Director Andrew Stanton explained why he used excerpts from Hello, Dolly! (1969) in an interview: "When I got to 'Hello, Dolly!' and I played 'Put on Your Sunday Clothes', and that first phrase 'Out there...' came out, it just fit musically... I finally realized, 'You know what, this song is about two guys that are just so naive, they've never left a small town, and they just wanna go out in the big city for one night and kiss a girl. That's my main character.' And then my co-writer, Jim Reardon, said, 'You know what, he could actually discover an old tape in the trash, and that's how he got inspired by it, and it's a great way to show that he's got a romantic slant.' So we started looking at the movie, and when I found the other song, 'It Only Takes a Moment', and saw the two lovers holding hands, I realized, 'That's a perfect way for my main character to express the phrase 'I love you' without being able to say it.'" The vacuuming robot that follows WALL-E and EVE has a robotic version of the song "Put On Your Sunday Clothes." It's the first two lines of the song's chorus in electronic form. Stanton had portrayed Barnaby Tucker in a 1980 high school production. Jerry Herman allowed his songs to be used in the film without fully realizing how or why. When he saw how they worked in the film, he claimed it was "genius". To explore the possibilities of pure visual storytelling, Andrew Stanton and the Pixar team watched every single Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton movie, both short films and features, every day during lunch for about 18 months.

John Lasseter, the founder of Pixar, is a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli movies. He was inspired by Ghibli's style of story telling and animation techniques to portray emotions realistically. That's why Pixar movies can some times give you Ghibli vibes.
@@gabigote1439technically he is. While he’s not evil, his actions go against the wishes of the captain and others. The captain outranks AUTO and he made it clear he wanted to go home.
@@BalrogQuote that directive is only valid if no life can survive on earth. Considering the directive was over 700 years old and the fact plant life was growing makes the directive completely invalid. Therefore the captain still outranks AUTO
Auto is a reference to H.A.L. from 2001: A Space Odyssey, along with the music they played for the captain’s first steps. Also, you might be to young for this, but the sound played by WALL·E when fully charged is the Apple iMac boot-up sound.
Up and Wall-E are two of the most haunting commentaries on Human society, and in the form of children's movies. The people who put these films together deserve lifetime achievement awards.
The ending of the movie was a lot darker, as in the original script, Wall E encounters a race of Jellyfish looking Aliens, who visit Earth, find a half buried Statue Of Liberty, in a parody of Planet Of The Apes, as it's revealed the aliens were once human, having mutated after 2,000 years due to being in space for too long, and the statue shows them what they once were, centuries ago.
(going off memory) What I love about Wall-E is that it conveys all this real emotion, especially in the first without a main character speaking a word ... Not many movies can do that. If I remember right, there isn't any characters speaking until they get to the ship, besides singing on a TV maybe or a Buy-N-Large TV announcement? Love love love Wall-E
This movie was extremely well done for a movie with no dialogue for the entire first half.. except for him occasionally saying his name. It’s so charming and it is really remarkable how much emotion they can get out of these robot characters who rely on vague vocal sounds and abrupt movements to get things across. absolutely love how this wasn’t a “ robots took over the world and now our world is shit” trope. This was an environmental problem and by the end it’s actually encouraging the importance of the earth, vegetation, proper waste management, and also human physical health. It’s also highlighting the importance of natural human interaction. All things in this movie is just a call out for social change and showing what the world might become if we continue to neglect these things. Adding this super charming animated robot friendship and romance and how THEY are the ones that initiated the changes that allowed the humans to be able to get off their asses and begin to recover from decades of laziness, that brought hope back. I just love that. The robots weren’t the enemy and showed just as much( probably more if we’re being honest) humanity as any of the human characters in this movie. This movie reminds you that the earth and people are precious, and that we should not take any of it for granted.

This is my absolute favourite Pixar movie of all time - not to mention the best love story - ever. Great reaction guys. Thanks. Have you guys ever seen 'Bolt'? I feel it is a bit undersung among animations - I would definitely like to see you react to that one.
