- How to install the correct metal valve stems on the Ford Model A inner tubes! Model As had metal valve stems when they came new from the factory. Some of the metal valve stems are reproduced and still available from the Model A parts suppliers. This is the most requested video so far this year. Watch this video and prove my mom was wrong when she said I "never listen to anyone"! Who knows what she was saying half the time anyway.

It's really as easy as Paul showed us. I've had metal valve stems in my 1931 Tudor for 30 years and hardly ever have to air up the tires.
I have only had one metal stem tube with a slow leak. All the others never leak.
Well, I never would have thought to make a video on installing metal valve stems, but I have to admit that this was very informative. Great job Paul!
Since you mentioned it, I think I will go outside and take my Model A for a drive!
73 OM!!
Good! Drive it like you know how to fix it!!
I never knew that metal valve stems were thing! I learn something every time I watch one of your videos Paul!
Model As left the factory with metal valve stems. They look kinda neat. Generates questions from the public now and then, "Is that where the air goes?"
Well, you got me on this one, Paul. All new to me. Tubes were below my pay level. Now if it were a bicycle I did do burn on patches as a kid. 🤣
I remember the smell of those, even to this day. Never forget that.
I always thought it was more complicated! Thanks Paul!
Easy peezy, bud!
Model A tech questions works really well! I've used it a couple of times and you guys always get back to me really fast and the information is always good.
Yaaaay!!
Hey Paul, thanks for the great beauty on how to enjoy how easy you make things work. Say I am all for preventive maintenance so I was wondering what you recommend for how often miles or time should I go before I change the air in the tires 😉? Should I filter the air🧐?
God bless you and Tina.
See you down a country Road. Steve.
Everyone knows that filtered air needs to be changed every 3,000 miles. Unfiltered air ever 500 miles, of course. Hahahaa!
Cheers from Italy, Paul!😊
Cheers, my brother!!!
@@ModelA 🥹❤️
i have been watching all of your videos
Thank you. I hope they help you
@@ModelA ya they have been
I don't think there's anything that Paul couldn't fix a model way himself.
New cars we don't have a spare tire, and when you have a blowout it's on the side wall and can't be fixed with an air pump. Our modern technology.
I am puzzled why new cars don't come with spare tires. That is so bizarre!!!
Hi Paul! Another informative and educational video. Thanks! Going to check out those air pumps!
Sure makes roadside tire seminars easier
Thanks Paul for an another very informative video. You make it look so simple.
Did you use original or reproduction valve stems?
I have mostly original stems salvaged from old tubes. Some of my stems have been in 3 or 4 different tubes already. The one in this video was a repro.
Good video Paul! I have a Milwaukee model 2848-20 m18 inflator. Unfortunately, it won't work with the original Model A metal valve stems installed. With our one car it has rubber valve stems, and I can slightly bend the valve stem to fill them with air.
Thanks for the info. Didn't really think of that! Mine works on both kind of stems. I just got lucky!
I could have used that on many inner tubes through the years
For sure
Looks like there's a benefit of having the inner tube warmed from the sun to make that air valve plate go through that hole.
End result sure looks great.
Tina did a great job restoring the shine and paint on Gandalf. ~ Miles
Good tip! Wish I thought of that. Dang.
Perfect timing, I need to replace all my 31 A Delux Roadster tires and tubes. Where is the best place to order them? I prefer to stay with the Firestones.
The stems? Whoever has them right now. Many of the Model A parts suppliers are out right now. I get my tubes from Les Schwab. I insist on US made tubes now.
Neat, some more info I didn't know, it does help knowing these things and I'll check out the air compressor. Thanks Paul and God Bless you too!
Thanks Dan. May God Bless you
Hi Paul i'm José from south Brazil, i like so much yours videos.
But i don't get capture, the i think is sarcasm whem you say "my 10" wrench made in usa". Whay need to made in USA? (is for wrench size more good dimensioned) or is trully sarcasm /joke, with us in Brazil we had a long years a go "- the wrench make in Brazil brend by Tramontina is better than others (for many years is true kkk), but now the must of tools goes from China, and have good ones and bad others.
Thank you for our atension a put this question her and hope the you understand, my english worke in progress.
I tray to improved my english, try to write this coment with minimum intervention of google translate. Thank you.
Cheers from Brazil 😍 ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Paul, this on my todo list, with the new wire harness from last, turn signals, LED’s, and the list is growing. Question for you, on my 400A would you prefer the cowl lights for turn signals or the added bumper front and back? Thanks for all you do for the A’s, KY Ken.
Hey Ken!! If it already has cowl lights, I prefer those. At least from a visibility point of view.
@@ModelA Thank you Paul, that’s what I thought too, I’m ordering this from Bratton’s and I’ll let them know that you are the reason. I’m going to make this 400A a driver, so I’ll add LED lights too. I was able to locate the old style turn signal switch that you had restored. Oh and Bratton’s offer a usb port with their wiring kit.
@@Kybossls A USB port??! How swanky!!
fantastic video Paul. thank you!
Great video Paul! Good info.
I have found that spit works well as a rubber lubricant.
It does!
What a great retrofit; better to fix good quality items than to buy new lesser quality items.
Absolutely right.
Great tip and cool toy Paul
Glad you liked it Matt!
Great video Model A Guy.
Thanks Pat
So where do you get inner tubes and tires?
Made in USA tubes from Les Schwab
Hi Paul, Great video. The battery operated pump interests me, but the 20% off promo code is not being accepted when I key it in. Perhaps a transposition or some part of the code missing? Please look into it. - Bill
Drat. I tried. You're right. Sorry about that. Thought I could get you a deal.
