This is what my Father keeps telling me, but I never understood what he meant by moving your mouth more. This is the perfect time to learn about this because recently I had joined a specific youth leadership team and I always feared that people could not fully understand what I was saying because I am to quiet or smudging my words together. Great stuff man! Very thankful to have found your channel 🙏

I used the same method as you when I practiced presentations in English during my early days: watching Disney channel (mostly), combined with imitating all the dialogues, sometimes acting in front of the mirror, or imagined being interviewed by someone on a certain subject. Imitation is the first step in learning anything, really. Another aspect that I think worth mentioning is that by leaving the TV/ radio on and not actively listening to it (while doing chores, for example), your subconscious still picks up a fair amount of how natives deliver their spoken language. This is inactive learning - just like how a child must be able to hear in order to learn how to speak in the first place.
One other thing that I did was learning rap songs. Yes, rap. Mostly Eminem, because I found his articulation the clearest. Once I've had enough habit of mouth movement from rapping, my accent came out more naturally. Rapping as cardio for your mouth muscles works wonder.

Wow, I was surprised when you said you are Teochew nang and also keeping your native language until now and Vietnamese as well. As you know Chinese people who are living in Vietnam, especially in Saigon, have not kept their own native language, they have changed to the Vietnamese language as their first language in recent years. I'm Hokkien nang, and English is my fourth language after Cantonese and Vietnamese. Love to watch your channel and the content you made, that's inspiring me!

@@edwardwong654 yeah, i do think so, in Vietnam, especially Saigon, Hokkien and Teochew people live in a separate district and they are able to speak fluently Cantonese as their second Chinese language, and Vietnamese language is the third, but the opposite for Cantonese people in Saigon, they don't want to communicate in Hokkein or Teochew language.

Thanks for pointing us the in right direction Vinh 🙂

I was born in Germany and spent the first 20 years of my life there. However, since my parents are turkish, I grew up speaking Turkish and learned German in kindergarten and school. Currently, I reside in Turkey, and I find myself struggling with effective communication in all three languages. While I learned english through interactions with strangers in video games and consuming english content in general, I consider myself lacking proficiency in all of these languages.
Now I'm faced with the dilemma of determining which language to prioritize. Although the decision ultimately depends on my personal goals, I must confess that I currently lack a clear direction or objective.
And yes, I used Chat GPT's help to write this text, which just proves my point once again. :')

To know 3 languages is a gift. I suggest start working on the language least easy for you. Your mental muscles will be in a constant workout and then the other languages will be a breeze. Also, whenever you do have kids ( my apologies if I'm assuming you don't!), make sure they learn all 3 languages before age 7. This is the golden age of linguistics and children pick up upto 6 languages in this age group. And the more languages learnt, the higher the IQ, no matter the age. So yes, please don't disregard any language you know as unimportant!

OMGGGG! This is something I have been struggling with. Even though, I have been working as an English teacher for like more than 3 years now and I am pretty confident about my speaking skills, but sometimes when I listen to the records of me speaking in English, I feel like I don't pronounce words clearly. And then I just get really frustrated and upset. And of course I always try my best to practice and improve my pronunciation every day obviously. But still I can't speak as clearly as I wanted or expected to. And I asked myself if it's because of my VIETNAMESE ACCENT or something.
And you know I've even had ambition to have American accent coz I love American accent.
But NOOO! It's not about the ACCENT you have. It's about your ARTICULATION.
"Your accent is never a problem. My goodness! Your accent is what makes you unique. It's what makes you flavor. It's what gives you character. Accent is never a problem. The problem doesn't lie with your accent. The problem lies with your ARTICULATION."
Omg! I stumbled upon your video while I was really struggling with my pronunciation.
Thank you so so much for sharing and giving me and others the INSIGHT into speaking English!!! This is probably one of the most enlightening things I've learnt since I started learning to speak English.

Thank you for your inspired words. This advice I've never heard before. Now I know that my Articulation is the barrier to my better life. I'm Vietnamese and living in Japan right now. I was thinking all the time that I don't have enough self skills of speaking Japanese. I barely speak Japanese. And if I speaking, I speak Japanese with my Vietnamese accent. Now I know where to improve my articulation. Thank you so much.

Hey Vinh, I’m not teow chew but I knew what u said! Haha!
Thanks for tips and this is very helpful.
In my humble opinion though, English is still your first language 😊First two were your mother tongue and dialect. English was your first language you actually learnt.
I am from Malaysia and English is my 3rd language. My mother tongue is Cantonese, first language (started at age 6) is Chinese/mandarin (went to Chinese school). Then the Malay language as national language and then English (started at age 8). It was all Chinese speaking at school and Cantonese at home and with friends. To be honest, as you grown up in Australia, English is basically your day to day language since primary school although you don’t speak at home. For me, I didn’t even need to speak English until I started to work and it was only minimal. I only started speaking English when I started to work in the UK.

That was rather good, and how I had to modify my regional accent when I went to a leading University - where I had imposter syndrome. Standing next to the choir every week and listening to how they 'exagerrated' their pro-nun-see-ay-shun really influenced me as often they sang veeerrrrryyyy slowly.
