Prius v Wagon - Used Car Reviews

  • The Prius V is a good choice for families who need more room in their car than the standard Prius but without having to sacrifice the gas mileage. The wagon is an excellent choice in a used car. All the proven technology that shows up that has made Prius the shining example of what constitutes a high quality hybrid remains. Same engine and powertrain with a few noticeable improvements.

It’s truly a remarkable car. I never knew how reliable the Prius was until I got one. I got a 2013 Prius V two. I’m constantly blown away how comfortable the car is to sit in and drive; especially after sitting in other cars, even luxury cars. My family are always blown away by how much room it has, how comfortable it is, and my mpg numbers. Throughout the year, even in the coldest of New England winters, I still get around 44-55 with mostly highway driving. I haven’t had the car long, going on 2 years and I’ve had zero issues. Just kept up with my scheduled maintenance. I got it at 78 thousand miles and now I’m near 113,000 thousand miles. Most of my trips for work are over 600+ miles a week. Even with that, I still save a ton on fill ups. Road trips are a blast with how much stuff can be packed into the trunk. My family often falls asleep during the trips, especially with the rear reclining seats. Went on a road trip last weekend, car fully loaded in the trunk with 5 suitcases/luggage bags, and others bags of personal items and still had plenty of room left over. Had 3 adults and two kids during the trip with no complaints, just a relaxing trip. What really comes in handy is the charging outlet in the trunk, had a long cell phone charging cable extend out to the rear passengers, everyone was able to keep their phones charged during the trip. Such a wonderful car all around!
I’ll never understand why Toyota didn’t advertise this model of Prius. If they did, I think they would of sold well enough to where they’d still be continuing to make them. Every time someone at work or a friend sees my car, they’ll often say “that’s a Prius? It’s so roomy!” Most common thing I’d hear from people is the lack of room in the regular Prius. Hence why so many people I know go for SUVs all while complaining about gas mileage. While SUVs have the AWD advantage, it’s not often the people I know really use it. Most of them only see grocery store parking lots and driveways.

I get the same "that's a Prius?"reaction from people. Even a neighbor who has a gen 2 Pruis didn't know the V existed. I don't know why they didn't catch on. I guess they were too wagon-y for this SUV world.

Tacoma98 I like the gen2 Pri. If the V wasn’t available at the time I got it, I would of went with the Gen2. The gen3 feels more closed in with the floating center console. Makes no sense to me. But you’re right, American is dominated by SUVs. I don’t understand it because families with 3 or more kids would benefit more from a minivan with more room and better mpg. Any family that has less than 3 kids don’t need anything bigger than a sedan or a wagon. Remember the days when we were kids, families would pack up the family station wagon and go on road trips? I feel like that magic is long gone. I still believe though if Toyota marketed the V, it would of been more successful.

Finally. A good and accurate review of the Prius V.
I purchased mine about 9 months ago at 32,000 miles.
I am very pleased with the car.
I wanted a Prius for the high MPG and specifically a V model for the room. No disappointments there.
I would like to add a little to your review by saying the PWR mode button is a lot like a turbo button.
The PWR button doesn't add just a little more pep. It adds a lot of pep.
Don't let anyone tell you this car is sluggish.

I owned a 2005 Pruis. My ex tried to drive it like at UPS truck. Jamming on the gas pedal followed by standing on the break. The gas pedal has a delay if you step on it hard. If you give it a little promt allow the car to catch up then apply more pressure it takes off. I've out powered a few trucks trying to play with me on the freeway. My ex still has the car well actually it's his ex girlfriend who has it. He went through breaks. I dove over 150,000 miles without one before he got hold of it. I'm trying to find a V model it's not easy even with the converters being stolen off of them.

david winters you should join the priuschat forum. There is people who have well over 300,000-400,000 miles on the original battery with no issues. Only regular scheduled maintenance. There is a couple people on that forum who’ve hit 600,000 miles with their V models. I’ve got a 13 as well. I’m only at 113,000 miles, I’ve had no issues. You’ll find the most common answer to keeping your original battery to last long is driving the car daily. The constant discharge and recharge cycles the battery goes through is best way to extend its life. If you ever have to replace the hybrid battery, there is two shops online that will come straight to your door and install a new battery for under $2,000 and that’s labor included with a 5 year warranty. Greenbean is one I’d recommend and the other is priusking. You can find them doing a google search.

@@davidwinters8659 there are many being used as cabs in Seattle Tacoma area. They are always on and many have 450,000 miles and going strong. Watch your oil and water pumps. Air in the tires really matters as well. Just a few pounds off will affect mileage. Toyota had a recall on one of the water pumps. Make sure it's been looked at. Had them change out the second one while they swapped out the one covered by the recall. Also they have water leak issues. My 2008 had water that collected in the battery bay. Had about 6 inches in there. It was from the frame welding. Some silicone will stop it. That's all the little and big issues I know about. It's the best car for safety and reliability. Everyone should get a Cadillac converter shield. Pruis is a popular choice for addicts to steal.

The 2015 V was made super ugly by adding space to the front end. I bet that killed the V. Luckily, I bought a 2012 V but all the 2010-2012 Priuses have weak head gaskets, and all the 3rd and 4th Gen Priuses have that poorly designed electric water pump with the plastic rimmed impeller that cracks and jams. Very poor design. You really need a temp gauge on the 2010 up because by the time the check engine light comes on, you are walking. The 2010 up also has a pesky EGR valve that clogs and is hard to service. That's why the Gen 2 is the simplest and most dependable Prius.

So what's the best year for the V model?

    • @amazoidal
      @amazoidal 3 роки тому +1

2013, 2014 only. Better head gaskets and prettier front end. But you still have the GEN 3 problems. Change out the water pump at 100k. Maybe clean the EGR valve/cooler and replace the PCV valve. Change coolant. A new thermostat would be a good move. Spark plugs. Overheating due to that water pump failing is GEN 3's Achilles Heel. Search You Tube for "Gasket Masters". They do GEN 3 head gaskets all day long.

I had a blown head gasket at 167k, replaced the head gasket for 800, Still love the prius V, checked a lot of cars and nothing can replace it basically. Short exterior and huge cargo space, legroom. easy to fit in my dual car garage . All these SUV with big cargo space now days are pretty huge. and I don't want a huge SUV in my garage.

I'm sure I'll get used to it but it's disorienting when I I have to back out if my driveway on to a sometimes busy street.
