Weinbrenner Shoe Company, the parent of Thorogood boots, is an employee owned company that has been manufacturing footwear in Wisconsin since 1892. In this video I review my three pairs of Thorogoods-- talking about the difference between the Red Wing Heritage and Thorogood moc toe boots, which boots I recommend for motorcycle riding, and how to get women's sizes in the boots (hint: size down 2. I wear a women's 7 and order a men's 5). I even whip out my Doc Martens for a moment and talk about the break in period and longevity of those patent leather boots.

Nice sensible accurate video! I bought my Thorogood round top steel toe 10 yrs ago. They look almost new. Very comfy, especially for wide feet, as the boot is cut generously. The steel toe furnished enough protection when a 100 lb oak log fell on my right toe area. No pain og injury. Good boots for a diabetic like myself. No diabetic foot pain with these. I combine them with wigwam socks, so my feet are never cold. Keep up the good work! You are a great role model for the motorcycling world!

I’ve been riding for 30+ plus years, damn I’m getting old, and I’ll point out one “be careful” based on said experience. The loop with laced on footwear can get caught on your shifter or rear brake pedal and you may figure this out coming to a stop and not being able to put a foot down. This is typically more problematic after the laces have stretched out over time because we naturally make the loop larger to take up the added length. I’m not an elitist moto snob. Wear what you want. Just pointing out an “oh $h!t” moment I’ve experienced. RIDE ON!
Definitely something to be aware of! I know some people would never wear something with laces on the bike. A double knot can't hurt, and it's good to keep in mind that things can go wrong!
I’m not a rider but do see a lot of motorcyclists wearing engineer boots which use a buckle strap. This would address the lacing issue.

Leather boots used to last decades and were repairable. Now your typical boots are glued and pillowy and aren't meant to be repaired. As to laces.. I double knot them when riding. Loose laces are attracted to machinery. 😊

I also wear Thorgood boots. They're supplied by my employer, as we're required to wear steel toe, oil resistant soles, etc. I wear the Bates style 8" high with the side zip. They also have extra padding for the ankle bone and are waterproof. I like them because they are comfortable, fit in at work (or most places while out and about) are very comfortable, and with the side zip, are super easy to remove and put on. Obviously not as much protection as a real motorcycling boot, but about as good as it gets while still looking like a normal boot and not like a power ranger boot.
I just got back from a motorcycle trip from Atlanta to Denver that included a week of riding around in CO. The boots performed perfectly and simplified packing as I didn't need to bring any other shoes along. And they're fine for walking, even a few miles of hiking.

I believe the 1892 Janesville boot uses Horween Chromexcel which is a higher grade leather. Agree that the Thorogood moc toes are incredibly soft and easy to break in. Context Clothing in WI carries quite a few 1892 Thorogood models.
Good review. Foot support is something thats very important, when younger you don't feel it but as you get up in age you'll know the difference between a cheap boot and a good quality boot. well done.

Late to the party on this one but here is how I deal with laces.
Get them long enough that, when you are done with the lacehooks/eyelets, you are able to wrap them around the top of your boot, around the back and to the front again. The length mine are leaves enough to do a double knot of the bow, with loops about 2 and 1/2 inches long, well protected under my pants leg.

First day in 814-4600. Took my girl Christmas shopping and I was amazed how comfortable they are. The only part that was a little uncomfortable was the heel is a bit stiff at first. Highly recommended these great boots. Thanks for the review. Now to find a watch strap to match.

I wear Stylmartin Indian laced boots. Just tuck the laces in, never had a problem. I also hockey style the laces around my ankle, the loops tucked in there.
Should love Dr Martens being in the UK, but their lack of resole really brasses me off.
I have an office job and always wear new shoes / boots at my desk for a few weeks, before walking in them. Seems to work and saves on the blisters!!

I have the same exact boot (thorogood). They are crazy amazing. Ride them in the winter, all year also used them at work (construction, site visits) and even played basketball with them lol
Thanks. A few months ago I tried finding boots that would fit and be durable, and have plenty of tread. My Danner military style boots had served me well for 2 years but had worn out soles, so I was starting to slip. boy, I miss those boots. I checked in my area, and on-line but there was just nothing that would work for my size, W9/M7.5. Amazon didn't even offer my size in a number of boots. I finally just decided to drive out to the next county and found just one pair that would work. They weren't even the best style, only a pair that I could actually wear. They weren't even something I would buy if I had other choices. I get really frustrated that manufacturers won't provide any options for women. I did find thorougood boots in one store but the sizes were too big. I also found them really heavy compared to other brands.

