This song does have a definitive meaning: it's about celebrities who think too highly of themselves and put themselves on a pedestal. So you were right on what you thought the song was, good job vin! Next please do the day I tried to live or outshined by soundgarden
True, specifically he was referring to grunge "culture vulture" singers of the time who would stand on stage in that pose and pretend to identify with fans and put themselves off at their cultural savior. "I'm your grunge god, follow me"
@@jimigrunge exactly ... it was very trendy for vocalists to assume that pose on stage and in videos, and it bugged Chris lol
ThePowerOfFriendship Kurt actively rebelled against his labelling as the voice of a generation. Not sure where you’re getting that idea from
@@Salomon_G Nope, Cornell himelf said it was about celebrities acting like martyrs/victims when it was their own actions causing them to play victim.
Soundgarden - 4th Of July
Checkout Soundgarden Outshined or Slaves & Bulldozers for your next Soundgarden song
Yeah, Slaves & Bulldozers is really a monster of a song :).
Or Rusty Cage. Anything from Badmotorfinger really.
Exactly
Or burden in my hand and blow up the outside world and spoonman
Yeah
Chris Cornell said himself that they never liked being labeled a ‘Grunge’ band. He didn’t feel they fit into any genre. Soundgarden is Soundgarden.
Anto Redmond I feel like a lot of bands like to say that; radiohead rejects the rock label and slipknot rejects the nu metal label.
@@bludgerabled And Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead rejected the Heavy Metal label saying, "We play Rock N' Roll".
Agreed. I never really liked grunge. Loved Soundgarden. People can have their Nirvana, Peal Jam whine.
soundgarden is just soungarden man, dont label them as grunge, grunge is an era not a genre
Every band says that. That doesn't mean we have to take them seriously. Categorization exists for a reason.
Kim Thyil is an underrated guitarist, doesn't get enough credit.
When Soundgarden first hit we were trippin on his guitar riffs for sure. I’m at a loss for words to describe them but powerful is in there. You didn’t hear any other guitar like that, but you have to remember there was no internet with UA-cam. It was more word of mouth where I was because we were never sitting around watching MTV, we full time job looking hot girls to hang out with. You usually heard the song before they were on the radio but I did hear some new stuff on it. Bands like this spread like wild fire back then and it was all word of mouth. It was the “Have you heard this yet!!!!!” situation.
So is Chris. Just re-watched Jesus Christ pose fro seattle lallapolloza 92. Chris is bad azz on the guitar.
Soundgarden- "The Day I Tried To Live"
I agree.... Such a mountain of a song.
You've just heard one of the best and hardest screams in R'n'R history. Very very hard song for singing, what a beast he was... It would be cool to hear more your comments about singing in general.
Soundgarden was a band for almost 9 years before they became "famous" and their older music is like black sabbath, Zepplinish, hendrix etc..........
Talking about Soundgarden Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.. seen three of them live! and met and shook hands with Robert Plant too.
Badmotorfinger is very Sabbath influenced..
Saw Soundgarden live at Wolverhampton civic hall in 1994 for a tenner!
Outshine ,rusty cage, seem more universal appealing with out losing that awesome touch of grunge
It's time for Alice In Chains - I stay away. Great acustic sound and amazing vocals
that song is so amazing nice one!!
I remember, when this video first came out, everybody was all about Nirvana. The moment that I heard Chris belt out those lyrics, I was like "you all can have Cobain, this guy is my jam". Few people had the range and intensity that Chris Cornell could bring forth, and for that (among many other reasons) he will always be greatly missed.
You guys nailed the meaning of the song. I remember reading an interview with Chris Cornell in a magazine when Badmotorfinger first came out, and that was exactly what he talked about. His words were more aimed at "rock stars" but you guys get it.
He explains it here, where he says it's mostly directed at fashion models and sometimes rock stars.

Soundgarden - Beyond the Wheel LIVE 1990. Those vocals went nuclear.
