- May.09 -- Prominent venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya, founder and chief executive officer of Social Capital, speaks with Bloomberg's Emily Chang at the inaugural Bloomberg Business of Equality Summit about the lack of diversity and inclusion in the VC and tech communities, and what he thinks it will take to effect real change.
Lol Jesus he's good at answering these misdirected questions
Well, a lot of it seems to be because he believes in the underpinnings of these misdirected questions, sadly.
@@MrVara411 interesting. Feel free to elaborate
That's how you become a top exec at Facebook at 22 years old.
@@long_fellow he left AOL at 27 so he was definitely not 22 at FB
True. Emily seems like she has a victim hood complex
Suggestion to Americans out of high school - go get a STEM degree in a third world country. You'll save money on education, healthcare and living expenses. Hire cheap labor to have somebody cook and clean - saving you time. Then come back to US to take American jobs. Let the schools selling overpriced degrees suffer. That will also get the travel bug out of you without having to spend extra time and money for long term travel. Let the US retailers, housing market and banks suffer as a result for at least the 4 years you are not in US
Also, since you can't get a manufacturing job anymore in US, play the capitalism back at corporations when back. Buy directly from China. You'll not only save money, the companies sending your jobs outside will lose your business.
I'm an immigrant and was so shocked to see the cost of education and healthcare ridiculously high in the most developed and powerful country. This is not good for the nation.
I’ve just started to watch Mr. Palihapitiya’s speeches. I not only appreciate his incites into business, but I’ve come to highly respect how progressive he is in speaking up for minorities. Thank you!
Um...women are not minorities. They are actually the majority because men keep dying. For every conceivable reason. Early. Yet nobody will advocate or talk on behalf of men because they all want to get laid and paid.
@Wizard Epps Existence. Morning glory.
This looks like an example of someone who is not afraid to share an unpopular opinion and can afford to do so. Good for @chamath
This is not an unpopular opinion though.
@@simonnilsson5356 True
I'm still waiting for the outrage at the gender imbalance in sewage workers and ditch diggers.
How about men in nanny’s job
NR the disparity tends to learn more towards industries that require creativity, leadership, and intelligence. Sewage workers and ditch diggers have a low wage/income ceiling and the demand for jobs is very low. Technology will eventually kill those jobs. Besides, men still can’t have children and there’s no outrage in that.
@@jen_nice2059 Actually no, with all respect to them, being a fire fighter doesn't take creativity and intelligence much, just extreme bravery and skill as well as braun and stamina. It's the 'prestige' that outragous the leftists.
@@jen_nice2059 you are probably a good person. I'm sure you mean well. People are often goaded into hate movements though their intentions are good. Problem for you is that logic matters.
@@edwardk3 Stop whining. Your logic should have helped you hold that in.
He handled that is such a great way. Like bruh who is this chick trying bait him into these loaded bullshit questions. Let the man spit knowledge.
I kinda disagree. The questions are not stupid, but the answers we usually hear about these questions are stupid. And the reason is because most of the times, people want to avoid answering these questions but don't want to look dumb
Sounds like he hired very talented women. He didn’t go out and find “unicorns” for social capitals fund with an equality quota. Imagine this, quality and highly disciplined people being hired and they happen to be from different backgrounds.
She’s so obsessed with the diversity doctrine even though she’s one of the most privileged journalists in SF. How about diversity of opinion/ideas...
True.
Trump is right to protect normal Americans from Illegal Immigration.
I don't think the next Elon Musk/Brin/ will shy away fro the USA. It is in fact much easier to open a business now than during the Obama/Bush era. Legal immigration is still on the board and this is the Only way people should come to Any country if they want to Integrate. Chamath is smart and i respect him/ hiring should be done on a base of ability .
Just another white women pretending to be woke.
She just wrote a book on diversity and trying to sell it.
@@zusiphesikayi2390 She’s asian
This Emily Chang tries so hard to turn the conversation into a gender inequality issue. Why do you think? Oh yeah, she just wrote a book about it and is trying to sell it.
I have never seen such a trash interviewer. The focus of the interview is the person who is being interviewed. Which interviewer plugs in their book. Etiquette woman, where is it?
He talks, we listen.
Contrast this guy and his eloquence and articulate thoughts with the current elected president of the united states, and you have a picture of everything that is wrong with the united states.
You are also apart of everything that's wrong with the United states, people like you
anyone else tired of diversity talk?