Paul, Which setting on my 2 tooth steering will take excessive play out of my steering wheel? Thanks
There are 4 adjustments on the 2-tooth steering boxes. 3 of them directly affect steering wheel play. See the video I did on how to adjust Model A steering boxes for details.
Thanks
@@carmengianforte2501 Thank YOU!!!!! I made triple sure the auto correct didn't monkey-up your name again.
Hey Paul when I drive my 31 model an oil is shooting out of the filler tube. Would you happen to know why and what I can do to fix it?
What??!! Ummm.... "shooting out" would be a serious problem. The crankcase would have to be seriously overfilled or the worst blowby ever. Like hole in a piston kind of blowby.
Is there a way to communicate so I would be able to explain a lot better?
At least the reproduction Model A bridge washers have the ridge to clamp the tube properly. The ones for Model T's are incorrectly stamped flat, no ridge. I end up buying Model A bridge washers and cutting them down to the proper shape for Model T tubes. The vendors do sell metal stem tubes for Model T's, but they are the wrong size, too big.
Ouch, that's unfortunate. Yes, that little ridge makes a BIG difference.
Did you really say "safety is number one priority" seems like I've heard that before
My tip of the hat to the Crazy Russian Hacker. The first UA-cam video I ever watched.
paul what is your radio of choice just to be different? i know your th model a guy but you have your radio hobby too! 73's KF0PRI
Antique radios, I like Crosleys. They were like the Model T of radios. Powell Crosley was the Henry Ford of home appliances. Most of the radios in my collection are Crosley brand, so is my washer and dryer. Maybe that's why my clothes always look worn out? Or maybe it's because I still wear clothes I wore in high school. I digress...
What! No sparkplug air pump.:)
Oh, snap!!! That would me the manly way to do it.
I emailed the tech question email looking for help and I stopped getting replies 😪
What?!! Try again, please. Or post your question here.
"old fashioned wrench turning!" And....room for modern technology to replace the bicycle pump!
Yes! Grudgingly... I wish I could find one made in USA
HUZZAH
Huzzzzah!!!
Sadly, CRAFTSMAN is no longer being made in the USA.
I heard that also. Mine are pretty old. ALL made in USA.
China better 😂
Пожалуйста, Пол, не поцарапай напильником полированную крышку сундука, установленного сзади автомобиля. Может быть, лучше было бы положить какую-нибудь защитную тряпку?
Please, Paul, do not scratch the polished lid of the trunk mounted on the back of the car with a file. Maybe it would be better to put some kind of protective cloth?
It is already severely scratched. And, the paint on it is just regular spray paint, so when it gets too scratched, I will just spray it again.
This is not visible in the video picture. The chest looks very good. Good morning!
Dropping that file on the trunk is like fingernails on a chalk board to more sensitive viewers like myself but another great video none the less.
thanks for sharing
Pretty cool!
Thank you as always. You're closing in on 50K - congratulations! God bless you as well, have a great week ~ Chuck
Charles, one would think that Paul would have anyone that owns a A would subscribe..
@@Kybossls Indeed. I thought essentially the same thing as I typed.
Never thought it would even be this many subs. The Model A family is amazingly supportive!
So you have to release the air in the side mount (fender mount) spare tire to get it out? I know you just stated that, but I never knew that, in addition why would it be designed this way?
Original tires were skinnier than modern repro Model A tires (except for the Goodyear tires).
@@ModelA Oh, I see, thank you for the reply
Hi Paul, I very much enjoy all your videos. You have talked about a "well sorted" Model A. Wondering if you might expand on that by listing the upgrades, inspections, and modifications one might do to a Model A to make it into a reliable daily driver?
I don't modify a dang thing. I go back to stock! Sorted means everything is working properly, nothing worn or broken or out of adjustment. Only "modifications" I do is turn signals and seat belts in the long distance touring cars.
Another good video. Might want do some research into those turn/stop lights you did in the last video. When I saw it I knew something bothered me but couldn't put my finger on it. Then it hit me. The stop lights are amber which I think is illegal. I don't know for sure if rear amber turn signals are allowed either. A new red lens like the original should correct it, if indeed illegal.
@@billchuplis9460 Those ARE original lenses! They do make repro lenses that are red top and bottom. Some 29's came with all red, my fordor has one. 1930 Model As left the factory with yellow on top and red on the bottom taillight lenses. And just one on drivers side.
Well I'll be dipped. :)
29.5 to 31 came factory with an amber stop light(s). Always something new to new learn. Thanks again for all you do!
So, should I give you a G'day mate, on G-mail?
Fine video. Reminds me of my youth and bicycle tires. And now the model A!
I use the metal valve stems on my tubless tire wheels as well. Of course now days the valve stem and TPMS are one piece usually. Thanks, Paul.
Those TPMS(nbc) tire stems are a pain in the wallet!!
Fun, informative video. Love your painted, polished work bench. I cringe every time you drop a wrench on it.
The "bench" is already pretty scratched up from previous owners. It is, and will be, used as a roadside workbench. That's why it's metal instead of wood.
Thank You. Looks easier than I thought. I replaced my tires last year which was also easier than I thought it would be but was too scared to try it. I envisioned having 5 brand new flat tires lol so I have black valve stems.
Hahaha!! It's not scary at all. Go for it!
as always excellent video. I got mine a year ago and assembled them wrong and had to redo all. thank you for making repair and ownership so much fun!
Great to hear! And, Thank You!!
I really love Model A Fords with a trunk
Well, I finally did one for you! Just for you, man.
@@ModelA thx Paul lol
SHINNS MODEL A GARAGE. I just put new wheels and tires together, I should have done that ,may next set. Thx Mr S.
