I'm 71, a 30 year gout sufferer. Doctors, Pharma, natural remedies, exercise and avoidance of high purine foods did not cure my gout.
Went on keto diet and in 10 days my gout attack pain and swelling were gone.
5 months now and have switched from keto to highfat/low carb diet.
Results are very good with no more gout symptoms, lower blood pressure and 12 pounds weight loss.
Now enjoying all of those high purine foods but avoid SUGAR and keep carbs to less than 100 p/day.

This was the best video that has helped me understand Why I have Gout on the Keto diet. I started June 1st and got my first Gout attack six weeks later. Then I just got my 2nd one week ago.. They have been extremely painful! I had never had gout before and was starting to think this diet may not be for me. Which it seems everyone is telling me. Now I feel confident to stay on Keto. Thank you Dr Bosworth for breaking it down and I look forward to watching more of your videos.

The cure for kidney stones is the asparagus and coke treatment. I've used it quite a few times since having to have surgery to remove my first stone in 2012. Simply purchase a bundle of asparagus and a 6 pack of real coca cola. For whatever reason, it needs to be coca cola, not a different brand, not diet, etc. just real coke. Steam and then puree the asparagus, and add what you want to make it taste good.....you're basically making soup that's about the consistency of split pea. Immediately consume all the asparagus, and then follow that with all of the coca cola. You will notice that the pain in your lower back improves right away. You will start peeing, and peeing, and peeing. The combination of the 2 products will dissolve the stones enough that you will pass them painlessly over the next few days or weeks. My suggestion is to do the treatment once a day (which is what I do) for 2 or 3, or even 4 days, and then see what happens. It works 100%. You'll know when you've peed out a stone, or stones, because suddenly the pain will be different, or gone completely.
I just had to go through this 3 months ago. Day after day, the aching and stiffness in my lower back began getting worse following a 13mi very hilly trail run. I knew I'd probably dislodged a stone. I wound up doing the treatment 3 or maybe 4 days in a row. Within day 1 of treatment, I started peeing out small black hunks about the size and shape of a flea on a dog. I kept doing the treatments because, while the pain in my back was improving, it wasn't really going away. About 2 weeks later, I peed out an actual stone, painlessly, that was about 3mm in diameter, and smooth.
I'm prone to stones and gout because I simply don't drink enough water. I also eat a lot of fruit.....so as Dr. Bosworth states, there's the sugar/insulin connection. I'm 57, very fit/athletic, and an avid long distance runner and mountain biker (vids on my channel), and eat mostly raw, fresh produce, no grains or corn, and no dairy. So I don't need to be in ketosis or to be "dieting" to loose fat. I just need to drink a lot more water and keep my salt and fruit sugar intake lower.

Dr. Boz I wanted to say thank you for this video. I have been hesitant with Keto for years and have been stagnant in any weight loss for years. I only found out three years ago that I had gout after my first flare up post gorging at a Brazilian steak house buffet. I've never had a flare up since. Mostly because I learned about uric acid and what triggers it. I devoloped a habit of drinking a minumum of 12oz of low sodium V8 everyday to help with my vegetable intake and lower the backlash for the sodium rich foods I consumed. The keto way of eating has always disagreed with me since learning I had gout. Just like I figured out a build up of uric acid causes gout and started the low sodium v8 routine. I have now figured out what vegetables are okay with keto and how to avoid the keto flu. 180mg of broccoli for example is more vitamin c than an orange. I remember that and often have some broccoli in the morning and after the gym. Cucumbers, celery and Kale are my go to with my meal preps. I bake white, grilled chicken tenderloins, cut them into square pieces and use them as a source satity to not make the kale so light. I've learned to use yogurt based ranches and am careful with sauces in general because of the sugar and carbs in those bottles. I have learned to portion size my fat through healthy fats rather than bacon, bacon greas, red meat, loads of cheese and butter. I use olive oil for example and see that the bottle says 14 grams of fat per teaspoon. I'll actually use a teaspoon and depending on my cardio that day I decide how much to use. I mix it up and have boiled eggs around, a lot of avocados and learn the habit of portion control and proper hydration. I put lemon in my water most of the day. I keep a 64oz water bottle filled and by my bed always. Do my best to drink half of it when I wake up. I remember the importance of intermittent fasting. Know the time I ate last so I can count the hours and what's the best intermitten time frame for me. Most importantly, I gained the confidence to do all of this by remembering what you said. "If you're going to do Keto do it for a long time. The year, stick with it." Not those words exactly, but it helped me more than you know. Thank you, truly!

