  • Welsh Terrier, who looks like a miniature Airedale, is steadier, more sensible, and less excitable than some terriers, yet still full of energy and drive. Like all breeds originally bred to be working dogs, the Welsh Terrier is an active dog who needs a daily walk and lots of playtime.
In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Welsh Terrier that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Terrier Dogs
    Weight: Up to 20 pounds
Height: 14 to 15 inches tall at the shoulder
    Life Expectancy: 10-14 years
Bred to hunt independently, with all the self-determination and intelligence that entails, the happy and lively Welshie rarely gets tired and wants to spend their days having fun, fun, fun! The Welsh Terrier is a cheerful, intelligent dog who loves to have fun and is always affectionate. He's energetic and has a playful nature. Loyal and devoted to his family, he can nevertheless be quite the social butterfly. The Welshie can be independent, which may lead to some training difficulties (especially with inexperienced owners). But this is usually offset by what most people love best about the Welsh Terrier: his happy, fun-loving zest for life.
Temperament is affected by a number of factors, including heredity, training, and socialization. Puppies with nice temperaments are curious and playful, willing to approach people and be held by them. Choose the middle-of-the-road puppy, not the one who's beating up his littermates or the one who's hiding in the corner. Like every dog, the Welshie needs early socialization - exposure to many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences - when they're young. Socialization helps ensure that your Welshie puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog.

Our Welsh Terrier, Moses, passed away 3 weeks ago and we are heart broken… he was 14 years 8 months and the sweetest, most loving laid back little guy. Outside he was adventurous, curious and loved to play, chase, climb trees, etc but once inside he was a total lap dog. He was great with my grandkids from the time they were born. He was always great with other dogs that visited. He loved everybody and everybody loved him. Even those that were not big dog lovers loved Moses. He was the absolute best!!

RIP Moses. But...pretty sure his ways - were 'cause of the owners(aka good ones!) and not just because - being a Welshie?

MY Welshie Rudy had all the traits identified. Although I live in an apartment he worked out well as long as I stayed on a schedule. But, he passed away 6 months ago and broke my heart. I had him since a puppy and he lived 13 years. So, I have a new Welshie named Ruby VI a puppy. We are just learning to get along and live together. My biggest advice if you live in an apartment or condo is scheduled walks and be consistent. I have also found that a smaller crate does not work. They need some room. So I have a large pen for a large dog and she Ruby does well in it. I love this breed of dog they are smart and will test you. When a Welshie loves you they are very dedicated.

We lost our 14 year old Welshie, Mischa, last fall. She was a tough, strong willed, little angel, but also a little stinker.
She was the companion of 3 large Airedales over her 14 years (90, 95 and 80 pounds) and was always the boss. Well, if there was food involved she knew better, but most of the time she was boss.
She was the sweetest little dog, always by your side, but a stinker as well. Had to put baby locks on doors so she couldn't get at garbage cans and always tested the underground fence to see if it was working. All of the Airedales learned the fence boundaries and never tested them once learned. She always checked to see if it was working. Never know,, it may be a good day to go on a little exploration.
I'd recommend a Welsh or Airedale to anyone who has time to spend with their dog(s). The pair is so cute, they look the same other than the size.

My welshie is 3 years old and has the loveliest gentle nature you could wish for he loves to play and has had the whole family mesmerised with his antics but I have enjoyed every minute of having him he is very sassy intelligent and super cheeky and when we are out walking a lot of toddlers think he is a real live bear his name is basil or quite often referred to as my treasure

How dynamic, sturdy, and tough is your Welshie?
Does their chasing instinct annoy you or do you think it makes them a keen watchdog?
Let us know in the comments!

I’m sorry for not responding sooner…we always thought his chasing stuff was fun… things like lizards, frogs, squirrels….the raccoons or armadillos were a bit scary…every year we made sure he got that extra shot to safeguard him from wild animal bites. We loved all his antics though. We found him one day on a limb in our oak tree about 25 feet in the air. Our neighbor told us he would see him up there quite a bit… needless to say we had an arborist come out that week and cut that huge limb off. Also explained why the squirrel population waned when he was here. Lol. We did get a pic of him in the tree cause we knew no one would believe it! Moses was always adventurous outside but a total love bug inside.

Hi, I m thinking about getting one but can’t make my mind up, I like both wire ft and Welsh ft, which breed you think it’s most stubborn and harder to train as well as which breeds suffers more from anxiety separation?

We have 2 welshies, they are about 5 months old from the same litter. Spot on for describing their personality! They are bold, stubborn, tough, and high energy. We got lucky, they naturally love all people and dogs. If you want them to be cuddly, Cuddle with them a lot when they are very small. Train the not to bite and do NOT let them fall asleep in your lap when you first start this.

My sister-in-law has one that's 18 years old. It would pester people endlessly to throw the ball and would fetch as long as anyone would throw the ball. If the ball were hidden it would destroy whatever the ball was hidden inside of. It was also a small animal killer. In other words, hyper like a Malinois - needs lots of attention and exercise

The kennel club recognised the Welsh Terrier in 1887, but it has been known as a Cutie Patootie as early as the 15th century.

My 13 year old female welshie is skittish as of kate. She jumps at the slightest sound, and sometimes jumps away from her food, and run away- as if she was spooked by an unseen villain! She also has restless legs, shakes/ tremors at random times. Is this indicative of hyperthyroidism?
