The crust was then placed on top and baked until golden brown.

That's actually one of the best chicken pot pies I've seen. I really liked the way the crust turned out. Nice and brown and crispy. It's definitely a great comfort food on a rainy, cold day. And it's not an artery-hardening, blood-sugar-spiking dish, either, so you can eat it more often. And I know I keep saying this, but Elanna is so darned cute. She's so well-behaved.
America's Test Kitchen is the very best. They not only test recipes, but test kitchen implements, and explain the scientific reasons why some things work, and some don't.
I make pot pie with leftover turkey during the holidays. I cheat with premade pie crusts, cream of chicken soup, and then the veggies. Or with biscuits on top.
ATK preps can be a bit fussy but they are absolutely spot on. Continue to explore them and you will not be disappointed, even if it take more than one try.
I also want to mention that a different style of pot pie before the American pot pie, originated from Europe, probably England and was brought over to the original colonies.
@@firefighterchickI live in Pennsylvania and eat Chicken pot pie all the time. It's a mix of chicken and vegetables in a cream sauce baked in pastry 😊
@jeffhampton2767 what area? Here in the south east what you are describing and what she made(which looked incredible)is not called chicken pot pie but rather simply chicken pie since it's effectively in a pie crust. Pot pie is made of dough similar to pie dough and cooked in a pot. 😉😊
Beautiful pie there Mrs H! It is called a pot pie because it was usually cooked in a pot over the coals rather than in a pie dish. The crust of a pot pie only covers the top of the dish itself where as a traditional pie has a bottom crust and a top crust (in most scenarios).
I have never in my life heard of a pot pie without a bottom crust. I learned something new today. 🙂 I don't think I'd want a pot pie without a bottom crust, though.
I think you guys broke the dam of American cuisine dishes to Europe, today just first watched Captain Meck make Chicken & Dumplings, then Recky and Carol just had an Apple Cobbler American style, and the Beasley’s had meatloaf, and now this! As an American, while we are fine for being know for our hamburgers and hotdogs dishes, I am grateful you guys helped open everyone’s eyes that we have MORE American dishes, just not the typical ones we get stuck being associated with. Once again not complaining of a dislike of those foods, just been frustrating trying to tell anyone outside North American we have other options too. So I’m giving you guys big credit to actually exploring various American recipes you’re attempting to make from the UK. Thank you!!!
I only recently discovered Captain Meck And was sort of hesitant to watch his videos because I have seen other British people didn’t even try to do an American dish properly. They did an absolutely horrible job but not captain Meck. I have only glanced through some of his videos, but he does seem like his videos are worth watching as it appears he actually takes the time to try to follow the recipes the correct way. That’s one of the many things I like about Mrs. and Mr. H.
@@mildredpierce4506 So far it seems both Mr H and Mrs H along with Captain Meck do a great job with their research. About the same tier of research Lawrence from Lost in the Pond does with American culture. Recky and Carol along with the Beasley’s are starting out, I think they are doing pretty well along side Mr and Mrs H and Captain Meck. The thing is that it is a trial and error for the most part, as I mentioned some of these dishes it seems like most people living outside North America don’t know about them till people posted videos traveling the US and opening their eyes we have more than carnival food. Another shout out the the New Zealand family, they too got into a little bit of American dishes, but now that they are actually traveling to the States it’s a clearer perspective of the dishes we can have. Just appreciate that FINALLY a lot of beloved dishes that originated here are getting some recognition.
I am amazed by the number of Midwest dishes that I assumed came from England that didn't. Chicken Pot Pie just tastes like something the British would eat.
It is an old recipe dating back to 4000 BCE (By speculation and ancient recipes). In the 1600s the English settlers brought the recipe to the Americas.
Good job Mrs. H! I love chicken pot pie. I was never energetic enough to make one from scratch for my family(I did all the cooking, because my wife didn't like cooking). As a widower, I now enjoy Marie Callender's chicken pot pies from the freezer section of my grocery stores. 👍👩🏻🍳❤

