We do try to read all comments and reply to as many as possible. Please try to keep your comments clean- kids and ladies read them too. I was told by YT that cuss words in the comment section are a negative. I don't have enough time to sort through the comments held in limbo with cuss words in them.

    So spalling is when a projectile or blast wave impact an armor plating causing the opposite side of the impact to break apart and become fragmentation. The effect that you were trying to stop is primary fragmentation, the projectile breaks apart into smaller and sometimes more hazardous pieces that continue to have down range effects. Go forth with new knowledge!

    • @otetechie
      @otetechie 6 років тому +5

      1BoneChip1
      It’s spalling.
      Spall means to break up into chips or pieces.
      If the bullet shatters, the smaller pieces are spall.
      If a DU round punches through amor, the shards or amor and of the round are both spall.

    • @1BoneChip1
      @1BoneChip1 6 років тому +18

      Negative on your last ghost rider, although you are quite right on my spelling error. When it comes to ordnance the act of a projectile coming from together is fragmentation. Spall by the oxford dictionary is as you described and you are correct in referring to the small pieces from the armor as spall. That being said spall is strictly limited to the effects generated by the armor receiving some kinetic energy transfer from an impact or blast wave. When in doubt, 60 series out!

  • @cliff.sl.0075
    @cliff.sl.0075 4 роки тому +4

    you’re correct. Everyone commonly misuses the terms. Splatter/splash is when the projectile does not penetrate an object. The round breaks apart and takes the path of least resistance creating bullet splash or splatter. Spalling is when the projectile penetrates an object and the material the projectile penetrates is projected forward creating spalling.

    Our armor isn’t rubber coated (line-x etc). Our plates are compressed ceramic w Kevlar on top followed by some padding on top. It’s rated to stop a 7.62mm M-80 ball. Made by Ceradyne, inc. We tested it in Iraq during the 1st deployment and it would stop 3 M16 (5.56mm) rounds. After 3 it was toast, but any round bigger than that you better hope that you only get it once (or not at all of course lol) or get lucky if you get hit twice! Also, we had to change out our plates every so often because the integrity of the ceramic would easily get compromised because the corners of the plates would start to crack and crumble and spread towards the middle of the plate.

      They must have made some serious advances because I never saw that in my time in. After 2008. The newer ones seem to hold together much better. They can take quite a few rounds now. As long as they dont stack on the same spot.

      MWB Gaming If you’re getting hit more than that you’re doing something wrong, and you’ll probably be out of commission anyways. I know a guy who took an AK round to the chest in Afghanistan. Broken ribs and a basketball sized bruise. Got a Purple Heart out of it. 1 will pretty much put you out of the fight; 3 or 4 sounds excruciating.

      The ceramic is a byproduct of the military's obsession with Level IV. While it sounds great and all, Level III is sufficient for nearly all tasks (besides stopping AP, but true AP still isn't particularly prevalent due to cost), and most have MUCH better multi-hit capabilities.
      It's a bit of a pick your poison type thing.

    Bullet fragmentation is the bullet breaking up; spalling is when metal on the reverse side of the armor breaks off without the projectile penetrating.
    Both can be bad in the context of a chest plate, but anti-spalling is particularly important on tanks, because the energy required to create spalling is roughly constant with armor thickness; against heavy armor it’s easier to design projectiles to create spalling that kills the crew than to design projectiles that penetrate.

    "Spall" is something that breaks off something solid usually due to impact. Also applied to mining (spalling ore = breaking it into smaller pieces) and armored warfare.
    The ethymology of "splashing" reminisce about something liquid. As in, splashing canvas with paint.

    So, random thought: What about homemade composite armor? Take a 1/2" deep steel cooking tray, fill it with 5-10mm alumina polishing balls, then fill the remaining air inside it with molten aluminum (or a structurally sound bismuth-tin mix, if you don't have a forge setup, though it's more expensive and heavy than aluminum and all) Keeping the alumina in with say, chickenwire fencing or a screen clipped to the sides of the cooking tray while the molten metal fills it, then after the metal hardens coat the surface with spray-on bedliner. Should be less than $100 total for the materials, and it would be interesting to see how it would hold up vs rifle rounds. (given the principle should be similar to that used in some composite tank armors)

    • @thefirstprimariscatosicari6870

      Composite armour is not that effective against kinetic rounds at low volumes. It's instead extremely effective against chemical rounds.

    • @SCComega
      @SCComega 6 років тому

      True, however I'm still curious how it might perform, given the hardness of alumina and all.
      Furthermore, it would be a higher volume plate vs most level 3 AR500 armors, at about double the overall thickness, (steel backing plus a half inch of materials) if it's using 5mm alumina material it should stack to three-four layers in the tray, plus the metal between, should lead to both round deformation and friction breaking)

    spalling is when the opposite side of a plate from the impact point fragments due to the impact on the other side. For example in ww1 tank crews wore chain mail masks because even though rifle bullets couldn't penetrate the armor, the brittle steel plate used would send metal splinters into the fighting compartment when impacted on the outside by a high velocity projectile. The interiors of some more recent tanks are lined with kevlar to prevent this.

