I went with my friend group to see this, we probably smoked a doob on the way, and nobody but 2 of us knew what the movie was about and multiple times when we looked over at the group it was just tears streaming down. All genders, just tears. I started tearing up when I saw this title like do I want to cry right now? I'm crying.
I saw this film in a movie house and I was stunned by the story and the beautiful cinematography. And the soundtrack. The soundrack is beautiful. One of the many details I love most is that her house is at the center of her Hell in an upside down cathedral ceiling. You can see the arched ribs intersecting in the vault keystone, near the house. The vault keystone is the piece that sutains the ceiling ribs in middle age gothic architecture, for example. And she is at the center of it all. Her Paradise is a colorful painting, vibrant, warm, full of life, space and happiness. Her hell is an ashen, cold stone, dark, lonely, painful and silent old building. I love it.
My mom showed me this movie when I was a kid because I am an artist so she thought I'd love it. Heaven in this movie is beautiful and without realizing I fell in love with the movie because of the subject matter. Now that I'm older and had my fair share of grief, loss and Robin passing away it definitely hits different. One of my favorite films of all time.
This movie isn't more appreciated or well known because it was just too emotionally powerful for most audiences to handle. I personally think it's one of the best movies ever made.
I agree. Don't take this the wrong way but this film is like Schindler's List to me in that it is a stunningly beautiful movie about aching events of humanity that hit close to the heart and although I love it, its just not my pick most nights and a little much to go through that ride too often. Every once in a while though...
I agree. I remember watching this movie once on tv, years ago, and I haven't been able to watch it again since. It feels too much, especially now as an adult and having a little better understanding of life and loss, and also I feel more emotional now, it's a powerful movie. It's beautiful but I think I need to be mentally and emotionally ready to watch it all the way through again lol.

I could see that the film really got to you, James; As a film-maker yourself, that means that the production team have got you to suspend belief too. It shows the power that a well made film can have, exactly what attracted me to the whole idea of cinema in the first place!
I'm thrilled that someone finally told you about this. I knew at the very least that you would geek out over the special effects, so I'm happy that you enjoyed the film as a whole. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. 🙂
I know this is a wee bit late.... but I've watched a TON of movie reaction videos, from countless reputable channels and THIS one right here may be my favorite!!👏👏👏 Not sure what I enjoyed more, remembering all these awesome scenes from this masterpiece... or hearing and seeing your reactions to them. It's been a minute since I've sat down to re-watched this gem but I sorta feel like that's Exactly what I did here with your reaction video. Idk about you, but watching any Robin Williams movie since his passing... is just DIFFERENT. It hits on a different level. His career work stands on it's own, easily one of the true and genuine Legends of cinema. And watching a movie this powerful, with such heartfelt and believable acting, reminds me of why Robin Williams is one of my favorite Actors. The emotion he's capable of portraying by facial expressions alone.... is simply Brilliant. Loved all the input to gave during the movie and I couldn't agree more. Well done friend. Cheers
I almost squealed out loud to my fiancé here is Seattle when I saw you were doing this today. I’m getting ready to watch. I love so many of your reactions, but anything Robin Williams is awesome, and this is a REALLY special one. The Fisher King is also INCREDIBLE. Please consider doing it, as nobody has. The cast is stellar, as is the script. It’s one of Robin’s personal favorites. You are a fantastic reaction guy and I know you will make great movies someday. Take Care and do more Robin…ANYTHING! 😂💜. Take Care!
This came out just after my mom chose to Go. I love it, but also still cry even watching others react. Not all the themes hit right for me, but that wishful thinking part of me still wonders all the "what if" scenarios. It breaks my heart, all these years later.
Man, I've watched this movie once, probably more than 15 years ago, and I've forgotten so much. I am certainly due for a rewatch. Especially since I have lived so much in that time period.
I remember watching this at 8 years old and crying now I’m 31 and a dad and I cry every time I watch this. It’s movies like this that make you feel and think about life.
Saw this in theaters, and the visuals on the big screen were AMAZING. I have also never seen that many people just bawling their eyes out in a theater before or since.
This was one of my mother’s favorite movies when we were growing up, and I don’t think I’ve seen it since she passed. Thanks for this video & reminding me of it again.
