Mr. & Mrs. H. My Mother said the BEST most FLAVORFUL Chicken Soup comes when the chicken you use is the Dark Meat...mainly Thigh and Drumstick meat. Remove the Skin from the pieces to cut back on the fat, but use the rest and simmer until the meat falls off the bone. Remove the Chicken meat from the pot and cut into Bite-Sized pieces, and return to the pot and simmer until all the Veggies and Noodles are done.....Enjoy!😊 BTW...To help speed up your recovery...double up on your VITAMIN C and ZINC! Known fighters of Viruses.....which is what "Colds" are! Cheers!
I was going to say thighs, bone in skin trimmed, but still a bit attached are definitely better. And may I suggest small fresh mushrooms, sliced. They are a wonderful addition.
Well done Mrs. H, you did a fine job! As for Mr. H. keep yourself hydrated with plenty of fluids and do rest as much as possible. As for my other favorite soup, I do love me a delicious French onion soup or a Spanish/Mexican style beef soup with chucks of vegetables in it called 'Cocido" (Co-ci-do, pronounced as Ko- see- doh),I use both Spanish/Mexican because I am aware the origin is from Spain but some of the Mexican restaurants here have it on their menus here in SoCal. The ones we see in some Mexican restaurants here use bone in beef shanks which makes the soup/broth very flavorful, and it can be very tender when cooked right. Any garden vegetable, cut corn cobs cut in thirds, carrots, wedges of cabbage, onion, garlic, bay leaf, squash, zucchini, and yes celery. Oh, I forgot a garnish of cilantro or parsley if you don't have cilantro. I am just going by memory of what I have ordered at restaurants, I never made it, but it does taste very good. We have seen variations of Cocido at some restaurants, some add slices of fresh avocado to garnish which I found odd at first, but I liked it. I do hope you all feel better soon. Take care of yourselves. Peace. ☮
Another tip:If you aren't likely to eat the whole batch of soup tonight cook your noodles separately. Just enough for what you're eating. Put a serving of egg noodles in each bowl and ladle the soup on top. Otherwise the noodles in the leftovers turn to unappetizing mush.
As a Mexican American, when the weather starts to get cold and you want that warm soup, our go to is pozole! There are 2 different kinds, the regular red one but also a green one. So much flavor in them, it’s just the best!

Hot tea with a spoonful of honey and a small spoonful of whiskey. Bundle up and it will make you sweat out the cold. The heat of the tea will intensify the alcohol. So very little is needed.
@@NotKev2017 I was going to comment that my go to is a Hot Toddy which is what you described if you add a little lemon juice as well. The honey, lemon and whiskey help with soothing the throat, vitamin c and boost the immune up….at least I like to think the whisky (or bourbon, brandy or rum) is fighting them germs which makes me feel less guilty with drinking in the morning. 😂
Local honey tablespoon,a pinch turmeric, dandelion tea warm in a cup mixed together, drink two cups 12 hours apart for three days, awesome for common colds

We eat celery with peanut butter and its great if you like peanut butter. You spread the peanut butter in the whole crevice of the celery stalk and a good snack! Ate this all the time as a kid
I love soup season. A nice big bowl of hot soup and fresh buttered bread is paradise on a nice winter's day. Tomato soup with grilled cheese will always be king.
There was a study that I think came out of Canada, that discovered there's an enzyme in chicken broth that really is good for you and is healing when you're sick. Isn't that neat?!!!
The beauty about soup is you really don’t need a recipe as long as you have a flavorful broth you can add what ever you want. I actually made chicken noodle soup yesterday for a sick family member. Great job Mrs H and hope you get to feeling better Mr H!
The Americas Test Kitchen cookbook is a great resource and cookbook! Great choice! One thing to note with chicken noodle soup.. is if you want left over chicken noodle soup for the next day, cook the noodles SEPARATELY because if you leave the noodles in the container or jar for the next day, the noodles will absorb most of the liquid or soup! But if you are planning to eat all of it in one sitting then go ahead and cook the noodles in the soup itself. But I think the thin noodles that Mrs H put in will be okay and not absorb as much of the liquid the next day such as if you used wide egg noodles. Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup uses the thin noodles like Mrs H used in her soup! When sick.. it is common to use crackers with soup rather than bread but both crackers or bread is good.