I think there used to be a BnL website. Maybe there still is? It gave some background on the world, my two favorite dystopian details being: - Buy n Large was once two companies; one sold ice cream, the other sold extra-large clothes. They joined forces when they realized that selling more ice cream meant selling more extra-large clothes too... - Buy n Large bought north. The direction. All compasses on earth are now required to point to "Buy n Large North". They called it "directional marketing".
Micro-gravity is a real concern with space travel today; spending long periods in zero/low gravity results in loss of bone/muscle density, along with general stamina loss. ^The thing is, the Axiom has artificial gravity, so "technically" they shouldn't have that problem :P
You guys have to do the short BURN-E, it takes place from the side of that robot working outside the Axiom, his entire time throughout the movie is unfortunate.
@@jillfromatlanta427 Me as well, it doesn't do much but the robot has it far worse especially around the end of the movie, I hope they get around to it.
My favorite Pixar movie. If I remember correctly, the sound design was done by the same people that created the sounds for R2-D2 for the original Star Wars. Also, the movie was a bit predictive of the dangers of becoming too immersed in social media. Fun fact, the voice of the ship’s computer was Sigourney Weaver. Also in the end credits, Eve and Wall-e are staring at a beautiful tree, and as the camera pans down, you see its roots, originating from the boot. That’s what the plant became! The first 30 minutes of this film are a masterpiece of storytelling with no dialogue. Loved watching your reaction!
Wall-e is easily one of the greatest disney films theyve made. I remember watching this as a kid and I fell in love after it finished. So much love and dedication put into the film. Epic reactions guys, keep up the awesome work!
I feel as if Eve uses nanites to help change the form of her body parts, the glowing circuitry on her which you can see faintly on the Axiom when behind or next to the towel rack might be connected to that while also just doing things circuits do.
All the "2001: A Space Odissey" references are cracking me up 😂😂😂 when Auto "kills" Wall-E you can even hear the theme from the movie. And he's 100% designed after HAL, the OG killer AI
36:58 It's funny you should mention this, since the track playing in the background was actually the theme song back in the day in a commercial for the Nordic diaper brand Libero Up & Go, which showed a baby taking its first steps...
I can't say enough good things about this movie it's so good. I remember as a little kid being impressed by the reflections Eve has when she's in Wall-e's crib. So clean and detailed. I Løve Eve's sounds so slick and hypermodern. I would say futuristic in the context of 2005 or 2007 or whenever Wall-e was made, but it's like she's a brand new iphone and wall-e's a blackberry 🤣 Eve's giggles are so cute and her voice is so smoov I wouldn't say the stearing wheel/captain bot was a villain he was just following direct command protocol like the potus ordered. In a way it was right, just by the miracle of a small plant growing the plant should be dead by the end of the movie haha. 🦖🐉🐉🐉
I was watching you guys watch this and my mind just kept going to a movie that I couldn't remember for the longest time that had such a deep memory imbedded in my mind. Short Circuit. Which is also about a robot gaining emotions and I couldn't remember the name of it until my dad reminded me. I just hope you guys know this movie or are willing to watch it at some point because it's such a sweet movie with a very similar vibe as Wall-E.
I love the messages in this movie. The possible future of our planet with advancing technology and the pollution of our planet with trash and garbage. The effect of it, destroying our vegetation, animals, and planet. Robots trying to be in control of the "rogue" robots. When in reality, they're like Wall-E, they were becoming human and getting personality. Which means they were not following their "directives", which is what Auto is big about bc that's how he's made. It kind of makes him a narcissist if you think about it, so set on following the rules and being robotic. But bc Wall-E had personality and more human, he was able to learn and adapt to fix himself and make a home. The other Wall-Es pretty much worked till they died and never stopped their directive. And in the end, the "Rogue" robots were the ones to save the day with the people, working together. Which is what the credits showed, saving Earth, people and robots working together, which is amazing and so creative.