Definitely a fantastic movie, went into seeing this with no knowledge of it in the theaters and loved every moment. There's an alternate ending that they ditched at the last second as it was just a touch heavy where the two would be reborn but she'd have a condition that would have her die early and he'd have to live most of his new life without her
James, thank you for this reaction. Thus film is very special to me as it is based on a novel by who I consider one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, Richard Matheson. I still cry at certain scenes even after 20 years.
just watched Fisher King and now seeing you do this is awesome! I miss Robin in dramedies. I think you'd love that too James, there is mythology pathos and grounding with fantastical elements as well that just work... he absolutely kills hills role in that too. Some amazing lines, both in friendship and love.
I don't normally comment on reaction videos James, But on this one I will. This film is quite literally the most underrated movie of all time. Its a movie that was given a hard time. I believe it didn't do well financially as many Americans are religious, Christian, and the message in this movie is more of a spiritual message, not the normal religious orthodox one . I believe in an afterlife and this sums up pretty much to me what an afterlife is. I believed it before the release of this movie. It just makes more sense to me. And always has. Its all about mindset and the power of emotions. You are my favorite reactor as you are clearly very genuine. When you said you was tumbling on your words, you weren't, you went into deep thought from that moment and channeled your deep rooted feelings and emotions on these matters. Thank you for sharing your true feelings. I hope one day I could get to meet you. You are a good genuine guy. If you are ever around my way in England give me a shout I can show you some amazing places. Keep it up.
Thank you so very much for reacting to this film, it is my all-time favorite. I really wish that more people would react to it. I gave this a like before even watching just because of the title.
honestly this is a movie that changed the way i saw life and death. this movie holds a special place in my heart and the fact that i got to experience that again with someone like you, who can appreciate the art and significance of a film like this, makes me appreciate no only your recations but just having reactions to experience these kinds of emotions with people across the world. thank you for reminding me of that. much love james.
Thank you for your transparency on this one, man! The film makes those deep cutting life thoughts & -feels so accessible. So any good drops of wisdom, too! My favorite; "thought is real. Physical is the illusion." WHAT
I'm do glad that you did this movie! It has always been one that would make me cry, but I haven't been able to sit through it since we lost Robin. It makes all the scenes talking about grief and depression that much more heart rending. But that's what this movie gives us. A beautiful example of processing grief and death. Better than any other film. Thanks for helping me get back to one of my favorite movies of all time.
YES! I've been Hong hoping you would get around to this movie. It is an underappreciated gem. There is so much to love about this film from the themes to the art direction to the acting. Thank you James for your sharing in this reaction.
Wanted to share that the name of this movie comes from the Shakespeare's Hamlet. It's part of the soliloquy from Hamlet when he gives his 'to be or not to be' speech. That whole speech deals with madness, death, the fear of the unknown, love, and torment, redemption and rebirth. It's amazing to me how the writers, director, and actors were able to take that relatively short speech and use it as a theme to craft a whole movie. Loved this movie since I first saw it when it first came out. Knew nothing about it going into it except that Robin Williams in it so I was sold. Whew lad did I not know what I was about to watch!
The first time I saw this movie was in my high school painting class back in the early 2000s. Ever since that moment it has been one of my favorite films. It is so beautiful. I wish it were more widely known and appreciated. So happy to see when someone watches it.
My first encounter with this story was a random pull from the fiction shelf at my local library in 1980 or so, a few years later, a person I love very much was in a suicidal depression and I wanted to find that book for them! I couldn't remember the title, author, or exactly which aisle of fiction I'd picked it up-- that didn't stop me from searching. And searching. And searching, for years. To no avail. Fast forward twenty years and I randomly rent it at the video store (because of Robin Williams, not because I recognized it). I was completely blown away how wonderfully it was translated into film! No small feat! I was finally able to share this masterpiece of concept and creation. And now, here again, another twenty years has sailed by and I meet it again in my first stop into your channel. It has me looking around for the reason... Thank you for your choice and reaction, from this new subscriber.
I've been requesting this for over a year now in the several channels I watch. Thank you for sharing this with others. It's one of those hidden gems ppl never heard about. Like when I mention American history X, or Waking life.