WELL DONE!!! My mouth was watering when you took that out of the oven!! A home made chicken pot pie is to die for! I am telling you when my grandmother made these you could smell them from houses away!!!
For mixing bowls, you can't go wrong with a good set of Pyrex glass bowls in various sizes. The stainless steel ones are great as well - my Mom had those. Except they can be hard to handle (mom's had a tiny ring thing as a handle). In the last few years I bought a large melamac bowl (I think that's the product) shaped like a huge cup, with a pouring lip, a large handle to hang onto, and nonskid material on the bottom. Dishwasher & microwave safe - and I LOVE it. PS - on the glass bowls I also use the mixing bowls that came with our mixer. They work well. Whichever, enjoy what you get! You'll make good use of them.
You did a fantastic job making the pastry and after baking, it was perfect. Your patience in cooking is only surpassed by your patience with your daughter! You are creating memories for her that will last a lifetime. I so enjoy watching you and your family. God bless......Gary
Congratulations on your first attempt at making a chicken pot pie! Homemade pot pies are the best and you successfully made a delicious chicken pot pie! I am so proud of you Mrs. H. well done! I enjoyed watching you make it from beginning to end and what a positive end! I enjoyed this video! Peace. ☮
The filling of a pot pie is great, but the pastry with it's crispy edges tastes the best. When you take your pastry pieces with the crispy outside edges with your fork and coat them in the remaining "gravy" of the pot pie the texture and flavor as you eat them is heavenly. Elana knows what is up with pot pie because she devours the pastry in the gravy like I do.

