They literally designed the apps and phones to be dopaminergically addictive. That said, you're not wrong, the government has never had a handle on the private sector and isn't going to fix a problem in individual kids. The solution should come from companies being less predatory in their tactics to hijack our dopamine receptors, and parents learning how to teach their kids to self-regulate their technology consumption. Both are an issue. Especially if you think there's a moral implication for happy meals for kids. On a phone, every notification, every like on a post, any funny video, is a dopamine hit and honestly it works way faster and is more immediately harmful to kids than a happy meal in their junk food. Ossoff was trying to get at the valid and scientifically proven argument that I made about dopamine, but his initial question was in fact stupidly worded. Many older adults are just as trusting and gullible as some of the younger generations. Parents really can’t control how their kids react to threats or bullying, unless kids know it’s ok to block anyone they want. Tell them it’s their right!
Social media was built by teenagers, pretty much for teenagers and is still propped up by teenagers. By criminalizing it all you're doing is making kids lie to get on which would put them in more danger by making everyone else assume that they are adults and inviting them to adult activities. If Social media is that scary for you and your kids, have fun trying to monitor our prohibit it.
Social media was built by, for, and is still propped up by teenagers. Parent your children, don't attempt prohibit others. By doing so you're forcing the kids that still get on to lie, others will assume they're adults and unwhittingly invite them to adult events. Intead just limit the content that underage accounts are able to see and interact with. Or force underage acounts to be linked to some parent or gaurdian acount that can monitor and restrict as appropriate.

thank you!!! Probably one of the few people I have seen who has brought this up. Very ironic that people who believe (or pretend to believe) to be conservatives instantly surrender and fold like cheap lawn chairs when it comes to government regulation of social media companies. What happened to "personal responsibility " or "parent rights"? Aren't parents the one who should be first and foremost the ones who should be responsible for what kids do and watch instead of the government? This is a slippery slope I might add, since if you are willing to admit that companies should be responsible for what people do with their products, then is it not logical that gun manufacturers be held responsible as well or am I missing something? If freedom means anything, then leave government out of this!!!
They actually can. This has nothing to do with freedom of speech or expression. Unless we want anarchy, social media will need to be banned completely sooner or later. Also, don’t forget that it’s enemy totalitarian countries that mostly benefit from this situation (Russia, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, etc). They don’t have a problem with social media. It’s the Western world that has allowed this madness. But by creating an entire generation of emotional, our future generations are unprepared to fight simple things like disagreements, finding a job, keeping a personal budget or going through small bouts of depression, let alone economic greed, totalitarian regimes, extremism or climate change.

All companies' obligation is to increase the amount of consumers of their goods or services. It's our job to learn how to only engage in that when needed or wanted and how to not fall prey to the sneaky tactics they use to take advantage of our consumption.
Evidently it wasn't a stupid question because Zuckerberg had all kinds of problems trying to answer it. It's a strategic question that needs to be asked because you need to hear his answer. I would suspect you're not a parent. Because I Don't know a sensible parent who thinks Instagram and tick tock are healthy for children. And if Zuckerberg and the rest of these clowns only interest is making money over the safety of children. They're no better than the cigarette companies 30 years ago with Joe Camel.
All of these guys just want to get what's on their notes out on the record. They don't care how stupid the question is or how stupid the framing is.

What the senator is getting at is that meta’s products should be regulated by the government. So to admit that the country is dangerous as an analogy to meta’s products being dangerous would be unadvisable from Zuck’s defense team’s perspective. That premise would justify government oversight. “Oh the country is dangerous, that is why we regulate it with the police””oh the world is dangerous, that is why we have the largest military ever known to man”

Totally agree and adults themselves are victims as well
No social media until 18

Considering it is more addictive than drugs, there should be awareness training and absolutely it should be age restricted.
Parent's decision, not the government.
As a conservative I don't understand this. Where are the parents 😊

I too am a conservative and have a strong dislike of government interference, but this
social media issue is relatively new, maybe best to permit 'some' government involvement till the dust settles in another decade or so, then maybe there might then be a way to keep minors away from it or at least with limited exposure...
It's incredible isn't it?
thank you!!!

The parents are busy on Instagram
There's a correlation to adults' mental health as well. However, no one can make a person reduce their usage.

Yeah people just need to have personal responsibility. That's kind of the point of the American culture
