  • How to change the MINI water pump. All other videos show removing headlamp, cross beams, engine mounts, pipe etc, BUT it can be changed by only removing the wheel and wheel arch.
    See the video for how to do it.
    Also see my other video on my channel for changing the thermostat housing as well. Oh and another for doing a simple oil and filter service.

    Worked well. It's a nuckle banger getting in there and the top water pump bolt is difficult. I was able to get 3 of the bolts out with a 10MM 1/4 socket with various extensions. The hardest part of this is jamming the screwdriver in to stop the pulley from spinning as you loosen or tighten the bolts. I had a harder time with the tighten part coming at it from the top of the idler. Start to finish it took me a little under 3 hours- including coolant refil and test drive. I changed-out the thermostate housing on the other side- that was about 2 hours total. Considering the dealer wanted $1200 and I spent a total $270 for BMW Mini Parts (I replaced a few other things while I was in there)- your video saved me a lot of pain and suffering. I found it easier to sit with the disc brake basically in my lap and do it all blind except for scraping the gasket surface.
    Thank you!

    Thanks for this video helped me save on doing this myself and as you said some of the bolts did take a bit of time this is the same as the r60

    The end I found it easier to partially drop the engine with a Jack.
    All bolts are easily accessible

    excellent video and I commend the academic effort, but in my case, I got the water pump fully disconnected but just couldn't get it free of the tight spot at 4:43 - after much effort, surrendered and removed motor mounts etc. GOOD JOB - thanks for sharing. Some cars might just be tighter than others.

    Ok today i did the same job. İ was unable to remove (even reach) top bolt of water pump. Removed front panel and engine mount. Much easier.

    Does the crossover pipe break once you remove the water pump ?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  5 років тому +1

      The act of removing the water pump shouldn’t break the crossover pipe as it doesn't directly connect to the part of the pump that you are replacing.
      As to why I found mine broken, maybe a botched earlier change of pipe, or it became brittle and fractured. It was previously poorly repaired as it had silicon all over the back to try and fix it leaking!

      Hi had mine done this way in vid. Two years later done head rebuild and found cross over pipe broken after O ring on very end of pipe.. I'm guessing it broke becuasue hard to get pump square when fitting due to lack of room. It never leaked until under pressure and a 1000s miles later.

    you can remove the single bolt on the friction wheel center to remove the wheel you don't have to remove the 3 mount bolts. that makes it easier

    Can you give us an idea how long this replacement method took? I like the idea of taking less of my Cooper apart - great video - thanks!

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  6 років тому +2

      I didn’t time it and didn’t rush too much as I was also videoing and working out how it was going to be possible to do this, plus I also changed the thermostat and back pipe (see other video), however if you are doing this yourself and only doing the water pump then allocating a day for this should be ok.

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  8 місяців тому

      @@lawtonify This is probably the sort of job for more experienced DIYers. Ones that know what a crank is. There are different ways and preferences for doing this job, so some take the bumper off for more access, some like me prefer to just struggle in the available space without bumper removal. YT offers a lot more tips and options than just a workshop manual that uses the long winded way.

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  8 місяців тому

      @@lawtonify Sounds like the owner needs to get someone used to minis and has done this job before. You could look up the mini history on wikipedia and get the engine name for that year, then search on YT for water pump change xxx. I just did a google search “2004 mini cooper s water pump replacement” and a few get listed, hope one helps.
