets for this gun.. Gas.. Cleaning-gas.. Its such a hassle. -_-
i really like the gun you are using in the video....what is the make and model sir? and where could i purchase it. thank you and have a nice day
sunnyfreedomfighter i don’t know what the rifle is but the pistol is a dan Wesson replica air pistol... just put that into amazon or google if you don’t live in the states
They actually made 12 gram co2 cartridges that can be refilled but there hell expensive like 70$ per cartridge
Tf
as a noob with an Uzi, this is extremely helpful as it warns about things not to do and its correct alternative.
The vapour pressure of CO² in a 12g and 80g will be the same, so no increase in velocity for 80g.
ok cool, thanks.
So where do I get those green cartridge gaskets shown? (my WG airsoft mag is leaking)
in winter i put a handwarmer inside the co2 compartment of my hammerli 850. i wind a handwarmer with tape around the co2 barrel of my crosmans 2240 and dito with the cp1. costs about 20pence. by the way i live in poland.
Crosman Powerlets have added SC silicone lubricant to help preserve your airguns seals just buy those instead ......
+11.11 Good intel, thanks
I have the Walther cowboy movie rifle replica (been so long since I had it out I can't remember its name!) &, well, its nice to look at, & fun to use IIO (my late father bought it) but I wouldn't dare use it for, well, anything really, neither target or pest would shiver at the sight of that barrel, pure fun gun. my point is, if you have the (not inconsiderable) funds for a fun gun, nock youselves out! Just glad I never paid for it!
+1066wastrel It's probably the Colt underlever... and yes, you're right: having a blast with your airgun is what it's all about...
And… C02 is good for vascular plant’s photosyntheses. 👍👍
Not all co2 airguns are built the same. I have a crosman bb1911 and I'm getting around 80 shots and it was around the last 5 that where around the mid 350s fps and the highest was 425 fps. all you have to do is let the co2 warm back up after about 5 back to back shots
+Aj Cole Indeed. Actually, I have tested the occasional one where I've got circa 100 usable shots from a 12g CO2 capsule
There can be huge differences between CO2 airguns. My HK non-blowback USP gives up to 170 shots from one capsule. Shot many capsules with that shotcount. The blowback USP though only shoots approx 60+ BBs with one capsule..
@@brorjordas1979 yeah that blowback action is a huge waste of CO2 imo.
Hi I just purchased the Gamo p25 CO2 pistol. Is it recommended that I clean the barrel before shooting any pellets? With PCP rifles they always recommend cleaning a new Barrel of any kind of preservation oils that they use.
Great video as always Nigel 👍👌
+Jon-Paul JP Lamoureux Thanks JP
You mentioned hpa mods using regulators, so yes a CO2 gun can use other sources, which make that CO2 gun useful when temps drop in the fall and winter
Thank for the vid guys.....im getting my first airsoft pistol today
Thanks for the info and tips mate
Great Video thank you! I have subscribed your Channel. Of course i like PCP and springers more. Wish you all the best!
AirGhandi
Many thanks, good video
Is there any other kind of oil you can run through your bowels to keep them lubricated
How do they produce CO2 cylinders for air guns?
Thanks. Short and good.
So in my 40C tropical country a c02 pistol will be more powerful?
Potentially, yes
Is it O.K to use the CO2 bottles used in paintball guns
Does leaving a full Co2 Cylinder in a gun cause harm to the gun?
Because my Dan Wesson bb is not working after putting a new Co2 Cylinder,
Can u please tell me what should I do so that it will work properly like it use to work at the start
It shouldn't. You'll need to have a gunsmith check it out; I think the seals have probably gone...
Why does all the CO 2 gas leak out when I put it at my pistol
What are refillable cartridge are for
Can you recommend where I can send my Daisy Powerline 92 for repair? (Leaking CO2)
Empty cO2 bottles make great file handles
can you let me know the decibels of my S&W 2.5inch airsoft?
Will adding a moderator have a similar result as a long barrel. Would it increase the pressure (obviously not as much as a long barrel) but a little bit?
It didn't for me, Harry. Same fps as before the TKO moderator on my Crosman 2240.
Can u do one of these on springers
Hello, any advice on heating a crosman mark 1 to remove its valve? thanks.
Very helpful video but i got a question. I generally heat the CO2 cartridge a lil bit in some amount of hot water before shooting. Is it harmful for the gun or not?
