- drivencarreview... Toyota is aiming the new Prius c at buyers who have always wanted to go green but lacked the green to do it. Tom Voelk travels to the San Diego press launch to check out the newest and smallest member of the Prius family.
I bought the Prius C a couple days ago and driving is Fun again! Incredible how you can save so much gas by running around on the electric Motor. Other cars are burning gas stopping at a red light. Not the Prius! When you come to a complete stop, there is
no engine turning, no motor warming up. Depending on your driving skills, if you are very conservative, you can edge up to 80 mpg or even more! I love this car and
can't wait to have a reason to jump into it and drive around town!!!
The more I read about this car, the more I'm impressed with it. Serious mileage for the price. I predict to see them everywhere soon.
Finally, a Prius that actually looks good
I'm browsing around to buy my first car and I'm really considering this. This video is really informative.
@JAYFROMHARLEM - It doesn't work that way. The battery pack can only supply 26 HP worth of power. So when the engine is at full throttle, you can only add 26HP. Remember that in the Prius the gas engine is also turning a generator and part of that power goes to the drive motor. That is why the drive motor is 60 HP.
Thanks! I'm in love with it from now. But have to wait for consumer reviews.
@JAYFROMHARLEM One does not simply add horsepower. Because the petrol engine and the electric motor produce their maximum HP and torque at different RPMs, the maximum combined power output is only 99.
@PassionOfTheMan Not $1,000 but it is less. With destination the Insight is $19,120.
I love the sound it makes in EV Mode, it's great
I think this car looks great, drives great and is overall clean, regardless of the price which to me is just a added bonus.
Not only economical and fun but on the 2019 most reliable cars and SUV video it is the second most reliable model over 6 years on the market without one hybrid system or battery breakdown reported. I have the 2013 Aqua and it has been great for my daily commute and handles nicer than the Prius S Ihad before it.
I bought a Prius c four a few months ago. The acceleration is weak and the engine really sounds like it's struggling when you need speed. It also doesn't like bumpy roads either.
That said, I'm loving the average 52 mpg combined city/freeway I'm getting, and usually only need gas every other week. It does go down in colder weather though, so keep that in mind. No belts in the engine hopefully means less maintenance costs down the road as well.
just test drove this car today, the car drives very nicely in the city. handling is tight and actually pretty responsive. suspension is on the firm side and the pick-up is also surprisingly decent for only having 99hp. i haven't driven on the freeway but i think it will do fine... the car only weighs around 2400# but it doesn't feel light at all on the contrary it feels weighty & grounded, this car is perfect for daily commuting and running errands around town. my personal grade is A minus.
Why don't they mention that the Prius C wildly EXCEEDS the EPA numbers while all the rest fall short. Perhaps no one in America has done as much research into this as I have. 349 days ago I purchased a new 2012 Prius C. It is BY FAR the greatest car I've ever owned. Possibly the greatest machine ever crafted by the hand of man, aside from the Saturn 5 rocket. This car is everything the talking head say it is, excapt wildly more fuel efficient. Love this car! GET ONE!
@RandomIsGood1 There is no such thing as a mild hybrid. The Honda system is a Parallel Hybrid, the Prius is a Combined Hybrid, and the Volt is a Series Hybrid. Those are the three types correctly stated. Just for your information. Each system has its own benefits.
Prius owner here -- aggressive driving gets me 48-49MPG vs my normal of 50-52MPG. Unless you have a really extreme form of driving, I can't imagine you getting any less than 45MPG.
If you want fuel economy, the Prius will give it to you. Regardless of your driving style or where you drive (city or highway), you're going to get better MPG in the Prius than any other car.
the 2011-present Toyota Prius c is assembled in
Toyota Aqua (Japan)
@lvrboi86 A excellent question (that I don't know the answer to). I was just talking to a friend about the next time I get a hybrid, one test will be doing my best to get the worst possible mileage. I'll have Evil Twin to do that part...
Bought one around the new year. Main complaint so far is blind spot created by rear view mirror and passenger side pillar while looking forward through windshield. Takes some getting used to.
looks like they tooks some cues from the ford fiesta, honda insight, chevrolet sonic, mini cooper, and etc. It looks pretty neat!
make sure when you buy one you choose a metallic paint . toyota uses a one step process in non metallic paints.they are repainting my 2011 white sienna..
the imperial gallon used in europe is 20 percent larger than the US gallon so 50 mpg in europe gallons is about 40 mpg us gallons.
It is not the first hybrid on sale for under $20,000 The Honda Insight took that claim. I get 50 to 55mpg with my 2010 Insight during the summer and about 45 average during the cold Minnesota winter.
