  • Hi Guys! Today I am reviewing the 72 set of the Derwent pastel pencils.
    These are fantastic pastel pencils and I really enjoyed using them especially on sanded paper.

    I’ve been using these for a long time as a detail tool for soft pastels or by themselves as a sketching and drawing tool. I love them. They are a hard pastel so not creamy, but the really do the job.

    Wonderful review! I don’t think I have ever made a pencil only drawing/painting! I use my pencils for details in my soft pastel paintings. I use them to start my pastel artworks, sketching out my outlines when I don’t have any nupastels for blocking in my color areas or just don’t want to go that route! I do like your apples it is comforting to create an easier composition that we are familiar with and come easily to our hands and brain! I like to use new art supplies and the first thing I make is a tulip drawing or painting! Thank you for your review and opinions on the Derwent pencils.

      Same I don’t really do all pastel pencil drawings. At the very least it’s with other pastels put I often use some other mediums with it as well. It was kind of a challenge only using the pencils and I had to be more patient when building up the layers of color and filing in large areas. I am glad you like the apples. A tulip is a great idea for a drawing/painting when trying out a new supply. I will have to try that some time.

    Thank you for your video on these pastel pencils. I have found that when you receive new pencils that there is a coating on them so sharpen them first. The feel and color of the pencils will change once you sharpen the pencils and remove the coating.

    Brilliant review and covered everything I’m currently wanting to know! I’m just starting out and bought the 72 set. Most of the other tutorials just covered using these pastels on sanded paper but I’ve already started a piece on watercolour paper and was having issues with the blending and texture of the paper. Now I know it’s not my application and more to do with the paper… thank you 😀

    Hi Lauren, the Caran D’ache and other soft pastel pencils are really easy to sharpen with the Dahl 133, without breaking the pencils.

    This is a great review Lauren! I have so many Derwent sets….besides pencil quality, I like the feel of their pencil barrels in my hand (is that weird?).

    • @LaurenWatkinsArt
      @LaurenWatkinsArt  3 роки тому

      Thanks! Not weird at all! I like the weight and thickness of them. I didn’t get hand fatigue from them where as some of my other pencils that are really thin hurt my hands after a while.

    Thank you for the review, Lauren. I’m in the middle of a piece with pastel pencils right now. The only pencils I have are the CarbOthello’s. I’m really struggling with the color range it offers in my set and I’ve been considering buying more with a much larger color range. I love that these come in a 72 set. I was especially wanting more pinks because I love florals. You talked about the purples, but how are the pinks?

    • @LaurenWatkinsArt
      @LaurenWatkinsArt  3 роки тому +2

      It has a great pink selection! It’s weak in the strong vibrant red tones but if you have the Carbothello set you would be covered.

      How is the lightfastness? So far I have been disappointed with the lightfastness of even the Pitt pastels and Carbothellos even though I have both sets I would have been more selective including with the few Caran de’ache ones. Over all though the Caran ‘de ache pinks and reds, blues and purples have been more lightfast if that is a concern. It was weird that even some ochre colors in the Pitt and Carbothello were not lightfast so I would assume that since the Derwent palette leans to the cooler colors that there might be a concern there also. I wish that they would make a lightfast brand like they did with colored pencils. They figured out the pigments so they could do it now if they wanted to.

    What are the lightfast ratings? That's critical information.

      @@LaurenWatkinsArt I never knew until last night I was excitedly telling a few people online & then my partner & he smiled & said yes that’s what my Mum did. I tried to tell him he must be wrong but he laughed & said he couldn’t believe I didn’t know & turns out he was right ! How weird but I’m glad I found out now & still have my childhood set, so loads of experimenting & fun coming my way 😄! Thank you for telling me as I did think last night that it was derwent pastels only that worked with water 🤣😂 ! I have found you videos now though so I will enjoying watching them 👍🏼.

    Thank you Laureen.This was so was very helpful. I find that the Pastel paper to be very costly, like Clairfountaine. It was a very good result your the apple and the beautiful flower artworks. I got plenty of cold pressed watercolor pads of the Arches brand. If I buy Clairefontaine : No.4 : Pastel mat Pad : 18x24cm : 12 Sheets : 360gs, it costs $ 23,36 without the shipping cost and customs to Iceland. A beautiful velvet paper in the description and many pastel artist use and recommend. The sanded paper is very costly too.Some pastel artists state the the right paper is more important than the pastel colors. Is it possible like many pastel artists do diy sanded pasta and smear on the paper, or try to put a little water that mixes the colors well enough to the surface on the paper or mix the soft pastel with a small amount of leenseed oil. Sorry for my silly questions, i am not an artist. I am totally fascinated with your Pastel art and tutorials 🤩

    Enjoyed your review. I have just bought a set through Amazon Canada, and unfortunately every single one keeps breaking in the different sharpeners I have. This is my worst experience and I do believe the fault lies with Amazons negligent way in which they handle and ship them, in a thin bubble wrap envelop. Amazon replaced them free of charge but the new set does exactly the same thing. Too bad I am enjoying what little use I have of them. Has anyone else had this issue?

    • @LaurenWatkinsArt
      @LaurenWatkinsArt  2 роки тому

      I am so sorry you are having this issue with them. That is so frustrating! I had a similar issue with my caran D’Ache pencils. Have you tried using different sharpers? Some brands I have so better with electric and others do better with hand sharpening. I think I will have to use a razor blade with my caran D’ache ones.

      The core may be broken inside of the pencil and when sharpening it will break. It may not be the sharpener but the pencil. There is a serious problem with Amazon shipping art supplies like pencils just in plastic bags. How is that to protect the cores? I have to return a number of pencils from poor packaging.

  • @FolkinghamRob
    @FolkinghamRob 10 місяців тому

    I have this set - good colour BUT they break all the time, you need to use a craft knife to sharpen them - do not use a sharpener. I have the Derwent pastel sharpener and it still breaks the pastel
