      It wouldn't hurt to try the stock shim stack first to see where you end up.

    I regeared and everything was the same between the old gears and new gears, however when I try to torque my pinion I can barely spin the pinion as I'm not even close to 150 foot pounds, I've tried removing shims and I can't figure out why my pinion won't spin, any advice would help

    Hey question for ya. I know this is an old post. But I have a leak coming from the splines between the pinion gear threads and the pinion yoke. I have a Dana 35 which i know is crush sleeve relative. I have put it back together myself, but it didn't have a star washer. I'm curious if you know where to get them. Cuz I want to put in a new crush sleeve, but want to get a star washer to put in just in case. Also might get some of that gasket sealer specifically for gear oil. But when I put this back together I didn't put a new crush sleeve on it, i just tightened it a little more, so that may be my issue why it's leaking ever so slightly. Just wondering if you know where to get those star washers. I've checked amazon and ebay. They don't have much, if any, of those types and with 26 splines or star edges. However you want to say

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  4 роки тому

      That's a good questions, as a quick google search doesn't show any results. You could try asking fb groups. I just reused the old one, and added some RTV as well to keep it sealed up.

  • @kevinb5476

    Why would front drive shaft pinion cause hwy vibration. It should not be turning.

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  4 роки тому

      It still spins because both axle shafts still spin when driving. If you could pull one if the shafts like with how central axle disconnect works, then the spider gears can spin free instead of the carrier. That's part of why lock out hubs are popular.

      @@NickInTimeFilms Thanks. By the way I bought one of your diagnostic readers for my 1989 YJ Renix after two years of chasing my tail replacing sensors, fixing crappy wires, vaccum lines and cleaning fuse block. It told my I had a bad 02 sensor which was one of the first things I had replaced. So I was reluctant to believe it but they are cheap on Amazon so I bought a new one and I will be danged if it didn't fix my issue. The old Wrangler has never run so good. I think I had multiple issues that got better as I was trying to track down the problem. Seemed like it ran better after going through vaccum system and every little bad connection I found but never could get it to run right. So thank you for doing what you do!

    Question...I replaced my seal, but im unable to check the preload since I dont have a torque wrench with an inch pounds gauge. Is it necessary to check the preload, even if all Im doing is replacing the seal? Thanks.

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  4 роки тому +1

      To do the preload check properly you are suppose to remove the ring gear, so even my method here wasn't great. Depends how worn out your bearings are but you can get by just swapping seals and making sure you are torqued to spec.

    Hello. I am currently doing a reagear myself first time I missed one thing and had a question if you could help. When you removed that seal isn't there or was there an oil slinger or like a big shim that covers over top of that bearing right on the other side of that pinion seal? If you know or recall I would appreciate your recollection or input as I don't feel like getting it wrong and was the only thing I was questioning trying to put my new pinion in before I do a final button up next weekend. Thank you!

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  4 роки тому

      There may have been an oil slinger somewhere on the pinion stack, but i have no idea how that got it in there as I had to bend the crap out of it when i did the first regear. can probably spot that in the first dana 30 teardown video.

    • @SarahSmith-hd8kd
      @SarahSmith-hd8kd 4 роки тому

      @@NickInTimeFilms thank you very much. I have since seen and found that yes there is supposed to be one right on the other side of the seal when it gets popped out found out they are supposed to be there for proper oiling of the end or front bearings as both sides of the pinion are supposed to have one not sure what if anything happens if not replaced like they're supposed to be but not going to find out either😁 thanks again for response though and keep the jeep going FOREVER👍

    Can someone explain how to remove a Dana 30 rear pinion bearing on an 01 Grand Cherokee? I've tried absurd amounts of heat and two 5lbs magnets to try and pull it out from the backside but no luck. I got it to move maybe a couple millimeters but it refuses to go any further.. I'm honestly just trying to avoid pulling the front diff and pushing it out the back.

    I need the rear end replaced in my 2000 Cherokee. My pinion is bad plus other bearing bad. Im wanting to take out axles, housing an all out of my 2000 cherokee and replace it with another complete housing axels an all.unbolt u bolts drop it all. What modal jeeps will inner change. I know i have a Dana 30 in the front and its good and a Dana 35 in the rear thats bad.. My rear gear ratio is 355. What other jeep rear ends will inner change and i will be ok with my front end dana 30

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  5 років тому

      Your rear is more then likely a Chrysler 8.25 which is better then the Dana 35. And Xj Cherokee rest axle will swap in, but the 8.25 is the best no hassle swap. The ford 8.8 is a common swap but it requires mount modifications

  • @southgajeeepers2416

    I'm pretty sure your missing a thrust washer and a baffle but I'm sure you know that. I left that baffle out to be able to do what your doing. Cause with the baffle in you have to pull everything out to take shims out . We tried it both ways and it seems to last just as long with or without a baffle. If no baffleis installed it's a good idea to overfill the axle with fluid by parking on a hill or get a aftermarket cover with a raised hole.

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  7 років тому +1

      I honestly couldn't figure out how to get the baffle back in as it was bigger than either opening, so I just left it out. With my aftermarket diff cover the hole is a little higher so it should be good but thanks for the tip.

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  5 років тому +1

      This quick fix held for several months until the bearing worn down so much I couldn't tighten it up. New bearing and I had to tighten up the carrier backlash and so far so good. Also rebuilt the transfercase because the rear bearing was making the Driveshaft vibrate causing all these issues to begin with.

    Any reason you didn't want to just put your air impact on the nut to tighten it back up? My impact has 3 settings, I think the low setting is somewhere around 200.

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  7 років тому +2

      I think i did run it on with the impact but i never trust tools for final torque specs because that is very bad. It's best to finish the job by hand so you know exactly what you're getting. I just couldn't achieve the angles i needed to do it easily. a vehicle lift would have helped tremendously.

    I regeared my HP30 two weeks ago, on the way home my inner seal started leaking and was pouring gear oil out the tube! Had to tear it all down again to replace them. Worst part about it - I didn't replace them the first time because "they looked ok". That'll teach me....
    Anyways - I RTV'd the all the seals, including pinion seal, in hopes of avoiding leaks. So far so good.
    Question though: your pinion wasn't that loose when you first installed it, does that happen over time? What gave along the way?
    Thanks!!

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  7 років тому

      Same here, I ALWAYS replace the seals now, haha. The pinion was hopefully installed correctly the first time but the bearings just wear over time I guess. Not too sure but I'm driving on it for as long as I did with the vibes probably didn't help. I really should do the tcase bearing now but the might mean pulling the whole case which would suck, i'll have to check some time

    Hey Nick. First time for me making a comment. Love you vids man. Been watchin' them for a few months now. I've owned my '89 XJ Limited since new. Re-powered it in '04 with a fresh long block. I recently started going through her and fixing all the little things that have become inop over the years like power door locks, slow power windows and minor wear and tear. By your standards, mines a "Pavement Princess" I'm sure but it's nice to have a 4X4 just in case.
    Anyway, again, love you vids and keep 'em coming but please loose that claw hammer and grab a ball-peen from now on ;-D

    Is there a inner and outer shim pack on the pinion of the dana 30?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  7 років тому

      Yes, the inner shim pack is used to adjust pinion depth when setting up a proper gear wear pattern. The outer shim pack is what we are adjusting here which only affects rear bearing preload.

    • @TDirtysanchez60
      @TDirtysanchez60 7 років тому

      NickInTimeFilms where is the inner? Is it located between the inner bearing and the oil slinger?
