Thorogoods hands down. When it comes down to it, what matters most is how well the boots hold up under real world conditions and really testing the ability of the boots to handle harsh working conditions. I’m a union electrician, working in all kinds of conditions from indoors on concrete all day to outside in the rain snow and mud, working on uneven terrain and inside gravel or rock ditches doing trench work for unground duct banks, and finally some days working on rebar all day with the boots constantly getting scratched and cut up. My current pair of thorogoods are soon to be on their 4th year of service and they ate still going strong. They have lost most of their factory waterproofing but an occasional mink oil treatment fixes that pretty good. Other than that, they are just as durable as the day I bought them, still with very little cuts in the leather besides small nicks from rebar. They started off as the most comfortable pair of boots I have ever worn, and some how have gotten even more comfortable. I have had molten hot metal from cad-welding spilled on them and the boots appear as if nothing had happened. I have watched coworkers blow through multiple pairs of red-wings, danners, timberlands, Carolinas and ariats over the last almost 4 years and my thorogoods are still going strong. On top of that, they are both USA AND UNION made. Until some other company can make a pair of boots that is USA and union made, can match the comfort, AND can out last the thorogoods as far as standing up to actual working conditions, no other company besides thorogood will get my money when it comes to work boots. You just can not beat them. And it shows when you go out onto a jobsite and easily 75% of the job is rocking thorogoods on their feet.,

I did tear them up pretty good but working 70 plus hours a week for 2 full years will do that. I recently switched to the Irish setter because of the waterproofing. Have had them a month and I'll say the break in was definately hard. I'm hoping they'll have slightly better construction along the lines of Red Wing. They're comfortable now. Look great, feel great. When It comes time to climb a pole or tower I choose a Red Wing logger with a shank. Standing on a flat hard surface all day moc toe is where it's at!

I think the most important factor in any footwear decision is the health of your feet. And an important aspect of that is having an insole that is proper for your foot ergonomics. Everyone's feet are different and the ability to use custom or off the shelf orthotics is paramount. I can appreciate the fact that leather insoles if made properly can shape to your foot and they do a great job in my ostrich dress boots or my around town shit kickers. But when it comes to the shoe I am wearing every day at work while carrying equipment through job sites and spending all day on my feet it has to have a slip in insole or Im not buying it. And the main gripe the coblers had with the thorogoods was that the flimsy foam insole that comes with it wore out... Its meant to be easily replaceable if not replaced immediately before even breaking them in. You dont need to be a cobbler to replace them and I think that may have been why they didnt like it, less business for them.

    • @joedelumen9877
      @joedelumen9877 Рік тому +1

Kyle, you're on to something. The single most important factor in choosing a boot is Fit. Problem is, most folks go about selecting Fit by trial and error. Knowledge of the 'last' proportions and fit character and how it relates to your foot dimensions, proportions and geometry is a good start. A shoe-maker offering a wide selection of Widths will represent a commitment to Fit: The manufacturing economics with a much larger investment Lasts, Dies and Patterns will greatly improve your chances for a Great Fit. And, with a highly structured, well built boot, Fit ought to be the main objective. Compromise in fit means conflict, conflict means pain.
My advise? Go to a local Boot Guy that knows his/her stuff, measures both feet, makes small modifications, has a large investment in in-stock Inventory. Someone that will take care of you with after-sale service, (that means they want to keep you happy and be your Boot guy long-term)
I'm one of those Boot Guys, fifty years as a fitter, Cped... We're busy because folks that rely on their feet to earn a living have discovered the difference. Moc-Toes? We have 8 different styles, which one was made with you in mind?

In my opinion Red Wings were always the solid choice for “looking good” but on the pricier side. Not to mention they are sold EVERYWHERE and the smaller companies could always use the love. The leather is great, the consistency is great, all around great boot. Tough to beat.
Thorogoods always the choice for the job site on account of affordability, durability, and COMFORT. I go through boots every 10-12 months before my feet are crying. Quality can be inconsistent. I’ve had boots being stitched incorrectly, laces not being lined correctly, and one boot being stained more than the other.
    Never cared for Thursday...

I've used the Red Wing boots for a while and I love them, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I'd pick the White's boots ,they have the thickest leather upper and that's my thing when I'm looking for Goodyear welted boots.