In my opinion grunge is era not genre ;
Nirvana (closer to punk)
Pearl jam (closer to Rock)
Soundgarden and Alice in Chain (metal)
More like a commercial label
I have always thought it was more a fashion. Flannel shirt over dirt T-shirt, holey baggy blue jeans = grunge. The sound didn't really matter.
exactly, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains are alternative metal, as least in most part of their catalogue
apeu lur I have to agree but the only one I ever like was AiC but not all of it was heavy.
It was used to define commercially a harder rock sound that was as intelligent as it was hard rocking. Sound Garden to me has that Black Sabbath thing but even a more hard sound. More extreme.
Right on Vin ! Chris said that the song was about artists that behave like they were God, which he found very disturbing. So he wrote "Jesus Christ Pose".
And he was a real god when I saw him sing this live in a relatively small venue in Australia 3 decades ago before they blew up! still clearly remember it-ridiculous!
Temple of the Dog - Say Hello 2 Heaven
YES
Yeah
Slaves and Bulldozers is the song Rick Rubin played Rage Against the Machine so they hired Chris Cornel to form Audioslave. It’s a vocal lesson from hell. Awesome.
I'm happy Vin understood the meaning of this song. When Chris Cornell got asked about this song he basically said a similar thing. This is one of my favourites by Soundgarden mainly cos of the drumming. Sori too repetitive? Come on, that's what songs do
"Grunge" is more a cultural movement than a musical genre.
One of the most powerful vocalists to have ever put throat to song.
Soundgarden a awesome group and Chris Cornell awesome Singer, Jesus Christ pose such a awesome song back in 1991, when I was 25.The song is about Jesus going to the cross for us, what he did for us.And i think that the song can make a person stop and think how they are living. So sad that Chris Cornell passed away May he be with God at peace ❤
It's metal, Vin! Check out their album badmotorfinger; it's an incredible metal album! Slaves and Bulldozers, Outshined, Mind Riot, Holy Water, Room a Thousand Years Wide are all great songs and sonically differ a lot from what you heard from them so far. Superunknown is a sensational album too, but it is alternative rock so that's probably why you get that grunge feel by listening to black hole sun and fell on black days.
Room A Thousand Years Wide! Love that one.
And Birth Ritual!
You missed Searching with my Good Eye Closed!
he says its not grunge or metal...for me its always been just....................soundgarden.
they were just unique, like if you sounded like queen...then you were just copying queen..
same with SG, they sound like nobody but themselves, they are rock/metal/grunge or whatever, but for me they were one on their own.
they have no bracket or label..they are just soundgarden, the best band there ever was...
Ya, some of their early stuff almost sounds Thrashy.
This is more like Alternative Metal with a bit of grunge and stoner rock.
Slaves and Bulldozers- Soundgarden. Or Like Suicide
HELL YEAH!!! This whole album is a work of art!
Alice In Chains - It ain't like that
Soundgarden - Outshined
Soundgarden has some very Black Sabbath moments in their discography. Listen to songs like Birth Ritual, Beyond the Wheel and Gun if you want more in that direction. The entire Badmotorfinger album is much darker. I prefer their darker, more metal tinted songs over the more Beetles inspired songs like Blackhole Sun. This particular song and this particular album, is my peak Soundgarden. Badmotorfinger is greatness.
By the way, you were asking about The Mars Volta on Facebook. The beginning of this song reminds me of one of their songs with the bass and the trippy alien guitar work. You should listen to their song Drunkenship of Lanterns.
I completely see the mars volta-ness off this song. Love that band
Yup. Soundgarden obviously did this before The Mars Volta... but it’s all 60-70s jazz trip inspired sound. Both pulling from that... The Mars Volta definitely dipping into that more often. Especially on the Deloused album with Flea and John from Red Hot Chili Peppers on it. That whole album is one big trip.
At the Drive-In!!!
Beatles, not Beetles.
@@MontagZoso Don't care at all.
