Ah yes. I remember fondly many nights on tour when Mendel would watch my fingers EXTREMELY closely and text me every time I messed up even the slightest thing. I'd be checking my phone on stage, and see messages like "WHAT WAS THAT?!?" It wasn't until the end of the tour, we recorded Mendel's guitar direct for a cool video project, and we listened to him ABSOLUTELY BUTCHER a solo. What a guy ♥️
Hahaha karma
BAHAHAHA I loved this lil anecdote
I rather butcher 1 solo vs butchering an entire show every night playing Nintendo sweeps and have Metal Busta Rhymes on vocals ❤️
(Jk, I truly miss ya).
Huh it got recommended to you too, Dean? When are you gonna appear on this show? :p
Lol he said bare with me then went a liiiittle bit faster then I expected.
He is v fast
Also “I have the worst memory” and then plays it almost more for note lol
@@TichUSC yes lol 😆
@@TichUSC yes lol 😆
he was about 100 bpm faster than I expected too
More videos with Mendel. This was as wholesome as death metal can get lol.
Would love to! Give us some ideas :)
@@BaenaCarcosa make the same song a few different ways. Like a metalcore, deathcore, death metal, math core, nucore, etc. versions of the same basic riff. That’d be interesting.
@@BaenaCarcosa kiss
Even through I will most likely never use this knowledge. This was a cool, fun, and informative video to watch!
Unironically the best comment I could ask for haha
Please keep doing this with other guitarists from other bands. Hopefully you do and can get some popular guys to go over some riffs
This is the aborted guitarist. What do you mean popular guys....
He was awesome in Aborted. Had an absolutely monstrous stage presence.
Always cracks me up, how high pitched his voice is, for someone so big and tall.
As a pure listener and complete non musician, this was a joy to watch. Y'all gelled well together as well. My favorite parts were when you'd deathcore-ize one of his riffs and he'd death metal-ize a deathcore riff. Probably my favorite video I've watched from you, Andrew.
The angle that Andrew is sitting at makes Mendel look like a giant compared to him
This was awesome. Reminds me of the days when me and my other guitarist would show each other riffs from slightly different genres. 🤘🏾
Deathcore after about 2012-13 really changed for the better, especially around 2014-15. The songs became more coherent and breakdowns became tasteful. Production really took off as well.
Yes, honestly metal can reach a point where it does just become noise. There's just way to much going on sometimes. I will listen to Pantera over slayer. 200bpm is not sustainable for a whole song for me.
Old school is really good if you like chaotic stuff like mathcore tho. New stuff is great too, it's a blessed genre
The Cleansing was peak Deathcore imo. I recognize this is probably the scene-boomer take.
@@dasenase tbh deathcore is one of those rare genres that has always been good, the proto deathcore from the 90's is fire, the early 2000's stuff like the cleansing is straight up iconic, and the new bands are evolving the sound and experimenting in super impressive ways all around, literally every era has been peak deathcore 🤘🏻
I honestly think deathcore bands nowadays kinda all sound the same mainly because of the production
This was sick! you guys should do more like this, it's great to see different but similar ideas and be able to get inspiration from both! Awesome riffs from each of you as well! Thank you!
Man, what a good episode. Super great to see guitarists just chillin and learning each other's riffs. Super inspiring!
“Who’s Chimaira?” Haha that was so genuine and funny! Great video Andrew! Felt much nostalgia watching this! Reminds me of the old days jamming with band mates.
Andrew Baena vs the man who made my entire childhood
This was oddly enjoyable and educational. I always love watching you play, but seeing the thought process behind different compositions is pretty damn cool. Please keep this series going.
Aborted is God-Tier death metal! Very few bands come close.
they did a nice cover of pantera's slaughtered.
Been listening to metal for a few months I take it
@@InveterateMendaciousness favorite metal band?
@@InveterateMendaciousness dood they’re good. Not my personal go to, but they release unrelenting albums. Newer stuff is kinda samey but they got that brutality
God-tier?
Behave.
Aborted is flat af.
God-tier is reserved only for the top echelon of records like Nespithe, Onward to Golgotha, Blessed are the Sick, Here In After, To the Depths in Degradation, Legion and The Red in the Sky is Ours.
I love that hes playing downtuned riffs on that Revstar. Underrated guitar
i learned so much watching this.
do more of these videos with other guitarists. we're all learning from this
Aaaaa I love Mendel a lot. Loved this dynamic!! 💙
This was aweome, would love to see more videos where metal guitarists talk about structure and songwriting
Thanks for the lesson! Entertaining and educational. This is full of great ideas.