Never have I ever made it, but I've ordered plenty! It will always be a favorite, and yours looked so much better than any I have eaten, I promise you that!
I have made it with puff pastry, but I prefer regular baking powder buttermilk biscuit dough. Usually the top is 1/2 inch thick. Think biscuits and gravy. Be careful no to over work the dough. Once you add the liquid, it is easy to build up the gluten by mixing too much, making for less flaky and tougher crust. also I cook the chicken to 155 degrees, since you are going to cook it more. 165 tends to dry out the chicken breast
Great job! I have to thank you for using a bottom crust. So many people don't do that. I know people have the right to do as they please, but to me, a pie must have a bottom crust! And this is a good reminder, we are suppose to get a cold front move through tonight. So, I think I'll make one of these tomorrow. Haven't made one in a long time. Take care ya'll.
@Mrhandfriends You cannot go wrong with the Cook’s Country recipes. Those folks spend up to a year perfecting recipes before they publish them, including using volunteer testers to refine the recipes. You can sign up to be a tester for free at their website (they only ask that you not publish them first). It’s fun being part of the process.
For mixing bowls, I got a set of five stainless steel bowls (going from about 1-2 cups to a huge one that holds over 12 cups of ingredients) at about 20. They are still the best thing I've ever purchased 44 years later. Take from that what you will.
When I got my first look at that finished pie, I was drooling, so impressed! You did extremely well on a lot of cooking! Don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but I'm of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and a staple food for us is chicken pot pie - and while the ingredients are very much the same, the end result is quite different. We cook our chicken and break it down, keeping that yummy pan drippings as the basis for our stock, then we toss in the carcass and boil the heck out of it, along with celery and onion and parsley, preferably fresh. When the carcass is falling apart, we pull it off the stove and strain the broth into another pan, and then rescue any chicken meat that was cooked of the bone. Then we add in celery, onion, carrots and salt and pepper and put it on for a proper long cook. Meanwhile, we start on a pot pie noodles. We use a couple of cups of flour and an egg for each cup of flour, with a bit of salt. We knead all of that together until it's fairly smooth, then roll it out into about 3/16 of an inch thick. You don't need it to be a full quarter, but an eighth is too skinny. Then using a sharp knife, you cut the dough into square, rough 2x2 inches. Then you add your chicken back to the broth and when it all comes up to heat - and it should be very "brothy", you start adding the noodles, a few at a time so they don't stick together, stirring often. Once all the noodles are in, you let it simmer until the smell is driving you wild, about `15 minutes or so. Serve it with bread and butter and strawberry preserves/jam and you are in Amish kid heaven. Once you have the method, you can do it with any meat. Ham potpie is another favorite, but my mother used all kinds of game, from squirrels to venison. Years ago, at our church, we announced a fellowship meal and told everyone to bring Chicken Pot Pie, whatever that means in your house. it was a fantastic array of pies and soups. Only problem was,our bellies weren't big enough to try them all!
That looks fantastic. I've never made this myself - I just buy the ready-made ones at the supermarket - but you made this look really worth doing. Well done!
That looks spot on!! Delicious🤗 I use a nested set of 4 metal mixing bowls. The largest one is huge!! lol… they work best for me because they are indestructible and you can use any tool you want without hurting them. You can use them as a double boiler or in the frig. And they aren’t expensive and no micro plastic at all. 🤗❤️🐝
One of the most excellent cookbooks ever. Love their cookbooks. Lots of good recipes. Excellent job on your pot pie and where do you get that chicken seasoning?
Go on there, girl! Well done!!!! Looks beautiful. It set up so nicely. Cooks Country and America’s Test Kitchen are great cookbooks to have. They won’t steer you wrong! It’s still sunny and a bit warm here for Autumn, but when it cools, I’m going to make a bit of Chicken Pot Pie as well. Your video has definitely put me into that frame of mind! By the way…whether this is correct or not, I don’t know, but my mom told me the “pot” in Chicken Pot Pie or Turkey Pot Pie was because it’s a savory dish where most of the ingredients are prepared in another “pot” but are thrown in the pie at the end. Made sense to me. Haha.
Chicken pot pie is in my list of top 5 meals. I like to eat all the inside first leaving the crust to last but sometimes I eat all the crust first because I can't control myself.
Chicken Pot Pie is a favorite from my childhood. I have never been successful in replicating my grandmother's version, and asked my mother why. She reminded me that my grandmother used lard for the crust, and that made it flakier. Congratulations on a beautiful pie.
Great video. Mrs.H, that pie is beautiful. I like my pie a little more saucier and I add corn instead of peas. FYI, since you are making a crust from scratch you might as well make another one at the same time. Take the second one form them into two discs, freezer wrap them, store them in the freezer. On a busy day take them out to defrost and make a pie in half the time. I have many mixing bowls but I prefer my 10 inch/25cm stainless steel bowl that I purchased at a Restaurant Supply Warehouse, a whole lot less expensive than a department store. Again, great video and a beautiful pie. Have a wonderful day.
Bravo, I usually have something to add but I'm actually speechless! You needed the rainy day to make it that much more comforting. Exactly the reason we make them. Well, that and funerals but I digress...Sorry I missed this! =)
For an easier dinner, make the filling with a little more water and throw in a bunch of noodles at the end. It saves making the pastry. The filling is also good over rice. Look up Chicken and dumplings for another southern staple.
Looks and tastes like perfection! In answer to your question on hardware, I prefer to use stainless steel bowls. They can be light yet durable and you can get sizes that nestle to save on storage space. I have a few glass or ceramic bowls for when I use acidic ingredients that might react with metal. Avoid plastics since they're prone to leach chemicals.
Y'all have such a beautiful family. Mrs. H, you had such a good helper. I live in Alabama and I LOVE chicken out pie. Yours look delicious. I've never used chicken salt. I'm not sure if I've heard of it.
Oh my goodness! I just had a cold slice of pizza for lunch, and now I'm green with envy - that looks delicious!! ! Mrs H... you done good, sweetheart!!
The Pennsylvania Amish community - also known as Pennsylvania Dutch - has a version of chicken pot pie. Which is made in a crock pot, and is made with dumpling noodles. PA Dutch-style pot pie can be cooked with chicken, pork, beef, or turkey. The common vegetables are carrots, & potatoes. You can add your own vegetables. Tasty on a nice, cool, dreary day!
Wow! I'm impressed that you would go through such a lengthy process as to roasting a chicken just to put it in a pot pie. Growing up, we'd only have a pot pie whenever we had leftover chicken.
@@melissafields3376 Try the supermarket roasted turkey or chicken and you can whip this out in half the time. You can also refrigerate the chicken making it easier to debone. Boil the bones to make a base for gravy or add to the pot pie filling. No waste.

