Last week we took a road trip up to Classic Firearms in Monroe, NC to film the last shipment of Finnish M39 rifles that will soon be available for sale. Classic purchased a large private collection of nearly 14,000 rifles last year which represents likely the last remaining M39s on the market. After this last batch is sold, the only place to procure these fine firearms will be the open market at local gun shops, gun shows and through outlets like Gun Broker and the like. These rifles are highly underrated and rival the K31 in the accuracy department and are much more rare. Only around 102,000 of these rifles were ever produced, that's a ratio of 1:362 compared to the production of Russian M91/30s and 1:5 compared to the production of Swiss K31s.

Hi, a Finn gun nut here. Translations:
SA = Suomen Armeija = Finnish Army
Puolustusvoimat = Department of Defence
There's some Finnish commenting on this video. The guys are profaning humorously: "who the fuck sent our M39s to America?!?!". We love them, too. I think we still have plenty of them here. Please take good care of the M39s. Cheers.
at 9:30 the hang-tag translates to:
Gun:
Number: 26689 Caliber: 7.64
Taper: 0,02 Degree of corrosion: 1P2
Manufacturer/Repairer:
Inspector:
Date: 22.08.1979
Additional notes on the backside
I left stuff blank because the markings are so pale that I cant read them...
And the word at 10:30 "puollustuslaitos translates to "department of defence"
Btw, I'm a Finn and most words are pronounced just like they are written.
+Assassin Agent I think Syöp.aste comes from "syöpymis aste / corrosion state".
+Assassin Agent Syöp.aste. Syöpymis aste. "The degree of corrosion." If there's a number it tells how badly the barrel is damaged by rust.
Asko83 Kiitos avusta =D Muokkaanpä äkkiä...
Same in english for you other people: Thanks, I'll edit my comment.
+Assassin Agent Puolustuslaitos on yhdellä L:llä. Ja eikös SA oo Suomen armeija eli Finnish army.
+NearCry91 Translated from Finnish: Defense Department is one of L has. And is not it oo Finnish Finnish army or army.
I had 3 M39's stolen from my home around 10 years ago. Without a doubt, they were the most accurate surplus rifles I've ever shot. The barrels were pristine. Wish I had them back.
Thumbs up if you think Ian from Forgotten Weapons should pay a visit to these guys and give a master class on markings and variants. =)
God damn it Eric ive spent over 1000 dollars today on mil surp because of you...
+dragonslayer6766 🍻
+Iraqveteran8888 hey why is it that they arent shipping these to the us any more. i can never get a good answer. some people tell me that they stopped importing them bc of obamas exectutive order banning imports of russian firearms. is this the reason?
+mac andrews
Simple, theres no more left to import. Finland is a small country, they only made so many and havent made any since... The Russian ban only applies to Russia.
+dragonslayer6766 you are a lucky man, my friend
yup hand select M39, and a lithgow refurbished 1942 smle :)
When they said they got all of those guns that were left in Finland it was actually kind of sad. That's their history right there.
Haha hell no they got all of them
The tiger stripe looking stocks looks so awesome, I want one!
ShockAndAwe417 agreed it's great look. So natural
ShockAndAwe417 that is curly birch. Wood it self is quite rare.

4:00 JESUS THAT STRAIGHT STOCK M39 LOOKS AMAZING!!!
Makes me happy these historic guns get to be used again. Greets from finland.
They are a treasure for sure! Hard to find now a days
"Puolustuslaitos" is the old name for Finnish Defense Forces. The pronunciation is hard to explain as vocals sound different from what they are in English. The syllables are Puo-lus-tus-lai-tos. Easiest would be to break the word in to three parts, Puo-lustus-laitos and then trying to say them without breaks and you get pretty close to the correct spelling.
The tag seems to be an inspection report of some sort. My guess is that this is inspection before it was shipped out of the factory as the "Valmistanut / Korjannut" has the later part crossed over and it means repaired and the first one that is not crossed over is manufactured. The other side of the tag has the more specific notes of the inspection.
Bad language
Great video, IV8888. I have always liked Classic Firearms but I like them even more after watching the professionalism, honesty and genuine love for firearms that was represented in this video. Best of luck to the both of you.
Thank you to both the company and the usual guys. Great video. Thanks again.