The capsule could explode. a guy here on UA-cam tried that, capsule exploded in his hand and he had to go to the hospital.
@@James-ke5sx....Omg....So far nothin happened bad to me but alright then i quit it...:)
No, but it's a waste of time. A Co2 cartridge is self regulating, and you'll accomplish nothing more than slightly increasing your first shot, after than, it's all going to be the same
excellent very helpfull for C02 users, thanks
Thanks mastermighty. Appreciate your support... ATB, Nige
Joe do you stop co leaks
Just bought my first co2 rife, a Crossman 2250xl rat catcher. I love it but have the bug and want to tune without ruining it, anybody got any advice and information on places to buy the best tuning kits and maybe it cosmetics ie camo stock and grip.
Thanks
If you don't have any maint capsules can you put a bit of airgun oil on the pickup before installing a regular cartridge?
Yes
Can you use a bike co2 on a pistol I've got a Walther ppk?
Good vid. So when I vent off i have to leave can in gun a few minutes?
no he's full of bs you won't get frostbite. and don't vent off. waste the co2 through shooting, if you take it out when its half full, the cold temp will make the co2 seals contract very rapidly and thats worse than leaving co2 in your gun for even a few months. If you absolutly can't waste co2 through shooting, LEAVE IT IN! it'll do less harm than letting all the pressure out. also, sorry bout the late response
@@nate6889 blimey. Im worried now because thats wat i did
on CO2, put a drop of "pellgun" oil on top of the cartridge, but the cheaper alternative is 30W non-detergent motor oil, 1/4 gallon for the price of a 1/4 ounce, same shit, just need a dispenser bottle. initially i bought the "pellgun" oil, and after research bought a quart of 30W motor oil, i'm "set for life" for $3!
I’ve designed and manufactured components and assemblies for may years using O-rings of different materials and in different sealing configurations. Some O-ring materials swell and soften and some disintegrate when exposed to mineral oils, so unless the gun manufacturer says its safe to use mineral oil because they’ve used a suitable seal material, do NOT use mineral oils such as engine oil or 3-in-1.
Silicone oil, petroleum jelly and medicinal liquid paraffin (medicinal to distinguish it from paraffin lamp oil) are all suitable because they’re inert chemically so won’t attack the O-rings.
NO petroleum based oils.. NO NO!
will the 88g capsule work with colt revolver? 645fps is very tempting...
no, only 12g in pistols
There is now refillable 12 gram capsules , how time advances cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
Can we use c02 airgun For Hunting small game like rabbit pigeon ?
+HAIFA 94 Yes... But its susceptibility to ambient temperature change can cause problems; you'd certainly need to check your zero before every hunting session
AirgunTV Ouh, Thank you
hell yes as long as its accurate and holy shit you posted this a year ago now i feel like an idiot. good day sir.
thank you for the informitive vid
very useful indeed
Could you please reply, which Co2 revolvers internal parts are more close to the real revolver.?
Non. They all work essentially the same way.
just too clarify , when you run the cleaning/lubricating capsule in the pistol , can it still fire BB's / pellets with it? .. thinking of getting a pistol , prolly look at the shooting show in Stoneleigh next month ..
Hi Mark. Yes, you can. The maintenance capsules are effectively CO2 gas but with a little additive to keep the seals lubed. The only difference you'll see is that you may find a bit more oil comes out of the muzzle, and the action feels a little 'oilier' - especially if you've let the gun get too dry before. Enjoy the British Shooting Show at Stoneleigh - you're sure to pick up a great deal there. ATB, Nige
Awesome info thanks 🤗👍😀
When these vent off is it dangerous to breath in?
If you do it directly im pretty sure, if u do it from a distance u should be fine
Can you remove the c02 cartridge if you are not done shooting all of it?
+ismael Arzaga No - you'll lose all the gas
You CAN... it will simply vent any remaining gas out
Can u explain why it isn’t good to store the gun with a used co2!??
The constant pressure on the seals for months at a time isn't good for them.
The number of shots are depends by the temperature?
Only if you're in an extremely cold environment.
What type of oil would anyone strongly recommend for co2 capsules if not the maintainence capsules?
Stuart Macher Silcone oil
is co2 need for semi auto pistol s?