P.S. For a delicious full meal,, Roast or grill bratwursts,, Then leave whole or cut them up & add them to your Cabbage mix BEFORE cooking,, The juices of the bratwurst will also add another level of flavor to your cabbage dish & I can promise you that,, You WON'T have any leftovers. 👀👅❤️

Definitely, and their What's Eating Dan series is a GREAT place to explore the sciences of best practices in the kitchen.
Onions in a chicken pot pie?

That's actually one of the best chicken pot pies I've seen. I really liked the way the crust turned out. Nice and brown and crispy. It's definitely a great comfort food on a rainy, cold day. And it's not an artery-hardening, blood-sugar-spiking dish, either, so you can eat it more often. And I know I keep saying this, but Elanna is so darned cute. She's so well-behaved.
America's Test Kitchen is the very best. They not only test recipes, but test kitchen implements, and explain the scientific reasons why some things work, and some don't.
I've got to say, you've clearly put a lot of work into this pie, and I think you nailed the output. It looks like the PERFECT rainy day comfort food.
That's the best British person making an american food dish I've seen!
As long as you follow the recipe, I believe anything you get from "America's test kitchen" will be successful. 😊
Delicious dish that's an absolute comfort food. America's test kitchen are so important. They test everything to make sure all turns out perfectly.
As an American, I say well done! I would be proud to serve that to my own friends and family.
I make pot pie with leftover turkey during the holidays. I cheat with premade pie crusts, cream of chicken soup, and then the veggies. Or with biscuits on top.
heck even bisquick works for me if I have to. I did put sour cream in with the soup the last time I made it and it was good.
ATK preps can be a bit fussy but they are absolutely spot on. Continue to explore them and you will not be disappointed, even if it take more than one try.
That looks BEAUTIFUL. American Chicken pot pie was invented in Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania dutch. We also eat turkey pot pie and beef pot pie. 😊
I also want to mention that a different style of pot pie before the American pot pie, originated from Europe, probably England and was brought over to the original colonies.
Just only this isn't what Pennsylvania's call chicken POT pie 😅
@@firefighterchickI live in Pennsylvania and eat Chicken pot pie all the time. It's a mix of chicken and vegetables in a cream sauce baked in pastry 😊
@jeffhampton2767 what area?
Here in the south east what you are describing and what she made(which looked incredible)is not called chicken pot pie but rather simply chicken pie since it's effectively in a pie crust.
Pot pie is made of dough similar to pie dough and cooked in a pot.
😉😊
@@firefighterchickThat looks exactly like the chicken pot pie I eat in Pennsylvania. How is it different?
Beautiful pie there Mrs H! It is called a pot pie because it was usually cooked in a pot over the coals rather than in a pie dish. The crust of a pot pie only covers the top of the dish itself where as a traditional pie has a bottom crust and a top crust (in most scenarios).
Ahhhh. thanks Darice
Fully enclosed crust is so much better than just a top crust in my opinion.
I always make a bottom and top crust.
I have never in my life heard of a pot pie without a bottom crust. I learned something new today. 🙂 I don't think I'd want a pot pie without a bottom crust, though.
@@jackgilchrist A LARGE number of casseroles have only a top crust. Also, when making ~lazy berry pie types.
Wetting the edges of the crust will make it seal better. Just a tiny dab of water. Your pie is beautiful Mrs H. Now I’ve gotta make one!😊
You hit a homerun with that Chicken Pot Pie Mrs. H! Looks stupendous! Cook's Country/America's Test Kitchen has the best , fool proof recipes!
Love their recipes! Never had a dud.
As a southerner this is my favorite dish, and as is tradition my grandma makes the best ever.
Roast chicken juices are liquid gold.
Your dishes are great, even the burgers and hotdogs! In our minds no one does food consistently like the Americans
Mrs H is always such a harsh self-critic, so if she’s loving it this much, you know it must be delicious. 😋
Why am I watching this when I'm starving? That looked really good.
I’m so used to “pot pies” I never even questioned the name before. Fascinating the everyday stuff we take for granted and don’t even think about!
I love how much confidence you've gained in your cooking/baking skills. You're rockin' that kitchen!

