I loooooove puppy pose! This is a great backbending pose to open up your shoulders and chest. You'll find it in both hatha and yin based practices. I've heard a lot of students complain about this pose and while it's intense, it should never be painful. It is possible that this pose might not be suitable for your body.
I'll show you how to do this pose, how to make it more or less sensational and some variations you can play with. The yin variation of melting heart will be slightly different than the hatha version of puppy/anahatasana.

Of all the yin poses, this is the most challenging for me. When I started doing yin yoga I had heard that hip opening poses could trigger emotional reactions like anger, sadness, etc, but had never experienced that. However, the first time I tried this pose it elicited very intense anger and frustration. It truly shocked me! I must hold a lot of those emotions in my upper back, who knows? Physically, I feel this in my triceps and shoulders and I feel like my face is smashing into the floor while my arms fight with the mat. So it’s very hard for me to melt and relax. I’ll give this tutorial a try and hopefully get the hang of the pose! I know my body must need it if it’s causing such a strong reaction! Thanks for all you do for us!

Me too! In fact I’m pretty pissed off right now. I’ve been trying this pose and I feel like crying because I can’t hold my body up. I collapsed instantly. No time for a stretch if I can’t even keep my head from falling into the floor 😭 Even with a pillow I don’t know how the heck I’m supposed to make this happen!

First person to ever address wtf to do with your nose, I feel less alone now haha.
I don’t know why but puppy is one pose I dislike so much. Right up there with burpees which I refuse to do. I keep trying but I feel so off balance, strained, like I’m doing it all wrong. I don’t struggle with too many others but this one is a doozy.

This is so helpful! Really like these tutorials. If you could, and want to, I was wondering if you could do one of downward dog? I struggle to make the position correct and have to bend my knees, I was reading your spine and hammies are connected and that's why I can't downward dog as my legs are too tight. Working on my legs but if tutorials are going to be something you may do now and again I'd really appreciate the video! You're amazing, thankyou for introducing me to yoga!

Thanks Kassandra. I've just started exploring this pose and I've never been shown properly how to do it but I have to say, I've done a pretty good job so far! I like it for an alternative to down dog when I'm doing a more low key, relaxing practice because I love the spinal stretch I get in down dog but don't always want to do it as part of my practice. Though I like down dog for a warm up before. Really appreciate how you explained to make it more active or suitable for yin or a restorative practice. Thanks again Kassandra love and light 🧘‍♀️ 💜 🧘‍♀️ 💜

This was PERFECT(!!) because I didn't realize I was "dumping/loading" too much into my lower back - in trying to go for the 'look' of the puppy pose vs where I should be feeling it/melting. Thank you for the suggestions!! OAN: For the Yogi Squat, I thought it was near impossible for me to go down without my heels lifting off the ground - like maybe my femurs are too long to do it, lol. I think I may be improving, but any tips on doing a proper Yogi Squat would be appreciated too! Thanks so much Again!!

I have had a feeling that I was doing puppy pose wrong, and I wanted to get it right because I know I need to stretch my upper body more. Also I didn't realize that puppy pose and melting heart were different and your explanations were so good!

It’s been really useful to focus on just this pose, as I have been able to really look at how you do things. Especially in a pose like puppy this is not normally easy because it entails looking towards the floor. I had literally never realised that I am meant to put my forearms on the floor. As my arms overextend, puppy has always been uncomfortable for me, because it made my arms hurt, so I have only ever done it for short periods. I now have many different options to try, and will be able to participate better. Thank you so much 🙂🙃

The first few times I did Puppy Pose it felt SO great on my upper back and then suddenly I felt like I could never recapture that wonderful stretch. It turns out it was because I was arching my low back in the mistaken effort to "go deeper". I can't wait to practice doing it properly and getting that wonderful stretch again.

Hi Kassandra, thank you so much for this tutorial. I always feel like all my weights end up at my forehead in this pose, and I will try to play with arm distance and breathing for the next practice. I’m also very unsure on “thread the needle” (again, I always felt a a weight rushing forward...) and wild-thing, it would be nice to learn more about them from your tutorials. Also, I am wondering if a full month calendar that focuses on the upper body, arms and necks’ stretch and strength would be a good idea. 🤔🤔🤔 I find it hard to connect with the sensation of these areas. again, thank you very much!!!

I’m *super* flexible and am one of those people who can put their chin/chest on the floor in this pose. My practice in this pose focuses on keeping my elbows from splaying out-so I can feel a stretch in my arms-and keeping my belly engaged so i dont dump into my low back, as you mentioned. It’s taken me a long time to figure that out...in part because I didn’t realize until recently that my flexibility is the exception rather than the norm!

Hey Kassandra! Can you do a tutorial on Pyramid pose please? I always struggle with it, since the back of my legs are quite tense. A lot of the descriptions and explainations I've heard seem to require touching the floor with your fingertips, but I can barely reach even with my front leg slightly bent. It would be great to know what to look out for, what alternatives exist for less flexible people like me and how to improve flexibility in that area. :)

What ever position I try it still hurts my shoulders and I end up having to come out of the pose feeling bummed out. Is there another pose I could do in place of puppy pose?

Thank you so much. I am one of those who doesn't feel anything in this pose so something must be totally wrong.

I keep sliding and falling in this pose! It takes all my strength to hold my body up so I’m confused. Any ideas? (In other words if I try to relax at all my head slams into the floor and my torso falls down). If I sit my hips back it’s fine but I can’t stack my hips over my knees without disaster 😒

So the chest shouldn't touch the mat?

I was thinking about a tutorial for this yesterday while doing one of you classes 😊 my problem is that my hands keeps sliding (or elbows if i do that variation) am i doing it wrong or do i need a new stickier mat? 😅

Could you be leaning too far forward maybe? You could try leaning back slightly or putting a towel under your palms!

I’m puzzled - was expecting a pose demo like with crow pose. Missing 2 minutes?
