I love this! I'm only mildly interested in speedrunning, but I love that this channel has it's main focus, but will dip its toes in other tangentially related topics from time to time. It gives me a wider view of gaming in general and its appreciated.
When Super Mario 3 came out when I was in 4th grade, I had heard that there were people speed-running it. I remember my brother beating it start from finish, which isn't speed-running but does show how difficult it is to progress as you get further into it. Love the video. Now I feel an urger to play it again lol.
What?! Someone beat mitch flower power! They must be *really* capable and smart and devilishly witty. If only we could figure out their secrets to gaming and also life?!
I love Mitch Flower Power. Thank you so much for doing a video on him. Speed running old Mario games is something I find fascinating. Another great speed runner is Kosmic who does the first Mario game.
The exhale at the end of most sentences is useless and distracting. Sounds like you're going for some vocal fry. Try doing a few minutes without that and compare, it may even be easier.
Thank you so much for introducing us to the world of speedrun! Very instructive and now I can appreciate the effort that player are willing to give to succeed.
Nowadays they discover them using computer assistance so it isn't as impressive. Back in the day it took pure luck or understanding how the games code worked to even attempt it.
The fact that those Hammer Bros move according to frame input is interesting. I'm really not much into SMB3 at all (have always been more of a SMW kid) but I know you can make them move in a way that you don't need to fight them.
There is no guaranteed way to move them where you want, no. If HB has the option to go either up or down, you can't do anything to change this outcome, apart from a similar setup done with the Early Hammer manipulation shown in this video. There are however some mechanics for them where you can sometimes calculate where they are going. They will for example never walk onto a completed stage, a pipe or a spade minigame. So if he has a completed level on his left and a free spot on his right, he'll always go to the right.
I don't remember if it was Keith Olbermann or Ryan Holiday, but someone made the point you want some level of luck to be involved in sports. The RNG in SMB3 made the story of the speed run more interesting.
Basically nobody does that clip over lava in the second world 5 fortress, it's very rare for longer runs to use such a tricky move so late with no backup strategy, that's why people are so amazed by runners like Suigi and Niftski who can pull off moves like that. Also I remember Mitch saying once that if you spawn the memory card game on top of a level and complete it, the game thinks that you completed the level also, but this trick isn't allowed in any category.
I'll probably get a lot of hate over this comment, but Mario Bros and Mario Bros 3 would be much more enjoyable with Super Mario Worlds physics. Even Mario 2 would be an upgrade, but this is just my personal opinion.
Nah, personal preferences are personal preferences. But yeah, would possibly be a hot take in many a Mario community, but gotta say I agree! I've always found myself preferring a more immediate and snappier style of platformer controls over those that are 'weightier' and put more emphasis on building and maintaining momentum, like SMB1.
Sure. First of all, I want to say that if we don't count the sloppy parts, (more of that later) this was quite enjoyable and interesting video to watch. I am happy that videos of Smb3 are made. So im not here to say that "there is nothing positive" Just wanting to clarify some things. In World 2, only Mitch is mentioned to create the EH manip, when multiple people have improved it over the time. Mitch neither did fully create the original version of the manip. Also taking damage in 2-F has not been a strategy in like... 12 years or something? In fact I have not seen that ever been done. It also would have been worth mentioning that with EH, you have to play 4f1 in world 4, since you use the hammer in w2. In world 4, he got boxless, ( = Skipped useless bros, without needing to use music box) that's why he didn't use the p-wing in 5-1. He already had the box to skip the bros in w5 . Usually you have to use box in w4, therefore you need the box from w5, thus using p-wing there. So it had nothing to do with skipping the p-wing in w4. (In fact, Narfman had *more* p-wings in this run than runners usually do.) The only mandatory P-wings in the run are for 6-5 and 7f1, and you get p-wing for them without taking extra bros. In 7-6, he doesn't skip the clip because "there is so little room", but because he had the extra p-wing. (that he didn't use one in 5-1). Clips are very hard to do, because of how tight the jumps are, but it has nothing to do with the room to jump. Usually in non-boxless runs 7-6 will be clipped. About fire Mario vs hammer Mario, I don't understand why you didn't ask from experienced runner about it. If it would be crucially slower, Narfman wouldn't use it. They are about the same speed and it's just a preference what route you like. I also want to mention about the 8-1, it is the best save ever seen :D But to improve the run, Door 3 and Jesus clip are not the only strategies that could improve the run, they are not even needed for the world record attempts currently. 49 is very much possible without those risky strats. And speaking of 49, this was very weird time to do this video honestly. Narfman's wr is 9 months old, and new world record could happen pretty much any day. So this video will get outdated pretty quickly. Also I think not mentioning Sakaali's twitch channel at the beginning is nearly a crime, despite he is finnish. I guess that was all I had to say. As I said, this video wasn't bad but more research and asking more from top players definitely would have been the way to go.
@@pojr Gotta disagree. It means your comment is unlikely to be relevant or or worth anyone's time. You might enjoy the attention because it's your video, but it's just spam.
I have never heard anyone say speedrun with the emphasis on "run" before.
Chills vibes
Christopher Walken vibes