Another AWESOME job Mrs. H!!! America is so proud of yall!
Fold the top crust under the bottom then pinch together. For all pies with a top crust. Yours looks wonderful!
Love homemade chicken pot pie!! The one in the picture doesn't seem to have enough of the cream sauce but looks extremely delicious!

I need to introduce you all to the Townsend's youtube channel. I think you'll like it.
I've not made them, but I've enjoyed many of them from my grocer, Try Turkey pot pies, too.
Yes I cooked them on cold fall or winter days it brings back memories of cooking them with my mom and grandma
Wow, Mrs H, you did an amazing job! Definitely comfort food here in Iowa, too!!!
Oregon! I am really impressed that you made this from scratch. Nice job!
I am a bit of a sucker for pastry so I’ll add more where I can
Looked fabulous! You're being a great role model for your own and for everyone Mrs. H!
Thank you ❤️

You cannot go wrong with the Cook’s Country recipes. Those folks spend up to a year perfecting recipes before they publish them, including using volunteer testers to refine the recipes. You can sign up to be a tester for free at their website (they only ask that you not publish them first). It’s fun being part of the process.
I saw that golden crust when you pulled it out of the oven, and I knew it was a win. Great video! love me some Chicken pot Pie.
That was a very good looking Chicken pot pie. Excellent work!
Pot Pie also freezes really well.
Wish we had some in the freezer now
Gorgeous Chicken Pot Pie. Congratulations! YUM!! 😋
I am so proud of you for having a pastry blender to make your crust. I use it when I make my biscuits.
For mixing bowls, I got a set of five stainless steel bowls (going from about 1-2 cups to a huge one that holds over 12 cups of ingredients) at about 20. They are still the best thing I've ever purchased 44 years later. Take from that what you will.
Sounds great! I’ll look for some
I use SS bowls too, love them!
I haven't read the comments yet, but I SOOO hope you saved the renderings from that bird to use later!! Gravy, soup, freeze it etc!!! Yummy!!! 😋🤤❤❤
Great suggestion! It’s called “schmaltz” too. 💙

Haha.
You are lucky to have a Polish wife. They are Great cooks!!

Beautiful pie Mrs H! Looks absolutely delicious! 👍🏾🤤
That looks incredible! Great job! I am so jealous you got to smell it and eat it. You are becoming a world renowned chef.

That looked perfect! Great job!
Chicken Pot Pie is a favorite from my childhood. I have never been successful in replicating my grandmother's version, and asked my mother why. She reminded me that my grandmother used lard for the crust, and that made it flakier. Congratulations on a beautiful pie.
That turned out beautifully! Bravo and good eating!!
WOW that looks soo good!!
What a perfect dish for a rainy day! Always a warm hug, that chicken pot pie.
That looked picture perfect! Well done!!!
Beautiful pie, beautiful family and beautiful video!

That looks great!!!
No waste.
Sour cream is also used to make cheesecake. It provides structure and also add a tart “zing” to your recipe.
Americas test kitchen will never let you down.
