20 Years of Silicon Valley Trends: 2004 - 2024 Insights

- In this video, I break down the top tech trends that have shaped Silicon Valley over the last 20 years, giving a clear look at how the industry has evolved.
Here, I've constructed a proprietary Trend Index to quantify the rise and decline of key tech movements, from the early 2000s to the present.
This index is built on two parameters:
Venture Capital Investments - The amount of funding allocated by VC firms into startups across various categories.
Media Mentions - The frequency of trend-specific mentions in influential tech media outlets such as TechCrunch, Wired, and The Verge.
The index is normalized to 100, with 100 representing the highest possible hype level for any trend during a given period.
Please note, there is potential for overlap between some trend categories due to naming conventions. Trends such as AI and Machine Learning may intersect, reflecting how technological terms are often grouped together by investors and media.
Additionally, some trends, like the Metaverse showcase unique dynamics in my ranking. While there was little to no VC investment flowing to startups in this space (aside from Facebook's massive internal investment), the sheer amount of media buzz surrounding the topic propelled it to a high ranking, albeit a short-lived one. Conversely, topics such as Telecom maintained a relatively low profile in the press, yet the massive investments funneled into this sector significantly elevated its position in my index.
All financial and media data used in this analysis is sourced from open datasets, ensuring transparency. If you are interested in accessing my underlying data and calculations for educational purposes, feel free to contact me directly.

Hi, I'm Sasha.
I crunch numbers, play with data, and create cool visuals. If you enjoy my work, a little support can get me a coffee and a cookie for my baby girl, Eva.
For those feeling generous enough to help me keep going - spoiler alert: I'm a total crypto virgin. Never owned a single coin. Your support would mean a lot to me !!

