All the Ouachita Trail shelters I’ve stayed at or seen (a great many of them) are just wonderful. The Friends of the Ouachitas have done a great job making the whole trail special.
It’s kind of nice to do it in reverse like this so that you get the uphill switchbacks out of the way first and you have the shelter up top as a “destination” versus getting that out of the way immediately and leaving yourself the torture of the climb for part two. 😂
It’s maybe 800’. The first time I did them they seemed unreal. Anymore, they do t seem AS bad, but they certainly do ask for a pretty slow pace of me. 😅
Not at all. These are generally lands that are protected from development and preserved for the creatures that live there as well as for people’s responsible enjoyment. Humans should not leave any trace of their presence there. If you’re interested in off-grid living or building any sort of structure you will need to purchase land and build on the land you own. Public lands and Wilderness Areas are strictly off limits.
I'm surprised how nice that shelter is

Cool to see the hike in reverse from the way that we did it with you. Love those Ouachita Mountains!!
Oh those switchbacks 😱

About how much elevation gain are those switch backs!? Looks like a great hike thanks for sharing!

How far is the vista from winding stair shelter?
It’a around three tenths of a mile down the ridge.
Is it ok to build a log cabin on those trails?