This video is awesome. I love hearing and seeing the differences between the 2 genres from a guitar players direct p.o.v. Mendel's use of theory resonates with me well as i'm just getting into theory enough to actively use it in the writing process.
Great vid bro. Please do more of these
MENDEL! This guy fucking rules. Incredible riffs, incredible mixes, and awesome taste in guitars. Underrated channel and player.
This was really cool, please do more!
This was awesome!!! I never think about the differences when I'm listening to all these genres of metal, it all just rocks to me. But I can totally hear the difference here.
Great collab!
I absolutely love these two together
Awesome video thanks Andrew!
is it just me or does that Yamaha Rev sound badass for metal?
Right? Was really surprised how sick it sounded.
@@Mendelian I taught you how to play those riffs and of course you give the guitar all the credit...... NICE MENDEL, NICE.
Mid-output pickups on short scale guitars are one of the best pairings for heavy stuff in mid-low tunings. A little bit less precise sounding, but it makes power chords growl and palm mutes punch like nothing else. I use a Les Paul tuned to B with stock Gibson pickups for the vast majority of my death metal recording
@@SuffyANX With a bit of a setup adjustment I was blown away how much my 70s les paul sounds nearly identical to my "metal" guitar with fishman fluences
Very intrerresting video. Keep doing what youre doing!
i watch all these kinda vids for inspiration while i work on my solo death metal band. i have one album on spotify which sounds very amateur and i am determined to make my next one more focused and consistent. as well as longer!
Yes !!!!
Mendel is a kickass guitar player !!!!
Thanks Andrew for this video \m/....
There is soooo much value in that conversation between guitarists of two different genres, great video
Everyone's got guitar faces. This video is full of them and it's great.
Needed more "Grasping at the Unseen", but still an awesome video. Good to see more long form content from you mate.
Also, am I tripping, or was that Yamaha absolutely gorgeous!? I need one.
More Mendel! Have him show you some riffs from his solo material. He’s single-handedly bringing back neo-classical but with a death metal bite.
This is one of my more favorite videos educational, inspirational, fun, n just chill
I felt like I was in a garage listened to two bros just passing time with their guitar. thanks!!!!
Next : Andrew Vs Dean Lamb from Archspire.
Make it happen dude!!!
Would love to but it’s up to him haha
That'll never happen
@@dlxfuentes they did,. 4 days ago
Hell yeah! Necrotic Manifesto is my favorite Aborted album. Mendel is by far my favorite guitarist Aborted ever had.
I just started learning guitar and this is so inspiring. It looks like so much fun, I can’t wait to get to the point where this kinda stuff doesn’t go completely over my head lol
Just realize it takes many, many years to get to this level unless you’re really talented.
Andrew: "Here's my riff. It's pretty long."
Mendel : (Hears it once. Masters it.)
Mendel is an actual gem. Had no idea he was in any bands, i only knew of his solo stuff until this comment section lmao
I would love to see a part 2 with some Chimaira and Necrophagist riffs! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Yeah I just want a reaction video of Mendel forcing Andrew to listen to Chimaira
Also thank you for teaching me the musical vocabulary “motif”.. it makes me think of a “callback” in standup comedy. Gotta weave certain things all the way through to make something cohesive sometimes. 👍
This is the Collab I thought I would never see
Awesomeness and great synergy
I need more of this
very cool video ! mendel is a very cool guys !
I learned alot about Andrew that I never knew before. Still a great guy and musician . Stay metal 🤘
I watched a ton of Mendel's IR and Mixing videos. He's a pro.
You should do more of these.
That yamaha sounds so much sicker than expected, jesus.
That speed with control is wild
All started with Symphonies of Sickness for me.
I love Mendel, been jamming his solo stuff since Shaking Hands With The Devil, such an insane player! Glad you got him on your channel. Great video!
Mendel is a beast, I remember getting blown away for the first time listening to Retrogore
Such a banger! My favourite Aborted album. I was pretty gutted when he left them
One second of Mendels voice and I knew instantly he's Dutch looked it up and yes he is.
mendel is totally underrated, what a guy, what a player, technically unbelievable.
Deathcore, not my jam.
