It's so sad when you realize that Billy had no business being in a mental hospital. He obviously has some issues, but he easily could be living a normal life. It's heartbreaking.
The hospital, or more specifically Nurse Ratchet, did more harm than good to Billy. It's good that he had McMurphy. McMurphy seemed to understand Billy. He was like an older brother to him.
Agreed. Even the actors who didn't speak very much still contributed a lot just through sheer presence and facial expressions. A masterclass in performance.
Nicholson is spectacularly good in this film (even for him), but I'm convinced that part of the reason he's so great is because he had so many wonderful other actors to play off of in this movie. Stellar cast.
It's a great film but everyone who appreciates it MUST read the book. The power hits you in a way no film could ever dream of. That book changed my life
@molamolalaaa2968 I responded with the idea that in order to destroy the chiefs father who was in charge of the tribe on the falls which was an ancient power structure the new US totalitarian regime had to attack the masculinity of the tribe leader, it gradually ground him down over time using toxic feminine methods, the chief was emasculated by the sane process and ended up in the mental institution and could see nurse ratchet using the same methods on Mcmurphy as was used on his Father when he was a boy.. basically I see it as a warning against toxic femininity and the danger of a society losing positive masculinity as a foundation upon which a stable system can flourish promoting positive femininity. I see the book as a forewarning for our civilization today. Basically we are in a system exactly like what the chief describes in the book as 'The Combine'. These themes were in the film but not advanced as much as the book.. The Chief was the true hero for me whereas the film was more a jack Nicholson Oscar win vehicle. Still great film but for me the book is a masterpiece of our time.

That's because she did such an amazing job in her role. She said that she had people come up and spit on her after this movie was released. They really thought she was Nurse Ratched. That's wen you know you've completely nailed that character.
It's from a Catholic order or nuns whose service was to care for the sick. However, the roots of the nursing camp came from Florence Nightingale herself - Queen of the Nurses.