The T is a test rifle that would be used to check the condition of the storage facility and of the guns
Best unboxing vid on youtube to date
+MisfitFourOne thanks! We can do more like this if you guys want to see it
+Iraqveteran8888 more un-boxings and more mil surps. I have been following classic firearms for a while and have bought a few. They do things many others can't buy acquiring these pieces of history
@@Iraqveteran8888 what would be a fair price for one .
@@Iraqveteran8888 how much would one in that box cost .the one he has in his hand is just plain beatiful .I sure would love to have one .will you be getting any at mosspawn shop.
I have met both Eric and Chad, and they are truly a couple of real southern gentlemen.
Way-to-go guys and kudos to Classic firearms! Great video!
That's right down the road for me. I need to make a stop in as well :D
dig another look into their dungeon of goodies . dig another vid man.
+Mrgunsngear Channel Same, I just don't have the money. -_-
PUOLUSTUSLAITOS roughly translates to "Defence administration", Puolustus= Defence, Laitos= Agency, Bureau or Facility
the boxed up [SA] marking stands for Suomen Armeija = Finnish Army, an old term from the finnish military before we coined it the FDF. The marking SA Int however stayed on army issue gear all the way to the early 1960s.
Dont ask me tips for pronounciation, all i can say is just pronounce it the way its written and youll do fine ;) No need to strech or bend anything.
Really entertaining and informative thanks for your time and efforts on this I really enjoyed watching this and I learned so much.
This wasn't a tour. This was a rare "unwrapping" video. Thanks for sharing!
Eric is just a straight up awesome down to earth cool human being. And Brandy is too. Love from the #AONfamily
+Brandon Bond thanks Brandon...would love to come swim in the dragons toilet sometime! Lol
+Iraqveteran8888 i am ordering a ugo SKS from them tomorrow by coincidence , if i had space in my safe i would get one of those, i might swap my ex sniper for one of those
I love it that he is not tacticool. Just a cool dude with a passion for things that go boom.
Eric please!!!!! Make a video of the surplus ammo test!!!
7.62x54r to be exact!
Another one that I'll be watching again later. Good vid guys.
Thanks for uploading... I was on the fence about buying one but this video + this being their last shipment made me order one just now. I'm looking forward to getting my rifle!
Hey Eric, how many crates of M39's did you go home with??
And VKT stands for Valtion Kivääritehdas (State Rifle Factory)
As a descendant of a Finnish immigrant I can say whole heartedly this is an awesome rifle RIP Grandma
+Charles Baker RIP Simo Hayha!
Damn it eric, i've wanted one of these for so long and i recently had a sixth sense to google search surplus websites. Opened a whole bunch of tabs, just browsing. Got to Classic's website and the front page was plastered with pics of these and big ass bold letters saying LAST BATCH. Needless to say, i flipped shit, made an account and had one in the cart in a heartbeat. However, i gave it a day to sit on my mind, just to see if i could afford it and make sure i wanted one. I got the notice on my phone when this video came out and all i could say was, "Son of a bitch...if i want one i better finish my order now before theyre sold out". Look what you made me do, eric, this is your fault...you made my mind up for me. I love you, you beautiful bastard.
+Jacob Goodwin you're welcome? 😇
On a random note I just found out those boxes are really called gaylords. I work in injection molding and everyone around my workplace calls them that. I always thought it was a joke or something. LOL. I guess not.
my grandfather gave me a m39 with the bayonet and the gun saw some combat because it was beaten and has tick marks on the stock
Thanks eric and ben what a treat great video guys
Beautiful rifles thank you for the video and thank you to Ben and his staff.
I wish I would have known about this. I would have snuck over from Fayetteville and watched the unboxing.
Fayettenam huh?
LOL.... Yes Sir..... Ole Fayettenam!!!!
Arkansas?
+Matthew Carter North Carolina
Guys, its Cyrillic (Ser-ill-ick). Not Krill-ick.
I like this video a lot, you guys are very professional and experienced in front of the camera.
(WOW NEVER SAW A SMILE THAT BIG ERIC YOU ARE TRULY A BLESSED MAN) them look great
For those who are wondering. Sako is pronounced the way he first says it when he's talking about pronouncation, or atleast if you are speaking finnish. It was actually quite spot on, very un-american finnish pronouncation.
Actually eric pronounces it very correctly also. Good job! You failed puolustuslaitos miserably tho.
