I moved away from Sweden when I was 18 and since then I have learnt a lot about what other people think about Sweden. Funnily enough, most things people say about Sweden are not actually true, so today I am sharing some of my favourite fun facts about Sweden that are indeed TRUE.
The Swedish culture is a weird and wonderful one, and we are often made fun of by our Scandinavian neighbours. But I think our culture is wonderful.
Currently I live in New Zealand, so as far away from Sweden as one possibly could go (!), but all of my family live in Scandinavia. I have family in both Denmark, Sweden and Norway and Scandinavia is one of my favourite places on earth!!
If you have any questions or thoughts I would love to hear them. Had you heard any of these facts before? Do you know any other fun facts about Sweden? Tell me everything!
Thank you so much for watching 🌺

I went to Sweden (Falkenberg, Gothenburg) during midsommar to visit family 10 years ago when I was 19 and learned so much about the culture and my family heritage. I am so grateful for Sweden and the influence that Swedish culture & minimalism has impacted the world. There is so much in Swedish philosophy that can be taught on America.

When you hear about Swedish things this way you realize how similar the Scandinavian countries really are. I am from Norway, and we love to point out all the differences between us, but compared to the rest of the world we are really similar.

I recently found out that I am 60% Norwegian. Ever since, I have been trying to learn as much about Scandinavian as possible. I wasn’t raised in the culture, but I have found that I agree with much of the culture and belief systems. I am slowly trying to incorporate as much into my life as is possible.
Your videos are interesting and fun to watch. Thank you

These intra Scandinavian differences persist even generations later among the descendants of immigrants to America. I'm basically a Swede and a guy I went to high school with back in the 1970s was basically a Norwegian. One day I run into him and he's telling me that he got a job working out in the hot sun on a track crew for the railroad. I say to him "well Ole (not his real name), you are aware aren't you, you do understand don't you, that doing hard labor out in the hot sun is the only thing you norwegians are good for "!

Being Swedish, I’ve always loved Swedish girls and their romantic and down to earth ways. However, I’ve always been even more attracted to Norwegian girls. I guess it’s them speaking Norwegian that just makes them very cute, it’s a very sensual language to me.

Tak for the video. My grandparents immigrated to USA 100 years ago (1923). I grew up learning a variety of cultural things, but never enough. There's still family in Sweden who I hope to visit before I'm too old. Meanwhile I'll enjoy your videos. A sidenote on the cinnamon buns, we frequently had cardamom buns instead. I still have Grandma's recipe. So good and such memories.

I love that you mentioned the Sami people. My great-grandfather moved to America from Sweden with 3 of his siblings and left 4 siblings and parents behind, and I love learning about our Swedish heritage. We still have a lot of family there that we try to stay in touch with. My husband also is very Scandinavian and has relatives in Sweden, as well. My grandmother a few years ago took a DNA test and found out that she is 99% Sami. And ever since then I’ve been very interested in learning about the Sami people. Unfortunately, since we moved from Minnesota, where many of the Scandinavian people settled and they still have a lot of Scandinavian cultural events and museums and such, there isn’t a lot of Scandinavian culture in the southern USA. But watching your videos about Scandinavian culture makes me realize that a lot of the things we do is because we are Swedish and it was passed down by my great-grandparents and the Scandinavian influence in Minnesota. I’ve never been to Sweden, but it is top on my bucket list. Thanks for posting these videos so I can learn more about my cultural heritage. I wish the book you mentioned was translated to English so I could read it!

When I was in high school, I had a Social Studies teacher whose name was Mr. Vodin. He taught us about the European origins of his name and how he went back to Europe as a soldier to fight the Nazis. Coming from European descent myself, I found it all very fascinating. However, you have shed more light on the teachings of my dear teacher, who at the time, felt that any further teaching might have been... polically incorrect. Thank you!