Soundgarden - "RUSTY CAGE"
I just recently discovered this song and I absolutely love it. Chris’ voice in this is special. I’m not Christian myself and I’ve definitely been approached by Christians who feel that I need “saving” and that’s kind of what this song reminds me of. Great reaction guys! 👌🏼👍🏼👏🏼🙌🏼💜🇨🇦
Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night (Live Unplugged)
Pantera - No Good
They should do a live stream of the entire Nirvana Unplugged album. I 👍
They should do the original Where did you sleep last night by Leadbelly
Mark lanegans version is better
None of these bands called themselves Grunge. Nirvana - Punk, Pearl Jam - classic American Rock, Soundgarden - Metal. Alice in Chains always had a grungy sound. Essentially they peaked together located in the rain city of Seattle and the world said thank you. Soundgarden on this record were nearly into the prog metal, ignoring the labels all these bands were quite different while sharing a mood/feeling. Expressing real human emotions. These bands also all benefited from a generation of great singers. I was 16 in 91, happy days. Saw them all live.
Soundgarden - Beyond the Wheel (Live in Germany 1990) Pleeaaaase
Well I think Grunge is more a label than a genre
Like a lot of the grunge bands had more like metal, punk, rock, hard rock etc. as their “genre” while grunge is more of a “label”
“Hands all over”, SoundGarden at its best
Soundgarden - outshined
Yes
You really need to listen to more Soundgarden. Their albums Badmotorfinger and Superunknown have very distinct sounds.
Soundgarden - Fell on Black days
Soundgarden - Beyond the Wheel (live at the Paramount 1992]
Another few great metal like grunge songs:
Nirvana - Negative Creep or Breed
Pearl Jam - Go
Silverchair - Spawn Again or One Way Mule
Speed-grunge or grunge-metal One of my favorite Soundgarden songs. The music is super intense.
Spunge. Gretal.
To quote Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden: “I never got this bullshit about Soundgarden not being a Heavy Metal band, they're a fuckin' Metal band for Christ sake" - It’s cool to see a Bruce give them that sort of Metal stamp of approval. Soundgarden was the most Metal of the big Grunge bands from back then. There’s a few people who might argue that Alice In Chains is, but I disagree because I think anybody who says that probably mostly has Facelift in mind when they make that statement. Or has songs like Man In The Box in mind. But that’s just one album. If all Alice In Chains’ albums sounded like Facelift, then I would probably agree that they were the most Metal. But when you look at their catalog, most of the Metal sounding stuff surrounds that album. With Soundgarden, their catalog is more consistently Metal. Obviously not all of it, but much more apparent than the others. Especially from their first string of albums.
As far as the meaning goes, I thought that was cool to see how Vin got the ball rolling. For the first portion of the discussion, it seemed like there was a little bit of confusion when it came to deciphering the meaning. But then Vin’s understanding just seemed to come outta no where, which was cool to see happen so suddenly. I was like “okay you’re definitely in the ball park”. Like on a cold to warm scale, you instantly came in on the “hot” end of the “warm” region. Then as soon as you started looking at pictures, boom, you’re already there. I was impressed. Like the equivalent of having a mountain covered in snow, and then one basic happening on this mountain was enough to trigger an avalanche. The information seemed to come to you in that sort of way.
"Badmotorfinger" is one of the heaviest albums ever recorded. You guys really need to check it out. Epic.
Black Hole Sun is not a good way to be introduced to Soundgarden.
That was later in their career.
Yes they had the capability to switch over a few times in songs.
Chris Cornell was an incredible singer, he had some great solo work too.
Roam a Thousand Years and Searching with my Good Eye are my favorites off this album.
The look on Sori's face when he told her about Kanye and Yeezus was priceless.
I've wanted you guys to do this forever.
Soundgarden’s early work has metal elements. Their main influence was Black Sabbath. It wasn’t until Superunknown when their sound shifted towards a more Beatles/psychedelic influenced sound.
