    Thank you Richard!! Understanding the dynamics helps (me…) a lot.
    Got a 5th reason for retaining the trans. If I’ve got a manual, I get to ENJOY being more involved in the drive.
    And being a bit detail oriented, I’d get to be part of getting it to run at good efficiency, and power, when needed.
    Thanks again!!

      @@ev4u I did have a question for you: how can you tell how many gears and what ratio of gears you need to run better? Is it more gears is better always? Or maybe with EVs you need less gears and can ramp up to faster ratios or something?
      Also.. i know very little about transmissions. Do you just hop clean over car trans to use a beefy truck transti handle the extra torque? How do i go about matching a motor to a trans for a project. Im sure it has to be a strong one but the beefier you go the more weight youre adding probably. How do you not overshoot the target and pick the right trans?

    Back in the eighties as a fleet mechanic at a phone utility we had 12 ford courier pickups with 20 six volt lead acid batteries. They retained the four speed and the clutch. Only twenty miles of range but you gotta start somewhere.

    For a classic conversion a fifth reason is the retains the driving personality and dynamics of the car. I still shift all our conversions. There is a myth that transmissions reduce efficiency in EVs, even though there is engineering studies proving a 15% increase in efficiency. You don't need as many gears do to the wide power band of an electric motor. This is much of the reason the Taycan always exceeds the EPA rating on the highway.

    Thanks Richard, and I'm glad to see this video very much! I was wondering if you could talk about a scratch-build car in your next direct drive video. I've heard from the community (for what it's worth, some yahoo on social media or whatever) say that direct drive is better for a non-conversion build. When I eventually build a car, I'm going to coachbuild it from an existing chassis, so the sky's the limit as far as the planning. Is there a benefit to going direct drive in that scenario? Regardless, before I do any of this, I will be attending one of your classes, lol, but in the meantime, if you could touch on that it would give me a direction to think it over.

    • @ev4u
      @ev4u  Рік тому +1

      The #1 reason (voltage) does not change. Direct drive will require a higher voltage system and a more powerful motor.

    A transmission is a MUST in any conversion, it represents many advantages for either speed or torque. It is also a safety device. Writing this before watching the video.

      Nice video but you didn’t mention SAFETY as a great advantage in a transmission.
      It could be nice to show those charts for the DC Systems: ADC 9”, Warp9 and 11c Kostovs, with the multiple controller options and voltages from 48V (I’m running a train at 48v moving 70 people in a park), then 72, 96, 120, 144V and then the super high voltages 200, 250, 300 or more that the Zillas can handle… destroying world records as well as motors in those attempts

    Pls do a video for EV conversion with an automatic transmission, with AC-50 Motor and Curtis 1238. And also how would you incorporate a VCU 200 by AEMEV, into your setup.

    Great video! I always don't believe in EV oem designer, who drop out the gearbox. Next step is put the gear box into EV to increase 3-4 time the range of the EVs

    • @RP-hn1qc
      @RP-hn1qc 12 днів тому

      That's not how things work.. regardless of gear ratio your load (aero and friction drag) is proportional to your speed. The only reason gasoline vehicles gain efficiency using a gearbox is that the ideal power band is rather limited range where peak torque starts.

    Does axial play when the clutch is pressed damages the electric motor?

    • @ev4u
      @ev4u  8 місяців тому

      No it does not.
      Note that the clutch is only used when shifting between gears and the motor bearings are able to handle clutch thrust.

    Could you talk a little more about security? I know that if a controller fails it gives all the power to the motor. In that situation, clutch is important to diaconnet the motor but in emergency, if you turn the key switch off you will turn hidraulic brake off and power steering off too, is that correct? What can we do to stop a car safety in this emergency situattion? Thanks a lot for this great video.

    • @ev4u

      An AC inverter/controller will not fail in a full power scenario. However, that is possible with DC controllers. We used multiple layers of protection including throttle operated safety devices, an emergency disconnect switch, as well as the clutch. DC conversions are covered in detail in our Online EV Workshops. www.EVWorkshops.com

    I would probably rank it like this
    (for keeping a manual transmission in an ev swap/conversion):
    1) Fun/ relaxing.
    2) Efficiency.
    3) Voltage.
    4) Cost.
    5) Ease of conversion.
    6) Weight balance.