I have been inundated with kidney stones and 6 attacks of gout since December, 2017. My body was producing so much of this I just passed a 6mm stone over the last two weeks. I was on a Keto diet BUT did not stay in ketosis and went back and forth over the keto fence. This explains so much of what I was doing wrong. I was not consistent and it seems that is what has caused all this pain and suffering. I though it was because I was on the Keto diet, however, my inconsistencies cause me to form all this mess. Thank you for your video!

One of the best remedies for making kidney stones less painful is an item that is NOT ketogenic. And that is cola. It contains phosphoric acid which dissolves the sharp edges of the crystals which makes them less painful to pass. I have had 4 kidney stones in the last 12 years and this helped.

8 months carnivore now, to fight breast cancer (Tippens protocol), am 88 and just got gout for the first time in my life. Embarked on two-day water fast now. No more chicken livers, which I had recently added to my OMAD (beef, bison, eggs, bacon, heavy whipping cream - in one cup of decaf daily) and red bell pepper (low oxalate and alkaline). Maybe twice a week hard raw milk cheese (Compté). Once a week anti-cancer broccoli (more would trigger my MTHFR variant). Disheartened but youtubing my way out of this nightmare, I hope. 5'2", 89 lbs (after carnivore dropped me from my normal 105 lbs. in three short months. We are each of us, so different.🤔🙄🤪💖

Thank you for this information. A few months ago I had the symptoms of gout. I had been on a Ketogenic diet for about 5 months. I guess I had started breaking those crystals down in my right big toe. When I finally was able to get in to my doctor the symptoms had subsided. He tested my blood and he said I didn't have gout and doubted what I did naturally with sour cherry juice did not cure my problem. Thank you for your videos. I am learning a lot about medical issues. Also, I just found out from my eye doctor that I am very dehydrated and it was causing me to have large red blood areas on my eye ball (I know there is a medial term but I can't think of it right now). I started guzzling down water and in a week all was well and also I could tell a huge difference in other areas of my health. Lots of water for now on.

I have had a history of kidney stones causing me to get kidney infections but when it all started my doctor told me that the stones were small enough to pass and I have never had any issues with pain related to passing stones so I never knew if I was passing them or not, but still getting kidney infections sometimes. I started a Keto diet about a month ago as well as intermittent fasting. I used to always eat only two meals a day but I was a grazer so I would snack in between. When I started my diet, first thing I did was a water fast between meals & once a week I OMAD. Then a couple of weeks into it I tried OMAD every day & soon into that my sides started to hurt & it got worse, radiating into my groin, until I almost went into the ER but because I had watched this video I assumed the diet was causing my kidney stones to dislodge & so I was possibly passing them. After 2 days of excruciating pain ( almost like labor pains) it stopped. I had no signs of the kidneys stones in my urine or blood or anything but the pain was gone. Now I still have a dull pain in the areas of my kidneys but I just remember to drink a lot of water & it never gets worse than that. I don’t know if I should have my kidneys checked or continue what I am doing & hope that I might have passed the small stones I had. My mother thinks it was my diet that produced more stones. That is possible, but I am pretty sure this diet is cleansing my body of the existing stones.

