there are literally so many franchises that could have been represented in MVC2 that don't get a chance to shine, but at the same time, there's unbelievably deep cuts like Sonson and Hayato from Star Gladiator/Plasma Sword. If I had to guess, the most likely reason to shy away from any of the CPS3 characters is because although Naomi is some pretty strong hardware, it already had to heavily compromise the fidelity of animations on most of the returning CotA and MSH characters. This would be EXTREMELY apparent if they did this to any of the Red Earth or SF3 characters without severe resprites, and they clearly weren't ready for those until Yun showed up in CVS2. honestly, though, if I wanted any character from SF3 in Marvel Vs. Capcom, it'd probably be Gill since he already REALLY gives off Adam Warlock vibes and meteor strike would already make for for a pretty good DHC. also having Side-specific assists would be WILD.
Hell Breath of Fire didn’t even get a character and we almost got on in MVC3, some of the Special Partners in MVC1 would’ve been cool like Arthur, or Jubilee for the Marvel side.
Not to mention Jotaro was considered for Marvel 2 supposedly at the request of Araki after he saw an in development build and thought the asset reuse was interesting. The devs really wanted it but the series director was still fearful over Marvel's reaction to Norimaro and forbad it.
Ibuki was such a no-brainer I'll never understand why she's never been in the series. I used to think it was an art style thing and how everyone is from SF Alpha but then I remembered Ryu was sporting his SF3 look in MvC1, so they could've done it if they wanted to
I’m imagining the dynamics between SF3 and the Marvel Characters, Ibuki meeting Psylocke would’ve been cool since they’re both Ninjas, Tweleve and Venom morphing their limbs into weapons, Oro showing Magneto how strong he is and the fact that he can fight with objects too and with only One Hand too!

Aegis wouldn't be as strong in MvC2 simply because the 3S unlockables wouldn't exist. MvC2 requires that you only block away from the point character and not towards every projectile. In addition, MvC2's suite of hidden defensive mechanics (push block guard cancel, push block unblockable protection, etc.) would actually be better suited to dealing with Aegis pressure the same way they nearly invalidated most chip/trap teams outside of Clockw0rk or Duc when players figured the mechanics out.
Adjusting the 3S characters around MvC, or redrawing them, might have been beyond the scope of the MvC2 project. I remember reading that by 2001, almost all of Capcom's 1990s sprite artists either left the company or moved to another division. That's why CvS2's Japanese packaging card says "2d will never die," because, Capcom's 2d sprite division was all but dead at that point
I’m glad I’m not the only one that found this weird, here’s a fun fact, in MVC1 in one of Ryu’s start of a battle entrances you can clearly see Sean along with Ken, I’m not kidding they actually made a CPS-2 Sprite for Sean for a freaking character intro but didn’t bother to repurpose and give it animations for MVC2, as much as we have enough shotos I’d still like to see Sean, but your choices are still great, my other 2 choices would be Ibuki and Oro as well but I’d also like to squeeze Alex in there too he was marketed as the protagonist of Street Fighter 3, if we ever do get an MVC4 I expect Luke to be in there with how hard Capcom is pushing him too.
It’s pretty much just an art style and technological issue. SF3 chars don’t match the more colorful look of marvel. There are waaaaay more frames of animation in sf3. Yun and stands out a lot in CvS2, just like the new Bison and Chun sprites. Advantage is that at least they have similar proportions to the SNK cast to help balance out this dichotomy. I do think Charlie should have been cut in favor of either Guy, Rose or Cody. Rose especially would have been a natural fit for Marvel 2 with soul illusion. Also the only marvel 2 character with a reflect could be interesting. She’d be a fly character or at least 8 way dash and have a teleport
> Remove Sakura Yeeeeeeah, no. As a Sakura main in MVC2, she doesn't play entirely the same with the other shotos unless you transform into Dark Sakura. But I do agree to some extent that MVC2 needed a bit more diversity since they already jacked up the number of playable characters. The ones you mentioned sound viable enough, but I do wanna see Dudley in a Capcom vs fighting game.