But I have the cheaper Redwing Irish setters and LOVE them. So comfortable! My son's wear Thorogoods and they think they are the best. Lol

I like that the Thursday boot are more slimmed down as me I have a narrow toe box. As a traditional work boot it's definitely not good enough but like Stridewise I live in NYC and having to walk around trying to break in Red Wings would be annoying as you only walk and never drive here.

Vibram soles and baby soft leather with very little break in. Right up there with the 8 in thoroughgoods as far as durability and comfort.

The problem with the redwing is the lace up is a pain and the break in is longer than most. Truthfully, I find it takes the better part of 4 month for the Redwing Moc toe to be fully broke in wearing it 3 days a week.
Let me give you a little bit of my background and forgive me if my comment is long, boring as poorly written. I have a severe sleep disorder that keeps me awake and often I’m exhausted when watching UA-cam and making comments. This is one of those times.
In this grouping, I prefer the Thorogood but agree that the synthetic shoe insert wears out faster than leather inserts. I also love how leather inserts shape themselves to your foot over time and they are easier to slide a quality sock clad foot into and out of. But the synthetic inserts have real advantages in cushioning and custom orthotics if you need the cushion and or orthotics. I find them more comfortable but that is a purely subjective statement.
I work construction near Cleveland Ohio. My boots are wet and coated in clay mud a lot!. NOW..... this is IMPORTANT. I’m older. I grew up on a large 25000+ cattle and sheep ranch in the NM mountains. Leather boots, chaps, saddles, etc. have been a big part of my life. Quality leather products, properly maintained have the potential to lasts lifetime if not many lifetimes! For example, we had saddles that were 150+ years old in the 1970’s! My dad had cowboy boots that he wore all of his adult life!
So back to Moc Toe boots. I agree that the top Moc Toe boots in this review are all excellent. I also agree for longevity, the synthetic shoe inserts wear out faster. I also agree that synthetic materials in the construction can create problems for cobblers during repairs.
However, I think synthetic If used judiciously, make for a more comfortable boot during break in and synthetic are the only real option for orthopedic inserts or extra cushion insoles.
I use inserts that last about a year and are easily replaced and for me, they are more comfortable. Don’t be afraid of synthetic insoles. But understand leather insoles will last forever if properly maintained.
A few years ago I fell on a job site and crushed my calcaneus bone and many of my right foot bones. I also destroyed the cartilage. I’m now developing arthritis in my right foot. I also tore my plantar fascia. In addition I’ve had 4 major back surgeries in my lower back and neck. I still work 6 days a week and average 10 hour days. So the fit and comfort of by shoes and socks are really very important.
Here are some of my personal tips for any of you who work construction. I have 3 pairs of Moc toe work boots. I also have two additional pair of work boots that one pair is steel toed and the other is waterproof.
Now, my boots get wet and muddy often. When I get a pair wet and muddy, at the end of the day, I use warm water a mild scrub brush and saddle soap to clean. I then install a shoe tree and place on a floor grate so they can dry. The next day, I wear a different pair that has been prepared and is ready to wear. At the end of the work day if my second pair of boots are also wet, muddy or both, I’ll repeat the same cleaning process and insert shoe trees.
Now the first pair has dried and I’ll condition the leather using one of a couple of conditioners. I really like Saphir Renovateur shoe cream. It is often all the dry boots need to return them to good condition. If more is needed, I’ll use a shoe cream and often a clear coat of Saphir clear wax (I like to keep the stitches looking original. The clear wax makes that easier.
Anyway I just keep rotating boots. Now, I meet with clients often in an office or home setting. When I know this is going to occur, I’ll make sure my shoes are polished and looking their best the night before. I’m never worried about using any of the work boots for work. I just try to keep a couple of them looking good for such an occasion.
By the way, I just purchased a pair of Revolt Moc toe from Midwest Boots. They have a black wedge sole and the leather is called “Crazy Horse”. So far, I’m impressed with their comfort. I was told they are made in USA by HH Brown?? Anyway they leather always looks new after using the Renovateur product after deep cleaning.
I find it’s important to let wet leather dry and then condition before wearing again. In conjunction with good shoe trees, you can keep work boots for a very very long time.
Well, I’m rambling. Hope I wasn’t too long winded or confusing.

