bonus tip i found after using this device for a while: since we're using ableton's sampler for each individual layer, you can actually use up to 127 different samples inside of one sampler, essentially making it work in a round-robin fashion. if you select each individual sample and distribute them equally by velocity inside the zones panel, and then add a velocity device in the layer before the sampler, and set the "out low, out hi, and random" parameters to 64, each note will trigger a random velocity, which in turn should trigger a different sample. it gives you some more freedom to not stick to just one sample per layer :) thanks for the tips as always, and much love
Dude. I've been doing sound design for almost five years and this technique has just directly resulted in some of, if not _the_ coolest stuff I've ever made. After a long period of feeling creatively inadequate, this is genuinely an "a-ha" moment. From the bottom of my heart, thank you guys for doing what you do. For me, these videos are the definition of inspirational.
Wow. Super cool rack with a plethora of uses. I ended up loading guitar samples into each slot and tuning them into a chord in sampler, lowered the pitch randomness to 0, then resampled them and added additional processing and chopped them into a progression. Super super crazy rack, and I really love this channel. Please keep them coming!!!
Even though I don't use Ableton I still like the concepts presented in your videos and seeing how it can be applied to other daws!😁I'm gonna see if I can do something like this in Alchemy.
This video series has made me really consider getting ableton, but I'm applying a lot of the concepts to Reason right now and it's still very educational!
I cannot tell you how much this video has benefitted me as a producer. I am not very knowledgeable on the ins and outs of Ableton, and I had never created my own instrument or used the mapping function before following this video. All of this while being entertaining! I can't thank you enough!
jeez, your editing and aesthetics had me ready to sub within the first couple minutes of this video lol. i don’t even use ableton but im gonna soak up as much knowledge as i can !
Regardless of who the person/people are behind this channel, I am enormously thankful for it's existance. I have learned so much and as some others have said: That ending... I would love to have that track to listen to every morning. Hauntingly eclectic and beautiful in it's anarchic might! Thank you, whoever you are. And thank you even more if the outro piece becomes available.
My favourite tips&tricks channel on this platform. I like really a lot the fact that it's not only a "to sound like this do that" but you have a sort of ethical philosophy around that is similar to mine. It looks like you like a lot producing, making sounds and try to spread some creativity to others because you want to see people doing cool material to listen about. Keep being yourself dude, even if you reach good numbers with this videos keep the line please! 👁👄👁
Very nice! Instead of using the chord device, you could use the note routing tab in the drum rack to make all the pads respond to the same input note. I use the note routing tab alot to route pads for old drum machines.
very nice! i got excited to make my own impactor rack :D and the demo in the end was HEAVENLY. i use ableton as my main DAW, and your argument that its modularity sets it apart from other DAWs is fair, but for example Bitwig's Grid and FL Studio's Patcher are options that are just as modular. Probably someone can do similar things in Reaper, too, if they aren't afraid of coding and menu diving, lol :-D
Sorry if you answered this many times before; Do you mind sharing what effect(s) is/are on the voice-over? who's the star of that vocal chain, which emulates that sick extraterrestrial vibe? im a big fan of the feel of theses videos, it's so out of this world, but cohesively so. Even the types of sounds that come from the the processes you've shown, are blissful and jarring at the same time, just like the overall production . you've made straight up masterpieces with this series. So even if you don't respond..Thank You!
absolutely beautiful and inspiring. Love your presentation style! even though it's a bit rough for me sometimes, I find it very original and refreshing. Big ups!