The closest I can come up with on how to pronounce "puolustuslaitos" is poo-oh-loose-twos-lie-toss:
Also Sako is pronounced as Sa-ko (sa like in supple or Saiga), not Say-ko.
Nice in-depth video btw!
eric another great video,i drive a truck and every evening while on break I watch your videos over and oven.very well done as always.also I am a big customer of classic firearms.
Great video on awesome rifles! Thanks guys!
21 Russians disliked this video :D
I guess when you have the opportunity to use the word "Gaylord" without taking flak ,you take it.
+Snake Plissken wtf is it? the crate?
+Snake Plissken "In the U.S. and Canada, the term gaylord is sometimes used for triplewall corrugated pallet boxes; this is due to the first bulk bins being manufactured by the original Gaylord Container Company of St. Louis, which was acquired by Crown Zellerbach of San Francisco in 1955."
+Yeah Bee yes
My father's conscript military service rifle was the m39 type Finnish rifle. My dad was an anti-air gunner in the military, and Finnish army was too poor to give assault rifles to all the soldiers. My dad was young guy in the army in late 1960s. So, my dad was issued with the ww2-style m39 rifle.
That's kind of funny and sad at the same time. To consider that my dad's gun would have been that WW2 rifle during the hot days of the cold war. For example during "Prague spring crisis" in Europe, when the soviet tanks rolled into Prague to crush the uprisings. My dad in Finland was mobilized as a reservist to war readiness exercises in 1968. Good thing that nothing happened to Finland though...
Awesome! More surplus unboxing vids. So cool man.... So cool!
TORILLA TAVATAAN!! no but seriously, what about the Suomi KP-31???
It's too bad Clasic Arms is but a former shadow of what it was when the origional owner ran it years ago. They misrepresent their listings and over charge for garbage. The last batch of Finns they had were advertised as "excellent" and what customers received were broken, rusted, and in some cases unusable rifles.
Buy at your own risk....
Very cool insight Eric and a great opportunity. Thank you.
I love sifting through surplus too. WWII era stuff is drying up thats for sure!
Never ordered a gun online before, I should look into it....
Nice videos, always enjoy watching you Guys......
He sure does like saying gaylord alot lol
+Tommy TwoGun Heck Yeah
+Tommy TwoGun He's a funny focker
Its because hes a gay lord
Finland is one of the lost provinces of the Roman Empire.
+Dom Degood nobody talks about that these days. Good on you.
I got a 1942 VKT from the first batch. Its a beautiful rifle. Most of the first batch they received sold out in 15min - 1hr depending on the make and options. Classic firearms is a awesome place to order firearms from i have bought atleast 6 rifles i can think of, i would have to check my bound book for exact numbers.
I love surplus firearms. There is so much history. Plus I can get them shipped straight to my door with my C&R FFL.
Wow so many oldies but goodies there #IV8888 you are so lucky to inspect the last lot of M39, i want one so badly because its the last lot of M39 in the country as you said.
I had a bit difficulties clicking thumb up on this one, but I did. How did all these end up over seas, while there are not many available back here in Finland? Still good to see that M39's are valued over there too.
+jpenna1976 it's not our fault you guys decided to export them. They are awesome guns...I personally love them. I'm sure a lot of people here will agree with me
***** I know and I'm glad you like them. Who ever sold them, probably took easy way out and gave all remaining in a single purchase.
Take care of our military history, because we obviously can't. All remaining M31 Suomi smg's, which have been previously sold with light deactivation (bolt cut in angle, chamber drilled & welded and few holes in the barrel), will be welded so that nothing moves, barrels drilled, cut, welded from several places. This is due to recent EU deact directive change. I consider that all remaining value on those M31 is lost.
+jpenna1976 I just ordered one. I'm one of these people that considers myself the "temporary caretaker" of my things - that they'll end up in someone else's hands some day. The rifle will be treated with much respect - especially knowing the history I do of the Fins and how awesome you guys were in WW2!
carl23401 Lets hope you get a nice one. Those more worn out ones have probably been in conscript use and better ones are from war stock, stored in crates inside caves and tunnels somewhere.
It's a "hand-pick", so it shouldn't be too bad. Classic Firearms has a pretty good reputation. We'll see when it arrives.
It is hard for me to watch this as a finnish person
+jonimies295 why?