    I wonder if this stuff could be improved for anti-spalling by using fiberglass cloth or some other such strong woven material...
    Steel > FlexSeal > Fiberglass cloth pressed into wet FS > 3 layers of FlexSeal > Fiberglass cloth pressed into wet FS > final FS layer
    If the FS had a way of keeping itself together better, it might result in better fragment control... And just because the fragments didn't fly at a 90-degree angle in these specific examples, it doesn't mean 100% won't, and doesn't mean these fragments aren't still dangerous to the wearer... This is the nice thing about having plates in a plate carrier; the carrier fabric itself catches much of what the anti-spalling material doesn't.

  • @clintcarpentier2424
    @clintcarpentier2424 4 місяці тому

    Roughing the plate up first will definitely help. After that, rather than floating a thick layer on, try this. Scrape a thin layer on first; this will force a bond about as well as you can get. Then you can float it thick.
    Another thing you can try, is run down to the hardware store, you'll find notched trowels. First do the flat scrape mentioned above, let dry. Use the notched trowel to draw thick lines over it, let dry. Then layer a smoothing coat into it.
    Lastly, the cardboard on one side is a difficult metric. Put the plate inside a box, so you can see how the rounds splatter, up sides and down. The bricks and plate won't let the box get away and collect collateral damage.

    One thing about using these flexible coatings is that they don't fracture like paint does. The coating is stronger that it will peel off the substrate. The bond between the coating is stronger than the bond to the substrate. So having a rough surface improves the grip the coating has to the substrate. The video shows sections of the coating holding together even though it has lifted from the steel.

    Glad someone tested this. I was curious about it, too. I do have a suggestion if you're willing to try. Like you said, rough up surface with burgundy scotchbrite or 320 sand paper and clean it with degreaser. But, mix a good amount of sand in with the flex seal as an aggregate. Then, of course, shoot that b**** with a 12ga slug!

    I like this video. I do agree with you about prepping first. More layers, definitely. Scoring the steel surface to increase adhesion, definitely. But you also need to wrap the material around the edge. The shots close to the sides lifted the flex seal completely and didn't give a full picture of possibilities.

    I shot hand guns competitively for years. Montrose Colorado used to have a competition called the "Steel Challenge" where you faced off against an opponent and had to drop steel plates. First to the stop plate dropping won. I carried my chair, gun bag and ammo in a little red wagon like kids use. At the end of a day of shooting it would have a LOT of lead and copper fragments in it. And it was sitting WAY back from the targets/firing line. During practive once one of my 45 cal, 230 grain round nose all lead bullets splattered against the plate, bounce back and a dime to nickle sized flat piece of lead struck my buddies wife in the front of the calf. Just hit flat and stuck there. We pulled it off. Slight burn from the heat and painful but she was still able to compete. Lead hitting steel isn't safe at close distance (up to 20+feet even). I'm thinkng the cloth/other material of the plate carriers help mitigate the splatter. Love to see a video on that.

Also would have been great to have one more piece of sheetrock one the top of the plate to mimic a chin. I suspect if you placed just two layers of kevlar with your flex seal you would achieve the results you want. I would recommend sanding or grinding the ar plate to give the flex sewl something to grab onto.

    Small correction for the OG, you are right they do use truck bed liner like Line-X to catch bullet fragments, but it's not at all like flex-seal.
    Line-X is a poly-urea, and the material has very long chains of molecules in a tangled up spaghetti-like structure. It's extremely strong, and has extremely high tensile strength. If you had coated the front of the AR500 with 1/4" of Line-X, the bullet would penetrate it, fragment on the steel, and the fragments would be completely held in the lining material, creating a small bulge. From the front there would be a single point of impact and no visible splatter at all. They use the stuff to line the Pentagon walls so that if a bomb explodes outside it will stop shrapnel from penetrating inside.
    Flex seal is made of asphalt and rubber and petroleum plus other adhesives and proprietary chemicals. It may be an excellent sealant, and have very good bonding, but it doesn't have any tensile strength to slow down and catch the fragments.
    For the record you cold probably find an auto shop near you that can coat Line-X on your AR500. Putting 1/4" on it shouldn't cost you more than 40$-50$..

    He used cork, I'm guessing about 4mm thick. If I remember correctly he may have used a adhesive to attach the cork to the steel plate before he covered it with the bed liner.I believe the bed liner was also alot thicker.

    The coating they use in AR500 and similar coating are basically the melted polyurethane spray on bed line like line-X. It has strands like fiber glass or kevlar. It's basically like spraying the plate with melted skate board tires that has strand of material for added strength and to tangle with the shrapnel. Those acetone melted canned bed liner and under body coatings just aren't hard or strong enough and they lack the webbing like fiber matte that is blended into the polymer coatings. I have a set of plain steel AR500 plates and I epoxied soft body armor to it to act as a net to tangle up the shrapnel. It works great btw