20:57 I just heard wind & thunder coming from the same direction right where Ms. Sori was lookin'.
I better check my recycle can. If I gotta chase that thing down (AGAIN) I am not going to be happy.
This should be call No reaction xD your poker faces :D
"Limo Wreck" - Soundgarden and "Love Hate Love" - Alice In Chains
"I came into this song with a bias about what this song was going to be about..." That's a mistake.
You are close, however, to the meaning of the song. Kim Thayil (guitars) had this to say, “I think [Cornell’s] reasons were he was - ironically - sick of celebrities and rock stars who had pulled that vulnerable, suffering sort of pose and/or attitude on their fan base. Specifically, there were a lot of rock guys that did that arms-outstretched kind of pose; that sort of victim that’s suffering for their fans and their art. It’s kind of annoying. Chris took a stab at it, on some levels mocked it, and the irony fell somewhere else, I guess [laughs].”
"Ashton Kutcher is doing real work with sex trafficking"
I expect you will be hearing from his lawyers lol
Haven't heard this song in years, glad you did it. I played the Badmotorfinger album to death back in the day. Brilliant album.
You should have watched the video clip. That's pure madness
Hey guys, awesome reaction as always! Can't wait for my "Say Hello 2 Heaven" request! 😁
I worked for SOUNDGARDEN on part of this tour
Sounds like the earlier Soundgarden albums. Their sound changed and evolved over time. This album was the perfect blend of the old and new sounds.
This song was a dig at other rock stars/celebrities (Vin pretty much nailed it)...specifically many think Axl Rose from GnR. Of all the "grunge" bands I always thought Soundgardens music crossed over to metal more than others.
"I think [Cornell’s] reasons were he was - ironically - sick of celebrities and rock stars who had pulled that vulnerable, suffering sort of pose and/or attitude on their fan base. Specifically, there were a lot of rock guys that did that arms-outstretched kind of pose; that sort of victim that’s suffering for their fans and their art. It’s kind of annoying. Chris took a stab at it, on some levels mocked it, and the irony fell somewhere else"
It was Jane's Addiction actually, not GnR.
They need to react to a Jane's Addiction song...the album Nothing's Shocking is a masterpiece.
Tank you guys, i was waiting for these one.
Vin and Sori, I believe that this song is about his parents and older relatives in their Jesus like complex looking down on him because of his addiction.
"Like I'm driving the nails, nails, nails, like I'm driving the nails."
Is about him shooting up heroin. While his family acts so pure, just because they are not addicted like him.
Soundgarden is a metal band period
Saw this performed live in about 92, Coogee Bay Hotel, Sydney Aus, that intro with the drumming, bass, the lights in sync, was jaw dropping spectacular.
Please do Slaves and Bulldozers - Soundgarden
Marilyn Manson did that pic in a sarcastic way toward Self Righteous Christians. That's the cover from the Holywood album cover.
I think if you grew up listening to them starting with badmotorfinger and louder than love it wouldn't of been a surprise lol. Loved hearing y'all's perspective. Keep up the great videos!
Been waiting for this!
Love this song
Chris Cornell R.I.P. ❤
This is early Soundgarden and probably one of their heaviest songs. I've loved this song since middle school when I first saw the video. It's odd that a lot of people don't like it but I'm a metal head by nature so idk🤷🏻♂️
You want to hear the best intro ever? SKATENIGS, CHEMICAL IMBALANCE!!!!!!!
Rolling Stone called him one of the best singers of all time
soungarden is more metal than grunge
Specially the firts albums
what is Grunge anyway? are ALICE IN CHAINS more Grunge then SOUNDGARDEN?
Good stuff! Two more good Soundgarden tracks..
*"The Day I Tried To Live" and "Rowing"*
I've been waiting for you two to listen to more Soundgarden! The Day I Tried to Live next! Or Rowing
The Patreon crews need to work on getting them to listen to Jesus Christ by Brand New. I’d love to hear their take on it.