I’m soooo happy you did this movie! It’s been one of my favorites since I was little. Between the visuals, the performances, the story, there’s so much to love
One of my absolute favorite movies. So gorgeous, heartfelt, heartbreaking yet hopeful. If there's no such thing as death and if life after death is anything like this then I look forward to reconnecting with all my loved ones when my time comes. So happy you got to watch this for the first time and enjoyed it!
The first time I saw this movie was close to after losing my father and meeting my now husband. It was both a wonderful and horrible time in my life. I was not in the best headspace and seeing this movie was both deeply hard and healing all at once. I can't watch it without crying but it is still one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. It deals with loss and grief in such a raw and truthful way. 🖤
Love this move. One of my favs ever. Beautiful cinematography, design, great cast and performances. I saw it for the first time as a depressed teenager. Resonated with me very similar that what i perceived coming from you. Never understood why many critics hated it.
I first saw this movie as a kid and it blew my little mind. This was back when I barely understood the concept of life after death and it just opened my mind to so many things, made me think differently after seeing it. It also somewhat emotionally scarred me, it was beautiful but so many emotions I didn’t know how to handle. I didn’t see this movie again until I was an adult, and I’ve probably watched it less than ten times (it’s one of my fav movies ever) and I cry every single time I watch it. Truly a beautiful and thought provoking movie
Loved the reaction. Definitely one of my favorite movies. It has played into the fabric of my being and understanding. This was awesome. Glad you got so much out of it.
One of my all time favorites! Great reaction James and I love your message at the end! Thank you for your reactions! They are allways a pleasure! Greetings from Germany!
I have always said this is one of the BEST FORGOTTEN AND LEAST TALKED ABOUT FILM EVER. I think the reason it is never talked about is because NO ONE wants to confront their mortality.
I don’t usually comment on videos, but this one hits home. I saw this movie as a kid in the late 90s on TV, and I instantly fell in love with it. We bought it, and I’ve seen it so many times since then. When Robin Williams died, everyone either thought of Jumanji or Mrs Doubtfire. This was his movie that I thought of that I grew up with and adored, especially with the subject matter, his death hit pretty dam hard. Either way, I love this movie, and I love watching you experience it brother!
I've always tried to get people who love Robin to watch this, this shows his acting ability at it's greatness, keep up the great work bud, from dundee scotland
Thank you for reminding me that this movie exists. I used it watch it a LOT but I only ever had it on VHS so I kinda lost track of it a while back, but now I think I'm gonna have to get a new copy. It's such a beautiful, powerful movie, and story, and even through the darkness of the wife's suicide it's so uplifting... This, The Fisher King, and The Caveman's Valentine are three of the most criminally underrated movies I've ever seen.
This film was so formative for me, watching it as a kid, it's so nice to see someone else blown away by the visuals, the editing, the acting, it's such an incredible movie Thanks for your reaction!
I’ve only watched this film once and cried my eyes out. This back in 2019. Haven’t been able to watch it since my dog passed away in 2020. Certain feelings remind me of him. But I do really like this movie and I think I’m glad you reacted to it.
This has been a film I've returned to again an again every year or two since I first saw it. On more of the visual/technical filmmaking side (not story) this film reminds me of Pleasantville in a way. Different techniques are used in both films to create a unique visual look as a means of telling a powerful story. You should also check out Pleasantville if you haven't seen it yet.
This was always one of my favorite hidden gems for years. Haven't seen it in a long time. I just recently lost my father and then my sister weeks later. Then shortly after my 10 year relationship ended. I'm still in a place where I can't accept everything or haven't had a chance to grieve. Watching your reaction, although painful at times, helped me to get some of the tears out. I'm not gonna go on to much of a rant but there is another film with Kevin Costner called Dragonfly that evokes similar feelings although quite different. Thanks for this.
Almost a quarter century after its release and this movie still gives me hope. One of the most beautiful and heart wrenching films I’ve ever seen, and deeply personal too. Thanks for sharing your reaction to it 🌟
I bought this dvd back when it sight unseen when it was released in that format. The cinematography, and message it was trying to convey hit me in many ways: - as a friend, I’d lost great ones young and it was jarring. - as a person, I’ve lost memorable pets - as a vet, I lost of people I knew - as a kid, I saw crack throw people into hells on earth - also, losing all but one grandparent by the time of HS graduation, and the most memorable childhood memory being my dad’s father giving daily reports of his day, his kids and all of us grandkids, to an empty bed after his wife, my grandmother, passed away when I was in 4th grade at 56yo. I felt then what loss and love was like. Seeing this movie literally rocked me when I bought it, because it gave a small glimmer of hope that at the end of the run, it seemed possible that I’d see loved ones again, and maybe, just maybe we could have another run at life. It also Reignited my interest in photography, making me want to create images of the like. This was a great film IMO.