Yep. Just saw this quote on twitter from Thomas Sowell: "Equal opportunity policies are against racism. Affirmative action is racism under new management." Applies perfectly. Gender hiring is actual sexism under new management.
Only discriminate against idiots.
Yep. Completely sick of it.
No
Evan Harris WELL SAID!
chamath is candid, informative, direct and choose not to be politically correct.. this makes him unique and interesting listening to as he never fails to bring a new perceptive, an alternative dimension to any issue he discuss.. keep your identity mate..we are proud of you ..
Love this guy, just stumbled on him recently - he says it how it is, and says what's right instead of the right thing to say. Big difference.
Did not understand what u meant but sounded cool. So thumps up.
Chamath, Really like your expression style keep up the good work be your self as always !
Excellent discussion... Emily , you are interviewing one of the brightest in the world at this time on Venture capital
"We are addicted to free things" profound
In other words, he doesn’t care at all about diversity... it’s about hiring the best, irrespective who they are!
he's said in another interview he doesn't care about diversity quotas, he wants diversity of views. almost no one in tech really understands diversity
It's common sense. Everyone knows it. But some people like baiting others with silly questions.
@@shellderp I work in tech, and I think most who do get it. All of the misrepresentation usually comes from PR or Media IMO.
This guy is amazing. I’m so grateful for his intentions and message.
Very first question, he slayed Emily with one word and he knew it.
I was listening to it and then it struck me - he's doing the Moneyball thing of investing!
While West debates gender, East dominates tech horizon.
True. Time to work hard, not talk about gender. You guys in the USA should get to work and science and stop this crazy all talk no action ....whatever.
Discrimination is stupid. Diversity hiring is stupid. Its odd see an extremely privileged Asian women crying about diversity. If more women wanted to be in tech, they would be.
Listen, I am a woman, and I am black, but I feel like diversity now has become more about the look and public perception of a company rather than making sure that in our recruiting process we are not biased.
People are making too many superficial noises especially nowadays without attacking the real devil that lives in personal biases during the recruiting process.
I was excited to hear this until it just turned into a chick womansplaining
He was pushed to talk about it. I also get tired by this Narative..
There are bad sides to offshoring and bringing in people from outside. 100 Russians come to a small city, it is diversity. 1 million come, you are in Russia now. When large scale immigration happens on a daily basis, you become like the countries the immigrants are coming from. The reason Mexico is so different from US while being the same land mass is the mentality of the people residing,
He's got some really good things to say. He does come off as a little unappreciative to the fact that Silicon Vally has given him pretty much ALL of his success. He points out correctly that in other parts of the world there are certainly fabulous engineers, but those jurisdictions might be missing other necessary requirements for becoming centers of innovation. For example, China has a totalitarian government and India has a caste system embedded in their culture. America isn't perfect, but the rule of law tends to be better than most other places in the world and its an immense marketplace. Also, by-in-large America is welcoming and allows people from all over the world to pursue their dreams freely. Chamath's own story is an amazing one. What makes a place become a center of innovation is not truly understood. In my opinion, it largely happens organically and can't be imposed.
He meant Silicon Valley VCs
We are really missing a top comment with the timestamps when Chamath speaks
google needs to create an AI to help us define spoken words while watching a video.
There’s a reason she’s still at Bloomberg and not at CNBC... this interview felt painfully awkward at times
Love his analogy.
Always straightforward with his answers on gotcha questions.
He should talk about Tesla. Emily hates Tesla and she is totally evilly bias.
Tons of posts on him talking about Tesla and Musk. He's a big fan
His reasoning that if you look for talent, you find women falls flat with tesla. It's a company of mostly men and they are KILLING it.
It is the aggressive nature exhibited by this interviewer, her tone, that keeps many women like her, no matter how gifted, pushed away from small groups of men who function better in a calmer manner. She is combative by nature, good for her, but really....
She's actually chirpy and it is HER show, so she has some authority. You are making it about tone (not feminine and submissive enought) to undermine her and her arguments because you don't like what she is saying. The person she's interviewing is calling people names, but he is a man, so he's tone is cool and calm?
@@maryamkim1281 please cry more, sweety.
Emily Chang comes across as a very hateful person.
This video ended too soon
Equality except not really. Emily is annoying with her BS and I would say that if she were a man. I very fair that way.
She’s not getting what he’s saying.
She is very obsessed with diversity and women while Palihapitiya responce is that its more about the business and people that are really productive towards the goals at making quality of life better by solving those complex problems!
