  • Ride along as we check off the Oklahoma and New Mexico sections of the Trans America Trail.
    Off the TAT Website:
    "Oklahoma starts in Westville, OK. The first 100 miles is part of the Ozark Mountain foothills, with short rolling hills and dirt based roads. At Bartlesville, the countryside opens up and soon becomes open range. Most of the roads are on a one-mile grid with an intersection at each and every mile. Most of the intersections here do not have a stop sign, so be very careful of crossing traffic. On a dry and clear day, you can see the dust from an approaching car a half-mile away.
    There are several “TAT Stops” with welcome signs on the road. If you are using my maps, all of them are marked with names and phone numbers. These people invite you in for a stop or help if needed. Oklahoma is a fun section with fast, open roads. It’s “open range” so be very careful of the livestock, as they will be on the road, and give them respect. Watch your fuel supply along the way and enjoy the pan-handle. If you are caught in a rain storm, you will have miles and miles of sloppy, difficult to traverse, mud. In this scenario, find pavement heading west and bail out.
    Oklahoma ends just west of Boise City at the New Mexico state line."
    "The New Mexico section of the TAT is fairly short, at only 72 miles. You’ll be starting on Hwy #18 at the state line of New Mexico and Oklahoma, which is just a few miles west of Boise City, Oklahoma, and ending in Branson, Colorado.
    New Mexico is a mixture of dirt based roads and hard-packed gravel. When the roads are dry, the riding is fast and can be dusty. If the roads are wet, then you’ll be dealing with slippery, sloppy mud.
    At mile marker #56.77, take a right turn and head up several switchbacks to the Colorado state line. If you miss this turn, you will end up at a ranch and you do not want to do that, so stay on the trail.
    New Mexico includes the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, complete with incredible rolling hills and valleys."

    I live about 15 minutes south of Newkirk OK, in Ponca City, It’s definitely flat and straight west of us for the majority of the state. Haha. The east side of the state all along the AR border is worth a visit.
    Thanks for not shitting on OK. We have a beautiful state

    When you were in Beaver, OK you surely saw the Beaver Liquor Store. The sign is famous for obvious reasons.

      Using the official maps, but doing a lot of scouting for campsites, ahead of time

    Maybe I'm an idiot, but what do you mean "my maps" in your description? Did you use the official TAT website pdfs or you have your own?

    • @OverlandPioneers
      @OverlandPioneers  9 місяців тому +1

      I used the TAT official maps. Then spend a ton of hours using satellite imagery along the route to make my own to find camp spots.