Thank you! I figured it would be cool to look at speedrunning, because it is something I follow heavily, even if I don't talk about it very much.
Bill! Bill Blinder!. How are ya?
This was really enjoyable. Wanted to say, thanks for mastering this at 60fps. It makes the NES videos look sooo much better.
Cheers!
Hey Pojr, love seeing you touch on speedruns, and really liked your take! Keep up the great work!
my man's pronunciation of speedRUN is massively throwing me off
Yeah got to me too haha
One sounds like beating a game fast, the other sounds like a pants emergency
Just his pronunciation generally
still blows me away that this stuff is even possible, truly an amazing run and a good video from Pojr as always!
Yeah, not only did narfman have to play well, but all the planets had to align together for this run to happen. And thank you!

12:18 Grabbing hammer in 7-8 optimally saves about 8 seconds. Narfman opted out of it for comfortability reasons while giving up that timesave

Wouldn't it be just crazy if they posted on this video?

Crazy how anyone even discovers speedrun tricks in the first place
Nowadays they discover them using computer assistance so it isn't as impressive. Back in the day it took pure luck or understanding how the games code worked to even attempt it.
They don’t, TAS does
This is terrible news. I thought people still figured out glitches by luck or repetition. I’m devastated.
@@yadigzz OP said it was crazy people figure this stuff out. You wouldn't say that if you knew they were tool assisted.
Sometimes the most innocent glitches we find lead to speedrun usage years later. Never disregard even the tiniest of glitch findings.

You're missing the "HOME - We’re Finally Landing" song in the video
The level 8 hands are a savage x-factor to speed running this game

Nice change-up on the content, Pojr. Can we say, "Summoning Pojr!" 😊
Definitely up for more coverage on speed-running down the line!

Sometimes luck is the strategy of winning. It might even be a last resort tool if it's all you can rely on
The best part of this video is how often you had to say Narfman.
Yeah I felt weird saying it so many times lol.
We're talking sub 50 by the time these two are done having this out, ain't we?
7:19 did he say “pee wang” ?
Yep

The trick is allowed in all categories except for 100%, but it's not useful in other categories.
Another great video, POJR! You are crushing it!
Hope we see a sub 50 and a sub 3 this year in Mario 3
I saw Super Mario Bros Speedrun and clicked thinking it was Kozmik, hi pojr!
Thiss guy putss S soundss into wordss that dont even have Sesses in themss
It took me two entire weekends to beat this game while saving the emulator at the beginning of every round so I didnt get a game over. lol
I 100% agree on the Airship in World 8being the hardest level in the game.
Yeah it's the one level I dread. I wish it were skippable
just joined the discord and wow, i love to modd
Thank you!

super mario world perfected the physics
It's ok to be wrong.
Amazing
Imagine a bus.... Oh wait, this isn't SMB1 or SMB2J....
ending sentence breathy thing has to go my dude. that is gross.
That thumbnail made my think there was somehow a PCB hack. I need glasses.
i remember when u had 20k subs
You're telling me there's an item in this game called the pee wang?
1:14 omg nice touhou reference i live koishi shes very cute
random koosh appeared :DD
"nnnhhhh"
It's "by accident" not "on accident." Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.
What's the difference? I'm positive I've heard people using both
This is pretty 😎
he had hidas rämpytys tho it is not optimized run
Let's Go Have a great day POJR
Thank you, have a good day!
I don't have anything to say
Speed runs are cool, that takes skill and a bit of luck
Yeah, it's incredible what people can accomplish, even with things that are not within their control
There's also kaizo players who play impossibly hard games like SMW kaizo hacks. Juzcook is a kaizo player with amazing skills.
Nothing is impossible
Try speed running this game in 100% category in under 10 minutes and try to convince me that that's not impossible.
Everything is impossible, nothing is possible, just give up
Great video!
Summoning Pojr