You definitely need to cook a whole chicken & use that broth. Shred the chicken, add the veggies & spices. Dont break up the egg noodles. It’ll be amazing! Feel better H’s!!🥰🥰
Good tip about the noodles. If you're going to freeze it for later, it's better to use something like barley or rice for the starch. I still mourn the wonderful homemade bone broth I sullied by adding a lot of egg noodles and then freezing the leftovers. Lesson learned, but such a waste.
In the winter, I love hearty soups like clam chowder, corn chowder, or tomato bisque. After Thanksgiving, we sometimes make turkey soup with the leftover turkey. We tend to eat crackers or bread with soup.
My grandmother worked out in the public for most of her life. She juiced 1/2 lemon in hot water and adding raw local honey making it quite sweet. She took that each morning and NEVER had a cold. She lived to 105 years old!!!
If I'm sick, my go-to is chicken noodle soup . However, if I'm healthy I seldom ever eat chicken noodle soup. It just doesn't taste good to me when I'm healthy. If I'm feeling good there's so many other things I want chicken corn chowder, French onion, ham and bean, lentil, clam chowder, and potato just to name a few. Though I have made most of the others by scratch I have never made split pea soup from scratch which was surprising because it is probably one of my favorites.
Your soup looks amazing! There's nothing like soup made with love when you don't feel good. My favorite soup is probably chicken tortilla soup or taco soup.
The wow factor you're looking for is to make homemade noodles to add to your soup. It's like night and day difference and as long as you have a rolling pin, simple to make
Since I was a child my mothers chicken soup always made me feel better when I had a bad cold. When my stomach was out of sorts she made me cheese toast.
Looks great!! We add a lot more carrots, garlic and paprika. And everyone likes it a little different. Some in my house like it served over rice. We have rolls to dip in it also Hope you all feel better soon!
Chili and chicken noodle are two of my favorites. I usually sauté the onion carrots and celery a bit before adding the broth just until the softened a bit
A bit of advice to make shredding chicken breasts. I put the whole chicken breast in my Kitchen Aid stand mixer and turn it on low. It only takes seconds and it is shredded. My husband loves chicken salad so I cook a lot of chicken. This is my favorite go to for shredding meat.
You did great. Such a classic. You may also want to try this using a rotisserie chicken as a starting point! You can get the benefits of the bone flavor as well as the roasty flavor from the chicken. It adds depth to the flavor profile. Feel better soon Mr H.
Or just honey mixed with some lemon juice. It coats the throat and helps to soothe it. My mom would even mix honey and vinegar. I actually liked it when I was a kid.
@Akamai2HI thyme is very good for respiratory system. Each of these things have their own benefits. Honey can act like an antibiotic. Lemon has vit c. Each of these things also have extra benefits like antiinflammatory, I have used home remedies for a long time even growing many things I use home remedies wise. And always seeing what else I can learn. Yours would help some but the thyme gives it an extra boost thyme is a superfood/herb.
So glad this soup comforts you. I love it for the same reason. Another soup to try is bean & bacon, or bean & ham, with some cornbread as a side. Yum! With love from Indiana, U.S.A. ❤✝️🇺🇸
We have a tradition of making homemade chicken noodle soup a few times a year. It's an all day process from making the noodles homemade and letting them dry for several hours and letting the chicken boil and simmer for several hours. One little secret ingredient I like to add for flavor is small bacon pieces (ô¿ô) such a comfort food
I love it so much I even like liptons. I used to love panera's I'd get it in the sourdough bowl without the croutons but they changed the recipe a while ago, still OK especially with the bread but not as good.