+Son of a Zombie It is sad to see that those beautifull finnish guns are not in Finland
+Son of a Zombie He prolly wants those rifles himself
+Son of a Zombie because a bunch of yankeedoodles have his countries rifles.
CookieTrooper HP YEAH!!!
I've ordered 11 guns from classic so far....my favorite online retailer by far. Iraqvet and Ben in the same vid !! I'm a happy camper
Great video. I picked up two of them last year in the initial and 2nd batch and love them. Great shooters. Buy one just to have one in your collection.
Don't email Eric crap about it. His wife does the emails and is a nice woman. :) They are some nice guns.
puolustus laitos= Department of defense
Greetings from Finland!, Great video as always.
Awesome video!
Got one of these and I was sorely disappointed. I was so hyped up, but for the first couple of batches, they were sold before I could fill out my info!
When I finally got mine, it had a big crack in the stock and rust. Classic Firearms said the M39s were in VERY GOOD/GOOD condition and mine was certainly not that. When I posted my review + video a few months ago, I said that perhaps they should the damaged ones for less and list them as FAIR. Strangely, I could not find my review afterwards. Was it an error, or was it deleted?
Now months later, they are offering rifles with cracked barrels and rust for 100 dollars less :(
+ClassicRockLivesOn You are not alone. They screwed a LOT of people over just like you got screwed. Gunboards has (had?) a huge thread where people were posting what they got from Classic, and they were sending out broken stocks and rusted rifles as hand select. Then the mods at gunboards tried to lock the thread and delete negative posts because Classic is a forum sponsor for them.
It was a huge scam, start to finish. And all the videos they have posted unboxing each batch of these rifles, they only show the best ones. Under those good ones are a lot of trash. Classic doesn't post negative reviews for the most part, so they have done a good job covering up the hand select scam on these rifles.
+ClassicRockLivesOn Oh, and the guy who wrote the very positive review at the bottom of their description page is a mod at gunboards, a forum sponsored by Classic. He wrote that review without seeing a single one of their rifles first (he admitted this). No conflict of interest there, huh?
What a mess. That place was crazy for a few weeks while the mods and Classic tried to do damage control. They managed to silence a lot of the complaints. Hopefully they learned to be more honest from that experience, but it was enough to keep me from ordering a single one of these from them, and they lost a lot of repeat customers, like me.
+ClassicRockLivesOn As a collector of Mosin Nagants, I can say you've fallen for the most common scam in buying them: buying a random one that you cannot look at or inspect beforehand from a bulk importer. Classic Firearms and Century Arms (through Cabella's) are the two most guilty of this. Classic Firearms expects you to pay extra for a "hand selected top condition" M39 that is actually a decrepit piece of shit that's been rotting outside of its cosmoline for years, and Century Arms just takes a random Soviet barrel, paints the stock (poorly, with varnish all over the metal) grabs a bolt out of a pile, and sells it at Cabella's where you're not allowed to touch it.
I'll buy Mosin Nagant's online if I find one that I feel is special (has rare marks on it such as Russian Empire stamps or Finnish captures of Soviet weapons), but I always make sure I at least have pictures I can look at. Bulk importers do not care what they sell you as long as you pay. That's why they're so cheap. Pay an extra 100 and buy from a collector-friendly firearms store, or on Gunbroker and ask all the questions you need to.
In fact, let me add this to my rant, it's outright dangerous to buy a Mosin Nagant without at least knowing if the firing pin is adjusted properly on the bolt. Some people have lost eyes and noses that way.
That being said, good luck shopping.
Cainus44
I thought this one was special because it was Sako, oh well.
On a slightly related (and equally disappointing) note, I found an absolutely beautiful Sako M39 at a LGS that caters more towards tactical stuff. It was actually cheaper than the one from Classic, and had the prettiest stock. The employee told me it had been sitting there for months, and that no one who came to the store bought "guns like that". I didn't have the money with me, so I came back three days later, and it was gone. The guy said they sold it the day before. The hunt continues.
ClassicRockLivesOn
Most M39s are Sakos, but the thing to remember is that all Finnish guns are of extremely high quality regardless of the brand, because Finnish gunsmiths at the time were among the most meticulous and and careful in the world. Finnish Mosin Nagants are special no matter what, but a special Finnish Mosin among Finnish Mosins is going to have special marks on the receiver. That's usually how I tell whether or not I'm interested in something. The receivers on Finnish and Soviet Mosin Nagants usually tell a unique story that allows you to trace the gun's history to a certain extent.