@xacuraxx same goes for any hybrid...both engines can't operate at maximum efficiency at the same time so 99 is the combined maximum horsepower it can achieve
Man the car is not the nicest mooking but the damn mpg is so tempting
i'm a performance type of of guy, but this little car isn't half bad. If only they offered a manual like the crz...I'd happily give up a few mpg for some more fun
My typical commute is about a 20 minute highway drive, the fact that it gets over 50 city and only 45 highway is a huge minus for me. I might as well get an elantra that is much nicer looking and comfortable ride for 40 highway driving.
@krirks Slightly, yes
The interior changes are interesting. I thought the joystick gave the Prius a really futuristic feeling, but the improved MFD, dash, and Entunes is really nice. I'm rather annoyed the proximity notification system is in there, but I guess Toyota didn't have much of a choice.
Overall, I'm looking forward to this.
You say "c is for city" but would this still be a good car for 5-6 hour trips?
clownfish710 I’ve driven mine from LA to Albuquerque on several trips and it’s a very good trip car but I don’t recommend having more than 3 other people in the car cause it will get uncomfortable
@XXXCompAssesXXX it was the first production hybrid suv and I believe the first american hybrid but the prius came out in 2000
The 2 litre is great then. But you will have more mileage with a Prius but with significantly less power. Something to consider, when you drive on normal roads and the battery runs out, the engine is rather weak so being bogged down could be a problem, especially on hills. Otherwise go for the Prius :-) It's a shame your diesel is so expensive tho.
I think this will car helps change the goofy Prius for the better.. I'm impressed.
I always wondered if they just used the Atkinson cycle engine alone without the electric motor, would it have yielded the same mileage?
It stands to reason to me that the electric motor only adds 1 or 2 mpg to the already efficient Atkinson cycle engine by keeping it at an optimal rpm (back and forth conversion between kinetic and electrical energy in the Synergy drive would also yield losses) and maybe another 5-6 mpg for regen braking alone.
i love my prius c four with all the options is the best car
My family have a Prius C, and its awesome!! I just love the car. It great for the environment. Everyone should start buying hybrids or electric cars!
Do you still have it ?
I love my 2017 Prius , I boughtit used with 10,400 miles on it ....(I just love it )
I am fixing to own one myself! Lost my Santa Fe in a car accident, so big change.
@JAYFROMHARLEM It's different. I thought the same thing when I first started studying hybrids years ago. However, in the world of Hybrid Synergy Drive, total system output is 99 for the Prius C.
Which might not sound like a lot, but the Gen.I Prius had only 98 peak HP and after driving one around West Virginia for years until I got my Gen.II, it proved to not be a problem at all. I can do 85+mph all day long.
nice looking little car , offer it with a turbo diesel and sport suspension please .. very nice looking body design ...
@DJTEVAdotCOM The CRZ by Honda is pretty cool looking, but it's only a two seater. I seriously considered trading my civic for it, but I don't want to lose room for passngers so I will be getting the Prius C once they sell enough of the "first batch".
@shanelpn 9.5 gallons
@PassionOfTheMan
The Insight is cheaper, but even as a Honda fan, it's safe to say that Honda's IMA hybrid system is by far inferior to Toyota's hybrid synergy drive. The Prius C gets 12 more mpg in the city! That's huge.
I know it's a bad impersonation, but isn't the Honda Insight hybrid still $1,000 cheaper than this? Just thought I'd mention it since Mr. Toyota kept insisting "this is the lowest cost hybrid".
Wow, it looks like a Hot Hatch. They should use that body, and make an engine to compete with cars like the Golf GTI... Just for the younger crowd
If you have a bit of a heavy foot, it's probably better to get a Polo tdi, because to get low mileage on a hybrid you really have to pussyfoot it. I managed 5.2 l/100km in an Audi A1 tdi on the german autobahn cruising at around 140/150 kmph (4 hour 30 min drive)
Made me look. I never did that before with a hybrid.
and not to mention a tdi automatic is going to cost more and diesel cost more and then you will average like 8-10 mpg less
I. Am. Fucking sold.
My friend always brags about his sporty 400hp car but that's not for me. This prius right here is maa shit! Nice interior, great features, and fuel efficient as fuck! Who needs power when you can cruise the city aaaall day!
at 0:52 he said it's the FIRST hybrid for less than $20k even though it's the SECOND!...the honda insight was the first, even if it is a mild hybrid
Great review, and not a bad looking car in my opinion.
Looks like a success.
This is a fantastic car; great job Toyota!
the wheel looks very tiny. is that a 15 incher? if it's only 15 incher than how is the suspension?
@JAYFROMHARLEM But it isn't. It's 99 horsepower. Really. Honest.
@DrivenCarReviews wow cheap to fill up, i have a 18 gallon tank now !