Two tips and a comment - Tip 1- The next time you use your smoker, smoke a couple of whole chickens (lightly seasoned). Pull the meat off, but reserve the bones/cartilage/skin and freeze them separately in ZipLocs or similar for soup making. Use the pulled meat from the chicken to add to your soup, but also add the bones/cartilage in a small muslin bag. Boiling that in the soup will add even more depth and nutrition while still making it easy to remove before serving. Tip 2- Make a light roux at the start of your soup cook. Just a bit of butter(or oil), and half the amount of flour. Toast the flour in the fat before adding the other ingredients. It will make the soup have a lot more depth, and just a bit thicker, which is very satisfying on the palate. Comment - Adding a handful of frozen sweet corn kernels or a handful of frozen green peas is often a welcome addition to Chicken Noddle Soup, and both add a touch of brightness, especially if you follow the tips above. There's no such thing as having 'too wholesome' of a soup when you're under the weather or having a bowl of it during the dreary days of winter. Lean into the flavor and comfort. Cheers. Feel better soon!
my 3 go to soups for when i am sick is chicken noodle lots of black pepper, Mexican stew posole or pozole depending on where you are from, Chinese hot and sour soup. all 3 are like you say a warm hug. and seems to make me better.
1) Soup looks amazing! I can practically smell it through my monitor and now I'm HUNGRY! ^___^ 2) This is just an opinion, but I think one of the reasons that chicken noodle soup works so well when you're sick is that it's both very hearty, but very simple. There's nothing in it that will irritate your stomach or your sinuses. Just gobs of protein and some simple, health some veggies. No frills. No fuss. 3) My personal favorite soup would be a nice gumbo, don't really care what the protein is, within reason.
Chicken noodle soup, chicken and dumplings, cheddar, bacon, potato soup, tomato soup, beef stew, and clam chowder. These are my favorite soup, and soup adjacent, dishes.
What works for me when I get a cold, Black tea (Irish Black Tea, works best) for sinuses with Honey and Lemon. For the sore throat a Lemon Honey tea (just lemon juice and honey in hot water). Chicken Noodle soup for a meal.
When I have a cold, I like to combine one bag of Throat Coat tea with one bag of Gypsy Cold Care tea in a mug of boiling water and steep for 15 min. It doesn't need sweetener and it's delicious and so soothing.
Get well Hs! Miss H, peppers lots of peppers, specially cayenne, germs hate pectin❤ the spicier the better Sendin up extra prayers for our cousins across the pond🎉😊
1) Home-made chicken noodle 2) chili with beans 3) moms hamburger soup. 4) Ham and bean soup 5) beef and barley 6) chicken and dumpling 7) Tomato 8) Cheesy brocoli 9) chicken tortilla 10) My personal beef and vegi with noodles . Also, I tend to include barley as well.
❤Chicken and rice was our other sick day soup here in the US. No bread with the soup.....but you float some goldfish crackers on top(or oysterbcrackers) Your soup looked delicious
I make a recipe called "Ginger Garlic Healing Chicken Soup" which my whole family loves, whether we're feeling under the weather or not. But, if you suffer from congestion, this soup definitely helps! So, use half chicken stock/broth with half vegetable stock/broth, then add minced garlic, zested ginger, sliced mushrooms, sliced green onion tops, red pepper flakes, and trimmed baby spinach (in liue of celery and noodles).
You can simmer the chicken in stock or water on the stove too with seasonings and it makes stock too. Simmer the chicken until done. I take it out set aside so it doesn't overcook. Boneless skinless thighs are great, too. Set aside while you fix the rest of your soup. We just had norovirus in our family so I made this. If appears too salty you can add some water to pot.
vegetable beef with barley is a favorite at our house. lots of veggies - cabbage rutabagas potatoes green beans peas carrots corn celery onion garlic etc but i love to cook beef shanks in my pressure cooker to give me that great broth, plus i toss in leftover roast beef if i have it too. i love to throw in some thyme, dill, bay leaf, and a pinch of curry powder (amazing how that adds but don't overdo it cuz it takes over) so it's beefy and choke full of a great variety of vegetables of whatever i happen to have on hand. it is a staple at this house. we crave it! my chicken and rice soup is a family favorite too. the dark meat and back bones especially add to the stock etc ( and a little pinch of allspice in the broth does something wonderful).............. enjoy your comfort and feel better soon!