Very Nice Informative Air Gun Tips! I just couldn't keep my eyes off your beautiful Dan Wesson Pistol! First Time I'd heard of of it. It ain't no Hickok Gun for the masses. I bet Alan Ladd's #Shane would play with this multi-shot Wesson next to his pal Joey!
1:49 Actually you can refill them and theirs people doing it online
Instead of throwing metal away
Why dont we make these devices REUSABLE, REPAIRABLE, REFILLABLE
pcp or a springer then.
Isn't it great that we have so many power choices, though....
I hve just bought a springer.... too noisy.
saving now for a pcp.
I cant see how co2 will work for me.
both, a pcp is like a wife it takes more care but is very satisfying, a springer or gas ram is a slut you can pick up anytime no hassle for a quick bang
Dave Farmer pcp is far better. Co2 is for fun guns and equally noisy.
the quietest pcp i have is an air arms 410 tdr. if i could only keep one of my many air rifles thats the one i'd keep.
monstersince, Is the SMK PCP any good at £190. I 've been offered one..... it needs a silencer and scope, so it'll end up 350 ish.
The Air Arms word up + notes thanks for sharing.
That intro...That damn intro...
are spring bb guns better?
I heat the barrel of my QB78 to 100 degrees F. It completely turns liquid co2 to gas and increases speed of pellet to over 700 FPS in .22. Need a battery powered thermostatically controlled barrel and can rival air powered guns. Don't heat capsule, you making a bomb, heat the barrel.
+James walker Hmmmmmm.... DANGEROUS!
Heating the barrel isn't going to do fuck all for the pressure that is developed out of the Co2 valve. Nothing at all...
So your saying that you cant use compressed air or bike pump to refill a co2 cartridge?????
+lance You cannot.
AirgunTV ty for the ans I think I will buy a aeg or spring rifle
I never degas my co2 I just shoot till it empties out completely and than remove it sometimes i have it in weeks or even months
Is it really really bad to keep half filled canisters in your gun?
+Something More Not really bad, but advisable to remove when storing the gun for long periods between shooting it
Only if you forget about them! I wouldn't recommend it as I left one in for about 6 months or more, and when I went to use it, the CO2 had stuck to a seal at the end, which I pulled out, and I had to take it back to the shop to get fixed.
There was no way I could've fixed it myself, but the shop did a good job and it didn't cost a lot. I thought I might have to get another 2240.
How long can you store unused Co2 cartridges
As long as you want to

Does leaving a partially full co2 cylinder in a gun cause harm to the gun?
+WhyllieCoyote No, not really...
it can damage the seals, because the gas is cold, it can dry out the seals
WhyllieCoyote yes it can leaks out and etc
@@colinshard8665 It is NOT "cold" if pressure isn't being drawn off of it. It ONLY gets cold when you are using it

Crosman Bulk fill 1950-1955 guns are the best c02 guns
Have you done a video about costs? The newer guns seem to go though co2 a lot faster and you only get about 3 to 4 magazines per 2 co2 cartridges. You can easily go through a 50 pack of co2 in a day or 2. Seems like co2 would start to add up fast.
If you are using a blowback or automatic they do go through a lot of co2
something I do is when the power drops I dry fire the caps until its empty
+clarky That will only work with capsules that have some lubricating additive, Clarky- not all do
One thing that annoys me is I have many airpistols and airguns...however I have trapped rats at a sub 5m range and my CP88 with h point pellets cleanly killed many rats not all were head shots, I find a spine or heart and lung shot work as well yet many people turn down an air pistol for hunting. I have a fully tuned HW45 and It stacks pellets at 10 yards
+clarky As long as ranges are kept sensible, Clarky, then a 4+ ft/lb pistol like the HW45 will suffice... as long as it's in the hands of a capable and responsible shooter... Not sure a CO2 pistol - around 2+ft/lb - is powerful enough though. The RatCatcher, of course, is an 8+ ft/lb 'pistol' with a shoulder stock
AirgunTV my cp88 at sub 5 yards and plenty of practice did the job
+clarky Well, I still think it's a big ask, at 2 ft/lb (personally)
good stuff, cheers.
guys i really need help! do i absolutely NEED C02 to be in my gun for it to shoot? if i dont need it, how many shots will it shoot when there is NO C02? thanks guys it really helps because i am getting the Crosman Vigilante .177. please help!