Ooooohhh I love this movie, it's one of favs, really sad, yet wounderful. This film has amazing special effect too. It's a precious treasure and full of meaning. It will have you crying, both happy and sad tears.
i'm glad you watched this, james. i love this movie. i don't know how many times i've watched it but everytime there are certain moments that just always get me. the scenes where he recognizes his children, especially when he finally reallllly sees his son inside Cuba Gooding's character. i just love that part. even though this movie brings me to tears, i just love it. the ending always makes me happy. 🥰💙💜
Thanks for this and being you, sharing yourself and your feelings, on film and more importantly, life. As always stay awesome, stay genuine.... much love
I saw this in the theater when it was released. I started crying when the kids died and sobbed until well past the end credits. Such a beautiful movie.
There are very few movies I've watched with so much pain and yet so much beauty at the same time. This hits me every time and brings up so many emotions and can be a hard watch at times yet I try to bring myself to see it every couple years as it is a masterclass in movie making. This was probably the movie that awakened me to Robin William's genius as growing up I was accustomed to his more comic roles in Mrs Doubtfire and Hook. Thanks for reacting to this James, truly.
Lovely to see you reacting to that film. I would have watched it under some kind of influence but just with your kind voice near. Haven't watched it in a while. But surprised me many times already. Rest in Peace Robin
This is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen -- both in regards to the story and the progression that the characters go through, but also visually, it's an absolute feast for the eyes. I tell everyone I know to watch this, but to warn them to have tissues handy because it always succeeds in making me cry at multiple points. I don't think I saw it in theaters, but I did see it not too long after because of my love of Robin Williams, and it's a film I come back to time and time again.
We randomly found this movie and bought it because of Robin Williams; I don't remember much from it because I was very young when I saw it. I just remember my family didn't like it and thought it was depressing, I remember I liked it but didn't say anything because of their reaction to it. But years upon years later, I don't even remember why. It takes a lot for me to not like something, and I think I even fell asleep during it (because of sleep issues for as long as I can remember). I didn't fall asleep because I didn't like it I just never slept normally, so sometimes I would essentially pass out during the day because my body was trying to make up for my lack of sleep. Anyway, I'm glad I could revisit this film because of you, thank you! I want to definitely rewatch it as an adult now
We first watched this film when I was around 11 years old. My mom and her husband thought the second half would be too scary for me, but eventually let me watch it. Two years later my step-dad passed away, and three years after that my father died as well. It's strange to think that we watched this tragic story about loss and love and ultimately in a way it would touch my mother and I more than we ever knew. I'm not religious anymore but I still hope there's something beyond, I think it's natural to want it, most of all to be able to see the people you love again. It makes me tear up just remembering the film, it's one of my favorites of all time.
"The real hell is your life gone wrong" That line always stayed with me
Damn right.
And every time I see this movie today, I have to think how Williams never escaped his....
It’s the truest statement!

@@JamesVSCinema Giant Norwegian Blue rabbits. They're real sweeties, but a shock to see!
Ever since I found your channel, I've wanted you to react to this film. Gorgeous, soulful film. Love it.
MY FAVORITE BOOK OMG. I'm so glad you're reacting to this movie *gathers snacks and swings feet happily*
Didn’t even know it was a book adaptation!
@@JamesVSCinema It's EXCELLENT for shedding some light on the many aspects of love, death, and grief. Highly recommend!
I know this is a wee bit late.... but I've watched a TON of movie reaction videos, from countless reputable channels and THIS one right here may be my favorite!!👏👏👏
Not sure what I enjoyed more, remembering all these awesome scenes from this masterpiece... or hearing and seeing your reactions to them.
I love this movie so much. I rewatched it (and Hook) right after Robin's death and bawled my eyes out.
I saw this film in the theatre and it blew my mind, I've never forgotten the impression it left upon me. Thank's for your reaction James.