Thorogood also has the most comfortable steel toe workboots I've ever worn. Blows Red Wing away in my opinion. You can get them unlined so there's no moisture-wicking liner to add weight and stink.
you can glue a thin strap of leather on your left boot so the gear stick wont wear away your boot ... actually you could probably make a slip-on boot strap that would suit different boots.

Nice review, i have a great RW dealer in town, so i wear RW's. With that said i feel Thorogoods are well made boots.
I was told since I'm a size 9 in women's have to buy in a mans size 7. Did you buy a mans size if you did; did they fit comfortably, or where they bigger or smaller
? As they only made those boots in men, not women.
I wear what ever looks and feel's good. Doc Martin's mostly but that's just me. Kool vlog.
I made the mistake of buying their China made boot, 834-6087. It was great with one exception. There was a place inside that rubbed my ankle and finally wore through to the hard material underneath. Nothing I tried could take the pressure and rubbing from my ankle. Had to quit wearing them long before I wore them out.

Nice booties , I recently got red wings from their store in carnaby st London , love em but wearing them casual, as I’m a tad apprehensive to wear on bike ....yet ,

Thorogoods and most all wedge soles were made for iron working, u would NEED a heel for putting spikes on and climbing telephone poles. I gotchu girl ;)

Makes sense to me. My size is uncommon for these boots (basically a boys size) so I had to grab mine online. But once they get more popular with women I bet more retailers will have them floating around!
you can always return them. that's how many people buy things these days.
ed rader True, but it’s kind of a hassle returning things. I buy a lot of things online, but not much of these purchases and clothes and shoes because I hate the hassle of returning something that doesn’t fit right.
i just paid $141 for a pair of red wing work chukkas seconds from Nordstrom Rack. that's half price. i knew they would fit because i have other redwings. if not i could have ordered two sizes and returned the ones that didn't fit. some companies will even pay return postage (amazon prime) but if they don't i can buy postage online and my mailman will pick up the box.
Wouldn't wear any of these for riding as they're too flexible and not ankle padded. TCX and others make proper short riding boots that are almost identical to look at. Laces just require common sense to avoid tangling up. Thorogoods run a good half size up on UK equivalents even allowing for a thickish sock which compensates for the lack of lining. Lovely album that, inside and out!

Those dark Thorogood Moc-Toes are from their 1892 (Heritage) Collection. They are called the “Janesville.” Made of Horween Chromexcel leather.
I don’t think Thorogood markets them anymore but u might find a pair on Ebay

I end up just purchasing men's shoes, but 2 sizes smaller. So a men's 5 is a ladies 7. That tends to be true for most shoes!

Red Wings have nothing on Thorogood. The soles alone kill the contest because Thorogoods are just as grippy but way more durable. Factory resoles AND lower initial cost are also upsides, plus union discounts.
I just wear my Nike mid tops when I ride. They're Nike army/outdoor all terrain boots with anti-slip bottoms.

Red wings are awesome but allot of steel workers will tell you the best budget boot for iron work is die hards at your local sears...all of these boots are excellent but I love DR. Martin’s iron bridge boots but there more like a traditional welding boot but super comfortable and you don’t have to soak them and ware them wet for the day to brake them in.....not that your welding anything so I’ll just shut up now

Yes, I did order the Tomahawks in a 5 as well. The length of my foot from heel to toe is approximately 23.5 cm. Hope that helps!

@@callunas Yes I think they are, especially since they're leather and will mold to your foot. I tend to wear medium thick socks with mine. You can always relax the lacing a bit too
Just wanted to let you know I ordered a pair in sz 5. I have a wide toe, tiny heel/ankle combo and they are the first boots that actually fit me well. Not to mention they look great. Thanks for your help, Meghan!

How did you size them compared to your normal shoe size? Would you say they’re true to size?
Yes I'd say they're true to size paired with regular socks. Would be roomier with dress socks or anything on the thinner side. My women's size is 7 and the men's 5 is perfect for me. So men just match up with their regular size! Online there are detailed dimensions for the boots too.

I own 2 pairs of througood gen flex boots and a pair througood omini. And sveral redwings. Not motorcycle styles boots. But, good work boots. I truly like both brands. Throughgood has probably more lesser priced styles made in the usa. Sad thing is; non resolable boots tend to be a little more comfortable. I own a few. But, i generally stay away from them. I want recraft my boots if it makes sense.

Docs are overpriced for how cheap they are trash boots (imo)
Yeah I hear they used to be way better made in the 80s and beforehand, but the contemporary quality just isn't quite there. I know mine are flakey now, but the sole is quite solid.
