2022 SE Quick Take: Active Grill Shutters - An Unexpected Result!

- Things about my 2022 Mini Cooper SE.
The goal of today’s quick test was simply to verify when the active grill shutters open and close at the start and end of a trip. I did not try to verify if the shutters would open/close at speed because (1) the weather was mild (71F / 22 C), and, (2) I did not have time to drive long enough for the motor to get warm and possibly trigger the shutters to open.
I’m glad I ran the test, because I discovered a big problem!
UPDATE 02/28/22: @JonR on the Inside EVs forum investigated the attachment points for the shutter assembly, and it is not well done. Make sure to check your shutters periodically to make sure they have not pulled lose. Detailed photos here:

UPDATE 10/14/2021: If you own an SE, go and GENTLY push on your active shutter assembly to make sure it is properly attached to the bumper! I dropped my Mini at the dealer and there was a new 2022 SE sitting out front. I greeted the service rep and showed her how my shutters were loose on the left side, and I suggested we go check the new SE. The shutter assembly on the brand new SE was detached on BOTH sides. My assembly has been reattached under warranty - no charge.

Hey I'm a little confused, in the video the passenger side of the grill appears loose, is this the left side of the car or the right? Thanks , I look forward to the rest of your content.
@@tomscala7672 On my USA Mini the passenger side was loose - as you stand in front of the Mini and look at it, it's the left side.

Why did British Racing Green change? It used to be dark, non-metallic.
Mine is loose on both sides OMG I didn’t even know the car had this….. when I push very hard on the mountains it restricts me power, maybe it is closed as yours in the video…. I’m calling for a fix.

my 2023 SE has the same problem, the right side is loose
I have a 22 also and the left side was loose. It’s a simple fix. Just remove front shield under car and pop it back into place.
My 2022 SE also have the left side shutter loose. What if is a bad design and after I fixed the wind will take off the shutter again?
I just checked the shutter on mine… And it was loose also!!
You are the third, then. I will report back from the dealer whether this is by design or not. Owners of the 2021 SE have said their shutters are connected on both ends.

My service appointment is tomorrow. Another 2022 owner at Inside EVs forum said their assembly is also loose on the left side. I hope it just needs to be attached and is not actually damaged.

No - I had the dealer do it. I believe the cover under the bumper has to be removed to access the area. I did not research how to do that.

Yes, I’ve checked. It is solid. I believe it’s a factory assembly problem.

Is what standard? Active grill shutters? I believe they are on all trim levels.
I ripped mine off my cooper s, it's pointless