The coolest thing is we have these little critters that will eat the plastic and we have got alot of garbage out of the sea with these special capture stuff so we're doing something right.
When I watched this movie for the first time I wasn’t a massive fan but the more times I’ve watched it and gotten older I actually really love this movie… and Wall-e is just adorable!!
This has been my favorite Pixar film dince it came out. I remember going to the theater to watch it with my sister. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it. Some people mark out when they see an R2-D2 in real life, I wanna see a Wall-E in real life.

WALL-E, M-O and the majority of the male robots' voices are done by Ben Burtt, the sound effects guy from the six first Star Wars movies who created the blaster shots, R2-D2's voice, Darth Vader's breathing, the lightsaber sounds, etc. He also created the sound effects for the movie and unlike most movies, he was brought onvery early in production. For EVE's voice, it's Elisa Knight, a Pixar employee, who also voiced Tia (one of Lightning McQueen's twin fans in Cars), being run through a Vocoder. WALL-E's voice was Ben's voice being synthesized on computer to change the pitch.
have you seen a movie called 9? its an animation about fabric rag dolls, to be fair for the disney princess thing, mulan isnt royaly or married to a royal either but i think shes officially classes as "princess" because of the amount the movie made, BUT eve cant be given the princess title because one of the rules is that she has to be human (side eyeing ariel)
The sound you guys hear when Wall-E is charged is the first Microsoft Windows opening with sound from the 90's, before windows 95' I think. Search it. Wait, or was it a Mac... And I totally agree, she is a princess, for me is the best love Disney story on my book.
Guys, if you liked Wall-E, you've got to watch a pair of 80's movies called Short Circuit and Short Circuit 2. Wall-E is CLEARLY the great-great-grandson of Number 5 from those movies.
In case you didn’t notice, I think you did, but, the reason Wall-e has the lighter when in the trash compactor is because he kept it because Eve was so enthralled by it.
I highly recommend you watch the Disney documentary on how they produce the sounds. It's beyond amazing and they show you how the most simplest of things such as closing a door can lead to a sound you remember in the Disney movie.
The moment where the Buy and large is being advertised/taught to the babies, is actually accurate when you watch Super Size Me, where a woman highlights that most children in America, before they can talk, can already say "McDonalds." That was back in 2004.
Really love this movie. It creates a sense of greater comunity, an universal experience of humanity. And, coming from a country so different from yours (Brazil), I like that everyone can feel the same about this. And watching your reactions is so cool, you pay so much attention to details and seem to really care about all the characters, seem to really enjoy the experience with great humour. Also the friendship you show to each other is so nice, it really helps to create a good mood. If you guys are still looking for more apocalypse type movies you should watch “War of the Worlds” (2005) it’s finally on Netflix with Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning - it’s an alien invasion kind of movie and it’s REALLY good
My fav animated movie, I think. Two things..1) when the DVD came out, the subtitles ticked me off, because WALLE said "Eve" every time he mentioned her name - NOT "Eve-ah" which is what he always says!!!!...and 2) on the DVD there is a short called BURNE, based on the little welder robot fixing one of the exterior lights when WALLE and EVE arrive on the spaceship. It is delightful and the short compliments the movie and vice versa!! Try to see it sometime.
I know it's not an original thought or opinion, but I truly believe that some of the Pixar animated movies (and animated movies in general) are made for adults. This movie was not anywhere close to being one of my favorites as a kid when it came out. I didn't understand the implications of the movie. Watching it back as an adult, it's moved high up on my list. We talk about this movie a lot in my sociology class, and there's a lot to talk about regarding human behavior (the path of least resistance, how larger institutions shape the day-to-day life of people (capitalism and the Buy n' Large company), and many other facets of this movie. I'm happy that y'all enjoyed it too! It's such a fun and interesting watch when you are old enough to put the themes in perspective.