This was early Soundgarden. They were the founders of grunge music but they hated being called a grunge band. Just a tidbit of info. You guys rock!!!
Soundgarden: Slaves and Bulldozers
this is what Soundgarden were all about
Feel free to add "Rusty Cage" to Soundgarden songs you need to hear/react to. Similar sonic sound to JC Pose.
Listen to Rusty Cage, Outshined, Slaves & Bulldozers, Jesus Christ Pose and Room A Thousand Years Wide, that's a must.
This is really a one of a kind song, not the easiest one to listen to, but just amazing! Anyone comment on the amazing drums?
Far Beyond the wheel, live by Soundgarden,(The unbelievable performance)
But even better PANTERA: THROES OF REJECTION! 😁
Much love ❤
Love Beyond The Wheel!
The 2010 live version is my personal favorite
Live in Germany 1990 is my best live performace
My favorite Soundgarden tune, awesome!
I think the "you don't want to be my slave" is about celebrities wanting fame but not wanting to be hounded by paparazzi
Soundgarden - Slaves and Bulldozers, Birth Ritual
Great review. You are correct. Chris was referring to many popular singers of his day that were constantly in a “Jesus Christ pose” like they were some sort of savior. Always striking the Jesus pose was the easy way out to be and feel important.
As the singer of Iron Maiden Bruce Dickinson said, Soundgarden is a fuckin' metal band!
Awesome you two!
If you understand Chris Cornell, most of his songs deal about his struggles with his heroin addiction. Anthony Kedis also talks about his heroin addiction through many of his songs with The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
This is a good one. You should check out Room a Thousand Years Wide from the same album if I didn't know who Soundgarden was I definitely would think they were a metal band based on that song lol. Awsome band.
You can find articles on it, but this song was basically a dig at the rockstars of that time. One had a quote “he was - ironically - sick of celebrities and rock stars who had pulled that vulnerable, suffering sort of pose and/or attitude on their fan base. Specifically, there were a lot of rock guys that did that arms-outstretched kind of pose; that sort of victim that’s suffering for their fans and their art.”
4:32 - thru end of song---- this is such a candid reaction. look at these two. It found it a bit boring until the lyrics started. but once it got going- wow, haha. I love it.
Arch Enemy - We Will Rise + Fields of Desolation (LIVE Tyrants of the Rising Sun 2008)
Ironically enough, for most of us who were kids back when this music came out, this is what you think about when asked what Soundgarden actually sounds like. "Black Hole Sun" was the departure from their usual style, not this.
Janes Addiction- three days
Yes! Yes! Yes!
This song is so epic!! Love it!!! Genius from start to finish!!!!!
-The song is a criticism of how public figures use religion (particularly the image of Jesus Christ) to portray themselves as being "better" than others, or as "martyrs".
Chris Cornell specifically mentioned Jane's Addiction's frontman Perry Farrell as an influence on the song, explaining, "It became fashionable to be the sort of persecuted-deity guy." In an interview with "Spin" in 1992, Cornell explained the term "Jesus Christ Pose":
"You just see it a lot with really beautiful people, or famous people, exploiting that symbol as to imply that they're either a deity or persecuted somehow by their public. So it's pretty much a song that is nonreligious but expressing being irritated by seeing that. It's not that I would ever be offended by what someone would do with that symbol."
Listen to Pretty Noose or outshined. It's more "soundgarden sound" although this is also their style on earlier stuff.
SoundGarden- Blow Up The Outside World
Grunge is not only a genre or a fashion, it's an attitude
Badmotorfinger is a pretty metal oriented album by Soundgarden. It's abrasive in all the right ways and I love it.
If you do more Soundgarden videos I'd suggest: Limo Wreck, Let me Drown, Room a Thousand Years Wide, Tighter and Tighter and Overfloater
Good GOD...his VOICE could peel the fucking paint off the walls