For instance my first Mosin Nagant was a Finnish Velmet M91. The serial number on it told me it came from an armoury in Karelia and the stamp on the receiver told me that it was made from a Belgian barrel that was cast in 1942, but not assembled until 1945, meaning it never saw action and was likely a reserve gun until it was imported by Georgia Arms (import mark beneath the muzzle). Approximately 5000 of those were made. The stock had an imprint of two cannons crossed on it, meaning it was of Finnish origin, as that's distinctly a Finnish stockmaker's mark. The tiniest little barrel shank mark had the distinct VKT on it meaning it was a Velmet. It still had cosmoline on it when I picked it up from Collector's Firearms in Houston, so I was likely the only owner, and by some miracle it came with the incredibly rare bayonet, which differs from the Soviet one in that it is issued with a scabbard.
You gotta look out for every detail on these guns, because every single one of them tells a story. Mosin Nagants are always covered in stamps and markings that allow you to uncover it. The meanings of these stamps and markings are easily available on the internet.
Let me do you a favour here. I know a guy who's selling his collection. He's an individual guy selling off tons of surplus rifles he owns. I haven't bought from him yet, but I've spoken to him online before. Seems legit. He still has some M39s left last I checked and they're in great condition for a fair price judging by the photos. Google search Manowar's military surplus. You might be able to get a good deal one.
SA = Suomen Armeija = Finnish Army
Received a Mosin 91/30 from CLASSIC FIREARMS ,great people to work with.A+ dealer.Nice video Eric and Ben.
I've spent some dough at Classic Firearms and I have to say they have not let me down! My first purchase from them were two hand select mosins, one a hex 91/30 laminated Hammer and sickle with big star, I think it's a Russian Tula, with black epoxy patched bullet strike to side right above magazine. I refinished the stock and left the patch, blueing was 98% blueing. The second one an M44 hex with laminated stock about 90% blueing, not sure of the origin. I bought a S&W M&P 40 Cal police buy back that doesn't even look to ever been holstered, $399. And a few months back when they had those gorgeous Yugoslavian SKS's, hand selected and let me say it looked to never been fired with one tiny dent on what looks to be a beautiful Walnut stock. These guys do their work and seem to really find some great stuff! I can't praise Classic Firearms enough!
Puolustuslaitos translates to "point the steel end east".
+piikkiniska Cheeky
why do they keep saying gaylord?
+Richard Marks There third wave feminists.
John McNamara ^ lol xD
gaylord is nothing more than a huge box shipment primarily used for transporting large quantities of items.
Richard Marks I thought someone would think that was funny!
Thats what the name of the giant box. Sounds weird ik. Used yo handle shit like that
Classic Firearms is one of my favorite gun stores, I've bought a few really nice guns from them.
I miss these days.
A lot has changed in just the last 5 years.
i feel sad that the guns that kept us independed agains russia... are so far from home... =(
Don't worry, we will give them lots of love!
i hope they last from generation to generation there and not be bashed etc
I got mine, and she's beautiful. I will definitely hand it down to the next generation if I ever have kids!

Awesome video guys thanks. These rifles have been available for years. I see them now and again at gun shows. I 've seen VKT Tikka and Sako. Great guns.
I MUST get one of those. The Finns were pluggin down the Russkies with those rifles as well as with Swedish Mausers in the winter war during WWII.
Word's fail me that place is Awesome hope they have a contest 4 some ! TY great work -Outstanding !!
Wow, cool! I got it off a auction site and just set my max bid high enough I was sure to get it. I was very surprised when it went almost all the way to my "fail safe" bid. I was very happy with its condition when I saw it.
Those paper 'tags' are armory gunsmiths "checklists", and have stuff like the depot where it was checked in, the gunsmiths initials, corrosion degrees, sight settings and such on them
I want a job doing these type of stuff, opening up surplus guns and keeping them maintain , life is good
Beautiful!
Kick ass video I want m39 in my collection good job.

I cannot stop drooling
Great Video, I am subscribed to both of You Guys. I have a Finnish M39 I bought from Pat Burns a few Years back. Mine would be lower grade, lots of wear, but I love it. A natural pointing good Shooting Rifle.
