  • My friend Keith rode his Honda Monkey motorcycle from San Diego to Chicago, only stopping for a couple of days to hang out with Gary and I above Montrose. He rides a highly modified Honda Monkey specifically engineered to pack small so he can carry it with him when he is working.

    10:40 - The accusatory tone when Don asked, "What made you think you could do this to a monkey?" provoked severe shame and guilt in me, and I've never even had monkey pox.
    Keith is awesome! He and Garrett are both doing these small bike cross continent adventures, but on completely opposite ends of that spectrum. I'm celebrating this diversity. The modded 300 cc Monkey is great. My hat is off to Keith. Great story Don. Thanks for sharing this with us. This is the content that I love. Bonus points for the drone shot when Keith arrived and threw out his tent, and the drone outro as Keith departed camp.

Greatest place in the United States for a bike like this. 113mpg real life driving full throttle most the time crusing 45-60mph every day to work 46 miles round trip = $2/day work commute... Amazing

      The monkeys have a cool old school look right? For little expense the 142 cc big bore kit is the way to go to get more power. Makes a noticeable improvement and it comes with a new injector. You can add a new cam if you like and you will not over stress or over heat the engine. I blew up two 181cc big bore kits before deciding to have Wayne swap out the 300cc. Takegawa exhaust also cleans up the underside to give more off road clearance

    This video is the coolest Monkey video I've ever seen so far! Thank you for making this! I am from Estonia and have a banana yellow 2019 bike. All the best for your friend and his Monkey!

      It has performed very well so far- 20,000 miles. Very reliable. Ran just fine at 155 degrees Fahrenheit for 3 solid hours outside Las Vegas at highway speeds and a heavy load. Weakest link of the bike is now the rear tire. It is speed rated to only 63 mph but the bike can go much faster so I rarely push past 70mph due to fear. Also when the monkey is really weighted down I only get 3k miles on a rear tire. Then again it rotates 1.8 time for every 1.0 rotation of an average sized tire. I have no better long distant road tire options. Monkey makes me feel 15 years old again. :)

    That's a lot of weight to be putting behind the rear axle. I'd be worried about death wobble, but then again, I don't know how fast he can get to going on that thing. The rack loaded down has to be affecting his handling in a negative way.

    • @G8rquest

      I'm thinking the nut between the handlebars and seat pin the front half down pretty good.

    • @ka509
      @ka509 2 роки тому

      Yes that can be an issue. I always pack heavy/dense items closest to me on the bike's rear rack. Trailer itself is light. Light things like tent, air mattress go in and on the trailer. Death wobble is situationally dependent. When going 60+ mph and passing semi trucks the side air compression can create a wobble. So in general I try not to pass and keep a large space cushion to avoid dramatic maneuvers. At low speed and off road I barely know its back there.

      That Sherpax trailer from Kipmoto in Vancouver is impressive. But swap out the Chinese bearing for a better quality one if you want to run above 70mph. Also a Michelin tire replacement. Knobbies are not needed for a trailer. After those mods, I hooked it up to my honda cb1100 and ran at 85mph to 95mph for 900 miles with the trailer loaded with over 100lbs which is 30lbs beyond the welder's specs- had no problem. I put the wife in the trailer for a ride around the block too- very entertaining. :)

  • @fixento
    @fixento Рік тому

    Cute, but no thanks. After looking at the turning radius with the rigid trailer impossible for a quick avoidance maneuver, reduces bikes top speed, I doubt if it over forty mph, and lengthens the stopping distance. If you drop it, I assume you have to unload it to prevent undue twisting stress on the rear wheel arm to raise it. The monkey is not designed for all this excess weight, regardless if a heavier rear spring is installed. How he keeps enough weight on the front wheel to prevent tank slapper is a mystery or due to low speed the bike can achieve. Cross county, not a forty mph, even on back roads you putting you life at risk at 40 mph.