As a person who has both had kidney stones, and gout, and been on the keto diet for just a couple of months, I really appreciated this video. I actually thought that I'd be experiencing more gout on Keto due to the amounts of red meat I might be eating (although in actuality, I'm probably eating a lot less per day due to managing my calories, etc.). I'll still be aware of that, but it's good to know that Keto is more likely to help reverse any crystalization, even if at some point I'll suffer some attacks while the crystals break away. Also, my doctor never once told me that hydration was important in preventing gout. In the past (this has changed a lot in the last year) I would really go long periods without drinking enough, and that likely was as much of a cause as anything.

I was overweight with GOUT, migraines and right side pain (gal bladder stones?) The ketogenic diet healed me. Down 70 pounds and all that inflammation and pain gone within 6 months. I've known people to do KETO wrong and eat too much fat. Bacon and sausage every day and get stuck after a few weeks of weight loss.. You can get plenty of good fats from other sources like raw nuts, eggs, coconut and MCT oils, butter, lard, avacados and beef with a little fat on it. So educate yourself with these channels because you only got one life. Take responsibility for your own health and spread this channel and other real doctors that actually heal and cure people with the KETO or natural way of eating, the way were intended to eat.

Chlonidine gives me severe dry mouth and seems to have made my gallstones and kidney stones worse. I'm tired of seeing many M.D.s, only for them to throw more drugs at me, which solves nothing, making my condition worse. Very frustrating to see doctor after doctor, whom does not tackle the root problem, but mask symptoms.

As a personal trainer I emphasize the absolute necessity for proper hydration, usually stressing this need by pointing out the body is approx. 60% water. An odd question comes up now and then, as to whether too much water can be bad for you? I tell these folk not to worry, as the average person has little or no chance of over hydrating - this isn't water-boarding we're talking about. lol

@Little pig yea the atheletes would drink water, and didn't know they were drinking too much so they started feeling bad. Unfortunately they thought they felt bad because they weren't drinking enough so kept drinking- that's how they died. Most people won't run into that problem especially if they are aware of it, the electrolytes part is something to look out for though.

kidney stones and thrush! The limitations on the Keto diet is enough already, but when you have two other diet protocols to
follow for the kidney stones and thrush is ridiculous! Lol! Thank you Dr Boz for taking the time to explain all of this in layman
    terms!

don't limit your salt intake. it's hard to be hydrated when you're low in sodium and when you drink lots of water you flush out minerals like sodium, potassium, and magnesium. you don't need to go crazy with salt but don't be afraid of it. and take potassium/magnesium citrate supplements--they help restore minerals you're losing. and low citrate levels ==> kidney stones which is why some folks take lemon juice.

Oh my gosh!!!! Seeing this video is so life changing for me. I thought I could not do keto because I have had kidney stones in the past. I was told I have another one in there but that was well over 10 years ago and I have not felt it pass. I always do better on low carb diets in the past but stopped due to thinking I would make more kidney stones. Thank you for your videos!!!!!

Speaking of stones Dr Boz you should have Sally K Norton on your show about oxalates especially with the Keto using cups of almond flour or spinach salads......a lot of the “allowable” keto foods are awful for oxalate toxin.

Was on few carbs for about 4 months and had a 6mm stone get stuck. Due to other problems, had to have a stent installed. There was also a 12mm stone farther up, so - those were taken care of a week later. My urologist said to add lemon to my hydrating water.
I've read that citrates, including citric acid ( as in lemon juice ) prevent formation of calcium oxalate stones...I've also read that hydroxycitrate - formerly used in diet pills can dissolve existing stones as well. The data on that last was very sparse, though a large company in the "litho" business seemed to take an interest in it. What is your opinion on these? Thanks.