I love how wall-e is in the supermarket and eve saw wall-e, wall-e know he get caught because eve have weapon and wall-e scream and run, after run wall-e want to open the door and eve saw wall-e scared, and get hit by 19 cart, and eve see that and ignore it, and the door open ( at part 6 and at the start, and wait for a little and you can see what a said )
The reason WALL-E have live action elements for the past is that director Andrew Stanton wanted to use the clips from Hello Dolly!. Another reason is that it would feel more impactful with live action humans being transformed into fat animated humans (in contrast for having slightly caricatured animated humans becoming fat animated humans). Originally the humans actually have been devolved into gelatianous blobs called gels (based on a theory that if humans stay in low gravity for several generations will be devolved into slime) but people had hard time relating to them so they were tweaked until they became obese humans with stubbier fingers and toes, more like "big babies". The animators still refered the humans as gels throughout production. The first version of the movie, while the first act was basically the same throughout production, was really different, more like Spartacus plot with the robots being slaves to the tyranical robots who treated them poorly, such as shooting them with a laser gun for little to no reason, and WALL-E inadvertily starts a rebeliion against the gels, with the movie ending similar to The Planet of the Apes. This was deemed too weird so the plot was changed to the what it was in the final version. Auto was originally a different robot similiar to EVE in design but more "calculated", aggressive looking. An earlier version of had Auto going to the archives which was formed like a brain and watched the history of how Earth got polluted, the progress of Operation Cleanup up until the CEO gives order A113. This was moved to the Captain's quarters later in the film, as A. it stopped the flow of the movie. B. The Captain needed to know this into along with the audience for act 3. Also the Captain was a lot lazier and "couldn't care less" attitude to the point that he wore his hat upside down and even couldn't read the instruction manual because he was reading it upside down so Auto had to flip it upright for him. This made The Captain seem dumb so he was made smarter and the hat was sitting a bit loose until he decides to order Auto to go back to Earth. An earlier version of the garbage disposal had EVE being shocked by Auto and badly damaged with WALL-E saving her. M-O and the WALL-As saved them similiarly as the final movie but WALL-E fixes EVE by replacing a part of her damaged "heart" with the lighter he showed her on Earth. Stanton realized that he made a big mistake and asked the animators to reanimate parts of this scene and the third act so that WALL-E was damaged instead, which made him much more braver when he attempted to stop The Holo Detector fro going down and getting crushed by it. It also served as a motivation for both the broken down robots, the Captain and other humans to help against Auto, as how WALL-E have affected them earlier in the movie.
THE LEGO MOVIE IS COMING LET'S GOOOOOOOO But seriously, I've noticed some Pixar films are just short silent films except feature-length and with dialogue; romance, beautiful settings, a surprisingly deep/dark message or B plot, etc, and I don't think I've seen that better exemplified than with Wall-E. This movie is just feature-length short film and you will not convince me otherwise.
Some funky trivia for you, the design of Wall-E was inspired by the 'saint' robots in Short Circuit (1986), another overlooked film that's worth watching, but one you shouldn't watch the trailer for since it spoils quite a bit.

It's a cute film but at the same time extremely thought provoking
Love AUTO as a villain, as hes not evil. Hes just following his directive like every other Robot on Ship
Hes not really a villain
I mean you're right and I would agree with you, if it weren't for the fact that Auto almost murdered Wall-E right in front of Eve's face
@@gabigote1439technically he is. While he’s not evil, his actions go against the wishes of the captain and others. The captain outranks AUTO and he made it clear he wanted to go home.
@@joshuawillis602 given the directive that was to go full autopilot and never return to earth, Auto would be outranking the captain after that.
These guys are older than me lol idk how they didn't recognize that
Up and Wall-E are two of the most haunting commentaries on Human society, and in the form of children's movies.
Well that’s too dark, this almost seems like the ending of Artificial Intelligence.
Well, thank you for the interesting fact and now if you excuse me I'm going to go cry
Here’s a fun fact: WALL·E actually does talk!! Turn on subtitles they’re hilarious
We were watching with subtitles!