Saw this in theaters, and the visuals on the big screen were AMAZING. I have also never seen that many people just bawling their eyes out in a theater before or since.
Also, this film has my favorite depiction of hell in any film, ever.
Lastly, and I'm sure it's already been said in the comments, but be sure to read the book if you get half a chance!
just rewatched this, great review
This was one of my mother’s favorite movies when we were growing up, and I don’t think I’ve seen it since she passed. Thanks for this video & reminding me of it again.
Excellent choice. Will definitely check it out after work 👍🏼
Have a great day at work Debby!
@@JamesVSCinema thanks I did. And really enjoyed your reaction. This is a great film to come back to.
I just love everything about this movie. Thank you for reacting to it.
Totally can see why!
just watched Fisher King and now seeing you do this is awesome!
Keep it up.
I appreciate these words Barry. I plan on hitting up England sometime so who knows brother! May be sooner than later!
This movie is definitely underrated. Powerful experience.
Like when I mention American history X, or Waking life.
love your work dude. amazing vibe and perspective. nice
Appreciate that my friend!
I saw this in theaters. It's INCREDIBLE and worthy of significantly more praise.
Definitely one of my all-time faves - like an emotional, moving painting
The first time I saw this movie was close to after losing my father and meeting my now husband. It was both a wonderful and horrible time in my life. I was not in the best headspace and seeing this movie was both deeply hard and healing all at once. I can't watch it without crying but it is still one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. It deals with loss and grief in such a raw and truthful way. 🖤
I've been recommending this FOREVER... glad ya finally did it
Hahaha it’s finally here! 🙏🏽
@@JamesVSCinema it's a beautiful movie, Robin was/is a beautiful soul
I saw this about 20-22 years ago. And it still blows me away. It’s absolutely beautiful. One of my favorite films ever.
This is why we love a great story. be it in a book or on a screen, a truly great story can reach in and touch us in the deepest parts of our soul.
One of, if not the most beautiful films I've ever seen. From story to design to performance, just beautiful.
I love your post-film commentary. It's more upbeat and positive than the film itself! It really does make my day.
Love to you J! 💯0/0
This film was so formative for me, watching it as a kid, it's so nice to see someone else blown away by the visuals, the editing, the acting, it's such an incredible movie
Thanks for your reaction!
I’ve only watched this film once and cried my eyes out. This back in 2019. Haven’t been able to watch it since my dog passed away in 2020. Certain feelings remind me of him. But I do really like this movie and I think I’m glad you reacted to it.
I follow a bunch of reactors and you are the only one to have chosen this film, great choice!
The cinematography, and message it was trying to convey hit me in many ways:
- as a friend, I’d lost great ones young and it was jarring.
- as a person, I’ve lost memorable pets
- as a vet, I lost of people I knew
- as a kid, I saw crack throw people into hells on earth
- also, losing all but one grandparent by the time of HS graduation, and the most memorable childhood memory being my dad’s father giving daily reports of his day, his kids and all of us grandkids, to an empty bed after his wife, my grandmother, passed away when I was in 4th grade at 56yo.
GREAT CHOICE! I love reactors who are smart enough to find and react to the hidden classics.
i'm glad you watched this, james. i love this movie. i don't know how many times i've watched it but everytime there are certain moments that just always get me. the scenes where he recognizes his children, especially when he finally reallllly sees his son inside Cuba Gooding's character. i just love that part. even though this movie brings me to tears, i just love it. the ending always makes me happy. 🥰💙💜
Thanks for this and being you, sharing yourself and your feelings, on film and more importantly, life. As always stay awesome, stay genuine.... much love
I saw this in the theater when it was released. I started crying when the kids died and sobbed until well past the end credits. Such a beautiful movie.
Watched this on a whim when in like 2012. Legit one of the most emotional and beautiful movies I've ever seen.
Yes, this movie reaffirms soul. Glad you like it
This is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen -- both in regards to the story and the progression that the characters go through, but also visually, it's an absolute feast for the eyes. I tell everyone I know to watch this, but to warn them to have tissues handy because it always succeeds in making me cry at multiple points. I don't think I saw it in theaters, but I did see it not too long after because of my love of Robin Williams, and it's a film I come back to time and time again.
This is one of my favorite movies. It is so beautiful. I'm glad you are watching it.