"Make sure you stay hydrated"- what does a person on fluid restriction because of 'borderline heart failure" do about this? It concerns me greatly that unless I stay (on doctor's orders) at 1200ml or less of fluids per day, I gradually fill up with fluid in the legs and lungs, and have had to be admitted to hospital several times now because I could no longer breathe effectively. Yet I' well aware that water is essential for so much functioning of the body. I would much appreciate your helpful comments. Our normal diet has always consisted of lots of vegies - especially silver beet from our garden, small amounts of meat and a reasonable amount of grainy bread.

The ketogenic diet that doc is talking about requires NOT eating breads, potatoes, rice, cereals, sugary stuff. You get your carbs mostly from leafy green veggies, small amounts of berries and other veggies like cauliflower, broccoli and asparagus, etc. There are some carbs in things like nuts/seeds, etc. The protein and fat keep you feeling fuller longer. No sugar/low carb allows you to use ketones for energy. If you have any weight to lose, it will allow you to tap into your fat stores for energy. To lose weight keep your net carbs at 20 grams or so. To maintain weight, increase good carbs slightly. If you gain weight, cut back carbs; if you lose weight, increase carbs. 😊 Keeping glucose and insulin low is healthy and that's what doc is saying. Go into ketosis and stay there, not hop in and out. (As was my mistake and got gout for it. It HURTS) Best of luck!

Hello Dr. Boz thank you SO much for the info and I just purchased your book luv it👍 I had to go the hospital they said I had a kidney stone I’ve been in ketosis almost 5 mmonths peeing keytones and checking almost every day. The thing is I still have severe burning constant urge to go in frequent urination so I can’t seem to stay hydrated? Do you have any advice as far as why the urinary tract still burns and if that is a condition I will have to deal with in ketosis? Any help would be great! Rebecca.

I am hoping the keto diet will keep my gout from coming back. The only thing I have used that really helps and prevents gout is milk and dairy. With milk I haven't had a flair up in a few years. Right now after a mostly keto diet, and cutting back on milk, I still have not had any gout problems. I can do without milk. Spent years going without milk. But when something works to keep that gout away...you use it.

Nice video, i used to be on ketosis, i lost 50lb in 5 months. After that i quit and started and quit again, . Now, i have gout, on my right thumb and toe, really painful,. Keto diet uses bacon, red fatty meat, pork, sausage, avocado etc, all this raises uric acid on your body in big amounts, so, how is it safe to be on ketosis when you have gout?my doctor just told me to quit fats and meats. Please help me, i really want to go back to keto, im just scared to do it and get my condition even worse.

No need to abuse yourself with the keto diet. It's just a matter of calories in, calories out. Following a structured and balanced diet like the *Agoge diet* helps a great deal though.

But what's the relationship between sugar and insulin and the formation of kidney stones ? Can someone explain the mechanism ? Because all I have read concerning the development of kidney stones is excess solutes like oxalate , phosphates, etc .. because of excess intake of meat products( purines) which result in uric acid stones and phosphate stones ? Not even once was sugar or insulin mentioned ! The info is too conflicting can someone help clear the confusion?

How do you recommend for people with gallbladder issues going on Keto? I was told my gallbladder is full of sand and contracted upon itself, so it's unlikely to cause a problem. I am now starting the Wahls Protocol level three, which is more or less keto with a lot of vegetables. I'm concerned that the increase in fat might cause my gallbladder to start rumbling. The last thing I want is to end up having to have it removed.

I've been bad, I cheated with Goat milk off and on, Then the 2lb bag of blueberries went missing in one night. lol I am now one month in and my kidneys don't hurt if I tap on my back but I still feel pains off and on ,not really bad but it will stab my side and then go away. Took coffee out and starting drinking more water. Little pink salt and waiting. Just might take a little Mag too, It's been 3 days after golden corral.

Dr Boz, I have been on LCHF/Keto for 6 months, lost 50+ lbs have a history of gout and am currently getting flare-up (however no swelling or redness) and this lines up with idea that crystal might be moving out, however I have not been able to find corroborating information on this idea. Can you point to some. Thank you for your vids!