I giving it a year..hopefully they will redesign. As much as I don't care for the design or the ugly interior, I do drive more than the average people around town. I guess I can cover the seats with nicer ones and among other things for the shortcoming.
@ 58 seconds, it is the second vehicle to go on sale for less than 20,000 grand. the honda insight is first
It seems nice.
This car is a great deal!
??? Is it me or I thought he said it had a, 1.5 liter IL4 73HP and a 60HP electric motor adding up to a total of 99HP.... 73+60=133... Not 99HP.......
Aaron mcClintock you don’t add them. You blend them.
what neighborhoods in san diego was this video shot?
@oshkosh757 True, and I have a friend who has an old Insight and she loves it, BUT the old insight was only a TWO seater! So it was a car for the truly anti-social person. Heaven forbid you have to give more than one person a ride, and don't have groceries on top of that. And the new Insight does not come with features like a sunroof, which I am use to having. I just paid off my 2007 Civic and am seriously considering the Prius C next!
Can you please do a review of the LEXUS CT200h!!!!
I'm guessing today's DrivenCarReview was brought to us by the letter "C"?
46 MPG at 18k......you can hardly beat that.
what's the torque numbers?
pretty good...
Too bad the Insight doesn't come with as many goodies!
Tom, what size is the gas tank??
73HP Plus 60HP... Should be 133HP right!!
People who hate the prius are just mad that they spent $100 a week filling up their big SUV or something!
Hybrid Components = 8 year 100,000 mile warranty, no worries there!
53mpg City vs 30mpg City on Golf TDI?
67mpg HW vs 42mpg WH on Golf TDI?
Prius C combined 50mpg vs 36mpg Golf TDI?
More economical? How is that exactly with those #'s?
Higher resale value? Since when do Toyota's not hold their value?
The only comparably equipped Golf 4-Door TDI with Technology Package has an MSRP that is $5,360 HIGHER than the Prius C Four.
Golf TDI is great car, but more economical? I don't think so...
don't worry, i ve already converted those figures into us gallon. just for you guys to understand...
@carguy379 whoops forgot to put the escape came out in 04 as an 05 model
Great video. Very informative. Tanks!!
Rear drum brakes?! Are you kidding me Toyota?!
I want this
how is 73HP + 60HP = 99HP?
Excelente, SUPER!
Toyota es Japón
Golf is MSRP is more expensive and diesel fuel is more expensive, not to say maintenance on a VW. How can a golf be more economical than a Prius C? Don't think so. Diesel prices are way expensive as well.
sorry for the late reply but I MIGHT have an answer to your question... Check out: top gear bmw m3 vs toyota prius. You'll see what I mean. If you're heave footed I would just go for a Honda Fit personally
the Honda insight is 18k!!!
Hope it is better quality than my 2011 Sienna that Toyota will repaint and change out the seats .. terrible !
price point is the average price of the class of car,for example, 17-22grand, Not an exact price.because you will never be able to use an exact.
the old ford escortsand mercury tracers had about 88hp and weighed 2500 pounds and were sllllllllllllllllllllow. i dont know what being new and having an extra 12 hp while weighing 100 pounds less will do. i like the look but im scared of performance
How bout beefing up the styling and making a cuv that gets 50mpg. I would be all over it. If it gets 50mpg but its slow thats a trade off i could live with. Anything less than 50mpg it better have some get up and go.
I love this car, But I'm poor. So i think i just stick with a bus pass.
Este auto es muy comercial en Ecuador....
You must get the Golf? But surely the Jetta, but that would have a 2.0tdi. VW made the American Jetta more affordable for the American market. But ya with expensive diesel, you guys are a bit screwed. It's a shame really, cos diesels put out a lot more power than hybrids for the same mpg... Good luck!
Very nice car to me
Unlimited Date plan from AT&T
toyota should really scrap almost all the other models and just make pure hybrid models left and right
Not that economical? Forget official figures- this car, [called a Yaris in Europe], has been independantly tested by car magazines and proven to be capable of bettering Toyota's official figures. Prius 1st and 2nd generation are getting 300,000 miles plus on the original battery & drivetrain. Why not test drive one and find out how good this car is? I did. I take delivery end of November and can't wait to get rid of the stench of diesel and the bucket full of nails rattling under the hood.
64 mpg thats so good i get 16 mpg average
golf is a compact, prius c is subcompact. mordern diesel engine is very expensive to build. so a golf is more expensive.
golf tdi has much better performance than prius c:0-60 7.9s vs 11s. toyota does hold it's value while the resale. but hybrids don't. a prius is not a corolla. just make a simple search on the net... and diesel cars hold their value even with high mileage.
that's why toyota offers a very long warranty... and in europe, a golf 1.6 tdi can offer the same performance and MPG..
Great car
awesome car
I may want this car :)
Imagine a prius pickup