hell yeah this is coool!.Super dope way to be able to control the amount of randomness. Will try something out 2morrow. I also find it amusing to use the expression control w. velocity, and then randomize velocity inside the midiclip = instant modulation sequences w/o m4L. Anyway thx 4 inspo. digital regards
hey !! awesomevideo !! just wondering, around the time i duplicated my initial layer in the drum rack, the variation almost completely stopped working. i dont know if this is something to do with a bug in expression control? but the sample all of a sudden defaults to -48 st and just alternates between -48 to -47, each other macro only modulating by tiny 0.1% fragments at most. this could be me not correctly following the tut or something else. if someone else has had this issue + found a resolution let me know !
I just came across the same issue at 9:26. Expression Control has a bug. If you leave it expanded, then copy the chain to a new drum pad, it will work. But if you collapse Expression control and copy to a new drum pad, it will unmap everything in the "mapping" area from the very first instrument rack. Annoying... maybe there is an update?
Another Idea might be to ditch the Sampler in favour of Simpler. That leaves you without the reverse option BUT you could use something like Simpler Buddy to randomly automate through the different Warp Modes.
I would give this video a 10/10 if it wasn't for the white screens. Since I have a big monitor and mostly use my computer in the dark, it hurts. So 9/10.
Hey there everyone ! I'm stuck at the instrument rack construction. I cannot affect any macro to my delay effect, it doesn't appear in green when I try to map it. Can someone help me ? Thanks !
I love this kind of tricks that allowed you to creat a infinite soundbank ! But i don't know if it's possible to recreate that kind of rack with reaper or any vst on the market (especially the expression control of ableton who can randomise everything)?
Is there any technical reason why you didnt use several channels of an instrument rack to make the diffent layers? this would allow for an unlimited number of layers
.I am following the tutorial but idk what sample to use. -_- does anyone know what sample are they using? I tried a clap, and a hi hat but the results are not the same
Great video! love the samples you chose for the demonstration. I'd like to know a little bit more about the process of selecting/recording your own samples. Did you recorded them by yourself or you hand-select them online, what's your approach? Thx in advance!
Them: Hey guys, made this sweet rack, grab it and learn nothing! Don't forget to like, share and subscribe!!! 😑 ASD: Drink of my knowledge, learn, grow, expand, and explore, my children! 😍
I love the tutorials. I cannot figure this out with the new expression control device, nor can I access the legacy version. The min and max values seem to be removed from the device? Or is it called something else?
I've got the same problem. In Ableton 12 there is a midi fx Expression Rack but it looks different and there is no RANDOM option. How to avoid this obstacle? Any other midi effects recommended? I've tried a few available in Ableton such as randomiser but it doesn't give good effects.
Atcually I've found a device that is doing similar work, it's just two types of Expression Control and the one looking like in the tutorial won't work; the other one has the XY and the needed RANDOM funktion. Anyway I'm struggling now with different obstacle, for some reasons after I added the samples some of them after a time don't want to work any more, like they don't receive the midi signal for trigger... eh
It will be cool if you put a video tutorial on how to eq and compress on this kind of music type. i feel like i cant never put a melody or so lol I want everything to sound loud
hey @asd_asd_asd_asd - can u think of a way to play the same variation more often - like when i found something nice and want to refine it without resampling everything into audio directly. turning down randomization seems not to work as it resets all the values edit: found a way! map the on/off from the expression controls to macro 9 then you have a stop random control