He is projecting a world view, that goes beyond political, cultural and religious boundaries.
Any way to get the full interview ?
3.5 B under management then, 1.7 Billion in 2019 alone 👏👏👏
Keep going Chamath !!!
Fantastic interview! Always interested in what he has to say.
High performers don't worry about competition. However, mediocre people do. That is why diversity talk scares people so much - more and better competition.
WOMEN DONT ENJOY TECHNOLOGY AS MUCH! Holy fuck, let it go already.
She deflates the energy in the room. Best person for the job. Too much work to be done to waste time complaining and blanket blaming. How many person-hours is wasted theorizing instead of pursuing and accomplishing tangible work?
holly smokes!! Exactly, even though she was trying to make a point, but got bias. Agreed, what Chamath says: Is move smart, faster and with a lot of data. he does not waste his time theorizing instead of pursuing.
Turning this off in the first 30 seconds. Not a good way to open dialogue with a brilliant person.
where is chamath these days?
Is this the show or noit
Eloquent
It may be good for US businesses to sell degrees for 100K, good for govt to tax homes for decades in return for "free" education till high school, and then turn around and hire those who got a near free degree from a government run college from offshore location - people who contributing anything to US. Never spent a dime on housing, food cars etc. The people living in lala lands will never understand why Trump won and why he is doing the right thing to save US jobs.
Palihapitiya, sometimes you are smart and other times you are tone deaf You can't see things from the point of vast middle working class that sacrifices the most and gets the short end of the stick. They build the country and immigrants get to enjoy and take their jobs
Most screaming for equality simply don't understand how hard something is...
You started Social Capital in 2011 and you have how many white aryan men?
Her doesn't seek diversity, he seeks the best- whoever they are.
Very easy to listen to this fella... Can you guys get him to Bloomberg more often...
What is the company
Wow..what a guy. We definitely need more people like him. Creating value and generating revenue should be the top of the list when running a business and not pushing forward your latent biases.
In India I can only watch laliga from facebook only what to do I am ready to pay for face book

What does he mean when he says beta in this interview?

My father told me not to talk to strangers unless they offered me candy or money. If people are so gullible today, very little can save them.
He said about 10 times
It doesn’t matter about color or gender
He is forgetting khosla ventures... better than social capital
Genius
Brilliant 🤩
we are addicted to free things :D :D agree . . . .
Goodness, she doesn't listen does she? He's speaking English and she's speaking English. But she can't understand him. She seems to ask preset questions instead of incorporating his answers that he gave and think before asking more questions.
Win is bad goal. If you can't go back due to dosing players. I rather have a normal team on my side.
04:23
sir, the interviewer does not believe you/agree with you...
Maybe you need to listen again
If you think you can compete with silicon valley hiring chickens or donkeys you can do it. There is nothing stopping you it is a free country. Good luck with that.
I build a system that restores the pancreas in 8 hrs. Do I get funding?

15:09 This is a super important point. H1B and other programs for attracting talent from all over the world has been super beneficial to United States. From the perspective of a strategic advantage/disadvantage: The actual impact of a potential reversal will be felt.
There is really nothing more challenging than being a middle-aged white male in Silicon Valley. Emily is sooooo out of touch.
Diversity talk only scares poor performers. The NBA is probably 25% foreign born players now. There are more quality white players now than ever before. All there because they can actually play very well. The nonwhite players aren't complaining. When the rules are clear, and the playing field is equal everyone benefits in the right way. Why ignore almost 70% of the talent in any marketplace.
Chamath is so smart. big fan. I also think he's on something, why is he sweating so much?
He knew what he was building at Facebook. Today I am only listening to him because he made money by working at Facebook $FB. I won't be surprised if he invest in a business model morally similar to Facebook.
This man is a true prodigy and an inspiration for a brighter future for humanity. The gears of change are on the move and the wheels are grinding all that antiquated old age rust trying to keep that old order.
Chamath, you are damn good... But doesn't want to push you to be better and better.. and put un due pressure on you...
These two people are poles apart. She wants women to be chosen BECAUSE of their gender. He just wants the best people.
His reasoning pretty much destroys feminist garbage. Yet he seems to buy into it. I've lost a lot of respect for him. Why would he speak at such a hateful event?
You are being emotional.
@@maryamkim1281 how dare you minimize how I'm feeling! Now repeat after me: "however you are feeling, it is right"
Now do that the rest of your life, and maybe you know how I feel. This is an exercise in empathy after all.