You guys should react to 9! It’s such a good, yet mildly horrifying movie that everyone seems to have forgotten. There’s about 1-2 proper reactions to this movie on UA-cam, so I would love to see what you guys think of it! Great reaction as always :)
Seconded, 9 is a hidden gem
Third, 9 is fantastic!
Fourth, 9 is a way to go
Fifth, absolutely yes...
9 is for the Portal and Wall-heads, and features a third... "friend" to add to your list
This is my absolute favourite Pixar movie of all time - not to mention the best love story - ever. Great reaction guys. Thanks. Have you guys ever seen 'Bolt'? I feel it is a bit undersung among animations - I would definitely like to see you react to that one.
Kudos for being the only reactor to correctly interpret WALL-E telling EVE about the parts on Earth in the garbage airlock scene lol
Can you imagine there's a movie who actuarlly makes you care about a cockroach xD
This is such a good movie, thank you for reacting to it!
It's an oldie but a goodie! 😊
This one is one of my all time favorites, so beautiful in every aspect.
Amazing how much emotions can be transferred without almost no words. Love this movie
Wall-E is a wonderful love story, but don't overlook the Captain--one of the most unlikely Heroes you will ever see.
this movie legit made me cry near the end bro 😭 it was dramatic, funny, and with a deep message.
Fun Fact: the opening scene as well as the live action segments were done by Industrial Light and Magic.
I think there used to be a BnL website. Maybe there still is? It gave some background on the world, my two favorite dystopian details being:
- Buy n Large was once two companies; one sold ice cream, the other sold extra-large clothes.
29:55 captain: "where's the grass"
you: "it's in your hand"
unexpectedly profound
The movie goes without saying, but even the end credit sequence is my top favorite out of any movie.
You guys have to do the short BURN-E, it takes place from the side of that robot working outside the Axiom, his entire time throughout the movie is unfortunate.
I love that short!
@@jillfromatlanta427 Me as well, it doesn't do much but the robot has it far worse especially around the end of the movie, I hope they get around to it.
If you haven't already, check out Burn-E. A Pixar Short about the welding robot that got stuck outside.
Holy shit NOW I recognize her !
I love MO at the end. WALL·E is one of my favorite movies.
Wall-e is easily one of the greatest disney films theyve made. I remember watching this as a kid and I fell in love after it finished. So much love and dedication put into the film. Epic reactions guys, keep up the awesome work!
Wall-E is an all time favourite. No dialogue, still great film like that horse movie. Spirit.
Wolf Children has the best mother in animation history
The original/deleted A113 scene is so much darker compared to the final release
I feel as if Eve uses nanites to help change the form of her body parts, the glowing circuitry on her which you can see faintly on the Axiom when behind or next to the towel rack might be connected to that while also just doing things circuits do.
oohh!! sponsored!!! congrats guys!
Thanks!!!
This is one of my favorite movies! Your reaction alone was enough to make me tear up
I love how the A113 Easter egg is just directly in your face in this movie, especially compared to other movies where its a bit more hidden~ Lol.
All the "2001: A Space Odissey" references are cracking me up 😂😂😂 when Auto "kills" Wall-E you can even hear the theme from the movie. And he's 100% designed after HAL, the OG killer AI
This alongside UP and Monster Inc are one of my most favourite standalone Pixar movies. 😍
If the robot ai uprising ever actually happened I don't think I'd mind if they were all like wall-e and Eve
When my family got a Roomba, we named it M-O after the cleaning bot.
Wall-e was one of my favorite Pixar films as a kid
The sound that Wall-E makes when he’s fully charged is the chimes from a Macintosh starting up.
This is the Disney version of Fallout.😂 I totally forgot how adorable and so sad this was, only saw it once.🥺🥺
I would say futuristic in the context of 2005 or 2007 or whenever Wall-e was made, but it's like she's a brand new iphone and wall-e's a blackberry 🤣
Eve's giggles are so cute and her voice is so smoov
I wouldn't say the stearing wheel/captain bot was a villain he was just following direct command protocol like the potus ordered.
