    The absolute best tutorials for learning to ice skate. I am looking forward to more of your tutorials. I taught myself to skate on a frozen puddle in Maine, USA, with a .15 cent pair of secondhand skates. Just get out there and try it 😀, you will love the freedom ice skating brings 😀

    I am mainly an inline hockey skater due to no local ice, but I found over the years (on inlines), constant drilling 'figure of eights' for all turns, transitions and stops around two or three pucks, really improved my street skating, balance and ability! Chasing 'Green Biscuits around also seemed to make my skating smoother as you allow your core and reflex muscles control your movements whilst concentrting on the puck! Boring but after a couple of hundred times, the flow becomes smoother and skating more relaxed and seamless! Cheers for the vids, mate!!

    So the first time I really felt what it was like to do a tight power turn I was on some ice on a pond a week ago in late March. Since it was warm the ice was very soft, and my edges dug into the ice extra deep. What I took away from that was you really need to dig your edges into the ice, think of pressing down in your feet and making that crunching sound, especially with your outside edge (leading foot). It also helps to have sharp skates.
    Thanks again for the tutorial videos, just started playing pickup hockey this winter at 23 and they have been a valuable resource!

    This is a pure outside edge drill. Face in to the turn your body and your feet will follow. Look where your going. Skating is all practice after you learn the fundamentals of edges your eyes will open up. Confidence is power. Great tutorial

    showing some love from the Midwest of the US! It always helps me to also look into the direction of where i am turning and not looking straight. As your head turns your hips should also follow the direction followed by your feet. I am no pro but it works for me. Your videos are awesome. I know this video is old but keep up the great work!

    Thank you! This helps so much! We do so many drills using edges during practice and I have no idea how to do it. I really like how you kept saying you just really need to build up the confidence. It reassures me a lot. I also have a question. When doing tight turns, should I be applying more of my weight to my leading foot or my back foot?

    • @fate6535
      @fate6535 Рік тому

      its sort of a balancing act on both, but the more you get used to it the more balanced it will be. when I learned my weight was more in the back, because my inside edge was much more comfortable

    The best thing I've found for training your weak side is skating backwards. Specifically for crossovers it's exactly the same motion as if you're doing it forward and circling the opposite way. For clarity, a forward crossover skating counter clockwise is exactly the same motion as a backward crossover skating clockwise; and flipped, a forward crossover skating clockwise is the same motion as a backward crossover skating counter clockwise. Skating backwards also helps to even out the wear on your blades

    When doing the tight turn, how should the weight be distributed along the foot? Would your weight go towards your heel for the lead foot and the balls of your feet for your back foot? Also, do you distribute your weight evenly between the lead and back foot or are you supposed to put more weight on your back foot than the lead foot? Thanks! Your videos are great!

    Really helpful, I feel more confident just after watching this without going to the rink. One question: when stepping over to turn right for example, should I shift all my weight to the stepping foot ie my left foot? Thank you

    • @olherb9633
      @olherb9633 5 років тому +1

      Yes, for the most part but it's not all of your weight. I figured this out the other day by doing it stationary. Start in a slightly more than shoulder with stance, butt down knees bent chest up athletic stance. Roll your foot out gently, and as it starts to roll out step over with the other foot and place it next to but slightly in front of the other, then stop. Your body should mostly be over the leg you stepped over with and that leg should mostly be perpendicular to the ice. You'll feel what edges you should be on, where your weight should be and where your hips should be. Then just keep stepping over side to side and hold it each time. Then when you do it while moving, roll your ankle out sloowly as you step over, don't just flop it down. I noticed when it started to feel comfortable, i was starting almost on the middle of my blade, starting to roll my ankle out as I step over, and my ankle was become fully rolled out to that outside edge as my step over foot is landing on the inside edge and making it all one fluid motion.

  • @kokonanana1
    @kokonanana1 18 днів тому

    A deep knee bend helps. Try the crossover at home without skates. Concentrate on a deep, weight bearing bend in the following leg. This exercise will help to strengthen the weaker leg and make the crossover more fluid.

      Skate not supportive enough

    When making a tight turn: lead with your stick; then your head. Where the head leans, the torso follows. Yes-lead leg is the side of which your turning.
    For example: turning right-skating straightaway, whip your stick around your right side-followed closely by your head-scissor your legs, right leg in front; and lean in the direction that your stick & head whip momentum naturally pulls you. Be sure to bite that inside edge (left leg) into the ice as you wheel around.
    Repeat left side for left turn.
    Tip: your centre of gravity should be slightly ahead of your skates. If it’s slightly behind, ur buts gonna be on the ice.

      I roller blade and when I get on the ice it's much much much different, in roller blading your using friction and ice skating has almost no friction, but, I have experience backwards skating and crossing, but stop is different cause you extend your legs and use friction to stop and if you try that on ice you fall back and slide.

      Hey! I'm 30 and started roller- and ice-skating this year (and doing just fine), so it's never too late ;)

      Hey mate! I'm fifty tomorrow and played hockey twenty five years ago! Since then I've been street skating pretty much super regularly (at least four times a week) with inline hockey and it is the best sport I've done and so low impact as you get older (as opposed to running)! Really great form of excercise and I think I skate/ice skate better now than I did at 25 whilst playing hockey! Good on you, mate it's a great sport!! Keep skating!! UK : )

      I'm 20 and I'm looking into starting for adult beginner lessons after I get used to on the ice more. (Today marks my third time on the ice in my life, once when I was around 12/13 and the other time around last month) When I was little my parents never had the money for lessons for any kinds of activities (Horse back, Dance, etc. etc.). I was upset lately because I thought that it would be too late for whatever I want to start learning- then I read a motivational thing about adults taking figure skating lessons yesterday, and someone who was over 60 started taking lessons! Amazing, really. If they can do it then we can do it too!
      I wish you the best of luck and that you are able to start!