My mom has 4 different chicken noodle soup recipes she does and rotates through. My two favorite ones are the one with rutabaga and the other one with cauliflower. It has all the different things you put in plus extra stuff like barley, ect. and they are still different from each other.
Add a tbsp or so of lemon juice to all your chicken-based soups. Makes the flavor POP! Also, use fresh parsley and cook it with the rest of the broth from the beginning.

I love homemade chicken noodle soup…I don’t eat it out of a can. I hope Mr H gets to feeling better very soon.
My grandmother worked out in the public for most of her life. She juiced 1/2 lemon in hot water and adding raw local honey making it quite sweet. She took that each morning and NEVER had a cold. She lived to 105 years old!!!
When someone in my family got sick, my mom would make chicken soup, and she made sure that we all ate the chicken soup
Split pea soup with ham on a cold day is my favorite.
Nothing like a good bowl of chicken noodle soup on a winter day. I add a little bit of hot sauce, really opens up the flavors
Chicken tortilla soup is good for added heat and flavor.
I was just going to post the same thing - the hot sauce (or cayenne pepper) helps the illness. And definitely use dark meat - much more flavor.
There are so many different ways we make it in America. I love them all!
Hope y’all feel better soon! Nothing better than chicken noodle soup when you’re feeling ill!
I thought chicken noodle soup was a main dish known and made by most western countries, never thought of it as an American dish.
Chicken noodle soup was a staple in our house when we were not feeling well. Also a hot toddy; tea, sugar, lemon and whiskey.
Love watching your videos, guys. Mrs. H has come a long way from her first videos. Congrats to both of you and hope you’re both feeling better.
The wow factor you're looking for is to make homemade noodles to add to your soup. It's like night and day difference and as long as you have a rolling pin, simple to make
Mrs H says "nice" to Mr H with the same inflection she uses with Baby H...😂
They are both my babies
You're a keeper!! 😊@@Mrhandfriends
We have rolls to dip in it also
Hope you all feel better soon!
Chili and chicken noodle are two of my favorites. I usually sauté the onion carrots and celery a bit before adding the broth just until the softened a bit
“I need a wholesome hug inside.” Beautiful 😊
I love: loaded baked potato soup, cheddar and broccoli soup, clam chowder, corn chowder, and chili.
Definitely doing that next time
If you don't have a kitchen aid, a hand mixer works also.
You did great. Such a classic. You may also want to try this using a rotisserie chicken as a starting point! You can get the benefits of the bone flavor as well as the roasty flavor from the chicken. It adds depth to the flavor profile. Feel better soon Mr H.
Thyme lemon and honey tea could help you feel better also Vicks on feet covered with socks.
Nothing is better than chicken noodle soup for a sick day
So glad this soup comforts you. I love it for the same reason. Another soup to try is bean & bacon, or bean & ham, with some cornbread as a side. Yum! With love from Indiana, U.S.A. ❤✝️🇺🇸
Get well soon you 3. And have a good next week.
Sorry you are feeling under the weather. I really like the curative power of onions. I like onion soup.
Im from Louisiana and my favorite soup is Sauce Piquant. But when I'm sick i love eggdrop soup....mmm mmm c'est bon!
French onion soup would have to be my favorite but I do love most soups I've tried.
I love it so much I even like liptons. I used to love panera's I'd get it in the sourdough bowl without the croutons but they changed the recipe a while ago, still OK especially with the bread but not as good.
Get well soon mr H! And Mrs H what an amazing chef you are!❤
Blessings and best wishes for good health!
This looks just like the one my late mother used to make. She was a great cook. Great job!👏🏻 🎉 feel better!❤️🩹
Two tips and a comment -
Tip 1- The next time you use your smoker, smoke a couple of whole chickens (lightly seasoned).
Sounds lovely. Great idea on cooking some chicken and storing it for future use. We will try that.
my 3 go to soups for when i am sick is chicken noodle lots of black pepper, Mexican stew posole or pozole depending on where you are from, Chinese hot and sour soup. all 3 are like you say a warm hug. and seems to make me better.