Gorgeous pads on this vid, would love a tutorial on creating those.
🤔
YES @@asd_asd_asd_asd 16:40 This reminds me Lorn and Chris Clark, such an experience!
yes please!
this would be so great@@asd_asd_asd_asd
@@asd_asd_asd_asd LMAO
the level of production and advanced knowledge is next level, thank you!
instant subscription, this is hands down the best sound design tutorial ive ever seen!
will be paying for the patreon real soon!
seeing an asd upload is like a birthday present
the ending is sooo beautiful
I'm not getting tired to say, this is the best channel on youtube

Good lord, this aesthetic. The video was a work of art in itself.
what a great narrator it makes me feel ACID LIKE
That track at the end is an absolute banger omg
What an incredible tutorial. Very thorough. Also thoughtful about the mindset when it comes to sound design. Thank you. 🙏

Check out Fitnesss if you want to listen to their music. It's beautiful, chaotic, intricate stuff.

That tune at the end........Geeez.
Awesome visual work too. Really inspiring . Thanks again.
ending to this video is insane
This channel is so criminally undersubbed lol. Another banger
That final bop was bangin
Arcа definitely uses this in their tracks
ableton sound design returns with pure art !!
another masterpiece 😦😦😦
I appreciate this cause i dont really dive that much into nested racks and devices in ableton and this lets me explore it a little more now
Top tier video, excited to try everything out

AMO ESTE CANAL!!! Y ni siquiera uso ableton
this FED ME😭💙💙 ily and your videos ☮️
NEW ASD LETS GOOO
ooooo you're back
absolutely beautiful and inspiring.
Love your presentation style! even though it's a bit rough for me sometimes, I find it very original and refreshing.
Big ups!
So good. This made me want a creative reverb/delay trick video to combine with it though..
Why was I not subbed to this? Absolute gold
Best channel on youtube

A tutorial on how to make the pad at 11:27 would be great !
yess pls I was wondering the same

these videos are too goood toooo bee truuueee
I need those visuals in my life, I really fuckin do.
ive tried duplicating chains in the instrument rack and changing the samples and i think it does the same effect!
Thanks for providing so much inspiration about controlled randomness sound design.
(I think you are a Flume smurf)
hehe
Thank you from the Earth
Insane quality again!
masterpiece
Is the song at the end released anywhere? Sounds amazing ❤️

thanks for sharing this! Still I feel like I wouldn't be able to build the samples you use... is there any video where you explain how to make them?
I think it might be matter of choosing good quality samples, checking how will they execute in the process
Thank you - I Freakin Love Your Videos 👊.
i bet this guy would enjoy the digitakt
Is there any technical reason why you didnt use several channels of an instrument rack to make the diffent layers? this would allow for an unlimited number of layers
do you mean like separate chains for each layer within the instrument rack? that's a really good point actually
gonna investigate this brb
What do you mean by this? I'm a newbie at Ableton
was gonna say would make it so you don't need the chord + drum rack right?
.I am following the tutorial but idk what sample to use. -_- does anyone know what sample are they using? I tried a clap, and a hi hat but the results are not the same
I have this problem too, as soon as I do the first map the sample just becomes an extremely short note. Tried different samples but nothing is working
I figured it out, you have to make sure the decay is 60 seconds not 60 milliseconds 2:28
Thank you for this video
Great video! love the samples you chose for the demonstration. I'd like to know a little bit more about the process of selecting/recording your own samples. Did you recorded them by yourself or you hand-select them online, what's your approach? Thx in advance!
it’s a bit of both ! tbh i scrounge sounds-resource.com for game SFX every other week or so
in this video the samples are mostly video game SFX that i’ve processed and resampled in ableton
Them: Hey guys, made this sweet rack, grab it and learn nothing! Don't forget to like, share and subscribe!!! 😑

Anyone know how to make the vocal like this?
It will be cool if you put a video tutorial on how to eq and compress on this kind of music type. i feel like i cant never put a melody or so lol
I want everything to sound loud
how do i get voice effect like the video?
i couldn't find audio effect rack by vocoder driven audio effect rack in patreon ㅠ where can i find it? ( iam membership tho)
Thank you for what you do!
That outro though
Ah finally some angelic fucking NOISE
Got any plans to make non-ableton tutorials? These are absolutely amazing, but I don’t have ableton unfortunately..
can I do this in Live 11?
tysm for inspiration
Amazing 😻
Love it
INCREIBLE, GRACIAS
Woooow! Wondering if the finished impactor rack device would work on Push3 in standalone? That would be Insane! Anybody tried it yet ?
my eyes crying
damn :O
its like jojo sfx
damn ur vids are good.
are you eprom?
uhhhhhh lesgoooooooooooo
13:47
YOOOOO!!!
ableton sound design = asd, this is obvious once you get this into your head - sorry I am dense AF ;]
Yeet
Serial Experiments
ear bleed warning wtf
It’s blessing your ears be grateful
senseless noise under vocoder and ott all these actions weren't worth it
sound snippets for garbage. useless.
hey @asd_asd_asd_asd - can u think of a way to play the same variation more often - like when i found something nice and want to refine it without resampling everything into audio directly. turning down randomization seems not to work as it resets all the values
edit: found a way! map the on/off from the expression controls to macro 9 then you have a stop random control
hi everyone and @asd_asd_asd_asd
i'm so in love with this tool, it's so inspiring
you can use ableton' spectral resonator or a vst like reTune/Chroma/Pitchmap
are you with glitch.cool by any chance?
New ASD day is always a good day ❤️🩹