I really enjoyed moctober. I had bought a pair of Thursdays diplomats, around April, after spending a lot of time looking at reviews and videos of literally the whole lineup (except whites). Personally I found that due to the seam at the back of the heel on the Thursday it was the only bit that took any length of time to breakdown and make them really comfortable, and I really enjoy them. But that being said I think the whites look like a really great boot and possibly would have been my choice if they were available at the time. My only pet peeve is that the shank is inside the sole. That would be something to bear in mind when getting them resoled as you'd probably want your cobbler to fit the exact same sole or go for a vibram and a separate shank bedded up into the cork. But to reiterate, unbelievable job done by Weston he's literally made every quality/money conscious buyer aware of the current available options and made our lives a whole lot easier. Great job again!

Can you do a review of real work boots. I’m tough on boots based on my occupations. I work in crawlspaces daily, crawling through mud and water, and teach welding in the evenings standing on concrete. The best/longest lasting I have found with a reinforced toe are the keens( 9 mon) and timberland pro (11mon). Made in USA red wings lasted 33 days. Wolverines lasted 3 weeks. I’d like to see a comparison that includes reinforced toe, steel/composite toe, waterproof is mandatory, and support/longevity is a huge plus.
My other boots are danner gore Tex hikers, Justin slip ons with vibram soles, and some carhartt mock toes I purchased last Christmas( haha).

It was pretty easy for me to rule the Thursday boots out quickly. They didn’t really have the workweek aesthetic and build that I am looking for. It was much harder to decide between the Redwings and Whites but in the end I kept the Redwings. The Whites were really nice but I felt like they were a little too wide for my foot, whereas some people dislike how narrow the D width Redwings are it actually works well for my feet. I also think that over time the leather on the Redwings (I got the 1907 Copper R&T) will take on a nicer patina but time will tell on that one. Thanks so much for the videos! I had the redwings, breaking them in was a huge pain.... took like a month to break in, then 3 months later the soles melted off... right now I do have the carharts. I think they look really stupid, like I’m walking around with a club foot. I thought after I wore them a while they would look better, they never did. I will say they are built pretty comfortable. And pretty durable so far. Still waterproof after about 8 months which is impressive. My favorite moctoe so far is from Eddie Bauer. It only costs about $40, super comfortable from the start, looks good to me. Lasted me about a year before the leather separated from the sole. Could of lasted longer if I took better care of them. But for $40 can’t go wrong. I’m looking for a 8” boot next.

I've owned a few pairs of redwings including the moc toes for work and have never been disappointed. That said I'm really excited to try a pair of Thursdays for casual wear.

Thursday boots are a very eye catching boot but I am biased being from Minnesota. I love my Redwings and when mine need to be replaced if they ever do I’m getting Redwings again.

Which means you actually put them to the test, redwings aren’t really that comfortable for me that’s why I’ll always stick to my thorogoods

I've worn Red Wings and love them... I've never had a pair of the White's, obviously, because they are so new, but I'm definitely going to get a pair, thanks to you, Weston!
Wishing you peace, and good health... you're a young guy, you'll beat the dreaded "V"... there's a 99%+ recovery rate... you just have to be sensible about it, eat well, and do what your doc tells you to do. Peace and be well. Praying for you.

As a warehouse worker I walk 7-9 hours out of my 10 hr shift, I've tried different boots & I've concluded that a good pair of boots will last me 12-13 months & that's because the boots become my everyday shoewear for the most part. So far Timberlands are the boots of choice due to their comfort & price point. In a year they get replaced - no cobbler needed.

Similar here. I usually walk over 10000 steps a day. I was doing Tims for years but I recently got rock roosters and holy crap are they comfortable. Yet to see how long that lasts but they are the most comfortable boot I've ever worn. Irish setter are great to.

I like the White's the best. To me they look the best and have good quality. Pluss with all the other boots you get the "they are really durable, but...." or "they are comfortable, but... ". The whites are the only boots that check all the boxes and have no exceptions.

Irish setter for work.. no break in at all. And Thursday for casual wear because they're slimmer as you point out. Especially since I wear a size 9, the Irish Setters are disproportionately tall in the toe for casual wear.
