Hi John
What i find on new builds is a lot of the water from the roofs is going into downpipes a d poorly installed soakaways. We tben add to the drainage system with our patios which increase the volume of water into the soakaways. Dont forget the soakaway water goes back into what is always an already soaked garden .ticks an environmental box for service water being kept in your garden and not adding to the already overloaded main sewers but it keeps these gardens soaking wet. If you suggest say a new create soakaway it can be an expensive cost on top of the costs for new paving so most say no to it so the problem never goes away .Also SUDS in wales isnt adequate enough with our huge rainfall which is the wettest in the uk.
We all face the same issue whats the answer that's tbe big question is there one mate
Good luck great video great knowledge
Justin brickright 👍
Hi Justin Buddy how’s it going
@@GreentopLandscapes
All good with me mate hope you and family are well 👍
Love the attention to the detail john
Thank you Malcolm mate
If I haven't got all in one Ballast I use My MOT type 1 and mix sharp sand and cement together. Ive used the digger to knock up a load before!
Cheers Mark
Think it's great what you are doing. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Mark that means a lot.
Just started watching your videos and I don't normally comment, but your knowledge is second to none and all the hints and tips are really useful, keep up the good work and I will be watching them all.👏👏👏👍
Thanks Janes that’s kind of you, I do make mistakes mate
Superb Johnny.
thank you
Hi. Thank you so much for all your time in making these videos. We’ve just started our DIY job doing our porcelain patio and have learnt all we know from your videos :) A quick question please? How thick should the layer of lean mix be? Thanks
Thank you mate, as long as it’s a solid bed but don’t do any less than 4 inches, but make sure the dig is solid
Thanks so much for the quick reply. So we have at least 10cm of compacted sub base and we need 4 inches or of lean mix on top of that? Thanks again.
Hi Johny do you know of a sealent for porcelain that gives it a continual wet look . ...cheers mate looking great .
Lots out there Brian mate
great video, noticed the camera quality is not as good as your usual?
Sorry Mate thats strange as its the same I will get on it
Another great video.
Thanks again!
Heya mate watching from Edinburgh, I’ve recently started a building company (clack Construction) doing landscaping mostly
Love watching your videos
You should do one just talking about a lean mix and how to do it from start to finish
Thanks
Dylan
Cheers Dylan mate, there is one I think.
Would also like to see this video on lean mix.
Hi Johnny boy, going to be doing my own DIY porcelain patio shortly and have been watching your videos. Will put down 100-150mm mot, 50mm 1:15 pqc and then 30mm mortar bed 1:6. Can the mortar bed be a dry mix or needs to be a wet mix?
PS have you used the Rubi TZ manual cutter for 20mm porcelain?
Thanks.
Hi David, you can you a dry mix but it needs to be moist and yes for the TZ
Great video as usual 👌
Thanks Jasper mate
@@GreentopLandscapes, hope you and family are well and your nice and busy 👍
Hi Johnny Boy. Another good vid. I've got a 40sqm sub-base that I want to improve in similar fashion to what you've done here. It's currently comprised of a mix of 803/MOT1 & 14-20mm chippings. Want to bind it all a bit more so it compacts nice and flat with no voids so thinking to add a lean mix over the top and rake through. Few questions if I can (1) 15 and 1 - sharp sand or ballast for the 15? (2) do I make it up semi dry (just using the moisture from the sand) or add water? (3) presumably I can barrow mix it up, tip it out in sections and level off? Any advice appreciated.
Scott mate call me it will be esier
Are you mixing up the lean mix yourselves. Or having it delivered?
Ourselves Kev mate
Hi.enjoyed video. What ratio mix of lean mix. Thanks
Thanks Dave, lean mix was 15 to 1
Is your lean mix for the PQC or for the slab bed?
Hi mate. Would you say a 1:60 fall is ok? I have about 50mm of fall over 3.5m.. my patio is against a gravel board and it looks really steep. I’ve already laid 20m of porcelain tiles and now I’m panicking? 😂🤦🏻♂️
Hi Bud it’s the standard but I think it looks silly to be honest, it’s entirely upto you but I go 1:70
Are there any issues if porcelain is not sealed after laying?
Everything needs to be maintained it’s like cleaning windows as glass has micro pores but the issue is keeping the grout clean as it can go green in the UK climate
@@GreentopLandscapes wet and forget works wonders every now and again, diluted mix sprayed onto grout. Takes a few minutes :)
You can get solvent sealers
Johnyboy - I can't seem to find a local supplier for a ready mix leanmix so I'm going to order ballast and cement separately. Is all ballast the same? sharp sand and 20mm gravel? Just going to barrow the ballast in and add the sand and give a bit of a mixing on the ground (on top of compacted mot1). Or do I need to mix it more precise? Great help and advice by the way. Top Man
Shame should have it ballast and cement at 15 to 1 call me if you need to talk
@@GreentopLandscapes Thanks John - I've got a couple more companies to call tomorrow so fingers crossed.
Hey Johnny, Firstly I think the videos you do are spotty dog. I'm currently preparing a sub base for my new new porcelain patio and was wondering if having ACO which goes along the perimeter at the rear of my house would I have the fall towards the ACO so it can drain or do I still set my fall to run off towards the grass?
Cheers Buddy, to be honest you can run water either way as long as the water gets away and does not hold but generally good practice to run away not that it can not be done.
@@GreentopLandscapes You're a star thanks Johnny, keep up the good work and for posting informative content.
Hi johnny, when you sbr your lean mix, do you just do it like you would pva a wall pre plaster?
Also do you seal all porcelain?
Ive got my first one to do! But it is in a glass room.
Nice informative vid pal👌🏻 Cheers
Cheers Buddy, you can seal porcelain as it has micro pores like glass and will get dirty but it’s to ensure your grout does not go green. SBR is a great water proofed so a coating over the leanmix may be 50/50 will stop the moisture in the mortar being sucked out.
@@GreentopLandscapes
Good stuff johny, cheers for replying mate👌🏻👍🏻
another useful vid. I so wish I could send pictures here...to show you the absolute "sh1tsh0w" a local rogue trader did to our porcelain slabs, when he "tried" to lay the slabs....on hardcore and sharp sand no less...no spacing, no grout, no runoff angle, not forgetting cutting them without a water cutter !!! sooooo angry!!
Give us a call Thomas mate
What porcelain sealer do you use? I want my patio to look the same when sealed.i dont want wet look or shiny looking
Elements Shield
Thank you
I searched elements shield.couldnt find it! Is that the company name?

@@GreentopLandscapes do you always use a sealer john? not seen you cover this subject much unless i missed it?
Have you Played on Trampoline
Nooooo
How deep do you lay your lean mix
In what way buddy
I’ve dug a sunken patio. From the French doors on rear of property. I’ve dug down 700mm. I am running a Aco drain along the house wall so porcelain will have a fall back to the house. I’ve hit clay on the whole patio area. So on top of the clay how deep should the lean mix be ideally