Death Metal though, omfg. I love it
I have such a huge smile on my face..... Not only cause I know the struggle from both worlds, My uncle being a die-hard through and through Death Metal genius with guitar skills that are seemingly unmatched as well as my cousin who made his way in Deathcore but secretly is the most talented extended range player I know, I myself well... I don't know what I play personally... I was brought up by both camps some days it's down picking as fast as my gear will allow, Other days I'm hybrid picking, Tapping..... Tossing in country riffs.... Improving to R&B playing classical all self-taught or by ear~ nonetheless I would love to be in this room taking a lesson from both y'all
I first heard of Mendel with his soundclick page. He has an epic 4 part Nile inspired Egyptian song called Pharos Empire. It absolutely crushes!! I still go back and check it out.
I THOUGHT IT WAS FULL SPEED, AND THEN HE SENT IT!!!
Pretty cool to see Mendel
make more of these!
Mendel makes Andrew look like a dwarf 😂😂😂. Great vids man 🤘🤘🤘
that exercise at the end that Mendel was doing seemed very fit for an autopsy
Death metal guitarist > Deathcore Guitarist.
Love you both!
What a legend
Chimaira slays! So underrated!
Mendel in tha houseeeee🤘🏼
With Mendel? Fuck yeah!
damn, that Revstar sounds siiiick.
He’s an absolutely goated death metal song writer. Also LOVE the riffs in Carcosa. Y’all go hard af
Picks are =, but not limited to stokes*
And also your riffs are killer
I like death metal and deathcore
That was awesome, and a big FUCK YEAH to Resurrection by Chimaira!
Cool video and topic
I love that Ibanez. Definitely on the wish list.
Fredrik Thordendalls signature Ibby I believe (Meshuggah)
@@OvergrownWithTheMoss ??? no
@@OvergrownWithTheMoss his is an 8 string, this is just a normal production 7 iceman
@@sexdungeoninteriordesigner5045 Yeah you right, Fredriks guitar has a silver pickup, they’re pretty similar though
Iceman baby; be warned though, both guitar and bass with that style have bad neck dive
This is sick
Great riffs, now Andrew needs to check Chimaira hah
Fun to watch
29:04 Oh My God, I LOVE Chimaira. RIP to those legends. Andrew, YOU NEED to listen to the Resurrection album. Empire is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Rob Arnold is still active on YT.
hey andrew, what gauge strings do you use for the 7 string?
Ressurection by Chimaira indeed has a good tier production. One of the best metal albums ever
Chimaira - Resurrection and HLB - Valde are two of the best mixed metal albums I've ever heard so those choices check out 👌
Mendel mentioning Resurection legit made my day. Chimaira is beyond underrated.
@@hms2407 Agreed! I love pretty much everything they did up through The Infection. Never really listened to the stuff they put out after that. Rob Arnold is one of my favorite guitarists of all time.
@@DJENTISNTNOTAGENRE Infection and everything before is pure nostalgia man. I still remember hearing them for the first time in Freddy vs Jason (along with early brutal Howard Jones era KSE) and becoming an instant fan haha. Rob Arnold is one hell of a player but to much of my suprise, finding out Mark Hunter also played guitars on some tracks simply blew my mind.
@@hms2407 Freddy Vs Jason soundtrack is so good! I actually got into Chimaira because they were playing a show with KSE I went to so I checked out a bunch of their stuff and was hooked. They were amazing live! I always forget Mark plays guitar, too. Do you know which songs he played on?
@@DJENTISNTNOTAGENRE yes, Mark mostly doubled rhythms for tracks on Resurrection. CHECK OUT THE STUDIO PERFORMANCE OF SIX. HE ALSO PLAYS THE TEREMIN WHICH IS SO COOL.
that yamaha is so fuggin CLEAN
I didn't realise people struggle when playing with left handed guitarists cos the first dude I jammed with as a kid was left handed and it was always just like when I would play in front of a mirror examining my technique (also trying to figure out what looked cool cos I was a teenager)
This is crazy cause I just started listening to Aborted a week ago!!
Fucking love Mendel!
im a year late to this lol Andrew living my dream over here sharing ideas with Mendel
I completely feel the guy on the left idk what I’m doing I’m just conspiring riffs that sound cool and heavy to me lol
It’s good to see people in metal creating bridges and mutual respect. I feel like the days when I was trying to play guitar for a metal band the cliche was I was emo loser for doing any chugs at all haha.
is this a series??? if not it should be!
Death metal teaches deathcore and vice versa. The world would be a better place lol
Yes!!!
necrotic manifesto is one of the best death metal albums of all time
Had to check the playback speed on the very first riff, holy crap that's fast lol
Ma boy Mendel!