I really enjoy your videos. I moved to Hawaii to go to university, and have now lived here 1/2 my life. My closest friends here are also Swedish, and it’s so refreshing to see your videos showing different angles of Swedes and Swedish culture. Since my dad is from Kiruna, it was very enjoyable to hear you talk about the Same culture which I have been exposed to since I was little. My family was not Same though, but was skilled in creating Same crafts (hantverk in Swedish language). We always ate cinnamon rolls in a very specific way, not sure if all Swedes do, but we unroll a piece, eat it, then unroll another piece and eat it, and do it this way until we get to the center mass. I’ve never seen people in Sweden eat it any other way. It actually tastes way better this way, each bite being less dense as opposed to just taking a bite of the whole roll. Try it, it’s an experience.

Hej Saga! A sweet friend from Hong Kong asked me if Polar Bears walked the streets in Sweden. I started to laugh then realised that he was serious (this was in the 90's). So I explained, kindly, no they don't. He was so kind and lovely and he really didn't know anything about Sweden except it's waaaaay up North with lots of snow. In his mind he probably confused it with photos from the Artic or something. My parents are from Norrland so I like surströmming. LOL! Hubby doesn't. I've been in the news too! Hahahaha!!! It was when I was a child and danced ballet. I've also been an extra in a movie and ads. LOL! I love the movie Midsommar! Crazy and really great movie! But no - not like we celebrate midsummer. We do pay lots of taxes, but we do get it back in health care, schools etc. Well, we do have the Viper, but I think they are pretty scared of people unless threatened. Oh yes! I love kanelbullar! Facts about Sweden is so funny! And sometimes I need to watch clips about Sweden (although Swedish) just a reminder. LOL! Lovely video!

My heritage is Swedish, one quarter and three quarters Irish. Interesting combination to say the least. I always leave the house looking the best I can and try to be polite and kind and not loud and unseemly which living here in America doesn't seem to be the norm. I grew up in Washington state and I fit in well there and my parents were from the Midwest, actually Illinois. I learned to use manners inside the house but especially outside. We spent a great deal of time outside regardless the weather. I cherish my Swedish heritage and feel closer to that than my Irish heritage. I, silly me, thinks the Swedish part of me calms down the wild Irish side. Maybe not so silly though, eh.
I lived in NY on Long Island for eleven and a half years and now in Florida for the last ten years. Neither NY nor Florida appear to adhere to what I consider old world values. The people I encounter are so happy and almost excited to be around that positive energy and pleasing presentation. It makes me feel good and I like putting a smile on people's faces ( and the hugs are nice too!)
This was a great video and I thank you!!

There is so much more to Sweden than IKEA LoL I feel so much more at home in Scandinavia I left school in the UK and lived in the Faroe Islands and since a lot of my favourite places are in the North. I lived in the Arctic circle and travelled around Norway, Sweden and Finland. After visiting and returning to the UK its easy to see how the UK has been governed by American capitalism and materialism. I love Sweden I have just returned from 5 days in Stockholm it was so refreshing, clean , polite and interesting. I went for an interview as I would love to spend more time there. Incidentally I love NZ as much as a nature lover NZ has everything, volcanoes , glaciers, high mountains, whale watching and all the adventure sports. Travel is the best education as it becomes your own spiritual journey and to discover not only yourself but how other people live and their belief systems.
I have travelled to 81 countries and worked in 40 and met lots of amazing people in amazing and remote places.
Where I grew up in the UK was an old Vic..Viking settlement and when teaching English it is to explain the roots of each word and so many are old Norse origins which is to remind people in Europe that we are more than kindred spirits but hold a long family history together and that a European community existed between people long ago.
I do love cinnamon too .its from a tree bark similar to the avocado ..certainly not grown in Sweden ...again a reminder that as people we traded all over the world and traditions grew out of inherited knowledge shared from each other .