Remember when 'the cloud' just meant bad weather?
Music: Heaven and Hell
Hello! Yes, and i love seniconducting.
I'm surprised no semiconductors in 2024 ??!
The cloud is just someone else's computer.
@@bravoninetyseven In a more strict way (how it's used by techs, not by salesmen) a cloud is one or many computers using an infrastructure that doesn't care about computers. But the way sales people using it matches exactly your definition. I hope people use the tech meaning one day, as the sales meaning is totally meaningless...
Metaverse hype: 100
Metaverse users: 2
Have the lands been purchased? 😂
Dotcom boom taught me one thing. You can't pay rent with stock options.
Haha so true
Что ты имеешь ввиду?
But some people want to tax those unrealized gains.
i love the fall of NFT scam ahaha
Nft as a technology is very cool and useful tho. Just not that bullshit that got "commercial" written over it xD
It needs to settle down.
@@SinclairWest Yeah, stuff like ticketing and membership will be so much better with NFT based systems. It's so sad to see technology being misused like NFTs were. I'm pretty sure it will rise again after the scam stuff will settle
@@projoker999yes. Also with this AI hype. It's easy to distinguish using nfts what's legit and whose art it really is. But crypto is one of the worst domain ever and 99% people don't care about innovation. Just lazy same stuff for a quick cash grab during hype.
Crypto is also a scam, a ponzi scheme. At least 99.9% of them
6:11 Cybersecurity emerges after NFT's hit number one...not a coincidence.
Hello cryptocurrency, goodbye cryptocurrency. Hello cryptocurrency, goodbye cryptocurrency.
I don't know any other YT channel that has such a reach with the same background song every time
lol
@@DataIsBeautifulOfficial Don't you dare change it😁
Funny that all trends follow the same 5 steps:
1. Innovation phase (only few who know and invest)
2. Early phase ( companies get on the trend)
3. Growth phase ( becomes widespread in its bubble and slowly in mainstream)
4. Saturation phase ( what's normally considered a "trend" at it's high. Aka your aunt carol also heard of it)
5. Integration/downfall (the hype declines and the use in everday activities determines if the trend perishes or stays at a constant level below the peak)
Great examples are metaverse vs smarthome. Both got very hyped in their bubble but one is integrated and one perished ^^
This was such a cool video idea.
This word cloud doesn't help reflecting reality at all...
This is amazing! Glad you compiled all of this data. Really shows how many bubbles came and went. AI will soon follow I think, but we’ll hold on to some of the tech and implement it well vs the chaos rn.
Thanks for the comment! I get your point on AI, but I don’t think it’ll be a bubble in the same way. Unlike past trends, AI is already being deeply integrated across industries - finance, healthcare, even daily apps. While there’s definitely hype, the tech behind it has a lot of practical use cases.
@@DataIsBeautifulOfficial oh that was exactly my point 😂. Currently it’s like everything NEEDS AI to be successful and I think at some point we will get passed that and just use it where it is needed like in the ways you said. Like I hate fully generative AI stuff, but with music/audio I love using AI for noise reduction or to quickly get settings on plugins.
Silicon Valley is getting more like a growing playground for young minds.
something shifted around 2021 and i feel like we are in the next era of the future now lmao
I’m personally just waiting for flying cars.
Dotcom boom: Get rich quick!
NFT: Get broke faster!
funny to see how quickly NFTs came and went
Great video, very interesting collection of data.
I'll be learning about Gig Economy as it was a very consistent marker throughout this presentation.
Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Looking forward to the AI overhype to take the nft dip.
No. I don't think so. Ai will stay here always now. We all know ai is the future. From sci fi to everything. AI will be the final creation of humans. So, it is something that we have to work on eventually. But yeah, a lot of the startups are just riding the hype wave.
AI might be hyped, but at least it’s actually useful.
@@DataIsBeautifulOfficial yes. Even if the hype dies in near future. It'll eventually grow up again. It's not like Dapps. Where crypto bros are building decentralised facebook, tiktok, etc. Not that useless stuff. Ai is actually useful. A good rule of thumb is: if even the most simple normal use can see the usefulness of the product it's something that'll stay in long term. Ai is definitely that product unlike crypto where people were hopping in for quick money without understanding how crypto will be useful in real world.
@@DataIsBeautifulOfficial AI has been a field of research since the '60s and in consumer-facing use cases since at least the '90s.
I wouldnt be so quick to heart spam comments my dude.
Me encanta éste canal, hay un gran trabajo y busqueda de información detrás de cada video que hace.
Thanks a lot!
How long did it take to collect all the needed data. Especially the media mentions seem very time-consuming for me.
Collecting the data was quicker than you'd think. With the right parsers, there’s nothing you can’t handle. It’s more about refining the results afterward, that was the toughest part.
@@DataIsBeautifulOfficialUnfortunately the way you got that data, obviously based on commercial texts, doesn't tell you anything. If you would tried to collect it in a meaningful way, I would wonder if you're the NSA, Blackrock or something.
I remember these words coming up in media at the time you can see it in your chart, but unfortunately media word usage is not really connected to the real use in any way.
Kinda shocked gig economy didn't blow up more after March 2020
Place make bast selling Counsel 1996-2024 playstation Vs Xbox vs Nintendo vs sega❤❤❤❤
What's the difference between social networks and social media?🤔
it got pretty crazy
True
Every day closer to Skynet
I just hope Skynet comes with a good user manual.
Why are you uploading videos so late I really like your videos please make another one on games
What do you mean late? There're 24 different time zones lol
Nah man sorry I mean after a months or 2 there is huge gap just upload regularly
Well, the next trends tend to be invented by AI itself. Let's just sit back and enjoy the ride and hope it doesn't get too bumpy for us 🤖
Unfortunately, this is obviously just a word cloud, that doesn't tell you anything but what phrases have been popular...
I get what you mean. But that’s exactly the point of the video - trends are all about the buzz.
Brilliant!
And I thought Google was the top dog 😅😆
People just use Google as default gateaway to online world not particularly interested in them
Not much innovation in this field nowadays.
@@DataIsBeautifulOfficial true!
@@KazrBrekker yeah make sense ur right
where is the "CRYPTO" trend?
hmm
wow this is great, Love thinking what I was doing during the top trends
Which one do you like the most of these mine is 🤓 smartphone ❤❤😊
Mobile apps no doubt.
Telecom was decreasing...
It was huge and super hyped in 1990s
The rise and fall of NFT 😂
The NFT hype was wild!