It also helps to throw the leftovers in the fridge overnight to let the flavors blend. Reheat the next day. Celery works. Slice it up thin.
I make it almost exactly like that with added garlic and some lentils, great for winter!
Mrs. H's soup looks yummy (therapeutic)! Hope you both are feeling better soon. My favorite soup: split pea. Best with a grilled cheeze sammy---
Chicken soup for the soul 😊
I ❤ soups! Butternut, bean and bacon, curry chicken😊
My favorite soup is actually a stew. Good old fashioned Kentucky Burgoo!
Chicken noodle soup, chicken and dumplings, cheddar, bacon, potato soup, tomato soup, beef stew, and clam chowder. These are my favorite soup, and soup adjacent, dishes.
I love chicken enchilada soup. 😋
That sounds so good
@Mrhandfriends
French onion soup 🍲 is great too 😋
What works for me when I get a cold, Black tea (Irish Black Tea, works best) for sinuses with Honey and Lemon. For the sore throat a Lemon Honey tea (just lemon juice and honey in hot water). Chicken Noodle soup for a meal.
In actuality eating chicken noodle soup as I’m watching y’all.
I’m jealous now
When I have a cold, I like to combine one bag of Throat Coat tea with one bag of Gypsy Cold Care tea in a mug of boiling water and steep for 15 min. It doesn't need sweetener and it's delicious and so soothing.
Good for the soul...
Get well Hs! Miss H, peppers lots of peppers, specially cayenne, germs hate pectin❤ the spicier the better
Sendin up extra prayers for our cousins across the pond🎉😊
Couldn't agree more! I will eat nacho jalapeno rings when I have a stuffy nose, and it cleara me right up!
1) Home-made chicken noodle
2) chili with beans
3) moms hamburger soup.
4) Ham and bean soup
5) beef and barley
6) chicken and dumpling
7) Tomato
8) Cheesy brocoli
9) chicken tortilla
10) My personal beef and vegi with noodles . Also, I tend to include barley as well.
Chili is a good comfort, autumn type of soup.
Chicken tortilla soup
Another great video! Hope you're feeling better soon!!
When you’re sick and have a cold, there’s not much better than chicken noodle soup. Other than actual medicine.
I always make a loaf of rustic bread when I make soup. Beef Barley is my favorite soup.
My mom said,
leave the bay leaf in, and who ever gets it has to kiss the cook.
I’m adding in lots next time then
I always keep the bay leaf in, only take it out when the soup is ready. Didn't know about the "kiss the cook" part.
Love making soup; chicken noodle, vegetable beef, potato, broccoli cheddar, split pea with ham are just a few favorites.
Split pea soup
❤Chicken and rice was our other sick day soup here in the US. No bread with the soup.....but you float some goldfish crackers on top(or oysterbcrackers)
Your soup looked delicious
This time of year, I fancy a pumpkin and sweet potato soup served over some stuffing w/ sausage. Sweet, savory, filling, and lovely.
On a cold day a bowl of chicken noodle soup is so good.
Loaded baked potatoes soup, with crusty bread. Chicken noodle soup with make you feel better. Have another bowl tomorrow. Love from Indiana.
How nice that you were able to try this when you’re sick. Feel better soon! 🙏
My favorite soup is tomato soup and dipping American grilled cheese sandwich in it oh man it's delicious
I add a bit of minced garlic and rosemary to my chicken noodle soup. It’s very good for you when you’re sick.
vegetable beef with barley is a favorite at our house. lots of veggies - cabbage rutabagas potatoes green beans peas carrots corn celery onion garlic etc but i love to cook beef shanks in my pressure cooker to give me that great broth, plus i toss in leftover roast beef if i have it too. i love to throw in some thyme, dill, bay leaf, and a pinch of curry powder (amazing how that adds but don't overdo it cuz it takes over) so it's beefy and choke full of a great variety of vegetables of whatever i happen to have on hand. it is a staple at this house. we crave it! my chicken and rice soup is a family favorite too. the dark meat and back bones especially add to the stock etc ( and a little pinch of allspice in the broth does something wonderful).............. enjoy your comfort and feel better soon!