You wanna know what’s funny? Remember Street Fighter X Megaman? Even that game had 3rd Strike representation with Urien and even Alpha with Rose, Final Fight with Rolento, and SF4 with C. Viper, if they were to ever make a sequel I wonder what characters from SF5 and SF6 they would put in a hypothetical SFxMM2, I know for sure we’d get Luke specifically the SF6 version. That sounds like a good video idea too I’d love to see it.
I don't get the fascination with Yun being the 3S rep for CvS2 and A3MAX, or why he got ordained to be the intentionally broken character in 4AE, while Alex had to wait until TvC and Gill is on Marvel 3's cutting room floor. You just know Marvel 2 Geneijin would get some insane property since chains already exist universally.
what if dudley had his thunderbolt attack and instead of taking a long startup he disappears for a split second then comes back crashing down the next split second with a pillar of lightning? Great anti air and best way to close the distance on projectiles
maybe I missed it, but something else to consider when asking "why not?" is that the SF3 sprites stand out really hard from the vs series and alpha sprites. not just in apearance but in animation as the sf3 spritesheets are massive with thousands of frames that results in the game's god tier animation fluidity. Sure, they could've reduce or half the frames but then you get the capcom fighting jam appearance. Yes I know this argument falls apart if they decided to redraw the characters, especially since MVC2 adds a handful of newly spirited characters but the majority of MVC2 development was still reusing assets from past games.
And yet we still got characters like Ruby Heart, Sonson, Amingo and even Marrow on the Marvel all of which didn’t have previous games to pull from, I wonder why they didn’t pull from the MVC1 Special Partners since some of those already had sprites they just needed animations but yeah I understand MVC2 was rushed port job.
No, video is flawed because MVC2 uses every regular cast member from previous games. Roll and Sakura were both in previous entries. The only viable character to remove on the Capcom side are the Servbots, since they're already paired with Tron.
3rd Strike would not blend in with the rest of the entire roster's art direction. It would be a stark contrast between all the CPS2 produced sprites against near 1000+ frames of animated CPS3 character sprites of street fighter 3. Yun's appearance in CvS2 is proof of this, as he (alongside Chun) were essentially redrawn for that game. It would be a waste resource and time to do when Capcom has a near infinite pool of CPS2 produced characters to choose.
Lets go servbot mentioned! If i could add anyone id like to add Yang. While he is a very grounded fighter, assists would allow him to keep the air covered while he mixed you on the ground. Dive kicks, command grabs that lead to combos, Gen ai jin combos, and he wouldnt have Yun to overshadow him.
I think it’d be perfectly fine if Aegis was a lv1 super. You’ve gotta remember that one of the things that makes it so strong in 3S is the fact that it enables unblockables, but specifically the kind of unblockables that MVC2’s mechanics don’t allow for (otherwise everyone would be running sandwich oki with Tron assist), which means its strengths rest in combo extension and lockdown, in which case I think it’s probably weaker than something like Strider’s Ouroboros or Spiral’s Dancing Sword. EDIT: Okay I did forget the "reflector" part of Aegis reflector for a second, and that does change things slightly. For the most part I don't think it'd have too much of an impact, since I wouldn't imagine it could reflect beams, but it could potentially be insane counterplay against the exact examples I gave before. I still think it'd be okay as a lv1 in the context of the whole of Urien's kit, but it was worth mentioning. Also fwiw I think SF3 characters didn’t make it in for the same reason that Ryu, Ken et al didn’t get upgraded to their 3S sprites: what I imagine is a combo of wanting to avoid artistic mismatch (the CPS2 games were all adjacent to the Alpha artstyle) and the 3S characters probably having too many frames of animation to be practical for the game (note that this is why Thanos doesn’t have the infinity gems in his MVC2 sprite)
Seeing how much animation had to be stripped out of characters to get everything fitting into MvC2 (conpare Sentinels's idle animations in this game to what he had in CotA) I can only dread how much of the SF3 cast's frames would be ripped from them