I'm from Poland. My father's sister married a guy from Sweden, and lived there for a while, learnt the language.
Oh yes, I've seen midsummer, a shocking movie!
I too have travelled the world. Lived in Kuwait and England.
I visited your country in my car, along with Denmark and Norway. Than on another trip, I went to Finland. I would love to go back, and drive all the way round the Baltic sea. I was surprised, I think it was in Latvia (maybe Estonia), to find a place where the Poles fought with the Sweeds for control of those lands.
In our schools we learn about the "Sweedish Flood", the time when your king was also our king (Vasa). Of course later there was war, mostly to do with religion, Catholics here, Protestants there. Next to many castles in Poland, now ruins, on a billboard it is written "destroyed during the sweedish flood".
But there was also a time when we cooperated, fighting hand in hand, against Russia.
I'm right in the process of assembling my sit-stand desk from Ikea. I made an error along the way, tomorrow I'll have to partially dismantle it, to fix the thing I assembled incorrectly.
In Japan, I was surprised to see a map of the world with Japan in the middle. My japanese girlfriend called me a "parasite child" because I lived off my parents. An interesting perspective.
In Kuwait, speaking to a guy from Pakistan, I told him my name in Michael. He replied Michael Jackson! Probably the only Michael he heard of.
Yes, traveling is nice. You get to meet interesting people. And knowing English, you can communicate with them.
l found that young people in the countries with a small population know English.
In Germany, France, Japan, its not that common. It was harder to communicate.

Love this. I speak French and Italian (plus a little Hindi ). And love how Swedish deals with vowels and double consonants. Only Italian seems to
Match the clarity of double consonants. Norway , Denmark and Sweden plus Finland seem to have struck a wonderful
Balance and seem to care about people in ways that are missing in the USA. especially the north and Finland has almost as many guns per capita as the USA but not the American problem and obsessions. Bravo interesting vid!!!

Me: two Swedish parents, born and raised in Paris though, whenever I come back to Värmland... I mean... especially Hammarö. I sound like a fool when I don't understand the dialect (personally I was only taught speaking "rikksvenska", why? Dunno). Especially when in Värmland the "oral" culture plays a big deal. However people are always very kind and don't mind when I ask what does such and such expression mean ;-)
And thank you for bringing awareness to the Sámi!

Thank you for the comments about Swedish cinnamon rolls. In the U S , they do not put butter in the baking process and they just drown the roll in sweet icing. True Swedish cinnamon rolls are so much better.

It is my dream to visit Sweden one day. Cinnamon rolls are one of my favourite foods. Like, I could eat them every day. So a trip to Sweden would be perfect. On a sadder note, it seems that indigenous people in Sweden have been treated just as badly as indigenous people here in Canada. A very dark part of our history that continues to haunt us today.

On my mother's side of the family we are Swedish and Norwegian. I was into myths and legends as a kid. I heard about the Norse myths in the Eddas. You could buy copies of the Eddas from The American-Scandinavian Society, if I recall. My father took me there and it was in a townhouse in Manhattan. We rang the bell and an old man in long underwear answered the door. I think he was the caretaker. It turns out the place was under renovation when we visited. He rummaged around and found the books I wanted and sold them to us.

Fact #1: The Nordic god Thor's name is not pronounced with a lisping sound - in Sweden the "H" is silent so the correct prononciation is actually "Tor". A bit strange that Saga uses the American pronunciation.

They lack what french refer to as "joie de vivre," which is the exuberant enjoyment of life. In contrast to the lively and expressive nature of the French, Swedes tend to prioritize practicality and efficiency over emotional expression. This cultural difference can sometimes make it challenging for outsiders to connect with them on a deeper level or fully understand their perspective on life.

Hej Saga! Gillar verkligen dina videos!

    • @SagaJohanna
      @SagaJohanna  Рік тому +1

Hej!

Putting the baby outside to sleep is a funny idea but I can see how fresh air makes sense and is good for them.
I used to sleep with my windows open in winter (snowy and cold up in the mountains) and wear a knit cap to bed with my heavy duvet and my giant dogs to keep warm. I slept so well like that!
