- This chambered wooden surfboard is hands down my favorite project I've ever built! We used construction grade lumber for this build to keep the cost down and it worked really well. Super excited to get some more surf sessions in and I will definitely keep you updated over on Instagram with future sessions! One question: What was the final weight? Also, after a lifetime of surfing and boat building experiences; sealing the inside of wood structures is as important as the outside finish. And a satin finish is faster than gloss. When water beads up on a surface, it's "sticky". You want it to sheet/run off cleanly. Aloha y'all.
Great job. A few things that would make it better might be more attention to shaping the rails and adding a light fiberglass to prevent your panel from delaminating. Look up some videos on glass lay ups, not too hard.

You can build a wooden surfboard without fiberglass. I've built a windsurfboard without fiberglass and i didn't even use epoxy, but PU varnish. It works, but it's a bit soft.
So with the epoxy he shouldn't have the problem with the softness of the wooden surface. It should work just fine, if wood on the deck is think enough.
PS: And of course if you're making the board to make a less enviromentally problematic surfboard, then you wouldn't want to use fiberglass. Why go through all of that trouble of using wood just to then put fiberglass on it anyway? To me that didn't make any sense.
This is awesome! I don't have the space/room to do this. An idea if you want it...a hole saw might be useful so you wouldn't have as much work with the jigsaw.
Looks great but you need to put a fiberglass cloth to hold the resin. The board will flex, expand and contract with use eventually cracking the expoxy.

Great job guys. For a first time on a surfboard, it's very impressive.
I mentioned before that I got contracted to rebuild the woodwork for a 1931 Chevy Woody Wagon. I settled on TotalBoat Halcyon for the finish. I am overall very happy with the finish. It has a slight orange peel to it. Kinda what you were seeing with the epoxy. It doesn't level out as dead flat as a General Finishes Clear Poly, but it's still flat enough that the client is very happy with the result. And a minor amount of orange peel in trade for all the benefits, it's a no brainier. I'm definitely willing to use their products again... And I don't say that about many products lol.
Again, great job on the surfboard. I've never seen one made before.
Hi mate! Awesome looking board... if you ever choose to make another green light surf have ‘rail bands’ for different rail shapes, which really help make everything symmetrical. Always wanted to make a wooden board myself - good work!

Stretch wrap can be used to hold the two halves together while the glue sets.
Beautiful, just a thought. Could have been nice also to burn the wood a little bit then sand it to give the wood a more defined look
I tied this about 15 years ago but abandoned it when I realised the board would be too heavy to be anything other than a wall hanger. Basically you need to be using Paulownia or Balsa to get something light enough to be of much practical use as a surfboard. 7.5 pounds is the maximum weight including fins. Nice looking board though.

Looks amazing! I've found that using ratchet straps for odd glue ups work great!
We tried that and the ratchet was digging in the wood and it was just slipping off. Tried to put clamps in front, clamps fell. It’s all good now though!

Yes....killer project. More appropriate should be "suicide project". Cannot be epoxy and wood without one or two fiberglass 160 gr/m2 cloth laminated with the resin. You guys got very poor ideas of composites....have you?
I was wondering how in the world you got it to 14 lbs…no fiberglass! The board is a really cool decoration.

A glass schedule was needed on this board. A good one could've be 6+4 oz or 4+4 oz. to make it lighter since it's wood. A single 6 oz. on bottom. It would have been structurally better with such. This is more of a wall hanger. Eventually the epoxy will weakened and water will log in it. Unless you haven't done at least 3 coats on each sides and it still can penetrate in through microscopical holes. Do not use foam sponges. When the epoxy resin warms up it tends to melt the foam and particles fall on the hotcoat. Best ones are the cheap 3" China made brushes. The board is nice though. Rip it up!

Wow, y'all this is the most impressive thing we've had the pleasure of watching you build yet! You truly have no limits! You both are so creative and talented. I almost feel guilty getting to see the final results in less than an hour from the comfort of my couch. This clearly demanded a TON of time and effort. Good on you! I'll probably never build one myself, but will be ordering plans anyway, just to learn more about the process. Fascinating stuff!

Look great ! why no glass cloth ? I ask because the glass cloth is transplant .
I wanted to avoid using glass because it’s a nasty process so I made the wall thickness thick enough to not need it👍🏻
how did you do it with getting the air out of the board when the board is becoming hot? otherwise the board is going to explode
Just a quick tip glue up from the centre and work your way out that way you get a good clamp up without notching the board
I had to start on the end because a bow developed somewhere along the way and the nose had a gap open up. By clamping it first I didn’t have to apply much pressure there at the end. When I clamped the rest of the board the nose just got tighter if that makes sense.
Oh wait I see what you mean now! Yes looking back that seems like a better way!
Yep I always bow the strips out from the centre to ensure the nose and tail are tight which is a big help when shaping. If your interested check out my UA-cam channel and instgram

Hey mate, do you really believe that only liquid epoxy is enough on wood core without any fiberglass skin? I think you only built one wooden board which will probably be very nice to see and to hook on a wall, but either last for a very short time not for the structure but for the water going in to the wood soon....and when wood keeps water.....is not easy to fix then. The epoxy is the water proof part of fiberglass and epoxy.

Amazing job! Whats the main difference you felt on paddle and ride for the woody compared to foam?
With the alignment, did you consider a couple of alignment dowels? If so, I'd be curious why you decided not to do it? I would think that something as small as toothpick could have helped out with the alignment while you clamped, but having never done anything like this, I could be totally wrong.
Alignment wasn’t really an issue surprisingly. When gluing the two halves together we can into an issue where they was a slight bow and a gap opened up near the nose but the clamping was the tricky part and alignment was easy once it was clamped.
I would make the entire board and drill 500 holes in it and fill them up with Great Stuff. But I understand you want to make it all wood. Yours came out great.

I haven't done any surfing so this may be a dumb question but isn't the board super slick when you get it wet? Seems like it would be hard to stand on it without something a little rougher where you stand?
At the end you’ll see me add wax to the top. Surfers use wax to make the top sticky👍🏻

Thanks for watching!! Glad you enjoyed it:) Honestly, I'd be lying saying this isn't a big undertaking. I will say though, the individual parts of making the board are relatively easy, just time consuming. The board is extremely buoyant and easy to surf. It is very heavy, but in smaller surf, which is the only time I like to use it, it works really well. If I were to change anything, it would be the width of the board. I went really wide for a fat board. I enjoy surfing it a lot, so a slightly skinnier board would be a bit more maneuverable.

Woodbrew Oh wow this last summer we drove from California to Florida and we were able to surf Jacksonville Beach. We were looking for surf on the way back and didn’t really stop to look in Alabama or Louisiana mostly because I think it was raining. We ended up surfing Galveston in Corpus Christi but it was super choppy. Do you guys get pretty good surf there in the summertime? Everybody told me that the Gulf of Mexico pretty much struggles with serve but it looks like you had a decent waves in the video.
We did the same trip! We love Jacksonville Beach! Man I would love to chat with you and geek out on Hollow Wooden Surfboards. D and J Wooden Boards.
You should've used marine sealant for the plug. You will never get that plug out without hours of dremel surgery.

Give it a few yrs and I’m betting that board starts cracking or even coming apart / you should of wrapped it with cloth that resin isn’t enough binder bye it self

Do they have Cypress or Cedar in your area? This is a very poor method of building a board, although it was interesting to watch. You should be able to build a proper board with 6mm exterior plywood and resawing a Cedar or Cypress post into strips. Lots of plans online and youtube videos showing how. You def want to glass it though. This board wouldn't survive more than a couple of days of real surfing before it cracked and started to take on water.