In a way it was right, just by the miracle of a small plant growing the plant should be dead by the end of the movie haha.
🦖🐉🐉🐉
Wall-E is a mini Johnny 5.
Have either of you seen Life of Pi? 7 noms, with 4 wins...Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Directing .. one of the noms was for best picture. Worth a watch one day if you haven't seen it.
15:58 If you look closely, he actually does get charged up from that
WALL-E, M-O and the majority of the male robots' voices are done by Ben Burtt, the sound effects guy from the six first Star Wars movies who created the blaster shots, R2-D2's voice, Darth Vader's breathing, the lightsaber sounds, etc.
Wall-e is genuinely one of my favourite love stories. It's so darn sweet.
I love this movie so much!!
the sound designer is the same guy who did star wars
The sound you guys hear when Wall-E is charged is the first Microsoft Windows opening with sound from the 90's, before windows 95' I think. Search it. Wait, or was it a Mac... And I totally agree, she is a princess, for me is the best love Disney story on my book.
Great movie grew up watching it
So many people weren't ready to cry from this!!!
Thanks for highlighting our brand! We hope the 3 winner of our gift boxes will enjoy their goodies! ✨ 🎁 ✨
Glad to have you!!!!
I really wanted One of those awsome technical chairs
Why run to the TV when you have a massive super adorable chair/tv/relaxing too ❤️❤️💋
I don't know if you've tracked down the Walle Shorts (quick animation videos) but they are well worth a watch.
I can't wait!
31:27 i speculate that this isn't the first time Auto tried to do something like this, especially if no other Eve probes came back positive until now.
This is my favorite childhood movie. Every Friday after school. Good times 🥲
And I'm learning a lot from your thoughts about animation techniques, it's nice to have this perspective about our favorite movies.
Hugs from Brazil! 🇧🇷💫
I originally was going to skip this movie when it cam out until I heard that Ben Burt did the sound design. So glad I changed my mind.
If you guys are still looking for more apocalypse type movies you should watch “War of the Worlds” (2005) it’s finally on Netflix with Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning - it’s an alien invasion kind of movie and it’s REALLY good
Hey there! You might like to watch the movie "Short Circuit" (1986). I'm quite sure, Wall-E's design was inspired by that one.
37:00 It’s more than that. Did you hear the Space Odyssey music? This is basically the next step in human evolution.
MY CHILDHOOD I am positive this movie has been repeated the most out of all the Pixar movies thanks to my little brother.
I love how wall-e is in the supermarket and eve saw wall-e, wall-e know he get caught because eve have weapon and wall-e scream and run, after run wall-e want to open the door and eve saw wall-e scared, and get hit by 19 cart, and eve see that and ignore it, and the door open ( at part 6 and at the start, and wait for a little and you can see what a said )
Agreed. Better love story than everything.
This movie was so wholesome.
Best Pixar movie IMO. And make sure you watch the short BURN-E.
People in this movie is Kinda how i saw americans until i was like 21 😂
The reason WALL-E have live action elements for the past is that director Andrew Stanton wanted to use the clips from Hello Dolly!.
This movie was a favorite of mine as a child
THE LEGO MOVIE IS COMING LET'S GOOOOOOOO
But seriously, I've noticed some Pixar films are just short silent films except feature-length and with dialogue; romance, beautiful settings, a surprisingly deep/dark message or B plot, etc, and I don't think I've seen that better exemplified than with Wall-E. This movie is just feature-length short film and you will not convince me otherwise.
There is a Disney short about that robot that got stuck outside. After the dancing scene.
“First time watching”
i love wall eeee thank yooou. love your reaction ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Some funky trivia for you, the design of Wall-E was inspired by the 'saint' robots in Short Circuit (1986), another overlooked film that's worth watching, but one you shouldn't watch the trailer for since it spoils quite a bit.
The Mac computer mice robots are called REM-E after Remy from Rataouille.
